The South Africa fast bowler feels the league’s cancellation this year could hurt the hopes and finances of the country’s up and coming players

South Africa’s younger players will suffer the most from the postponement of the T20 Global League, according to pace spearhead Dale Steyn. The league was due to be played from November 3 until December 16 but has been put off for a year as CSA struggles to deal with the costs and logistics of a tournament of this nature.Though no replacement fixtures have been announced, the domestic franchise T20 competition is expected to played in that period. There is some talk of increasing of payments for that event, but it will not nearly be as monied as the T20 Global League.”I feel for the younger guys, the guys who were set to earn some cash and were maybe looking at buying a flat or a car. The excitement gets to you, especially when you’re young and all of a sudden you get the opportunity to earn US$100,000,” Steyn said at a sponsor event on Thursday. “Could you imagine being 21 and someone offers you 100,000 dollars and then three weeks later says, ‘oh you are not getting it anymore’. It kind of ruins your plans and hopes.”Recent ODI and Tests debutants Dane Paterson and Aiden Markram, Andile Phehlukwayo, Lungi Ngidi and Heinrich Klaasen all became overnight Rand millionaires after the draft but will not see that money just yet, if at all. It’s not simply a case of rolling the contracts over for next year because things change in cricket, neither is there any certainty the tournament will actually take place given that its organisation is now under investigation. The South African Cricketers’ Association is in the process of negotiating with CSA but, according to CEO Tony Irish, is doing so while being “mindful of the situation CSA is in”. CSA has already lost millions of Rands in stadium upgrades, marketing and a lavish launch for the T20 Global League and though player payments must be made, it is unclear if that will happen in full. All that means the young players who were expecting big pays may not see them. For Steyn, it’s not just the financial implications of this tournament being postponed that matter but also the intangibles. An event like T20 Global League would have also provided young players with exposure that could have resulted in them getting deals in other T20 leagues, where South Africa’s most established players already have contracts. “For the older players, it does not matter so much, they are set. You look at AB [de Villiers], anybody in the world would take AB, any team. He doesn’t have to prove himself but maybe a Dane Paterson, who is just making his way and was set to earn some money… This would have been a nice platform for him and other guys. It’s unfortunate but it’s the way it is.”
Glasgow Rangers head coach Michael Beale recently hinted that the club could go back into the market to add another forward to the squad before the end of the summer transfer window.
Who have Rangers signed this summer?
The Gers have already brought nine new faces to Ibrox to bolster the manager's options across the park and have added three players to his attacking arsenal.
Cyriel Dessers, Sam Lammers, and Danilo have arrived to provide a goal threat at the top end of the pitch, whilst Abdallah Sima, Kieran Dowell, Jose Cifuentes, Dujon Sterling, Leon Balogun, and Jack Butland have also come through the door.

However, the Light Blues boss has suggested that he is still short of a replacement for Ryan Kent, who left on a free transfer to join Fenerbahce this summer, and that something may or may not happen in that department before next month's deadline.
Who could replace Ryan Kent at Ibrox?
Beale could finally replace the one-time Liverpool prospect by completing a swoop to sign Jack Clarke from Sunderland, who has been linked with a move to Ibrox in recent months.
The 5 foot 11 sensation, who was once lauded as "effortless" by former Premier League forward Noel Whelan, enjoyed a phenomenal campaign with the Black Cats last term and could be a fantastic addition for the Gers if they are able to secure his signature.
He is a right-footed left winger, like Kent, who has proven himself to be capable of producing goals and assists at an impressive rate, at least within the second tier of English football.
During the 2022/23 season, Clarke racked up nine goals and 11 assists for Sunderland as the exciting speedster showcased his attacking quality on a regular basis from the flank.
Meanwhile, no Rangers played produced more than nine assists in the Scottish Premiership last term and no forward managed more than eight.
Former Rangers forward Ryan Kent.
This means that the ex-Tottenham Hotspur gem could be an outstanding creator for the Light Blues with his ability to unlock opposition defences if he can translate his form over to football in Scotland.
Kent only found the back of the net three times in 29 league outings and that came after he scored two in 26 matches throughout the 2021/22 campaign. This shows that the 26-year-old wizard rarely provided a significant goal threat for Rangers on the wing.
Whereas, Clarke's nine-goal haul for Sunderland indicates that the talented Englishman has the potential to be a reliable scoring option for Beale, particularly when you consider that no current Gers winger scored more than six league goals last season.
The 22-year-old phenom also has the ability to drive his team up the pitch in the same way that Kent did for Rangers. He completed two dribbles per match for the Black Cats last term, whilst the now-Fenerbahce star managed 1.9 per game for Rangers – the joint-most within the squad.
