'We keep making the same mistakes' – Bayliss hoping for World Cup wake-up after 'embarrassing' loss

Jofra Archer set to win a chance in England’s next ODI engagements as coach admits some are playing for their places in the World Cup squad

You might think, after four years as England coach, that Trevor Bayliss might be inured to England’s occasional – and, perhaps, not so occasional – propensity for a batting collapse. But, seeing him at the team hotel on the morning after the night – okay, the early afternoon – before is to see a man clearly struggling to come to terms with events. He uses words such as “embarrassed” and admits he “can’t get my head around” the disparity in quality between England’s performances. For them to suffer the largest defeat, in terms of how long it took West Indies to knock off the target, in their ODI history on Bayliss’ watch clearly hurts. It wasn’t just the extent of the defeat, though. It was the fact that it came in the final ODI before England were obliged to select their World Cup squad. Despite all the tours and training and faith in the players, it seems the England team retain a propensity, when confronted by conditions outside their comfort zone, to collapse in spectacular fashion. A difficulty in adapting to conditions is clearly a recurring problem. And while Bayliss admitted the performance – perhaps it would be more accurate to call it the lack of performance? – could be the “wake-up call” his side required, he also said that some of the current players have had every opportunity to nail down their places and failed to do so. As a consequence, Jofra Archer be given an opportunity to show what he can do during the ODIs against Ireland and Pakistan despite having just 14 List A appearances to his name. He would appear to have every chance of winning a World Cup spot.ALSO READ: ‘It’s been an honour to wear the crest’ – Gayle bows out”Was it the worst yet?” Bayliss said of defeat in St Lucia. “I think it was. To lose in such a fashion… I think they [the players] were embarrassed.”We talk all the time about playing smart cricket but, quite simply, we didn’t play smart cricket. We kept making the same mistakes.”Whether it’s a bit of overconfidence – have we gone into the match with, not a blasé attitude, but an overconfident attitude where they go out and play their natural games and think it’ll just happen? Batting can’t be easy and free flowing all the time. And it’s happened a few times.”Bayliss hopes the game will prove to be something of a watershed moment. Straight afterwards, the team held a long meeting in the dressing room where they reflected on their failings and, he believes, understood where they went wrong.”I didn’t have to say very much,” he said. “Eoin Morgan started the conversation and three or four of the most experienced players in the team led it. They were on the money.”They were talking about getting to 220-230 on that pitch. That conversation was going on out in the middle and in the dressing room. But we didn’t put it into play.”You’re not going to score 400 on a wicket like that but you make high 200s, 300, 350 and it’s enough to win games on those wickets. Yesterday we just didn’t. Two hundred and we would have been right in the game.”If it doesn’t sink in after this one – so close to the World Cup – then there’s something wrong. I’d like to think that, after their chat yesterday in the changing room, it will sink in.”While the batting was the focus of most reports, Bayliss was also underwhelmed by some aspects of the bowling during the series. There had, for example, been talk ahead of games about bowling yorkers at Chris Gayle. But very few were delivered and Gayle was able to hit 39 sixes in four innings; one every 8.10 balls.”We just bowled a lot of balls in his strike zone,” Bayliss said. “We just didn’t get the ball in the right area enough. Yorkers were spoken about a lot. Sometimes the bowlers go out to try and do it and just can’t.”Partly as a result, Bayliss confirmed that Archer – who is now just a few days from qualifying as eligible for England – is almost certain to made his debut in the ODIs to be played in May ahead of the World Cup. While England are obliged to name their 15-man World Cup squad by April 23 (they are expected to name it a week or so early), they can make as many changes as they like until May 22. After that date, they need ICC approval for any change and they will only be allowed in the event of injury or exceptional circumstances.”Jofra Archer’s name keeps cropping up and I think, at some stage, we will give him an opportunity,” Bayliss said. “Those matches against Pakistan and Ireland, I think he will get an opportunity to show us what he can do. He’s said publicly that he’s keen.”He’s a bowler you don’t get many of: someone who is able to bowl in all three phases of the game. He can take the new ball, he can bowl through the middle and he can bowl at the end which is a good skillset to have.”There was a little bit of contact made during the Australian summer and there was talk a month or two ago about when the date was that he qualified. At the time, it was around 31 days that he needed to be back in the UK.”Are the players he’s competing with aware of the situation? I don’t know, you’d have to ask them. There is plenty of speculation all the time in the papers and I’m sure they read that.Ben Stokes was dismissed by Carlos Brathwaite•AFP

