Chelsea: Hargreaves Tips Blues To Spend Big On Premier League Wonderkid

Chelsea have been tipped to win the race for one of the top-flight's most exciting talents by Owen Hargreaves.

The former England midfielder has praised Brighton and Hove Albion gem Evan Ferguson after a scintillating performance against Newcastle United on Saturday, in which he scored his first senior hat-trick in a 3-1 win over their league rivals.

Ferguson has understandably made headlines after his most recent performance, with fans and pundits around the country in awe at his maturity at such a young age and has now been backed to seal a switch to Stamford Bridge in the future.

What did Hargreaves say about Ferguson?

Hargreaves appeared on 'The Kelly & Wrighty Show' alongside Arsenal legend Ian Wright to discuss the game, where they had plenty of praise for the Irishman.

On the striker's performance, he said:

“That was against the best defence in the Premier League last season. Dan Burn looked very worried about Ferguson.”

His admirations continued, saying:

“I like the fact that all three goals were different. The first one was an easy one, he was in the right spot. The second was a great goal.

“He’s a bit of an old school centre-forward, he’s got that physical profile.”

The one-time Manchester United midfielder then suggested Chelsea as a likely destination for the emerging sensation – “Probably Chelsea," he said when asked about the Irishman's future, adding: "because they buy all of Brighton’s players”.

Who is Evan Ferguson?

The 18-year-old joined the Seagulls academy in January 2021 from Irish side Bohemians, despite interest from Liverpool.

Since making his first-team debut for Brighton in August 2021, aged just 16, he has played 33 times in all competitions scoring 14 goals, 4 of which have come in the opening four games of the 2023/24 Premier League season.

After an FA Cup quarter-final brace in March, the clinical striker earned the plaudits of BBC's Danny Murphy who labelled Ferguson a “superstar”, while Gary Lineker took to Twitter to write: “I see a real centre forward before my eyes.”

evan-ferguson-1

Ferguson is the latest of Brighton’s incredible talents that we have seen burst onto the scene in the Premier League in recent years, joining names such as Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister.

As with the previous players, the Irishman hasn’t been spared from links to some of the biggest clubs in the league, with Sky Sports reporting (via GOAL) in August that he was Tottenham’s ‘dream’ replacement for Harry Kane.

Arsenal are also thought to be plotting a £100m move for the Seagulls star next summer, per FootballTransfers.

Meanwhile, it was no secret that Chelsea were trying to bring in another frontman before the transfer window slammed shut last weekend.

With Nicolas Jackson yet to hit the ground running – having scored just once in four starts – and Christopher Nkunku's injury troubles, Chelsea could continue their search for a centre-forward next summer and with Ferguson’s strong progress so far, it would be unsurprising to see Chelsea go after the Brighton man.

The two sides have done business on numerous occasions in recent years, with owner Todd Boehly spending big on the likes of Caicedo and Marc Cucurella to name a few, while Tariq Lamptey and Billy Gilmour have gone in the other direction.

Hargreaves was merely speculating on where Ferguson may end up in the future but given the evidence above, he could well be the latest figure to swap the south coast for west London in the near future.

Seth Rance helps put out fire in Wairarapa pub

The New Zealand fast bowler is also a station officer with the Greytown Fire Brigade

When we speak of cricketers putting out fires, it’s usually in the context of a batsman playing a rearguard innings. Not so in the case of the New Zealand fast bowler Seth Rance, who is a literal firefighter. On Monday, Rance, who is a station officer with the Greytown Fire Brigade, helped extinguish a blaze that threatened to engulf the White Swan Hotel, a pub in the rural town of Greytown in the Wairarapa region of New Zealand. Crews from across Wairarapa, with Rance among them, arrived on the scene after the pub’s roof caught fire.”The origin of the fire was in the southern end of the building,” Rance told reporters. “There’s a little bit of structural and water damage but it appears to have been caught in time. It’s fortunate we got the call nice and early.”Rance, who has played two ODIs and four T20Is since his international debut last year, isn’t the first New Zealand quick with a day job in the uniformed services – Shane Bond also had a parallel career as a policeman.

Ryder Cup 2023: Which football teams do famous golfers support?

