Eoin Morgan hopes World Cup epic leaves legacy for English cricket

The grandstand finish, with England winning in last-gasp drama, was beamed into millions of home at primetime

Andrew Miller at Lord's15-Jul-2019Cricket’s grandest of occasions received a grandstand finale, and one that was potentially watched by a whole new audience in the UK, after the decision to show the match on in a one-off capacity, the first men’s international to be screened on terrestrial TV since the 2005 Ashes. And England’s captain Eoin Morgan, whose team has been acutely aware of the need for English cricket to boost its participation levels, said that he hoped that the final of the match would have attracted a fair few new converts to the sport, even on a day when cricket was competing both with a gripping men’s tennis final between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer at Wimbledon, and Lewis Hamilton’s victory in the Silverstone Grand Prix.It potentially helped ‘s viewing figures that the Super Over came only minutes after the completion of Djokovic’s victory.”I hope so,” Morgan said. “Particularly given the time it finished. Obviously today is a big day of sport with Wimbledon and Silverstone GP going on, but with Sunday evening, people normally settle in for a bit of David Attenborough or some random film that’s on, so I hope they were tuned into the cricket.ALSO READ: ‘He’s almost superhuman’ – Morgan lauds extraordinary Stokes”I certainly hope participation levels go up or continue to rise,” he added. “I think the nature in which the game was played today was absolutely outstanding. I commend the Black Caps and Kane [Williamson], they have been incredible, a hugely admirable team, spirit, the way they play, the fight they show and the fact they have done it for an extremely long time.”We’re only newcomers to this and we want to be as consistent as them come the next World Cup, with aspirations like that. But to get over the line reaffirms everything that we have done over the last four years and justifies it as well.”As to Morgan himself, he will be 37 come the 2023 World Cup in India, and though he said that he would take time to enjoy the feeling of being a World Cup winner, he was coy about his own future as England captain.”We will let the dust settle,” he said. “We’ll celebrate as hard as we can. I think it’s deserved. And then we will look at things. Four years is a long time away. I think the big question I will have to answer is will I be in the team in four years, will I be good enough? These guys are improving very quickly. Will I be able to keep up with them?”For now, though, Morgan has etched himself a place in English sporting history, emulating Bobby Moore in 1966 and Martin Johnson in 2003 as the three England captains to have won the World Cup in one of the country’s major sports.Asked if he was aware of how this achievement might change his life, Morgan said: “I’m not sure it has. I hope it hasn’t changed that much. I enjoy my life. I lead quite a quiet one, so I hope it hasn’t changed too much. I would love it to change for everybody else who wants it to change, but I enjoy my life.”

Fabrizio Romano: Liverpool reach verbal agreement over deal for Anfield gem

With many aspects of their future looking uncertain, Liverpool look set to nail down the future of a young talent who could go on and become one of the club's brightest stars.

Liverpool's Premier League form

After a loss at the hands of Arsenal slightly curtailed Liverpool's title charge, Saturday's 3-1 victory at home to Burnley has put the Reds back at the summit of the Premier League. Goals from Diogo Jota, Luis Díaz and Darwin Núñez saw Liverpool overcome the struggling Clarets and reaffirm their position as the team to beat.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.

Two points ahead of Manchester City, Jürgen Klopp's side will be desperate to stop their rivals from lifting a fourth consecutive league title and close out the German's nine-year reign on Merseyside with a second of their own. With 14 games left in the season and three cup competitions still to play for, it is bound to be a dramatic end to the season for Liverpool.

Liverpool youngster set to sign new deal

As revealed by Fabrizio Romano on Friday evening, Liverpool are set to offer a new three-year deal to 17-year-old midfielder, Kieran Morrison, with a verbal agreement in place. Previously on the books at Manchester United, Morrison joined the Merseyside outfit at under-14s level before going on to star this season in the U18 Premier League.

A midfielder with an eye for a goal, Morrison is comfortable playing anywhere across the middle of the park and has earned plaudits in a red shirt. His performances at club level have seen him progress through his national set up, earning three caps for Northern Ireland's Under 19's side and standing out as one of his country's hottest prospects.

The youngster celebrated the news of his pending new deal with an excellent display in Saturday's 5-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers. Scoring two goals in a little over twenty seconds, Morrison netted a well-struck free-kick and a deft chip over the keeper to complete the Reds' dismantling of their opponents.