These statistics suggest that Clarke has the potential to come in as a dream replacement for Kent and a possible upgrade on the former Liverpool man due to his knack for scoring goals as well as creating them.
Aston Villa could delve back into the transfer market this summer, as Unai Emery weighs up his options before the closing of the window next week.
The Villans have recruited well already in the build up to the 2023/24 campaign, with the captures of Youri Tielemans, Nicolo Zaniolo, Pau Torres and record-breaking Moussa Diaby, who has proven to be a strong acquisition with the £51.9m man scoring on his Premier League debut.
With only two league games played, there’s a long way to go for Villa, sparking rumours that the club could be eyeing further reinforcements to bolster the squad in preparation for what’s to come.
Who could Aston Villa sign this summer?
The position currently taking the headlines for Villa is at left-back, where speculation has surfaced regarding two figures that could be of interest to Emery and Monchi.

As reported by journalist Rudy Galetti, Villa’s hopes to capture Marcos Acuna from Sevilla have taken a turn, with talks said to have “stalled” as the Spanish club weigh up whether to allow the 31-year-old to depart.
An alternative has arisen for Villa to target, with Fabrizio Romano stating that the Midlands side are “exploring conditions” for Arsenal full-back Nuno Tavares, in the hope of signing the 23-year-old dynamo, who is likely to leave north London this summer.
CIES Football Observatory currently value him at €30m (£26m).
How good is Nuno Tavares?
Despite not making an impact at the Emirates since his arrival in 2021, the Portuguese gem shone away from the capital, where he found sanctuary at Marseille during a season-long loan last campaign.
The left-back became an integral part of the squad in France, registering 31 appearances in Ligue 1 where he showcased his ability in the final third by scoring six goals, via Transfermarkt.
Now, it looks certain that his future will be away from north London, which could be promising news for Villa who could sign a sure upgrade in the position by acquiring the former Benfica sensation.
Marseille's former loan defender Nuno Tavares.
Having been lauded as “outstanding” as well as possessing “fantastic physical capabilities” by former Marseille manager Igor Tudor, Emery could integrate the Gunners’ talents into his squad perfectly – and it could be bad news for Alex Moreno.
The Spaniard arrived at Villa Park in January from Real Betis, however, has missed the opening fixtures of the season as he nurses an injury.
The 30-year-old is an accomplished full-back but should Tavares make his way to Villa Park, the former LaLiga ace could have his position compromised by the Portuguese based on his playing style alone.
In signing the Arsenal outsider, Emery could equip his side with a wizard of progressive full-backs, with him excelling the Villa man in areas fundamental to those in the position in the Premier League.
As per FBref, Moreno averaged 2.51 progressive passes and 1.56 successful take-ons per 90 during his debut Premier League campaign, numbers that were comfortably succeeded by Tavares in Ligue 1 who averaged 4.41 progressive passes and 2.07 successful take-ons per 90 to assert his attacking prowess.
While being an attacking support system is not theoretically the most important duty of a left-back, the 23-year-old bettered the Spaniard defensively also, communicated by his average of 2.15 tackles per 90 to Moreno’s 1.56 for Villa.
Should Emery make a swoop for the £29k-per-week Arsenal man, the Villans’ winter arrival could already find himself being sidelined, with Tavares asserting himself as one of the liveliest wing-backs in Europe last term.
While Gujarat finished at the top of the Group B table with a ten-wicket win over Jharkhand, Kerala thumped Haryana by an innings and eight runs
ESPNcricinfo staff28-Nov-2017Kerala picked up an innings-and-eight-run win against Haryana to join defending champions Gujarat as the two quarterfinalists from Group B. Kerala needed five wickets on the fourth day, having reduced to Haryana to 83 for 5 by the third evening. Haryana’s tail did not crumble, as Amit Mishra and Poonish Mehta resisted with knocks of 40 and 32 not out respectively, but seamer MD Nidheesh nipped out three wickets to earn Kerala a bonus-point win. Kerala finished second on the Group B table, while Haryana’s season ended with their fourth loss in six matches. This was the first time Kerala entered the quarter-finals since the introduction of the tier system in the Ranji Trophy format.Gujarat needed only ten balls to wipe out a fourth-innings target of 15, after Jharkhand imploded on the fourth morning in Ranchi. The ten-wicket bouns-point win ensured a top-of-the-table finish for Gujarat. Having been asked to follow-on on the third day, Jharkhand were always facing an uphill battle. They did not begin the fourth morning too well, losing two wickets in the first three overs. Virat Singh and Ishan Kishan resisted with a 48-run partnership for the fifth wicket, but Jharkhand crumbled once Virat was dismissed for 52, losing six wickets for 26 runs to be bowled out for 183. Left-arm spinner Hardik Patel had remarkable returns of 4 for 9 in six overs, all four of his wickets coming in Jharkhand’s collapse at the end. Gujarat’s openers collected all their runs in fours to breeze to the target.Saurashtra eventually finished a close third in the group, after they drew out their final game against Rajasthan in Jaipur. Three Rajasthan batsmen struck centuries after being asked to follow on, eventually overhauling the 259-run first innings deficit, before finishing the day on 394 for 7. Amitkumar Gautam (100), Chetan Bist (109) and Rajesh Bishnoi (103*) hit hundreds on the final day. Dhamrendrasinh Jadeja of Saurashtra finished with figures of 5 for 167.Even a win wouldn’t have taken Saurashtra through, since both Kerala and Gujarat won their games, but they were going after the bonus-point win when they asked Rajasthan to bat again yesterday. But the two Rajasthan openers Gautam and Bist put on a 205-run opening stand after which Bishnoi’s unbeaten 103 meant the game was destined for a draw. Saurashtra collected first-innings lead points, but eventually finished five points adrift of second place.

