Chris Green, Shadab Khan lead Guyana Amazon Warriors to opening win

The two spinners claimed five wickets between them to put a target of 156 beyond the reach of St Lucia Zouks

The Report by Deivarayan Muthu06-Sep-2019

Left-arm seamer Obed McCoy bagged career-best T20 figures of 4 for 41 and Rahkeem Cornwall blitzed 36 off 14 balls, but it still wasn’t enough for St Lucia Zouks as Guyana Amazon Warriors opened their CPL 2019 campaign with a 13-run win in front of a boisterous home crowd at Providence. In pursuit of 156, Zouks enjoyed a blistering start, with Cornwall carting six boundaries in a mere eight balls. However, spinners Shadab Khan and Chris Green claimed five wickets between them to put the target beyond their opponents’ reach.ALSO READ – CPL updates: St Kitts and Nevis Patriots penalised for slow over rateIt was stand-in captain Green who took the prized scalp of Cornwall and marshalled his resources smartly after regular captain Shoaib Malik copped a blow on his right forearm in the batting innings and did not take the field in the chase. His arm was seen in a sling at one point, but Green said later that it was just a precautionary measure. The calm before the storm
Zouks will be without Lasith Malinga for the entire CPL 2019, but Krishmar Santokie and Kesrick Williams made an early impression with their pace variations and reduced Amazon Warriors to 25 for 2 in the fourth over. Shimron Hetmyer tempered his naturally attacking strokeplay and set about working past the early strikes along with Malik on a slow Providence track. They put on 48 together in 47 balls before McCoy duped Hetmyer with his back-of-the-hand variation in the 12th over. Guyana’s new marquee player Nicholas Pooran fell for a golden duck and then Fawad Ahmed had both Malik as well as Sherfane Rutherford stumped with fizzing wrong’uns, but Keemo Paul and Green landed the mighty blows at the death. They, too, forged a 48-run stand, but this came at a breakneck speed, off only 21 balls.Paul showed why he was named West Indies’ T20 player of the year, marrying power with composure. He took seven balls to get off the mark, but then teed off with a rasping slogged six over midwicket against the break off Fawad. He pressed on to smash Santokie for three successive boundaries in the penultimate over of the innings, helping Amazon Warriors breach 150.Jimbo’s opening salvo
Shadab had Andre Fletcher chopping on for 8, but Cornwall showed off his T20 prowess a week after making his Test debut. He golf-swung Paul down the ground, short-arm jabbed Ben Laughlin over the midwicket boundary, and laced Green against the turn over extra-cover. However, moments after he had taken Green for back-to-back fours, he was pinned lbw by a slider. Where’s your middle order, Zouks?
Malinga’s Sri Lanka team-mate Niroshan Dickwella, too, had pulled out of the tournament while big-hitting New Zealand allrounder Colin de Grandhomme was away on international duty. The onus was on Darren Sammy, Thisara Perera, Najibullah Zadran and Chris Barnwell to see off the chase. But the spin of Shadab and the seam of Romario Shepherd were too much for the allrounders. From 52 for 2, Zouks slid rapidly to 109 for 7. Shadab, in particular, excelled with his legbreaks and googlies that gripped and turned sharply.Santokie made a late cameo (15* off 9 balls), but all it did was to reduce the margin of defeat. These are still early days in the tournament, but Zouks need to patch up their flimsy middle order.

Big update regarding Newcastle’s pursuit of “world-class” international ace

A significant update has emerged regarding Newcastle United's chance of signing a "world-class" player this summer, according to a new transfer report.

Newcastle eyeing summer signings

The Magpies have had a season of struggle overall, failing to convince in the Premier League and the Champions League, with injuries proving to be damaging. It is clear that plenty of new signings will be needed once the summer transfer window arrives, and recent rumours suggest that owners PIF could already be looking to bring in reinforcements.

Newcastle are believed to be willing to meet the release clause of Real Sociedad attacker Takefusa Kubo, who is enjoying an impressive season for the La Liga side, scoring seven goals in the league in 2023/24 to date.

Another player who has been linked with an exciting move to St James' Park is Juventus wide-man Federico Chiesa, who could possibly want a new challenge once the current campaign reaches its conclusion.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

It also remains to be seen if Eddie Howe will still be in charge of Newcastle once next season gets underway, with some reports suggesting that the owners could dispose of him in the summer, bringing in a bigger name to succeed the current boss.

Germany manager and former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann is seen as a leading contender to come in and replace the Englishman, with the 36-year-old often preferring a 4-2-3-1 formation, which is a slight tweak to Howe's preferred 4-3-3 system, but not so different that the current squad would struggle to adapt to the change.