The 2023 edition of golf’s Ryder Cup is just around the corner, and as the USA and Europe prepare to once again battle for the most illustrious trophy in the sport, we here at Football FanCast are wondering which players support which clubs.

With that in mind, here is the list the football fans at this year’s event and which teams they support.

Rory McIlroy – Manchester United

Kicking things off is probably the most recognisable Golfer of all, in the UK at least, Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman is a massive Manchester United fan and has never hidden his love for the Red Devils. In 2014, the two-time PGA Championship winner was invited to parade his Claret Jug around Old Trafford during half-time of the game against Swansea City.

The 34-year-old has also often recounted the time that Roy Keane denied him an autograph as a child; we reckon Kean might be less likely to turn him down now, though.

Shane Lowry – Manchester United

Ireland’s Shane Lowry is next, and just like his teammate north of the border, the Irishman is an avid supporter of Manchester United. The 36-year-old hasn’t been shy about his support for the Red Devils over the years, telling National Club Golfer that the team he dislikes most is Manchester City and mocking fellow golfer Billy Horschel after United beat his side, West Ham United.

Lowry’s greatest moment came in 2019 when he won the Open Championship.

Brooks Koepka – Manchester United

Okay, this is the last Manchester United fan on the list, we promise.

Like his Ryder Cup opponents McIlroy and Lowry, Brooks Koepka is a huge United fan. The American revealed that his love of the team stems from when he borrowed McIlroy’s ticket and attended a few games, instantly falling for the team. He was asked whether he was considering a bid to buy the club following his move to LIV Golf, to which he joked: “I could use a little more money, yeah. But I think that’s out of my price range.”

The 33-year-old became world number one in 2018 and remained so for 47 weeks – he’s now number 14.

Tommy Fleetwood – Everton

Tommy Fleetwood is another of the country’s most well-known golf stars, especially in Liverpool and among Evertonians.

Fleetwood has always been open about his love for Everton and has been welcomed to the club as a guest multiple times in the past, and he even made a visit to the building site of the new stadium earlier this year.

For the 2021 edition of the Masters, the Southport native had someone engrave the club’s name on his wedge.

Justin Rose – Chelsea

The first fan of a southern club on the list, and it’s Englishman Justin Rose, who is a very vocal Chelsea fan.

Given his very open support of the team, he was invited to the training ground in 2020 to take part in a putting challenge with former captain and club legend John Terry; unsurprisingly, the former England international didn’t emerge victorious from that encounter.

His greatest moment in the sport came in 2013 when he won the U.S. Open.

Jon Rahm – Athletic Bilbao

Jon Rahm is the first Spaniard to make the list, and, unsurprisingly, he supports a team from his home country, Athletic Bilbao.

Rahm was born in the Basque Country, and given the intense loyalty those from the region often show to their home, it probably shouldn’t be surprising to read that he’s a massive fan of Bilbao. He was honoured by the club earlier this year when he was named as the first of 12 ambassadors for the club as a part of its 125th anniversary celebrations.

On the course, the 28-year-old has won two Major Championships, the Masters in 2023 and the U.S. Open in 2021.

José María Olazábal – Real Sociedad

The second Spaniard on the list and the second to be born in the Basque Country.

While Bilbao might be the more recognisable club to those outside of Spain, Real Sociedad is another massive club from the area and just so happens to be the side supported by golf great Jose Maria Olazabal.

In 2012, the 57-year-old was invited by the club to take the kick-off in their La Liga game against Sevilla. Before kick-off, he was also presented with the club’s gold and diamonds insignia for his “exemplary sporting trajectory as well as his condition as a lifelong fan of La Real.”

On the course, he has won two Major Championships, the Masters in 1994 and again in 1999. He also led Team Europe to a remarkable win in the 2012 edition of the Ryder Cup.

Tyrrell Hatton – Liverpool

Back to the Premier League now, Tyrrell Hatton is our first Liverpool fan on the list.

Just like the Everton-loving Fleetwood, Hatton hired someone to engrave one of his wedges for the Masters this year with several Liverpool references, including YNWA, the six Champions League winning years and Allez Allez Allez. We think it might be fair to class the 31-year-old as a bit of a superfan.

Hatton was a member of the last Ryder Cup winning side for Europe in 2018.

