Liverpool Closing In On £14k-A-Week Midfielder

Liverpool have "verbally agreed" personal terms with Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram, according to an exciting update from journalist Jacques Talbot.

Which midfielders are Liverpool signing?

The Reds have made it plainly clear that they are aiming to do some significant midfield surgery in the summer window, with constant links to new players emerging. On Thursday, Alexis Mac Allister was confirmed as a Liverpool player, with the Argentine completing a move from Brighton and coming in as a hugely exciting signing.

It would be a massive surprise if the Merseysiders stopped there, however, and Thuram is another player who has been tipped to make the switch to Anfield. The £14,000-a-week star enjoyed an excellent 2022/23 season with Nice, scoring twice and registering four assists in Ligue 1, as well as enjoying an 86.9% pass completion rate.

Paul Joyce has confirmed Liverpool see the 22-year-old as a summer target and a new update further suggests that that is the case.

Is Thuram joining Liverpool?

Taking to Twitter on Thursday evening, Talbot provided an encouraging update on Talbot's situation, saying personal terms have been agreed: "Understand personal terms have been verbally agreed between Liverpool and OGC Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram."

This is great news for Liverpool, if true, with Thuram someone who perfectly fits the profile of what the Reds need in the middle of the park moving forward. Last season, they looked horribly one-paced in midfield, as likes of James Milner, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson looked their age, while Thiago, Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were on the treatment table too often.

In Thuram, however, Liverpool would be bringing in a vibrant presence with an ability to cover ground with ease – he averaged 1.5 tackles per game in the league last term – and he could add so much life in that area of the pitch. The Frenchman has been hailed as a "proactive and tenacious tackler" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, as well as "fast and athletic", and these are the attributes that felt so lacking at Anfield in 2022/23.

If a move for Thuram can be sealed, and one more midfielder also come in alongside him and Mac Allister, Liverpool could be transformed next season, with the rest of their team already looking strong. The middle of the park is such an influential part of the side, as Fabinho, Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum showed at their peak, and this could be the new era there.

Rangers Must Now Cash In On ‘Terrible’ £4m Liability

Glasgow Rangers are reportedly edging closer to selling midfielder Glen Kamara as a new update has emerged regarding his status.

What’s the latest on Glen Kamara’s future at Rangers?

According to the Scottish Mail on Sunday (11 June, pages 100 and 101) the Finnish star is wanted by Ligue 1 side Rennes this summer as Michael Beale looks set to continue his rebuild at Ibrox.

The French side made an offer of £4m which was rejected in 2022, however, it appears as though they are willing to come back in with a similar offer this time around, and it could be a welcome financial boost.

Having cost the Gers a mere £50k when bought from Dundee back in 2019, Beale would make the club a staggering 7,900% profit should he move for £4m and this could help assist in his quest for new signings.

Should Rangers sell Glen Kamara?

The answer to this question two years ago would have been a resounding no, however, his form has dipped drastically over the last 12 months, and he hasn’t quite been the same since Steven Gerrard left in November 2021.

During the title-winning season in 2020/21, Kamara was integral in the heart of the midfield for the Light Blues, averaging 76.3 touches per game while completing a staggering 60.6 passes per game – a pass success rate of 91% – as he controlled matches from the centre of the pitch.

Last season was arguably his least productive at the club, starting just 12 Premiership matches and ranking in a lowly 23rd spot for overall ranking, as per Sofascore, indicating that his influence has severely waned.

His performances in the Champions League group stages were the most disappointing aspect of the season, as Giovanni van Bronckhorst should have been able to rely on a player of his quality to have a positive effect in matches like these. Unfortunately, he averaged a Sofascore rating of just 5.9/10, which across every player that played a single minute in the competition, was the worst overall.

Glen Kamara

The 5 foot 11 liability managed just 15 touches on average per match while winning only 25% of his total duels, and it certainly looks like Beale has no place in his squad for him going forward.

