Crystal Palace now advancing in talks to sign "talented" Guehi replacement

Following a reported fourth bid from Newcastle United, Crystal Palace are now advancing in talks to sign a possible replacement for Marc Guehi, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Crystal Palace transfer news

The Eagles already lost Michael Olise to Bayern Munich earlier in the window and have been in no mood to accept anything lower than their valuation for Guehi, reportedly rejecting Newcaste's latest offer worth £60m plus £5m in add-ons.

Palace co-owner Steve Parish recently spoke about the defender's future, saying: "We would like to keep hold of him. There is a price and a situation where we might consider it.

"Somebody [in another interview] said he is a superstar, so somebody has got to pay superstar money. Realistically, he is homegrown, 24 years old and a sensational talent – so somebody has to make it difficult for us. At the moment, it isn't.

"He will still be at Crystal Palace at the moment, but it's not impossible [that he goes]. He is certainly not making anybody's life difficult, his agents are decent people. It is a very good situation. Whether he is here or not will make no difference as to how he performs."

Crystal Palace could replace Olise by signing "one of the best wingers"

Palace still looking for offensive upgrades after Olise exit

ByConnor Holden Aug 18, 2024

Admitting that an exit is a possibility this summer for the right price, it's no surprise that the Eagles have lined up a potential replacement for the England international.

According to Romano, Crystal Palace are now advancing in talks to sign Maxence Lacroix from Wolfsburg this summer. The centre-back reportedly remains their priority target and manager Oliver Glasner considers Lacroix an "ideal choice" to replace Guehi should the Chelsea academy graduate depart in the next two weeks.

If those at Selhurst Park manage to get their asking price for Guehi, before adding a player of Lacroix's calibre, then it could be looked back on as a stroke of genius by the end of the campaign.

"Talented" Lacroix has already worked under Glasner

What would instantly hand Palace a major boost is the fact that Lacroix has worked under Glanser in the past during the manager's tenure at Wolfsburg. The defender played 36 games for the Austrian during their time together in the 2020/21 campaign and a reunion looks set to be on the cards if the cards fall into place this month.

Described as "talented" by former teammate Koen Casteels, Lacroix is just 24 years old and could be on the verge of entering his prime, making now the best time to complete a move to the Premier League.

Possibly stepping into the Palace team alongside the experienced Joachim Andersen, the Frenchman could quickly form quite the partnership to make Selhurst Park forget all about Guehi in the coming campaign. That said, there are still plenty of pieces to fall into place before a deal even nears completion.

