Everton must bin £112k-p/w star who’s now worth less than Tarkowski

Everton have conducted some questionable business in the transfer market in recent years, signing multiple players who have failed to make any impact at the club.

Morgan Schneiderlin joined the Toffees from Manchester United for £24m before struggling to prove any sort of worth for his hefty fee, before departing the club for a minimal fee just a few years after his move to Merseyside.

The club spent more than £100m on new additions during the 2019/20 season, with players such as Alex Iwobi joining for around £35m.

However, the club also purchased another talent who had huge expectations upon his move to England, but he's failed to take the Premier League by storm, with his time at Everton tarnished by injuries.

Andre Gomes's stats at Everton

After joining the club for £22m from Barcelona during the summer of 2019, midfielder Andre Gomes was viewed as a player who could catapult the Toffees back into the European places.

He initially joined Everton back in 2018 on loan before a permanent deal was secured. However, Gomes has failed to live up to the early promise he showed in a Toffees shirt over his lengthy current five-year stay.

His time at Goodison Park has been scattered with injury issues, with the Portuguese midfielder on the receiving end of a Heung-min Son tackle which left him with a serious ankle injury in 2019.

Gomes has only managed 11 appearances in all competitions for Sean Dyche's side this campaign, with the Toffees boss preferring the likes of James Garner and Idrissa Gueye ahead of the 30-year-old.

The midfielder has managed to feature 111 times for Everton since he arrived on Merseyside, but with his injury record coupled with his contract which expires at the end of the season, the club may need to brutally get rid of the Portuguese playmaker to raise needed funds.

Andre Gomes' current market value

After joining the club permanently, the midfielder signed a contract worth £112k-per-week, as per Spotrac, making him the club's third-highest earner behind Abdoulaye Doucoure and Jordan Pickford.

However, his lack of game time has seen the 30-year-old's market value rapidly decline, with Gomes now only valued at £4.2m, as per CIES Football Observatory – a figure that is lower than teammate James Tarkowski, who is valued at £8.5m.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

That truly does put it into perspective considering that Tarkowksi is actually older, at 31, and was snapped up on a free from Burnley in 2022, in contrast to the £22m dished out on Gomes.

It's a real shame to see a player who had a lot of talent fade away, with injuries the main cause of the latter man's downfall at Goodison Park.

Everton midfielder Andre Gomes.

Despite his troubles, football is a ruthless industry and given the club's precarious position with the Premier League's strict PSR and FFP rules, Dyche needs to make the brutal decision to part ways with the Portuguese midfielder at the end of the campaign.

His weekly wage would see the club save £6.2m each year, a figure that simply can't be turned down given the Toffees' battle to comply with the PSR rules in the future.

Handling spinners in Hamilton 'some of the best in a long time' – Martin Guptill

The opener showered praises on the NZ batsmen for handling Jasprit Bumrah well

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Feb-20202:04

We played Bumrah, spinners very well in first ODI – Guptill

Opener Martin Guptill believes the way the New Zealand batsmen handled the Indian spinners in the first ODI in Hamilton was some of the best they have done in a long time.In their four-wicket win, New Zealand hammered Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav for a total of 148 runs from 20 overs to chase down their highest ODI total of 348. Guptill said they will have to be “little more attacking” during the second ODI in Auckland on Saturday, given the short boundaries at Eden Park.”It’s completely different conditions, isn’t it? You have to be a little bit more attacking here I guess and have the confidence that the ball probably will not spin past your edge as much. You know the odd one might as it did the other night,” Guptill said on Friday.Guptill wants to be around for 2023 World Cup

Opener Martin Guptill has clarified that he wants to stick around for the next 50-over World Cup, to be played in India. Guptill will be nearly 36 by then but is confident that “pending body issues and form” he will be able to stay around for another three years.
“Absolutely,” he said. “Pending body issues and form and things like that, hopefully I can stick around and put enough numbers on the board to be in that squad.”
New Zealand are playing their first ODI series since losing in the World Cup final last year and will play another three in Australia next month, which Guptill wants to make the most of. “I don’t think one-day cricket is going anywhere, there’s still a World Cup to play for in three years’ time, and leading up to that there’s going to be a lot of ODI cricket. I enjoy the ODI format, so hopefully there’s plenty more to come.” Guptill has been part of the last three World Cups in which New Zealand have made it to the semi-final once and the final twice.