The signing of Nicolas Raskin, plus the fact the Gers are close to agreeing a deal for Los Angeles FC midfielder Jose Cifuentes won't help his cause either.

Rangers Review journalist Joshua Barrie even dubbed him as “terrible” as far back as April 2022, suggesting that the stagnation in his game looked like it was setting in then, and it’s time for him to depart Ibrox this summer, hopefully raising a few million in profit in the process.

Tammy Beaumont anchored England’s run-chase with 78 from 79 balls to secure a 3-0 series lead against Sri Lanka in Colombo, with the fourth and final ODI to come at the same venue on Thursday.Despite losing the toss and being asked to field first, England seized control of the contest from the outset, pinning Sri Lanka down to a run-rate of three an over with a disciplined bowling performance in which their three spinners, Laura Marsh, Alex Hartley and Danielle Hazell, each picked up two wickets apiece.Sri Lanka’s innings never really gathered any momentum. Nipuni Hansika, the opening batsman, top-scored with 29 from 66 balls, but she was the second wicket to fall, bowled by Hazell in the 21st over, and England never relinquished their stranglehold. The hosts were all out for 161 with two balls of their innings left unused, having lost their last eight wickets for 82.In reply, England lost Lauren Winfield and Danni Wyatt in the space of six deliveries to slip to 60 for 2, but a fourth-wicket stand of 67 between Beaumont and Fran Wilson (30) carried the team to the brink of victory. Both players fell in the space of two runs to take the gloss off the win – Wilson was caught behind off Chamari Atapattu before Beaumont became Sugandika Kumari’s only wicket of the innings with six runs still required. But Georgia Elwiss and Amy Jones wrapped up the win with 20.3 overs left unused.

A maiden List A century from Kyle Hope and a strong all-round effort from Rovman Powell studded West Indies A’s 109-run victory over Sri Lanka A in Kurunegela. The win gave the visitors a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.Hope hit four sixes and ten fours in his 110-ball 107, sharing century stands with Chadwick Walton for the first wicket and Assad Fudadin for the second. Walton scored a 57-ball 70 in an opening stand of 111 in 18.1 overs. Fudadin was slower, with a 70-ball 57, but Hope’s acceleration meant the second-wicket partnership put on 109 in 17.1 overs. That partnership ended with the wicket of Hope, but West Indies A still had a strong platform, with 220 for 2 in the 36th over.Powell made full use of that base, hitting six sixes and two fours en route to 52 off 22 balls. West Indies added 113 runs in the last ten overs to set a target of 348.The Sri Lankan openers, Sandun Weerakkody and Danushka Gunathilaka, fell for 0 and 1 respectively to leave the side at 10 for 2. Shehan Jayasuriya, who had led the bowling effort with 4 for 54, did his best to resurrect the batting with a 113-ball 119. He and Charith Asalanka added 88 for the third wicket, before a run-out ended the partnership. Thereafter, a steady stream of wickets deflated Sri Lanka A’s chase with Powell claiming 3 for 43. Sri Lanka A were ultimately bowled out for 238 in 42.1 overs. The final match between the two sides will be held in Colombo on October 30.

Wolves Could Replace Dawson IN £10m Swoop

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been linked to a young defender ahead of the transfer window, as Julen Lopetegui aims to bolster his squad this summer.

The Spaniard has been faced with the additional challenge of making improvements on a budget amidst Wolves’ FFP issues, however, the latest name on the radar at Molineux could be a cost-effective introduction.

What’s the latest on Cesar Montes to Wolves?

As reported by Mexican outlet POSTA, Wolves are interested in Espanyol defender Cesar Montes.

The report claims that following Espanyol’s relegation from La Liga, the centre-back’s future is a ‘mystery’, with a number of clubs interested in his services.

Wolves, as well as Club America and Mallorca are named as those interested in the Mexican who is believed to be valued between €10m and €12m (£10m).

What could Cesar Montes offer Wolves?

Lauded as a “monster” by members of the media, the 26-year-old could prove to be a worthy addition to Lopetegui’s defence this summer.