“The guys in the team, they’ve got hold of those positions and in a way it’s theirs to lose. If they keep performing and doing well it’s difficult to bring people in.”The implication? That they been performing. Several fringe members of the squad now face an anxious wait.England resume training on Monday ahead of the first of three T20Is against West Indies in St Lucia on Tuesday. They will be without Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali, who have all been given time off before they depart for the IPL, while Jason Roy will shortly go home to be present at the birth of his first child. Mark Wood is also likely to be rested for one or two of the T20 games. The likes of Sam Billings, Dawid Malan, Chris Jordan and Sam Curran – who have all been brought in for the T20I series – are likely to win opportunities in the coming days, as is Joe Denly who has been a non-playing member of the ODI squad.

Celtic targeting "unbelievable talent" to bolster midfield this month

Speaking in a press conference earlier this week, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers revealed that the club came close to signing Declan Rice during his first stint in charge, only for injury issues to scupper the prospective move.

"I remember when I was here the first time, we spent about three months looking for Declan Rice to come in," he said. "Declan was all set to come in and then all of a sudden they had an injury, he stayed and got in the team and the rest is history. That’s not the club’s fault – it’s just the way it goes."

It's tempting to wonder what might have happened if Celtic had been able to pull that deal off. Rice, of course, became the most expensive British player in Premier League history when he made a £105m switch from West Ham to Arsenal last summer, and perhaps if he'd shown similar potential at Celtic, there could have been a big payday for the Hoops.

Now, though, Celtic are going after another young defensive midfielder who's generating plenty of hype in scouting circles.

Celtic monitor Zambrano

According to HITC, Celtic and fierce Scottish Premiership rivals Rangers "are both watching" Oscar Zambrano of Ecuadorian club LDU Quito. His performances in South America have caught the eye of the Old Firm duo, but Premier League sides in England have been alerted too.

His name has cropped up in recruitment discussions at Wolves and Brighton, while Luton Town have held talks. However, Bournemouth's interest has apparently progressed the furthest. Indeed, the report states that the Cherries are in "pole position" to make the signing, having entered "advanced" negotiations over the 17-year-old. Celtic, will therefore have to act quickly if they're to pull off a deal.

Zambrano offers exciting No 6 package

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.

2023 was something of a breakout year for Zambrano, who played every minute for Ecuador at the Under-20 World Cup as they reached the last 16 before earning a senior debut for his country in November.

At club level, meanwhile, he's earned 26 league appearances despite his relative lack of experience and has also featured in seven games as his side marched to victory in the Copa Sudamericana, South America's equivalent of the Europa League.

Online talent spotters have expressed huge excitement over Zambrano, indicating that he could be a real coup for Celtic or whichever club ultimately sign him. Scouted Football, for instance, has gone as far as calling him "one of the best line-splitting passers" they've ever watched, noting that he marries this incisive play with a "tenacious off-ball presence".

Similarly, scout Jacek Kulig lists a combination of on and off-ball strengths – "pace, passing, technique, tackling, positioning, determination, work rate" – and draws a parallel with compatriot and positional peer Moises Caicedo, the most expensive acquisition by a Premier League club. Under-23 scout Antonio Mango echoes that assessment, describing Zambrano as a Caicedo "regen" and an "unbelievable talent". Now is the time to pounce and develop this wonderkid before selling him on for a huge profit if he continues to improve.

Jack Brooks turns the tide before Lewis Gregory seals another Taunton thriller

The Somerset tail added vital runs and Lewis Gregory then picked up 5 for 18 as Kent’s challenge finally faltered

