Trent Boult has conceded that sitting out some matches in the ODI series against South Africa could have kept him fit for all the Tests, but admitted it would be difficult to pick and choose which matches to play in tightly contested series.Boult was forced to sit out the second Test in Wellington with a groin injury which prevented him from bowling on the fourth afternoon of the Dunedin Test. It came on the back of a hefty workload in the opening match of the series – 47.4 overs – where he was one of two frontline quicks alongside Neil Wagner as New Zealand played two spinners.”It’s a tough one. No-one wants to be rested or put aside or put on ice at any stage,” Boult said while on a guest commentary stint on during the first day’s play between South Africa and New Zealand at the Basin Reserve. “Ideally I want to play every game in every format but realistically it’s not going to happen. All those one-day games in the South Africa series were big games but if I missed a couple of those, I might be out there today,”He is hopeful of being fully fit for Hamilton, the last Test of New Zealand’s summer. “It’s a big one for us. I am doing everything right to make sure I can be out there and doing my thing.”Ironically, doing everything he can actually means doing as little as possible because rest between games is what Boult has identified as the crucial factor in maintaining bowling fitness. “It’s about managing loads where you can at training. If you’re playing majority of the games, you can easily take off on the training loads and save yourself for the match.”His bowling partner Tim Southee said similar when asked about workload management. Speaking the day before the second Test, Southee explained that during a match, it’s difficult to limit the number of overs any bowler delivers, but they can be monitored between fixtures.”In the Test match you want to be bowling as much as you can. If you are not bowling, you are not taking wickets and all of the bowlers, during a Test match, it’s quite difficult to get the ball out of their hands. That’s a good trait to have,” Southee said. “I don’t think you can go into a test match worrying about workloads. That’s something that can be monitored between Test matches.”Southee had the opportunity to put his feet up last week, when he was left out of the first Test to accommodate for the two specialist spinners. It meant Boult had to send down some lengthy spells which was “quite tough” and it was unusual without his sparring partner. “Generally Tim is always out there with me. To have him fully fit and miss out on selection was a shame,” he said.But he had no complaints about his new-ball partner on that occasion, Neil Wagner, who has become a mainstay in the New Zealand attack. “All the effort that he puts in – he literally keeps coming. To have someone like that in your side is immensely important,” Boult said.While Wagner will enjoy some time off after the current Test series, Boult and Southee will both play at the IPL. From there, they head straight to the Champions Trophy where Boult, who is ranked No.4 on the ODI rankings, will want to make an impact. “I gained a lot of confidence in ODIs under Brendon [McCullum’s] captaincy. Everyone knows how well the side did over those weeks at the World Cup. He taught me back myself to pitch the ball up against quality batsmen and to get them out.”

Marcelo Bielsa got the best out of several players during his successful spell at Leeds United, where he became somewhat of a hero in Yorkshire after securing the club's promotion back into the Premier League. But it's Kalvin Phillips who really stood out at times under the Argentine.

The midfielder impressed so much, in fact, he earned a move to Manchester City, with Leeds receiving a reported £45m fee last summer.

The England international hasn't quite replicated his Leeds form at The Etihad, however, struggling for game-time and form throughout his debut season under Pep Guardiola. Of course, injuries didn't help as he missed 16 games with a shoulder injury at the start of the campaign. From there, it was always going to be difficult to break into the City side.

Despite his struggles, though, Phillips came away from his first season in Manchester with a treble after City won the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup.

Amid his difficulties, Phillips turned to the man who have him such a high platform to succeed in the first place, as Bielsa showed his class once more.

Speaking to BBC 5 Live, Phillips said: "Marcelo Bielsa is a very special person to me. He’s a great manager and he’s a manager who found the best in me as a football player, with where he wanted me to play and how he wanted me to play. I’ll always be grateful for that.

"I actually spoke to him. I came on against Leicester, and I didn’t do too well, and I was feeling a little bit down."

The midfielder went on to say: "He was just asking me how I was, and how I was feeling and what I was thinking, and we had a really good conversation, so the relationship is obviously still there with Bielsa."