Key Federico Chiesa to Newcastle update

According to a new update from Tuttosport [via Sport Witness], Newcastle have suffered a blow in their efforts to sign Chiesa this summer.

The Italian is believed to have "declined advances" of both the Magpies and Aston Villa, while Jurgen Klopp's imminent exit as Liverpool manager also lessens their chances of snapping him up, such is the German's reputation.

This is a real blow for Newcastle, considering what a top-quality player Chiesa is, even being lauded as "world-class" by former Italy international Alessandro Pierini, who has said:

"He’s world-class. He has all the ability and desire of a great player. If he improves, then he’ll be even better than his father [Enrico]. I have loads of respect for Enrico and all he has done to help Federico come on as a player until now."

Chiesa is also an international champion with Italy, having been a key player during their successful Euro 2020 campaign, scoring twice at the tournament and featuring in all seven matches, also proving to be one of the best wide players on show.

At 26 years of age, there could be so much more to come from him with his peak years potentially ahead of him, so the hope is that Newcastle's situation changes and they are able to snap him up this summer.

Simon Harmer, Aron Nijjar spin Essex to first T20 final

Hard-hitting fifty from Cameron Delport sets up Essex before spinners strangle chase

David Hopps21-Sep-2019

Simon Harmer celebrates another breakthrough•Getty Images

Simon Harmer hadn’t had a particularly rewarding Blast season. Unstoppable in the Championship, he had generally become a mere mortal over 20 overs. Then Derbyshire, in their first T20 Finals Day, had to contend with him on a turning Edgbaston pitch and the story changed as his destructive display pointed Essex towards a comprehensive victory and added another satisfying memory to an outstanding summer.Harmer has been Essex’s Championship showstopper: his 78 wickets at 18.12 are the prime reason why they have a title showdown with Somerset at Taunton next week. As Essex’s captain in the Blast, however, he had mustered 10 wickets all season and disappeared for nine an over. He was just another player hoping that Edgbaston might look favourably upon him.All that changed in a second semi-final in which Derbyshire succumbed meekly on a turning surface, falling 34 runs short of Essex’s challenging 160 for 5. They didn’t play spin particularly well, and a couple of their dismissals could fairly be described as naïve, but when it comes to facing Harmer they are not alone in that charge.Harmer finished with 4 for 19, his tranquillity never threatened, and he had quite an ally, too, in Aron Nijjar, a 24-year-old left-arm spinner from Romford, who had the onerous task of replacing the modish Australian leggie Adam Zampa on Finals Day in only his second Twenty20 match, conceded 14 runs in his first four balls, but lived to tell a glorious tale as Essex won a T20 semi-final at the fifth attempt.Harmer and Nijjar took three wickets apiece in the space of 58 balls, five of them hitting the stumps. When the sixth batsman to perish, Alex Hughes, was lured down the pitch by Nijjar and stumped, so fell Derbyshire’s top-scorer, on 23. There was another wicket for a spinner, too, when Dan Lawrence bowled Fynn Hudson-Prentice.Harmer’s first ball jolted Derbyshire, their captain, Billy Godleman, the second batsmen to fall as he turned one sharply to hit the left-hander’s off stump. He repeated the dose in his third over against Leus du Plooy, another left-hander, another delivery that turned big. Next ball, Anuj Dal, determined to use his feet, ran at one and was bowled through the gate. His last wicket was Daryn Smit, who tried to reverse sweep him past two fielders at backward point, the most befuddled shot of all.”I’m used to seeing the ball disappear so it’s nice to bowl on something that suits me,” Harmer said. Essex started their Blast campaign in the South Group so badly that they have essentially been playing knockout cricket for six matches, knowing that one more defeat would be fatal, and the knowledge has improved them.Nijjar will attract less attention, but his contribution was, in a way, all the more remarkable because he had not bowled a single delivery in Essex 1st XI cricket all season. His last game of note was a 2nd XI match against Hampshire at Southampton in the first week of August. When Wayne Madsen sniffed vulnerability and struck him for 4-6-4 in his first four balls, things looked ominous; for him to then bowl Madsen round his legs, trying to sweep, was a crucial response.Derbyshire were the last of the 18 counties to reach Finals Day and for all but the most committed follower of county cricket they could hardly have been more of an unknown quantity. Names did not as much trip off the tongue as go clean out of the mind. Obscurity, for a few hours at least, was in vogue. A side that reached the final stages by toppling Lancashire at Old Trafford were clearly capable of being better than the sum of their parts, and they will be deflated by their display.Essex took command with an opening stand of 78 in 8.1 overs, Cameron Delport the dominant factor. His 55 from 31 balls gave him 408 runs for the tournament and the highest strike rate, at 172.15, of any of the 13 batsmen who had passed that 400-run mark. He might have fallen early, a leg-side swing against Logan van Beek falling safely when he was only 6, but his strokeplay became increasingly daunting until he deposited Hughes to long-off.Once Delport had been silenced, Derbyshire shook themselves down and gradually got back into the match on a grippy surface that suited their medium-paced mix. Lawrence, who has grown into the T20 format this season by adopting a more aggressive approach, made little impact as he carved Hughes’ knuckle ball to third man; Ryan ten Doeschate, lbw to Luis Reece’s offcutter, also missed out.Tom Westley, Delport’s opening partner, played the other innings of substance, 39 from 34 balls, although he, too, had fortune on his side, on 13, when van Beek failed to throw him out from mid-on. Westley’s departure to Reece at deep backward square leg preceded a problematic finish for Essex as they failed to find the boundary for 37 deliveries, from Ravi Bopara’s third-man dab off Reece to Adam Wheater’s square drive four balls from the end when Ravi Rampaul narrowly missed his yorker.Bopara has crabbed all season about batting as a finisher at No. 6, and who found himself up at five for Finals Day. His scoring rate in the closing overs has been spectacular, justifying his place in the order, but it was a more restrained Bopara (28 from 23 balls when a ramp shot went awry) who guided then to 160 for 5. It was easily enough.