This story shall the good man tell his son. At least, he will in Chewton Mendip and Glastonbury; in Sevenoaks or Margate he may not be so keen. For after a couple of days in which they had toyed outrageously with their supporters’ deep and fragile love, Somerset’s cricketers rewarded the wyverns who had kept the faith with a 74-run victory, a margin which is absurdly deceptive and does not for a second reflect the part Kent played in a fine contest. The final act of the engrossing drama began at 12.07pm with the visitors needing 206, one fewer than they had scored in their first innings, to mark their return to Division One with a well-earned triumph. Those who anticipated an even battle probably overlooked the impact of a 62-run last-wicket partnership between George Bartlett and Jack Brooks which had frustrated Kent’s bowlers and made their top-order wait to begin their work. They also underestimated the difficulty which almost all the batsmen in this match had encountered on a juicy pitch which had spent days under cover and therefore required a tighter technique than most of them displayed. As early as 12.08pm Kent’s problems were clear. Sean Dickson played a shade too far from his body at Lewis Gregory’s first ball of the innings and gave a catch to Craig Overton at third slip. Immediately the balance of the game shifted; Gregory’s ecstasy proclaimed as much and by the end of the match he had added four more wickets, two of them taken in three balls before lunch, by which time Kent’s innings was neck-deep in ordure at 43 for 5.Gregory first nipped one back off the seam to have Daniel Bell-Drummond leg before and with the first ball of his next over found a tight enough line and enough bounce to take the edge of Zak Crawley’s bat. In between those successes Heino Kuhn had been leg before wicket to Craig Overton for nought, though there was evidence to suggest the ball hit him outside the line. Such things ensure it will not be your day.But if Gregory’s five wickets in this innings guaranteed he took the honours from these last sessions, the day will also be memorable for the effusions of a 34-year-old Somerset debutant whose extrovert nature was twice shown to good effect in the morning session.Brooks signed for Somerset late last season and he therefore enjoyed a full pre-season programme with his new colleagues. But he did not at the County Ground until just after midday on this fourth day when he bowled a full-length delivery, just outside off stump, to Matt Renshaw. Fatally tempted, the batsman poked at the delivery and edged a catch to third slip where Gregory pouched the catch. And at once Brooks was off. He sprinted towards the Marcus Trescothick Stand and was followed a la Hamelin by the rest of the Somerset team in their celebration of the prize wicket.Brooks had already had a fine day. His unbeaten 35 had helped Bartlett extend Somerset’s overall advantage from 143, which Kent would have fancied getting, to a total which proved too stiff for them. Kuhn’s bowlers gave Brooks room to swing his arms at the ball and he accepted their invitation with considerable pleasure. The ball flew through the covers, beyond the slips third man and, on one occasion off Harry Podmore, over midwicket for six. At the other end Bartlett, who would not have been playing in this match had Jack Leach been needed, batted within himself and passed fifty for the second time in his first-team career. His partnerships with Overton and Brooks were the largest of the match, so it was only fitting they went a long way towards deciding the outcome. Bartlett already has a Championship century at Old Trafford to his name but his 63 against Kent will count for more in his development. The afternoon’s cricket was less dramatic. Somerset’s bowlers were made to work for their win, mostly by the patience of Darren Stevens, who finished the match unbeaten on 43. But at no time did it seem likely Kent’s lower-order batsmen could change the direction of the game. Gregory picked up two more wickets and Overton his second. Brooks had Harry Podmore lbw, a wicket he celebrated with a major fist pump and skipper Tom Abell marked by yelling triumphantly in his bowler’s earhole. Josh Davey ended matters when he had Mitch Claydon taken at slip and Somerset’s players celebrated a victory which until mid-morning was always in doubt. Brooks, of course, will probably have had to learn “Blackbird”, his new team’s famous song. What’s the betting that, within a month, he will be leading his colleagues in a gurt big rendition?

Arsenal eyeing £100m Onana alternative who does "everything Rice can do"

Arsenal's main necessity this winter is to bring a swanky new striker to the club as the Gunners aim to topple Manchester City in their pursuit of Premier League glory.

Their forward line has been firing blanks of late with just one goal scored in their last three matches from a combined tally of 61 shots. Yeah, it's grim reading, isn't it?

That said, it feels like a forward player could well be out of reach with a £100m asking price slapped on Ivan Toney and Victor Osimhen boasting a jaw-dropping £120m release clause.

dominic-solanke-ivan-toney-tottenham-opinion

If they want to improve other areas of the pitch then it could also take a mouthwatering sum of money. As such, it wouldn't be a great surprise if Edu Gaspar and Co didn't bring any new faces into the building this month.

Arsenal's transfer plans

Beyond a striker, it's reported that Arsenal want to bring in a midfielder. Everton's Belgian star Amadou Onana has allegedly been the subject of discussions behind the scenes.

The 22-year-old has notably been a "monster" since arriving at Goodison Park – as per analyst Raj Chohan – but with FFP troubles plaguing the Merseyside club, they could be forced to sell with a £60m fee potentially in the pipeline.

Aston Villa are a club experiencing no such lows and thus, prising anyone away from the Midlands will be very challenging. Champions League football could be on the horizon for Unai Emery's side with almost all of their star players being targeted by the elite.

Douglas Luiz is one such name with Arsenal long-standing admirers. They have failed with bids for the Brazilian in years gone by but the interest still very much remains, according to recent reports from Football Insider.

joao-palhinha-douglas-luiz-liverpool-opinion

However, with a £100m asking price and interest from elsewhere, notably Liverpool, this won't be straightforward to seal whether it be in January or the summer.