In that game – a 3-1 victory – Phillips failed to impress as he "got in a tangle with Ederson" for the only Leicester goal.

With a boost from his former manager, however, perhaps next season will be the one in which the midfielder makes his mark.

What is the market value of Kalvin Phillips?

Since Manchester City paid that reported £45m for him last summer, Phillips' market value has gone down significantly, which is perhaps an indication as to how disappointingly things have gone for the midfielder.

As per Transfermarkt, the former Leeds man is currently worth €32m (£27.29m), meaning that if City did want to get rid of Phillips, they'd potentially be making a loss of almost £20m.

Currently, 27, Phillips should be playing at the peak of his powers. Instead, though, he is resigned to sitting on the bench under Guardiola at City. Alarm bells may have been ringing earlier this summer, too, when the Premier League champions were reportedly making a move for the now Arsenal-bound Declan Rice.

Rice plays in Phillips' position, who already finds himself behind Rodri in the pecking order, so a move for Rice could have been pretty disastrous for his ambitions at the club.

As of right now, however, last summer's signing looks set to get another crack at impressing Guardiola in the coming campaign. And with so many trophies coming his way last term, Phillips may just settle for a place on the bench in exchange for a number of medals.

Only time will tell, but, either way, Bielsa has his back.

David Richardson, the ICC chief executive, has indicated that the governing body has come around to the idea of cricket becoming an Olympic sport, and that it is close to making a decision on whether to apply to the IOC for involvement in the 2024 Games.The question of cricket’s inclusion at the Olympics has long been fraught with difficulties but, speaking at the SportPro conference in London, Richardson reportedly gave his backing to the move, which would likely take the form of a T20 tournament featuring six to eight teams.”We need to make a decision by July this year so we can make an application in time for September, when, as I understand it, the IOC will consider new sports for 2024,” he said. “I think the majority of the members – and certainly myself – think the time is right and we’ve come to the conclusion that the overall benefit to the game in terms of globalising and growing it, outweigh any negatives, so I’m hoping.”The host city for the 2024 Olympics has yet to be determined, with only Los Angeles and Paris left in the running (Rome, which has withdrawn from the bidding process, had previously given its backing to cricket being played). Cricket has only featured at one previous Olympics, the 1900 Paris Games.”T20 is the ideal format and we’d say even better than rugby sevens as it’s actually one of the mainstream formats of cricket,” Richardson said. “Neither LA or Paris would be a disaster for us, in fact both would be opportunistic, especially the US option.”The BCCI has been seen as the major obstacle within the ICC. The ECB was previously opposed to the idea, fearing it would clash with the English season, but the new chairman, Colin Graves, signalled a change in stance after taking office in 2015. Making cricket part of the Olympic programme has been seen as a way to gain access to increased funding and help spread the game globally, with the MCC a consistently strong advocate.Richardson said the IOC had decreed the best players must be involved if cricket is to win inclusion – “They’ve told us we mustn’t send beach cricket or six-a-side teams, it must be a format played at international level and it must be our top players” – and mooted the possibility of regional qualifying tournaments to decide which countries get to take part at the Olympics. He also suggested that England would be able to compete as Great Britain and potentially select Scottish or Irish players.”From an ICC perspective, the fixture calendar is the most challenging part of it,” he said. “In the northern hemisphere, the Olympics are held in the English summer, so that’s a problem for them if they’ve got an Ashes series on. So there will be issues and England in the past have said ‘are we sure we want to go down this route?'”

The summer transfer window officially opened for business last month and it has been a busy few weeks for Celtic for several reasons.

How good is Donny van de Beek?

The 26-year-old ace has only started 11 Premier League matches over the last three seasons for United and Everton combined, so it is difficult to judge him on his time in England so far.

However, his impressive form with Ajax, prior to his move to Old Trafford, suggests that the potential is there for him to be Rodgers' next version of Youri Tielemans.