Howe must replace Willock with Newcastle’s "remarkable" 6 ft 1 dynamo

Newcastle United turn their attention away from the Premier League this evening as they prepare to travel to The Etihad to take on Manchester City in the FA Cup.

The Magpies have a chance to reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup, which would be their second trip to Wembley since the start of last year after the League Cup final in 2023.

Eddie Howe's side head into this match against the reigning champions of the competition off the back of a 3-2 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

Newcastle, despite the tight scoreline, were comfortably beaten by the Blues – who were 3-1 up before Jacob Murphy's stoppage-time stunner – on the night in a game that appeared to pass too many players in black and white by.

Joe Willock was one of those who struggled in London as he failed to showcase the best of his abilities in the middle of the park, which is why Howe must ruthlessly ditch him from the starting XI to unleash Lewis Miley from the start.

Joe Willock's stats against Chelsea

The former Arsenal academy graduate lined up alongside Bruno Guimaraes and Sean Longstaff in central midfield, and was unable to impress.

He played the opening 80 minutes of the match, by which point Newcastle were 3-1 down, and struggled in and out of possession throughout the game.

Willock lost 60% (6/10) of his ground duels in midfield as Chelsea's players found it too easy to get the better of him in physical contests on the night, with Moises Caicedo, Conor Gallagher, and Enzo Fernandez winning the battle in that area of the park.

Joe Willock

Meanwhile, the English whiz only made one key pass – and did not create any 'big chances' for his teammates – in possession and completed 86% of his attempted passes, along with zero shots on target.

These statistics show that the 24-year-old dynamo, who had the lowest Sofascore rating (6.5) of the three starting midfielders, did not make a big impact on or off the ball for the Magpies.

Willock, who completed just one of his five attempted dribbles, did not provide strong defensive work to keep Chelsea at bay and did not use his ability in possession to make things happen in the final third to drag his team back into the match.

It has been a frustrating season for the midfielder as he has missed a whopping 30 games through injury, with hamstring and Achilles issues, which has restricted him to just six appearances and three starts in the Premier League this term.

As you can see in the table above, Willock was handed a start in the last FA Cup match against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park but was taken off after 61 minutes following a dismal display – understandably given his injury issues – in midfield.

His fitness problems and lack of good form – possibly due to his spells on the sidelines – is a real shame as the Magpies maestro enjoyed a terrific 2022/23 campaign.

Joe Willock's creative quality for Newcastle in 22/23

The Newcastle star was fit for the majority of last season as he featured in 35 of the club's 38 Premier League matches on their way to Champions League qualification.

Willock did struggle in front of goal as a finisher, with just three strikes from an Expected Goals of 7.00, but did showcase his ability as a creator for Howe.

The 24-year-old gem created 12 'big chances' for his teammates in 31 Premier League starts, which led to him registering six assists for the team.

elliot-anderson-joe-willock-newcastle-opinion-premier-league

He ranked within the top 10% of Premier League midfielders for assists (0.21) per 90, and the top 9% for Expected Assisted Goals (0.21) per 90, which shows that the Toon whiz was one of the best players in his position at creating high-quality opportunities in the final third.