How Douglas Luiz compares to Declan Rice

When Arsenal beat Manchester City to the signing of England international Declan Rice for a fee of £105m last summer, it shocked the Premier League.

The Gunners' previous record buy before that had been Nicolas Pepe for £72m. Therefore, this was a colossal raising of the stakes from the north Londoners.

Yet, somehow Rice has managed to make his valuation look like a bargain. He has scored late winners against Manchester United and Luton, while, quite simply, dominating midfield battles up and down the country.

He ranks within the top 2% of midfielders in the top flight for progressive passes and the top 3% for passes into the final third. This is an elite midfielder at the peak of his powers but what if the aforementioned Luiz could offer more than Rice?

We'll take this with a pinch of salt but that was the view of former Arsenal man Jermaine Pennant who speaking to talkSPORT, once said: "I think he [Douglas Luiz] can do everything that Rice can do and better. I think he assists more, he chips in with goals more than Rice. Creativity wise he's better, flair is better, he can put in a tackle just like Rice, break up play just like Rice."

Bold words indeed, so let's see how they stack up in a number of metrics throughout the 2023/24 campaign.

Well, as we can see, the midfield duo are alike in a whole variety of ways but the only area Rice really trumps Luiz in is progressive passes. We know the former West Ham man is among the best in the division in that regard but it's clear to see based on the numbers just how impressive the Brazilian maestro is.

Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz

He's winning a fraction more tackles per 90 minutes than Rice, making the same number of progressive carries from deep and providing more in the final third. Considering he plays slightly more advanced than Arsenal's summer signing that is hardly a surprise, but his ability in forward phases does make him an appealing signing.

So far this term, Villa's number 6 has found the net on seven occasions while supplying six assists. Paying £100m would be extortionate but he is a phenomenally complete midfield player and would make a fine partner for Rice.

Jonathan Trott takes on short-term coaching role at Kent

Former England batsman to fill in for injured Allan Donald and could be considered as batting coach

There will be a familiar face in an unfamiliar role at Edgbaston on Sunday. Jonathan Trott, who retired as a player last September after a decade-and-a-half at Warwickshire, will be back at the ground starting a new position as a coach. But he will not be in Warwickshire’s training gear. Instead he has agreed a 40-day role with Kent – Warwickshire’s opponents in the current round of Championship games – so will find himself, for the first time, in Edgbaston’s away dressing room.ALSO READ: ‘Know when to leave’ – Trott on long-format battingThe role came about, in part, as Allan Donald, the Kent assistant coach, is currently suffering from a shoulder injury that prohibits him from throwing the ball. But the club do not have a full-time batting coach on their staff – head coach Matt Walker fulfils the role when other duties allow – and admit they could be looking to fill the role on a permanent basis at the end of the year.Trott spent part of the winter working with the England Lions side and is understood to be highly thought of by some in the England camp.

Spurs enjoying busy January transfer window

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou will be enjoying the club's no-nonsense approach to this January window, especially after the Australian publicly urged chairman Daniel Levy to make quick-fire moves.

Sky Sports lift lid on Tottenham approach to sign "excellent" World Cup ace

Postecoglou has liked him for a long time.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 18, 2024

Postecoglou expressed his desire for the Lilywhites to get signings in early, suggesting it will give both Spurs and the new arrivals a better chance at success in the short-term.

"The January window, like for every club, is an important one," said Postecoglou on Tottenham's transfer plans last month.

"My view on the January one is that if you can get your business done early in the window it certainly is more helpful because you leave it until the end of January and sometimes what you train to gain you've missed that opportunity by waiting a whole month."

Spurs sealed deals for both midfielder Timo Werner and defender Radu Dragusin during the first half of January, which is out of character for the club in comparison to previous years.

Postecoglou's influence appears to be growing behind-the-scenes, and especially after Tottenham's wonderful start to the 2023/2024 season.

The former Celtic boss has endeared himself to the Spurs faithful with his brand of intense, high-pressing football – and it appears Levy is ready to back his head coach.

Tottenham may not be done after the signings of Werner and Dragusin, either, as reports suggest Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher is a player of real interest to Postecoglou.

Elsewhere, it has been reported that Spurs have opened talks over a buy-to-loan-back deal for Club Brugge winger Antonio Nusa.

Their London rivals could've got him for around £420,000, so it's safe to say Millwall will be regretting their decision as Nusa impresses for Brugge and Norway.