The Midlands side conceded the seventh-highest number of goals this campaign in the Premier League, conceding an average of 1.53 goals per game in a season that highlighted significant room for improvement.

Wolves added strength to their back line in January, signing Craig Dawson from West Ham United, with the 33-year-old becoming a crucial figure in Lopetegui’s defence by the end of the season.

With 263 Premier League appearances under his belt, the Englishman has been a reliable addition to Molineux, however at 33, the club must look towards a replacement for the future with the former West Brom veteran moving forwards in seasons beyond.

julen-lopetegui-wolves-tottenham-hotspur-live-updates-manager-nuno-espirito-santo-levy

26-year-old Montes could be an encouraging signing for Wolves, and has performed better than the experienced Dawson in certain defensive attributes this term in La Liga.

As per Sofascore, the £11k-per-week gem averages a monstrous 5.0 clearances per game, as well as winning 57% of his total duels, with an average of 4.6 won per game.

In the same areas, the Wolves defender comes up short, with 3.3 duels won per game and a percentage of 54%, and an average of four clearances per game, via Sofascore.

At 6 foot 3, the towering centre-back could add an improved aerial presence at the heart of defence, winning 63% of his aerial duels with an average of 3.4 per game to Dawson’s 1.9.

The assured La Liga maestro failed to record a single error leading to a shot or a goal in 20 appearances, showing his composure in one of the busiest areas on the pitch.

With the added pressure of Max Kilman’s future at Molineux being uncertain amidst interest from Tottenham, Lopetegui should turn his attention to sealing defensive reinforcements, for both the future and the present.

At just £10m, the Midlands club could land themselves an experienced centre-back without facing negative financial repercussions.

Leeds Must Reignite Interest In 6 ft 1 Free Agent

Leeds United are in a major period of transition with a drop back into the Championship and a change in hands of ownership confirmed over the last few weeks.

The Whites are still on the hunt for the next manager to lead the squad at Elland Road after parting company with Sam Allardyce following Premier League relegation last month, but have managed to appoint an interim football advisor in former Newcastle consultant Nick Hammond.

Whilst there are many major loose ends to tie up before Leeds can start planning for their next chapter, it will be essential for the club's hierarchy to start thinking about the recruitment and squad personnel who will remain to compete for an instant bounce back to the Premier League next season.

Indeed, it has been reported that the appointment of a manager will be finalised next week and the club will surely be keen to allow the new boss to come in and make his own assessments before making solid moves in the summer transfer window, but there are certainly players worth taking a look at as soon as possible.

One player who was linked with a move to West Yorkshire back in January is Axel Tuanzebe, with the young talent offered to the club for a six-month loan spell before he went to Stoke City instead.

Now the Manchester United academy graduate has been released by the Red Devils and it could be the perfect opportunity for Leeds to snap up a free agent with huge potential.

Who would Tuanzebe replace in the Leeds team?

It is looking increasingly likely that Robin Koch will depart this summer as the pair are attracting a lot of interest, meaning there is a huge opportunity to snap up the services of a right-sided centre-back this summer.

Koch – who has been branded "not good enough" by pundit Gabby Agbonlahor – has somewhat surprisingly been linked to a number of Premier League sides including Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Newcastle United this week.

As a result, the release of Tuanzebe could not have come at a better time for Leeds and if they can move fast, there is no reason why the defender couldn't bolster the centre-back options at Elland Road next season, especially considering he is available for free.

axel-tuanzebe-premier-league-leeds-transfers

The 6 foot 1 titan – hailed "unbelievable" by David de Gea – has struggled with injuries which have plagued his ability to find some consistency in his football, but has shown glimpses of his talents and strengths.

Tuanzebe's best period in his career so far came at Aston Villa where he helped the side earn promotion to the Premier League through the second-tier play-offs.