Willock also ranked within the top 6% of his positional peers for progressive carries (3.41) per 90, which shows that he could drive his team up the pitch in possession.

Unfortunately, his injury woes have stunted his progress this season and Howe must now brutally ditch him from the XI to unleash Miley against Manchester City, as the Magpies may not be able to afford a poor display from Willock against the likes of Rodri and Kevin de Bruyne.

Lewis Miley's impressive emergence this season

The 17-year-old academy graduate has emerged as a genuine first-team option for Newcastle this season with his impressive performances in the middle of the park.

He has made 17 appearances in the Premier League so far this term and caught the eye with one goal, three assists, and three 'big chances' created in 14 starts.

Interestingly, Miley currently ranks within the top 11% of midfielders in the English top-flight for assists (0.22) per 90, which shows that he is creating goals for his teammates at a similar rate to Willock last season.

As you can see in the table above, the two English midfielders are also similar when it comes to the defensive side of the game, as they both average between two and three tackles and interceptions per game.

However, Miley has won more than half of his physical duels throughout the season, whereas Willock was a little bit weak in his battles during the 2022/23 campaign, and this suggests that he could offer more physicality against Rodri and De Bruyne in midfield.

U23 scout Antonio Mango hailed the academy graduate's transition to first-team football as "remarkable" and these statistics back that up, as the 6 foot 1 star has performed at an impressive level despite his age and inexperience.

He has offered similar quality, offensively and defensively, in comparison to Willock when the ex-Gunners whiz was fit and playing regularly last term, which is why Howe must now replace the underperforming 24-year-old with Miley for this clash with City.

Antes dele, vieram Humberto Cabelli (URU), Joreca (POR), Ventura Cambom (URU), Caetano Di Domenico (ITA), Jim López (ARG), Bela Gutman (HUN) e José Poy (ARG).

PIF using connections to bid for “incredible” ace perfect for Newcastle

Newcastle United owners PIF are reportedly using their connections to help complete the signing of an "incredible" player in the summer transfer window.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies have been linked with numerous new signings in recent weeks as Eddie Howe aims to avoid a repeat of what has been an underwhelming season at St James' Park.

One such figure who has emerged as a summer target for Newcastle is RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko, who is considered a potential replacement for Callum Wilson, who could depart once this season reaches its conclusion.

At the other end of the pitch, Juventus centre-back Gleison Bremer is reportedly being viewed as a strong option to come in, especially with Sven Botman now facing months on the sidelines after suffering a devastating ACL injury and possibly not even featuring for the rest of this year.

In the middle of the park, another Juve player, Adrien Rabiot, is being looked at by the Magpies, with the Frenchman out of contract at the Serie A giants in the summer. The hope is that Newcastle retain the services of Bruno Guimaraes, but if he does move on, the Frenchman could be seen as an ideal replacement.

PIF eyeing Newcastle move for "incredible" ace

According to a fresh claim from Football Transfers, Newcastle are interested in signing Feyenoord left-back Quilindschy Hartman this summer, with PIF trying to make their influence shine through.

The report states that left-back is a "key area that Eddie Howe wishes to strengthen", and the fact that the Magpies have youngster Yankuba Minteh on loan at Feyenoord means that they have a "good relationship" with the Dutch side – something seen as potentially "significant" should they push for a deal.

Feyenoord's Quilindschy Hartman reacts

Not only that, but the update goes on to say that Hartman's qualities are "said to be perfect for Premier League football", with the defender "extremely rapid, a tenacious tackler, and possesses unbelievable stamina and energy that enable him to cover the left flank for the entirety of the 90 minutes."

All of this points towards the 22-year-old being a fantastic signing for Newcastle this summer, with so many attributes in his game, not to mention still being a young player. Scout Antonio Mango has hailed him as "incredible" in the past, and he could be viewed as an upgrade on Dan Burn, as well as a more natural left-back.

This season, Hartman has picked up five assists in 25 appearances for Feyenoord in the Eredivisie, also winning an average of 1.8 tackles per game, showing that he can be an attacking threat but also a solid defender. He is also now a four-cap Netherlands international, scoring once for his country in that time.

What a signing this could be by the Magpies.

ByHenry Jackson Mar 22, 2024

At 22, there is still so much more to come from the Dutchman, and if Newcastle could acquire his signature, using the PIF's influence in the process, it could prove to be a superb long-term piece of business.