Ludvig Aberg – Liverpool

Ludvig Aberg will get his first taste of Ryder Cup action this year, but his attention might be elsewhere as his beloved Liverpool look to be mounting something of a title bid again in the Premier League.

The 23-year-old has made no secret of his love for the Reds, explaining in an interview earlier this year that the last thing to make him cry was the club’s remarkable comeback against Barcelona in 2019.

All eyes will be on the youngster to see how he fares in one of Golf’s most illustrious tournaments.

Thomas Bjørn – Liverpool

The final Liverpool fan at the Ryder Cup this year is golfing great Thomas Bjorn. The Dane is a massive fan of the six-time European Champions and has been a guest at Anfield on multiple occasions.

In 2018, he said he’d use Liverpool and Steven Gerrard as inspiration as he captained the European team in that year’s Ryder Cup. It clearly worked as Europe claimed the title that year under his leadership.

Interestingly, his inclusion in the 1997 Ryder Cup squad made him the first Dane to ever play for Europe in the competition.

CSA apologises to Australia for mask slip-up

Cricket South Africa has issued an apology to Cricket Australia after two CSA officials were photographed posing with fans, who were wearing Sonny Bill Williams masks at St George’s Park

Start of Warner-de Kock clash revealed

Cricket South Africa has issued an apology to Cricket Australia after two CSA officials were photographed posing with fans, who were wearing Sonny Bill Williams masks at St George’s Park.Clive Eksteen, a former left-arm spinner and CSA’s head of commercial, and Altaaf Kazi, CSA’s head of media and communication, posed for a picture with three fans wearing masks on the first day of the Test. The photo was shared on social media and then picked up by the , who wrote that the Australian team were “outraged.” CSA said it would follow its “normal internal processes,” with regards to Eksteen and Kazi, which will likely begin with an internal investigation. They have been asked to return to Johannesburg, where CSA’s head office is located.”On behalf of CSA I extend my sincere apologies to the Board of Cricket Australia, its officials, team management, players and their families,” CSA president, Chris Nenzani said.”Cricket Australia spoke to Cricket South Africa officials yesterday to express disappointment with this matter and events that unfolded off-field Friday at St George’s Park,” a CA spokesman said. “CA appreciates the swift response, including the sincere apology from CSA, and the seriousness with which the matter is being treated.”The Williams’ masks were brought into the ground as an attempt to ridicule David Warner, who was involved in a stairwell spat with Quinton de Kock during the first Test in Durban. Warner was fined 75% of his match fee and earned three demerit points for the incident, later claiming de Kock had made a “vile and disgusting comment,” about his wife Candice. De Kock admitted to saying something in a hearing that took place on Wednesday and was fined 25% of his match fee with one demerit point added to his record.Candice had an encounter with Williams 11 years ago, before she had met Warner and South African fans hoped to use that to antagonise the opening batsman. The day before the Port Elizabeth Test, social media posts, including one by a reporter (who is not working on this game) with the host broadcaster shared photographs of fans making Williams’ masks and of a songbook with lyrics containing vulgar and derogatory language. While the songs were not heard at St George’s Park, the masks were seen but only after CSA officials had to intervene to allow mask-wearing fans into the stadium.Initially, stadium security had refused to allow them in because of what Kazi called a “misunderstanding,” though it is not clear on whose instructions the security were initially acting. Kazi and Eksteen were then contacted by the fans and met them at the gates, where it was decided that they would be allowed in. According to Kazi, the group of fans then asked for a photo with him and Eksteen and the pair obliged.”We found out because (the spectators) contacted us and we then went to security and got them in. They said ‘let’s take a photo with you guys,” Kazi told .Speaking to ESPNcricinfo shortly after the story broke last night, Kazi admitted it was “one of the worst judgment calls I have made,” and expressed regret over his actions.Meanwhile, CSA had reiterated that freedom of expression will be respected, within the limits of their own guidelines for spectator behaviour, which does not tolerate any racism, sexism or derogatory comments. A statement read: “While CSA respects the rights of its fans to represent their own points of view, CSA does not associate itself with these actions and urges all Protea supporters from refraining from being involved in distasteful or unwelcome actions that may impact the image of the sport and its supporters.”