“I thought the way we handled the Indian spinners in Hamilton was some of the best we have done it in a long time. So we can take confidence from that going forward in the series.”Yadav’s figures of 2 for 84 were his most expensive in ODIs, and he was attacked particularly by the left-hand batsmen Tom Latham and Henry Nicholls on Wednesday. Latham struck him for 31 runs off 17 balls by using the sweep effectively, while Nicholls collected 18 runs off nine balls against the wristspinner. Nicholls and Latham weren’t as attacking against Jadeja, but Ross Taylor, who scored a century, made up for it by scoring 28 off 22 against the orthodox spinner.ALSO READ: New Zealand bounce back from sweep – with the sweepAnother threat New Zealand negated was of Jasprit Bumrah, who played a crucial role in India’s 5-0 sweep of the T20Is, by being more circumspect against him early on and not giving a single wicket in the game. Guptill said it was more about getting used to facing Bumrah than becoming “comfortable” facing him.”Don’t know [it ever gets] comfortable facing him,” he said. “But you certainly get used to him. He has got a unique action, he comes in and he is very good with his skills. I thought we played him well on the other night.ALSO READ: India must shake New Zealand off plan A to stay alive”He bowled very well with the new ball and when the time came to take boundaries off him I thought the guys in the middle did that really well and negated him and [did not allow him] to take early wickets.”Guptill also praised stand-in captain Latham for his 69 off 48 at No. 5. Returning from injury after sustaining a fractured finger during the SCG Test against Australia last month, Latham started slow by scoring only four runs off his first 14 balls before unleashing his sweeps against Yadav.”I thought Tom played brilliantly,” Guptill said. “He gave himself some time to get in and then flipped the switch when he needed to and took the pressure a little bit off Ross. It allowed Ross to settle into his own innings as well.”Then between 25 to 40 over mark, they just took the game away from India with that match-winning partnership.”Eden Park’s odd dimensions add a bit of uncertainty for the second ODI, Guptill said, where he and Nicholls would want to see through the first 10 overs to set a platform for the middle order.”This ground is different, isn’t it? You want to go out and start the way we can and stay as positive as possible. It could be 70 for no loss or it could be 40 for no loss. You just don’t know until we go out there and assess the conditions.”You want to go out there being positive. Unfortunately in the game of cricket if you lose couple of wickets early you have to rebuild. But if Henry and I can get across the 10-over mark then hopefully take it as deep as possible.”

Latest Aston Villa injury news, return dates and suspensions

Aston Villa have surpassed expectations this year in the Premier League, and even looked like title challengers at one point.

Unai Emery's side currently sit in the lofty heights of fourth, though in order for a Champions League place to be secured, they'll need to avoid injuries to key men and continue to maintain the gap between them and Spurs.

With that in mind, Football FanCast is here to keep you updated with the latest injury and suspension news ahead of Saturday's evening clash with Chelsea.

Latest Aston Villa injury news

Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings.

Unai Emery has six squad members unavailable ahead of Chelsea's visit to Villa Park this weekend. The player to return to the squad will be Douglas Luiz, who has served his yellow-card suspension. Otherwise, the clash against the Blues comes too soon for Nicolo Zaniolo and Alex Moreno, who both have minor problems and could return next week.

Long-term absentees Jacob Ramsey, Tyrone Mings, Emiliano Buendia and Boubacar Kamara are all out until the start of next season at the earliest.

Nicolo Zaniolo – unknown

Nicolo Zaniolo missed the midweek win over Bournemouth through injury, and while Emery was hopeful that the Italian wouldn't be on the treatment table for long, he will not be fit enough to take part this weekend.

Whether he is fit for next week's Europa Conference League semi-final first leg against Olympiacos remains to be seen, but he appears to be the Villa player closest to a first-team return.