The recently-concluded summer transfer window has been one of much change for Liverpool, but the performances at the maiden stage of the Premier League campaign are also tantalising a season of greater success for Jurgen Klopp's side.
Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch have all been signed to bolster the midfield following the culmination of James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's contracts in June.
The Saudi Arabian raid on European football found Liverpool and resulted in the sales of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, and while some might have been concerned by such drastic upheaval, the Reds have started the term with confidence.
Seven points have been secured from the opening three Premier League matches, with a draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge preceding victories over Bournemouth and Newcastle United.
Aston Villa now make the trip to Anfield on Sunday afternoon, and Liverpool will hope to continue the early-season purple patch and maintain their position at the upper end of the table.
Who will play against Aston Villa?
Liverpool will be hoping to make it three successive league victories with triumph over Unai Emery's Villans, but will have to do so without £34m deadline day signing Gravenberch, who has not been registered in time for the contest.
Ibrahima Konate and Thiago Alcantara will also miss the match through injury, while captain Virgil van Dijk is suspended after his red card at St. James' Park last weekend; the absence of Liverpool's starring defensive axis means under-fire duo Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are the probable partnership.
Curtis Jones could also feature after returning to full training this week, having missed the past two matches with an injury.
Klopp has so far named £85m club-record signing Darwin Nunez as a substitute across the opening games of the term, but after the Uruguayan's resounding brace to sink the Magpies last time out, could find an opportunity from the opening whistle.
Will Darwin Nunez start against Aston Villa?
Arriving from Benfica for a lucrative fee in June 2022, Nunez understandably carried a weight of expectation after bagging 34 goals from 41 outings for the Portuguese giants in the 2021/22 season, including goals against Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Liverpool in the Champions League.
The £140k-per-week talisman managed to score 15 goals and supply four assists from 42 matches in his maiden year in England, starting only 26 times, and while he was heralded as a "racehorse" by his manager, missed 20 big chances in the top-flight, behind only Marcus Rashford and Erling Haaland, who broke the Premier League record for goals scored in a season.
While the present term is still in its embryonic stage, Nunez has netted twice and is yet to miss a big chance, and if he is to feature from the get-go against Villa, he could continue his recent feats.
Klopp will be hesitant to bench Diogo Jota or Cody Gakpo, who are impressive forwards with their link-up play and workrate, but with Luis Diaz scoring twice from three games this season too, it is unlikely that the Colombian will lose his starting spot.
Mohamed Salah is simply untouchable in his right forward position, and while Klopp will be pleased with his side's start, Nunez was the "game-changer" against Newcastle, as was said by content creator HLTCO, and must now be provided a starting berth.
Would Darwin Nunez score vs Aston Villa?
Certain segments of the Liverpool support might consider Nunez to be a weapon best utilised in the second half, brought on to wreak havoc and impose on the weary legs in the latter phase of the match – an "agent of chaos" to tip the odds in the Reds' favour, as has been said by the Liverpool Echo's Theo Squires.
But he definitely possesses qualities to break the Aston Villa resolve, and will have seen his confidence receive a much-needed boost after so instrumentally affecting the Newcastle game, with Klopp's side looking destined for defeat until his introduction.
As per FBref, the 24-year-old ranks among the top 10% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 1% for total shots taken, the top 3% for touches in the attacking box and the top 4% for progressive carries per 90.
What this highlights is a natural striking instinct and a progressive presence to drive the ball into promising offensive openings, something that could be utilised to exploit an Aston Villa team that's weaknesses on the counter were brutally exposed against Newcastle in the season's curtain-raising matchweek.