Sam Robson takes his chance with opening-day 165 as Somerset let theirs slip

Next-highest score is 22 as Middlesex and Robson ride their luck

Matt Roller08-Apr-2021

Opening the batting on the first morning on the County Championship season is a mug’s game. In gloomy April conditions, someone is guaranteed the ignominy of being the first man out of the summer; striding out to bat wearing three layers in his first Lord’s innings for 18 months, Sam Robson must have feared that he would be the unfortunate victim. With four slips primed and ready, Craig Overton bowled full, aiming to nip an inswinger through Robson’s defence, but he threaded the ball through the vacant mid-off region for four with a compact drive. It was enough to settle any early-season nerves, and Robson was soon in his groove, clipping mercilessly through midwicket whenever Somerset’s seamers strayed onto his pads.He rode his luck at times. There is no good time to drop a catch in the slips, but there were few worse than this: with Robson on 23, James Hildreth put down a straightforward chance at first slip off Josh Davey; on 47, Lewis Gregory drew an outside edge, only for Overton to shell the opportunity. The bitter North London chill made this a sore day for fielders’ fingers – not least when Robson was in the mood to make them pay for their generosity.Particularly strong through the leg side, Robson waited patiently for half-volleys and short balls as Somerset’s seamers tried to find their early-season rhythm. He was happy to sit in and defend against Jack Leach, who got through 22 overs at an economy rate below two, but pulled, cut, whipped and drove fluently against the quicks.By mid-afternoon, he had become the first centurion of the Championship season, and his innings single-handedly dragged Middlesex to a competitive first-day score: he scored more than half of their runs – bringing up 10,000 first-class career runs in the process – and the second-highest individual total was Stevie Eskinazi’s 22. Jason Kerr, Somerset’s coach, said that it was “even stevens” at the close but after asking Middlesex to bowl first and cloud cover for most of the day, they will see this as an opportunity missed. For Robson, this innings served as a reminder of his talent, and in particular, his ability to cash in after making a start. The Bob Willis Trophy last summer was the first time since 2012 that he had failed to make a single hundred in a first-class season, but at 31, there is no reason why a strong run of scores in the first two months of this campaign should not put him back into England contention, nearly seven years after his last Test appearance. His own fortunes have mirrored the club’s in recent seasons, with his returns dipping somewhat in the years since an excellent 2016. He started that campaign in similar fashion, finishing the first day of the season unbeaten on 175; he could not repeat the feat this time, fending a catch to third slip against the second new ball, but will hope this innings augurs well for the months ahead.”I feel like my best years are ahead of me,” Robson said. “Last year was a funny year, not having much cricket, but I felt pretty good about my game in 2019 and I’m at an age now where hopefully I can put it all together with my experience, and keep the hunger for runs. I’d love to play for England again – as long as I’m playing first-class cricket, that’ll be one of my goals – but there’s a lot of work to be done.”You’re always nervous in a funny way – maybe a little bit more nervous this morning than usual, with everything that’s happened in the past year. This is the first time we’ve been at Lord’s [for a first-class match] for 18 months, and April cricket is always that sort of excitement with the first game of the year. As you get older, you know the vagaries of the game and just turn up and do your best – thankfully today things went my way.”Much as Somerset were left to rue their early profligacy in the slips, they fought they were back into the game admirably under the floodlights in the evening session. Middlesex had lost semi-regular wickets, rarely stringing together any particularly dominant partnerships, and Gregory struck three times with the second new ball to turn 254 for 5 into 281 for 8. Having spent three weeks in quarantine last month after contracting Covid-19 at the Pakistan Super League, Gregory’s pre-season preparations were far from ideal, but his control of line and length was typically impressive.Leach toiled away admirably, picking up the wicket of Robbie White – one of two taken by spinners across the country on the first day of the season – and managing to hold an end down throughout the afternoon session. Marchant de Lange, making his Somerset debut, leaked early runs – “trying too hard to make an impression,” Kerr suggested – but dragged things back, while Overton and Davey were both guilty of straying into Robson’s strong zones more often than they would have liked. As much as anything, Somerset’s first ambition this week is to get out of the red, having started the season on minus eight points following the ECB’s adjustment to their pitch penalty. Both sides had tricky selection dilemmas: Eddie Byrom was the batsman to miss out for Somerset, having made 117 on this ground in the Bob Willis Trophy final last September, while Middlesex left out James Harris and Steven Finn, while opting not to pick a specialist spinner. With the weather set to intervene, neither call is likely to be crucial, but Middlesex’s efforts with the ball on day two could define this game.

Personal terms done: Arsenal making last-gasp move to seal Merino repeat

After a long summer filled with international football, preseason friendlies, and constant rumours, there are now less than 48 hours to go until the transfer window slams shut – until it starts all over again in January, that is.

Arsenal fans had to endure a plodding start to the window, with little happening in terms of incomings or outgoings. However, as things stand today, Edu Gaspar and Co have overseen the departure of Emile Smith Rowe for up to £34m and the impending departures of Eddie Nketiah for up to £30m and Aaron Ramsdale for potentially £25m.

On the other side of things, the North Londoners have welcomed in Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna and Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad after what must have been one of the most drawn out sagas of the summer.

The good news for fans is that recent reports suggest that the club are set to bring in at least one more new player before the clock strikes 11pm tomorrow, and the latest star touted for a move to the Emirates could be a repeat of sorts of the Merino deal.

Arsenal transfer news

According Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Arsenal are interested in signing Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia before the window closes tomorrow night.

The report claims that with Ramsdale on his way to Southampton, the Gunners are set to step up their efforts to land the Spanish shot-stopper, who has supposedly already agreed on personal terms with the club.

To get this deal over the line, the report has revealed that the North Londoners will have to stump up €30m to trigger the release clause inserted in the 23-year-old's contract, which converts to about £25m.