Alex Moreno – calf

Alex Moreno has been out recently with a calf issue, with Unai Emery previously claiming that it would see him out for around 2-3 weeks. This weekend's game against Chelsea was unlikely to mark his comeback, but he could return in time for next week's clash away at Brighton, with the Europa Conference League semi-finals also coming up.

Jacob Ramsey – foot

Jacob Ramsey is set to be out for the remainder of the season after suffering a foot injury, with Emery confirming he will play no further part in the campaign earlier this month.

Tyrone Mings – knee

tyrone-mings-aston-villa-unai-emery-ollie-watkins

Tyrone Mings suffered a significant knee injury on the opening day of the season against Newcastle United, and Villa quickly confirmed that he would require surgery to resolve the issue.

The defender is making progress in his recovery, with a comment coming out of Aston Villa:

"When they are injured for a long time, it's the worst in football. It's more difficult for the player, as a person, when they are injured. We've had two injuries for a long time, for all the season, with Buendia and Mings."

He still hasn't made an Aston Villa squad, but he can't be far away now.

Emi Buendia – knee

emi-buendia-aston-villa-arsenal-transfer-gossip-edu-arteta-santi-cazorla

Aston Villa confirmed that Argentine midfielder Emi Buendia had suffered a 'significant knee ligament injury' in training a day before the season started.

Similarly to Mings, he can't be too far away now, though there's been no timeline given by Emery, with him clearly not wanting to rush the midfielder back to action.

Boubacar Kamara – ACL

Boubacar Kamara in Premier League action for Aston Villa.

Boubacar Kamara last featured for Villa in their defeat to Manchester United, with it later confirmed that he had suffered an ACL rupture.

Emery has insisted that a likely return date won't be until September or October at the earliest.

Aston Villa latest suspensions

Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz

There are no suspensions for Aston Villa this weekend. Douglas Luiz missed the clashes against Arsenal and Bournemouth after picking up his 10th yellow card of the season. Luckily, it seems like Villa did not miss him after winning both matches, and they will have him available for selection against Chelsea this weekend.

Low-stakes domestic cricket leaves South Africa short on death-bowling nous – Charl Langeveldt

Only two Mzansi Super League games have seen a bowling team close out a close game in the final over

The absence of proper pressure in South Africa’s domestic competitions is leaving bowlers ill-equipped to handle similar situations on the international stage, according to bowling coach Charl Langeveldt.Speaking three days after Mark Boucher assessed his bowlers’ skill levels as not being good enough following South Africa’s failure to defend totals in two out of the three T20 matches in the recently completed England series, Langeveldt said more practice at franchise level is essential for his young pack.ALSO READ: Hamstrung Bavuma out of first T20I”It was disappointing, especially with the scores we had. I thought we could have defended that but in saying that, not a lot of guys get into that position in domestic cricket,” Langeveldt said. “It’s a concern for me. It’s not good enough. In World Cups, you are going to get a lot of games like that. And if I look around the country, domestic cricket, the close games aren’t like it used to be.”The evidence from the Mzansi Super League (MSL), South Africa’s flagship T20 competition, supports Langeveldt’s claim. In 54 completed matches across two editions of the tournament, only three matches have reached their stage where the fielding team needed to defend fewer than 15 runs to win off the last over. On two occasions, they were successful, once in 2018 when Andrew Birch of the Tshwane Spartans ensured they beat the Paarl Rocks and then in 2019, when Sri Lanka’s Isuru Udana gave Paarl Rocks victory over the Cape Town Blitz. While Udana has been in action against India recently, Birch has never played for South Africa despite a strong domestic record.Instead, it is a new crop of quicks that Langeveldt has been tasked with moulding into death bowlers and the one he sees as best-placed to do the job is no longer in the squad. “A guy like [Sisanda] Magala, from seeing him in the nets, he is the most confident,” Langeveldt said. But uncapped Magala was dropped from the squad having spent the England series working to pass a fitness test that would see him debut. He has returned to his franchise, the Warriors, and was named in their team to play a domestic one-day cup match on Tuesday, which was rained off.Magala is due to continue working with South Africa’s fitness trainer to meet the team’s requirements and remains a candidate for the T20 World Cup but for now, Langeveldt is looking at Lungi Ngidi and Andile Phehlukwayo to do the job and the latter, specifically. “has gone a bit backwards.” Phehluwayo’s changes of pace used to be key to South Africa’s ability to contain but he has struggled with his consistency. One of the only ways to improve on that is repetition and Langeveldt is trying to emphasis that. “It’s training. The same way you train bowling length every day, with yorkers you have to train it,” he said. “It’s when to release the ball.”But even then, bowling in the nets is entirely different to pulling it off in a match, when eyes and expectation are on you and that is something Langeveldt can’t teach. “The big thing is to land it under pressure. You can execute it in the nets but it’s when you are in the game, you need to be able to,” he said. “It’s sometimes difficult to coach that to a guy because he needs to figure it out for himself, once he is out in the middle. You can give him the tools, it’s what he does with them.”Dale Steyn celebrates dismissing Jos Buttler•Getty Images