Liverpool's Darwin Nunez
Indeed, the Toon dismantled Villa in ruthless fashion to start their campaign with aplomb, winning 5-1 on home ground in an incisive, counter-attacking clinic, with Eddie Howe remarking that his team could have scored more on the day.
Nunez's electric pace and clinical ability could be crucial to writing a similar narrative on Sunday, especially with the likes of Mac Allister and Szoboszlai orchestrating breaks from deep.
Mac Allister ranks among the top 13% of midfielders for shot-creating actions and the top 16% for progressive carries per 90, while his Hungarian teammate ranks among the top 11% of attacking midfielders and wingers for shot-creating actions, the top 17% for assists and the top 16% for progressive passes per 90.
Such skills appear tailor-made for a forward of the 6 foot 2 Nunez's ilk, who might now unleash the full scale of his skill set on English football with regularity after an inconsistent first year.
Liverpool's static, ineffective midfield last year must receive its portion of the blame, failing to supplement the attack with reliable creative support, and now Nunez looks to have all the tools to craft an auspicious campaign for himself.
Villa, who have recovered well from the ignominious seasonal opening in England's North East, winning convincingly against Everton and Burnley, will now hope to hinder Liverpool's resurgence with a resilient, tenacious display on Merseyside.
But with the Anfield side clicking into gear, their efforts might be futile, especially if Nunez – who has been dubbed "razor-sharp" by Sky Sports commentator Peter Drury – is deployed from the start, growing into his skin and starting to show signs of the striker that Klopp and co paid such a large fee for.
It was not quicker, bouncier or scarier than Newlands but the uncharacteristic SuperSport Park pitch has not drawn any criticism from the men who have to play on it. At least, not yet.
Firdose Moonda in Centurion13-Jan-2018It was not quicker, bouncier or scarier than Newlands but the uncharacteristic SuperSport Park pitch has not drawn any criticism from the men who have to play on it. At least, not yet. With turn from day one, this usually spin-free surface has done the one thing captain Faf du Plessis did not want and has already brought India’s spinner R Ashwin into the game. Ashwin’s three wickets have already had some impact but exactly how much of a say both he and Keshav Maharaj will have on this game may ultimately affect the assessment of groundsman Bryan Bloy’s maiden Test strip.”I feel the wicket did spin a bit but it was not outrageous. It was very slow and there was bounce, sometimes people watching the game mistake bounce for big spin,” Ashwin said. The bounce will be particularly important to the hosts, who see that as being key in allowing them to exploit home advantage. “In terms of bowling, we have got taller bowlers who are used to the conditions and it would be interesting to see how the Indians bat and make an assessment,” Aiden Markram, who top-scored with 94 said. “We’ve got taller bowlers than what the Indians have. That is the only difference I see.”Markram plays his domestic cricket for Titans and knows the Centurion pitch well. He admitted this strip was slower than usual. “It was a little bit different. Generally, there is good pace and bounce. It is still there but it lacked the extra pace that the usual wicket at Supersport is like,” Markram said. “But there is just about enough in it for both batsmen and bowlers. It is a wicket where the contest is always happening. Ideally, we would have liked to have it quicker but I don’t think it’s something bad.”Markram admitted South Africa “didn’t expect there would be so much assistance for him (Ashwin)”, which made him a tricky prospect first up. “He was difficult to face but he is difficult to face on a flat wicket as well. It will be interesting to see if the pitch does get harder or if it will continue to spin or if it spun like that because of grass covering,” Markram said.Pre-match, both teams considered playing all-pace attacks with Ashwin expecting to be benched until the eve of the match. “Two days from the game, it looked like we are going to play an all-seam attack. And then when we walked into the ground yesterday, it was white in colour, the grass was coming off. All of a sudden I really had to pull myself back and think I am in the game now,” Ashwin said. “Today morning when we came to the ground, it looked like a wicket that was really flat and had to have a spinner in the game. Personally, from my side of it, I was very happy that the grass was taken off, if not I think it would have been all-seam attack.”South Africa were also seriously considering leaving Maharaj out and going all guns blazing with a five-pronged pack. In hindsight, that would have been a grave error, even though Bloy told ESPNcricinfo that he expects the pitch to quicken up on the second and third days, something Ashwin agreed with. “I found it to be a bit damp and it was very slow. The new ball isn’t doing a lot actually and the pitch is actually flattening out and spin is going out of the surface a lot more. I think days two and three will be a very good batting day,” Ashwin said.Because this surface has elements of the unknown, it’s difficult to tell what a good first-innings total will be but Markam would like to see South Africa get at least 70 more runs before bowling at SuperSport Park. “Anything above 350 would be good but we would like to push to 400,” he said.