Northern Powerhouse finally stirs into life

It has taken five attempts over two series but the North finally beat the South in the pre-season challenge match in Barbados

Dan Norcross22-Mar-2018

The North finally tasted victory against the South at the fifth attempt, winning another hugely entertaining contest by 46 runs, tying the three match series at one apiece, bagged a cheque for £10000 and in so doing achieved something that has been beyond successive UK governments for the better part of 40 years in redistributing money from South to North. On a blustery day at the Kensington Oval, the North set up what would have been the highest run chase at this venue and in posting 335, ensured that the top two list A totals achieved here have been set by the two different halves of England (and Wales of course, though Glamorgan have no players in the South squad) following the South’s record breaking 347 on Sunday.Runs have come aplenty for both sides in both games in the opening power plays, and despite two tight maidens from Sam Curran, Joe Clarke and Alex Davies plundered a spectacular 92 from the first ten overs. It took Clarke 15 balls to get off the mark but he more than made up for it with 71 from his next 44.Nonetheless, assistant coach of the South side Andy Flower, guesting on BBC’s commentary, was hugely frustrated when he slapped a Dominic Bess long-hop into the gleeful hands of Curran, diving smartly to his right at midwicket. Clarke is a man the England management are monitoring closely. He is very near the front of the cab rank, and Flower’s reaction told you how much they want him to succeed. There was a big hundred there for the taking and after doing pretty much everything right it was an infuriating way to go. She’s a cruel mistress is cricket. As Peter Cook’s Alan Latchley so sagely said (though about football), “she can bring tears to your eyes and blood to your shoulders”.Clarke’s wicket left the North perilously perched on 132 for 4 in the 20th over and in danger of squandering their splendid start, but a mature partnership of 108 between the skipper Steven Mullaney and Brett D’Oliveira, who top scored with 79, got the innings back on track and provided the perfect platform for a hell-raising 64 from Derbyshire’s Matt Critchley. Many of us have been under the misguided impression that Critchley was a leg-spinner who could bat. Well, it turns out he’s a batsman who can bowl leg-spin. It may be a bit early to file him under “the next Steve Smith”, apart from anything else Smith has rarely struck four fours and four sixes in 37 balls, but he demonstrated again the value to the selectors of this fixture as a means of identifying the next generation of one-day talent. And the value of bringing a massive box of replacement balls as the roof of the Greenidge and Haynes stand came in for a regular buffeting. It took a startling catch in the deep by Delray Rawlins to dismiss him. Amidst the carnage, the South’s two left-arm seam bowlers, Paul Walter (a man who can’t help but evoke memories of Alan Mullaly, albeit that he’s around four inches taller) and Sam Curran shared five wickets between them but it was Dom Bess who again proved the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 47 from his ten overs. What the visiting Joel Garner made of another slow, tacky pitch is anyone’s guess (he didn’t hang around long), but it is the way of things in Barbados these days. The South’s reply was barely any less frenetic with Nick Gubbins picking up where he left off on Sunday. He stroked his second hundred of the series off a mere 85 balls. Opening partner to Alastair Cook since Andrew Strauss retired has been a role more cursed than 16th Century Pope, first century AD Roman Emperor or Defence Against The Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts. Mark Stoneman is the man currently in possession of the poisoned chalice, but it’s Nick Gubbins who is peering over his shoulder. He found fine support in a century partnership from Laurie Evans who channelled his inner Jason Roy in an increasingly fluent innings of 64, but the reintroduction of Richard Gleeson turned the match. First a fabulous, perfectly pitched yorker that the by now departed “Big Bird” would have appreciated castled Gubbins for 109, and a repeat dose two balls later did for Rawlins.Evans and Curran threw away their wickets trying to get after Matthew Parkinson who finished with 3 for 47 from 9 overs, the former smashing a short ball out to deep cover, the latter charging past a deliciously dipping leg break. Davies completed the stumping with Curran roughly three quarters of the way through an inelegant pirouette with his head pointing skywards. Surrey’s Ollie Pope tried to shepherd the rapidly vanishing tail but eventually was last out for a busy 42 from 35 balls, Saqib Mahmood hitting the stumps for the sixth time in two matches.A pop concert is scheduled for the weekend at the Kensington Oval so the third and final match will be played at the Three W’s Stadium down the road with £30000 going to the winners.