While Langeveldt’s focus is on “mentally preparing” his bowlers, he also hopes the inclusion of experienced players like Dale Steyn and Kagiso Rabada will bring belief into group. Rabada was rested for the white-ball games against England, after being suspended from the final Test, and spent his time at NBA All-Star game in Chicago. He arrived in Johannesburg on Wednesday, “refreshed and ready to get straight back to work,” which is exactly what Langeveldt hoped would happen.”Renewed focus is a good thing. As 24-year-old playing for your country all the time, you’re always under pressure,” Langeveldt said. “He was our leading bowler for a couple of years and probably still is so hopefully he brings that energy back.”One thing that is certain is that Rabada will bring intent, especially against Australia. His most recent history with them involved a shoulder-brush with Steve Smith which almost saw him banned for a match in the 2018 Tests series but he successfully appealed the charge. He has since earned a further demerit point for an aggressive send-off which included screaming at Joe Root and entering his space during the Port Elizabeth Test and has promised to contain his passions for the good of the team in future. But Langeveldt hopes not too much. “KG will always bring that competitiveness. He is competitive by nature. He wants to take wickets and we will definitely use our bumpers,” Langeveldt warned. “But he also needs to control the aggression. Be controlled with your lines, lengths and your bouncer.”

England’s Physical Disability cricket squad is aiming to complete a marathon a day to help raise funds for the Lord’s Taverners. The squad, which finished as runners-up in the Physical Disability World Series last summer, has pledged to complete 26 miles of running every day for at least ten days, as part of the #TwoPointSixChallenge fundraising drive.Twelve members of the side are sharing their training efforts online as they look to complete their challenge of more than 260 miles.Callum Flynn, a member of England’s PD squad, said: “Like all athletes, we wish we could be outside playing right now, so while we wait to return the pitch, we all wanted to put our energy into something positive.”We decided to raise funds for the fantastic work of the Lord’s Taverners and hopefully raise the profile of disability cricket at the same time. We are looking to run at least 260 miles collectively over the next 10 days. “We know from our own experiences what cricket can do for people with a disability – how it can improve your confidence, your health and ultimately your life. It would be amazing if we could raise some money to support the Lord’s Taverners and their life-changing work.”Tom Harrison, ECB Chief Executive Officer, said: “Our disability squads consistently amaze us with what they achieve both on and off the field. These guys are exceptional cricketers and individuals and we are incredibly proud of what they are doing to support the Lord’s Taverners. I hope their considerable efforts will raise a significant sum of money for the charity.”Their efforts are the latest in a series of charitable endeavours from England’s cricketers since the start of the Covid-19 outbreak. Last month, Jos Buttler auctioned his World Cup-winning shirt for more than £65,000, while Ben Stokes this week ran his first half-marathon in a time of 1 hour and 39 minutes to raise funds for the NHS, after being inspired by three amateur cricketers who ran the full distance in their back gardens.