The Northern Irish tactician played Tielemans in 184 competitive games over five seasons with him at Leicester, in which time the now-Aston Villa gem contributed with 53 direct goal involvements – one every 3.47 matches on average.

The Belgium international proved himself to be an excellent number eight who can make an impact at the top end of the pitch as a scorer and as a creator, with 28 goals alongside 25 assists.

Van De Beek, who ex-Scotland full-back Alan Hutton claimed would be an "outstanding" signing for Celtic, showcased similar qualities during his time at Ajax.

The £120k-per-week dynamo racked up 41 goals and 34 assists in 175 competitive outings for the Dutch giants, which included eight goals and five assists in 23 Eredivisie matches during the 2019/20 campaign. This means that the talented technician was directly involved in a goal every 2.33 clashes on average.

He averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.11 or higher in each of his last three league seasons with Ajax – a score that would place him within Celtic's top ten performers last term – whilst Tielemans achieved a rating of 7.00 or higher in each of his five years with Leicester.

These statistics suggest that the potential is there for Van De Beek to be an excellent option for Rodgers in midfield as an attacking threat, in the same way that the Belgian maestro was for him at the King Power Stadium for a number of years, if he can recapture his Eredivisie form.

Therefore, Celtic could secure a superb signing for their squad ahead of next season if they are able to strike a deal with Manchester United to sign the Dutchman on loan before the deadline.

Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane is uninterested in joining Ligue 1 giants Paris-Saint Germain this summer, as per "sources close" to the player.

Will Harry Kane leave Tottenham?

The 29-year-old is embroiled in another summer transfer saga, coming two years after his failed move to treble-winners Man City in 2021.

Kane apparently had a gentleman's agreement to leave the club that year, and despite £100 million bids coming from City, a transfer never materialised.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy was in a very strong position to refuse the advances of major clubs back then, but fast-forward to this window, and everything's changed.

Kane has entered the final year of his contract at Tottenham, and with just 12 months remaining on his stay as things stand, Levy may have to contemplate selling or risk losing him for nothing next year.

Ange Postecoglou has admitted to the media that he isn't exactly thrilled with the uncertainty surrounding Kane's future as both Bayern Munich and PSG linger in the background.

“Fair to say I am not relaxed about it," said the Spurs manager on Kane.

“It’s not something you go: ‘Ah, well, you know if it does or doesn’t happen!’ I mean it’s a very important part of this football club, not just the team, but the football club.

“So, you’ve got to deal with it, and I think, for everyone concerned, we don’t want to be doing it for too long. I don’t think that is good for anyone."

Dropping an update on Kane's future through social media, reliable journalist Ben Jacobs of CBS Sports has shared what "sources close" to the striker have told him concerning PSG.

The French champions are believed to hold an interest in England's international star, but they may be denied, as Kane apparently has no interest in joining them.

"PSG do like Kane and he has been discussed," wrote Jacobs on Twitter.

"But sources close to Kane downplay his interest in joining. Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Levy do have an excellent relationship, though."

Meanwhile, Jacobs also claims Bayern are set for a third bid to sign Kane this summer. Indeed, it is believed they will mount a total bid of around £86 million soon.

"Bayern will make a third bid for Harry Kane," Jacobs wrote again.

"Total package expected to be close to €100m. Bayern have not to date been given a price by Daniel Levy, who is still hoping Kane signs a new deal with Spurs."

How good is Harry Kane?

Scoring 30 league goals in 38 starts last season, Kane showcased yet again what a truly world class player he is.

The former Leyton Orient loanee broke both Jimmy Greaves' all-time goalscoring record for Tottenham and Wayne Rooney's all-time haul for England this year.

Ex-Tottenham boss Antonio Conte praised the attacker for being "world class", when commenting on his quality performances last campaign.

"We are talking about a world class striker,” he said.

“He deserves the best because he's a great worker, hard worker… this is not normal because usually the players that have talent many times don't like to work hard because they have talent.

“In my career I didn't have great talent [so] for this reason I worked hard. What I liked about him from the first time was his ability. He was a big example for his team-mates."