Over 25 Championship appearances, the 25-year-old tallied up an 85% pass completion rate and successfully completed 79% of his dribbles, as well as averaging 59.6 touches, 1.2 tackles, four clearances and 5.6 duels won per game, demonstrating that he can be a huge presence when playing consistently and has sound experience of playing in the second tier, which could be a huge asset to Leeds next season.

With that being said, although it may be risky to put trust in Tuanzebe to be available over the entire campaign, he could still be valuable to Leeds in their pursuit for promotion and would be a good piece of business for the club as a free agent.

Heat choke Strikers in slog overs to defend 206

Brendon McCullum’s leadership, coupled with accurate bowling in the slog overs helped Brisbane Heat choked the Adelaide Strikers to defended 206

Daniel Brettig21-Dec-2016

Marshalled expertly by Brendon McCullum, Brisbane Heat held their nerve to storm Adelaide Oval and deny the Strikers in a high-scoring Big Bash League shootout in front of a hefty pre-Christmas crowd.McCullum and Jimmy Peirson set the Heat on the road to a tally of more than 200 on a pristine batting surface, before the visitors persevered through a blistering opening stand by Ben Dunk and Jake Weatherald to constrict the Strikers middle order and walk off the victors.Slam DunkThe Heat showcased a useful recruit of their own when the former Striker Alex Ross tailed off the Heat’s innings with a series of telling blows, but it was Dunk’s pyrotechnics at the start of the Strikers innings that stuck in the memory. Though he was dropped twice, Dunk also produced a series of exceptionally clean blows, the best of which was an inside out cover-driven six off Samuel Badree that comfortably cleared a teal wall of fielders on the off side.Dunk was able to pull along the promising left-hander Weatherald in his slipstream, and the pair now look likely to be one of the more dangerous opening combinations in the tournament. Dunk’s own hitting was to be placed in perspective by the struggles of the batsmen that followed him, quickly turning a gettable equation into a favourable one for the Heat.Second spellBadree is of course one of the world’s leading T20 exponents, and he did not let 15 runs from his first seven balls fluster him. Only two more singles could be taken from the remainder of that second over, and when returning in the 10th over, Weatherald and Dunk still flying, Badree was able to tie up the younger batsman with a trio of dot balls that were the first sign of any momentum being lost.Recalled to the attack to twirl the ball down at the new batsman Travis Head after Weatherald was finally dismissed, Badree produced the rarest of T20 gems – a maiden. In his recent ODI appearances for Australia, Head was a batsman of almost perpetual motion, but he was unable either to muscle or finesse Badree. The Strikers’ required run-rate leapt up by more than a run in the space of that over, and from there McCullum was able to use his other bowlers to keep that rate climbing.Another area in which Badree’s influence could be seen was in how the other legspinner Mitchell Swepson responded to his own difficult start. At a time when the Strikers needed boundaries, he conceded only four singles and a two, while also dismissing Head with a hard-spun delivery that the batsman could only top edge to, you guessed it, Badree running around from short third man.Six and not outThe Adelaide Oval’s crowds have been the most consistently bounteous of the BBL since the ground was redeveloped, and those on the short square boundaries have gotten quite used to trying to catch the many sixes hit in their direction. The first six of the night, a typically rasping cut over point by McCullum, was expertly caught by one man in the members, who promptly threw it back up in celebration.Later, Jake Weatherald hammered a pull shot to straight midwicket where another catch was neatly held. But the most notable effort was the most nonchalant of takes behind square leg by a security guard posted on the fence. Joe Burns’ hook shot arrowed towards him, and he held it without even getting up from his seat. Three sixes caught from among a crowd of 38,011 was an impressive effort. The McCullum effectBrisbane’s signing of McCullum as far back as BBL01 had to be done with one eye on the time they would be able to utilise him full-time, and his international retirement last season means he will now be available for the entirety of this competition. Not only did the Heat benefit from his lead-off hitting before the Adelaide sun went down, but his composure and confidence in the field radiated in a way that helped the Heat’s players keep their heads while the Strikers gave up a handsome position in the chase.