Taking his tally to seven goals in twelve games this campaign, Morrison has garnered praise from across Liverpool's academy with coach Marc Bridge-Wilkinson speaking highly of the youngster. Talking to the club website back in December, Bridge-Wilkinson said:

"Kieran has scored a few goals for us in the last few games and he has been quite bright… He has had a nice four or five weeks, including the international break as he did really well with Northern Ireland, so he is in a nice run of form."

Jarell Quansah's run in the first team as well as Conor Bradley's one goal and two assists in just two league appearances shows that this season has not been short of opportunities for youngsters to break into the Liverpool first team. Performing at a high level on a weekly basis and now committing his future for the next three years, there is no reason why Morrison cannot be the next great talent to breakthrough at Anfield.

Defiant Mark Cosgrove hundred seals draw for Leicestershire

Left-hander hits unbeaten ton as Durham fail to force win

A defiant century from Mark Cosgrove salvaged a draw for Leicestershire on the final day of their game against Durham at Emirates Riverside. The Australian began the day unbeaten on 21, with his team still 155 runs behind the home side. He battled throughout to keep the Durham bowlers at bay, even using his head on one occasion. Cosgrove held his composure, scoring his first century of the campaign to save his team from defeat before bad light ended the contest.Durham were frustrated in their attempts to claim the victory, although the pitch at the Riverside for once was not helpful to seam bowling. James Franklin’s men remain in contention for promotion, extending their unbeaten run in the Championship to seven games, but they will need raise their game in their remaining matches to beat out their rivals.Leicestershire began the day with Cosgrove and Colin Ackermann at the crease still trailing the home side by a significant margin. The two batsmen were able to see out the first hour with relative ease as the Durham bowlers were unable find life from the pitch.Cosgrove did provide one moment of bemusement in his otherwise untroubled morning, opting to leave a Ben Raine delivery that struck him straight on the helmet. Ackermann found his range to dispatch Liam Trevaskis for back-to-back boundaries before pulling Carse to the fence to bring up the fifty partnership from 139 deliveries. They fended off the threat in the morning session, reaching the interval unscathed, although still with work ahead to erase the deficit. After the interval, Cosgrove continued his impressive stand by moving to his half-century, drilling the ball through the covers to the fence from a short Carse delivery. Ackermann joined his team-mate by hitting two boundaries from the same over, reaching his sixth fifty of the campaign. The duo carried on their resistance, working their way past their century stand, but Ackermann eventually fell to Trevaskis by edging the ball to first slip. The home side attempted to put the clamps on Leicestershire, although Cosgrove remained a thorn in their side. Raine was able to dismiss Harry Dearden, who played down the wrong line and lost his off stump.Nathan Rimmington’s introduction into the attack from the Lumley End produced the wicket of Harry Swindells to give Durham hope of forcing a result at the tea break. Cosgrove and Gavin Griffiths held firm amid pressure from both seamers and spinners in the evening session. Durham captain Ned Eckersley tried to force the issue with time against his team after the visitors had edged into a slender lead.Trevaskis and Cameron Steel struck to remove Griffiths and Chris Wright to put the pressure on. Cosgrove upped the ante to notch his century from 261 deliveries, saving the game for Leicestershire as bad light brought a premature end to the game.

Chelsea could save millions with academy starlet who "can’t stop scoring"

As seems to be the case more often than not for Chelsea in recent times, the club seem to be failing to live up to their high standards as one of England's so-called 'Big-Six.'

The west London club have spent record fees on both permanent and temporary transfers since Todd Boehly took over from former owner, Roman Abramovich.

Despite splashing out over £1b on players since his takeover, it seems as if Chelsea have found themselves worse off than when Abramovich was their owner – far from the outcome that Boehly would have wanted when he bought the Blues over 18 months ago.

The club find themselves residing in mid-table, winning just two of their last five top-flight games, with such woes largely due to the problems they have suffered in front of goal as, at the time of writing, they have only managed to score a total of 42 goals in 25 Premier League games.

Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly

Although numerous attacking additions were made over the summer, with the likes of Cristopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson both joining the club, they haven't performed to the standards expected of them.

Granted, Nkunku has been injured for a total of 27 games for the Blues this season, but, after coming off the back of his most prolific domestic campaign for RB Leipzig last season, he was expected to perform better.

Jackson, on the other hand, hasn't missed any games due to injury and has almost cemented his place in Chelsea's starting Xi.

That said, he himself hasn't had the best of seasons and really needs to improve in front of goal if Chelsea wish to regain entry to the Champions League.

Nicolas Jackson's season in numbers

The 22-year-old joined the Blues in the summer for a fee worth around £31.8m and was expected to set the Premier League alight with his speed and agility.

Much like Nkunku, Jackson joined the club after his most prolific professional season with Villareal. The striker scored a total of 13 goals across all competitions and was the perfect partner for veteran, Gerard Moreno.

Throughout the 2023/24 campaign, Jackson has played a key role within the squad and has played a total of 27 games thus far. The vast majority of his goals (seven) have come in the Premier League, but almost half of those came in one game, when the attacker bagged his first Chelsea hat-trick against rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Although he managed to slot three past a nine-man Spurs side, his performances across the rest of the season have been somewhat unconvincing.

So much so that Chelsea new boy, Cole Palmer, has been deployed as a striker this season. According to Transfermarkt, in six of the 29 games that the Manchester City academy graduate has played in this season, he has been deployed as a striker or false nine

Prior to joining the Blues, Palmer had only been used as the focal point of the attack once in his senior career, with the previous examples coming whilst he was still within the youth ranks of the Cityzens.

Although Palmer himself is having something of a breakout season, he can't be entrusted to carry Mauricio Pochettino's team on his own just yet.

Hence, why players such as Jackson need to step up and help out in attack, yet if the form of the Senegal international continues as it has been, he could well be sold in the near future.

Pochettino's side have already been linked with Victor Osimhen from Napoli as a potential future target to aid them in the attacking department.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast's In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

However, as Jackson is one of the only natural strikers at the club at this moment in time who isn't absent due to injury, Chelsea may have to look in their youth ranks to turn their fortunes around.

If they were to do this, there is one player in particular who springs to mind, who could be exactly what Chelsea are looking for.

Ronnie Stutter's record at youth level

Much like most of the top six clubs in England's top flight, Chelsea have a stellar academy and have produced plenty of Premier League talent who have gone on to have long careers in one of the world's most difficult leagues.

Players such as John Terry, Mason Mount and Reece James have all graduated from Chelsea's academy and have had strong senior careers thus far.

It now looks as if they have yet another next-level talent on their hands in Ronnie Stutter. The striker is just 19 years old and "can't stop scoring" for Chelsea's U21s, as per journalist Antonio Mango.

Ronnie-stutter-chelsea

The promising striker was signed by the Blues in 2019 from fellow Londoners, West Ham United, in order to try and bolster their attacking options in their youth ranks.

After coming off a solid 2021/22 campaign, in which he scored 13 goals in 16 appearances, he suffered recurring injuries which halted his growth and performances.

The youngster has played a total of 13 games for the Blues' youth side and has managed to score nine goals during that time. The eye-catching marksman has even managed to provide his team with an assist.

The 2023/24 season has been Stutter's first season with the Under-21s, and he looks to have settled right, having even managed to score on his Under-21 debut while bagging five goals in August alone.

Now, due to the recent poor form of Jackson in front of the goal, Pochettino could well look towards Stutter to provide the team with something different.

His addition to the first-team squad could help the club finally end their search for a striker. As aforementioned, many of Chelsea's senior team members have come from within, with the likes of James and Conor Gallagher being some recent examples.

If Pochettino decides to take the risk and play the forward over the likes of Jackson, he may unearth Chelsea's next gem and save the club from spending more money than what they have already done.

Monk sold Leeds star in 2016 who’s now worth more than Glen Kamara

Leeds United have produced some impressive young talents over the years and Archie Gray appears to be the latest star to come off the production line.

German head coach Daniel Farke was brought in to manage the team last summer and immediately placed his trust in the talented teenager to be a regular in the side.

Gray has already started 29 league matches and featured in 31 of the club's Championship games so far this season, despite not turning 18 until next month.

Archie Gray for Leeds United.

The 17-year-old gem has emerged as the first-choice right-back, having started the campaign as a central midfielder, but does not face competition from recent signing Connor Roberts.

Premier League giants Liverpool have already been linked with an interest in the impressive youngster, and Leeds will have to be careful to make sure they can either keep hold of him or extract maximum value from any potential sale.

That was not the case when they decided to cash in on former academy graduate Lewis Cook, whose value soared after moving on from Elland Road in 2016, and is currently worth more than first-team star Glen Kamara.

The fee Leeds were paid for Cook

Premier League side Bournemouth swooped in to sign the exciting young central midfielder from the Yorkshire-based outfit ahead of the 2016/17 campaign.

The Guardian reported that the Cherries splashed out an initial fee of £6m to secure his services, although they added that it could rise to £10m with add-ons. However, it remains unknown as to what those add-ons are and if Leeds have earned any extra money on top of the initial £6m they raked in.

Then-manager Garry Monk revealed that the club and himself tried hard to persuade the promising talent to remain at Elland Road, through a new contract and the footballing side of things.

However, they were not able to do enough to convince the star to stay with the club or sign an extension, which turned out to be a blunder as they undersold him, based on his subsequent soaring market value.

Former Leeds midfielder Lewis Cook

Cook made 43 appearances for Leeds in the Championship during the 2015/16 campaign and contributed with one goal and two assists from midfield.

He also made a big impact out of possession with 3.0 tackles and interceptions per game for the team, which shows that the young gem was constantly working hard to win the ball back for Leeds by cutting out opposition attacks.

That came after Cook had played 37 times in the second tier throughout the 2014/15 campaign, which was his debut season in first-team football.

He made 85 senior appearances for Leeds in total across those two seasons, after coming through the academy set-up, and had already been capped by England at U16, U17, U18, and U19 level by the summer of 2016.

His form for club and country at a young age was enough to convince Bournemouth to spend an initial £6m to snap him up to bolster Eddie Howe's squad in 2016, and it has turned out to be an astute addition for the Cherries.

Lewis Cook's current market value

At the time of writing (24/02/2024), Cook is valued at €10m (£8.5m) by Transfermarkt at the age of 27, but that is not the peak of his market value during his time on the south coast.

Between the summer of 2018 and December 2019 – an 18-month period – Transfermarkt valued the central midfielder at a whopping €20m (£17.1m).

This means that his value had soared by a staggering £11.1m from the £6m that Bournemouth initially paid to sign him, and £7.1m more than the total package of £10m including add-ons.

His soaring market value after leaving Elland Road suggests that Monk and Leeds had a blunder when they sold him in 2016 for just £6m up front, as they did not maximise his value.

Bournemouth midfielder Lewis Cook

However, it was not an easy rise for Cook as his first season was disrupted by an ankle injury that forced him to miss 41 competitive matches.

He battled his way back to fitness and featured in 29 Premier League games, starting 25 of them, during the 2017/18 campaign. In that time, the English maestro caught the eye with 3.5 tackles and interceptions combined and 1.7 dribbles completed per game.

Cook has gone on to rack up 203 appearances for Bournemouth in all competitions, including a two-year spell in the Championship, and is currently starring for them in the top-flight.

Lewis Cook's 2023/24 statistics

The 27-year-old dynamo, who was hailed as "amazing" by manager Andoni Iraola earlier this season, has started 19 Premier League matches this term and has been a defensive monster for them with 4.1 tackles and interceptions per game – more than any of his teammates.

Glen Kamara's current market value

Meanwhile, Leeds midfielder Kamara, who was snapped up from Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers last summer, is currently worth less than Cook.

At the time of writing (24/02/2024), the Finland international is valued at €6m (£5.1m) and that is €500k more than his valuation at the time of his move from Ibrox ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

The 28-year-old gem, who is one year older than the Bournemouth maestro, has, however, been an impressive performer in midfield for the Whites.

As you can see in the table above, the former Gers star has been an outstanding passer in the Championship this term with both his ability to retain possession and progress the play from a deep-lying midfield position.

Kamara does not, however, offer the same defensive attributes as Cook in the middle of the park as he has only made 1.9 tackles and interceptions per game for the Whites.

His exceptional passing and ability to control the tempo of a game in midfield does make him a valuable player for Farke and Leeds, though.

The club appear to have made a blunder when they sold Cook for £6m, due to his soaring market value and current performances in the Premier League, but they do also have an excellent option in Kamara right now, even if he is not worth as much as their former academy graduate.