It wouldn't be a cheap transfer to get done, but given Garcia's performances last season and Ramsdale's departure, it is worth pursuing and would be another move akin to Merino's this summer.

Why Garcia would be another Merino-esque masterclass

Okay, so before looking at a couple of the reasons Arsenal might be keen to secure Garcia's services, why would his move represent another Merino-style masterclass in the market? Well, there are two key reasons, both of which are pretty straightforward.

The first is simply the fact that the North Londoners are looking to bring in a highly-rated Spaniard from the country's top-flight this season, and not only that, but it appears that they'll both be moving for fees that do not seem too outrageous in the modern game, especially considering the reputations they have recently built up.

The second similarity is that both players achieved international glory with Spain this summer. The former Sociedad ace helped La Roja win their fourth European Championship in Germany, while the Espanyol ace was a key part of the country's gold medal-winning team at the Paris Olympics.

Now, away from some of the interesting parallels between the two stars, it looks like there is one key reason why Arteta is so keen on bringing the Sallent de Llobregat-born keeper to North London this summer: he is unreal at stopping crosses.

For example, according to FBref, which compares players in similar positions across the next best 14 competitions after Europe's top five leagues, the "assuring" shot-stopper, as dubbed by data analyst Ben Mattinson, sits in the top 1% of goalkeepers for crosses stopped percentage per 90.

He also sits in the top 1% for goals against, save percentage and clean sheet percentage and the top 13% for defensive actions outside the penalty area, also all per 90.

However, his ability to collect crosses appears to be the most important metric to the manager, as according to FBref, Raya also ranks in the top 1% of keepers for crosses stopped. However, that is in Europe's top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League.

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya

Ultimately, Garcia might not be a player who gets fans on their feet this summer, but his impressive record and stylistic similarities to the Gunners' current number one are certainly encouraging. Therefore, Edu and Co should do what they can to secure his services before the window slams shut.

Fawad Alam 108*, Imran Butt 91 lead way as Pakistan grind down Zimbabwe

Pakistan tighten grip on contest despite Babar Azam’s first golden duck in Tests

Danyal Rasool30-Apr-2021

Fawad Alam is thrilled after scoring his fourth Test century•Zimbabwe Cricket

This might not have been the best advert for Test cricket, but it is precisely days like these Fawad Alam has come to relish. With Pakistan needing to press home an advantage following an under-par Zimbabwe first-innings total, the left-hander struck his fourth Test hundred – he has never been out for less than three figures once he reaches 50 – stretching Pakistan’s lead past 175, with four wickets still in hand.Zimbabwe’s hapless bowlers tried to make the best of a bad situation, looking to claw a way out of the pit their batters had dug, and emerged from the day with a fair bit of credit. The run-scoring was never free, and breakthroughs fairly regular. Donald Tiripano was the pick of the bunch with three wickets; the removal of Babar Azam for his first golden duck a particular highlight. At that point, Zimbabwe might have felt a surge of optimism about the direction of this game, but it was perhaps fitting that Alam was the man to extinguish those hopes. No stranger to slow, attritional cricket when it seems no one might be watching, he dug in and began to ensure no bowler would settle. The routine of bowlers going through entire overs – spells, even – without needing to make an effort to be economical began to be undone. He used his feet to manipulate the field, work singles, and punish any loose delivery, especially when the spinners bowled a shorter length. He got off the mark the same way he got to his half-century, with a four off a spinner. The first was a smart cut past backward point, the latter an effortless flick back past the bowler that pierced mid-off and mid-on perfectly.Partners came and went either side of him, as they often tend to, but Fawad, as you’d expect, pushed ahead. Never in danger, never hassled, he moved past the half-century as if it hadn’t happened, more important goals and milestones on his mind. Towards the close of a day even the most ardent Test match enthusiasts might have found hard to remain glued to, he drove Tiripano back down the ground, a misfield gifting him the boundary that brought up this third century in in last four Tests.Related

Abid Ali fifty propels Pakistan reply to Zimbabwe's 176

The first session was an excruciatingly slow affair, with Pakistan trudging through 16 overs while adding just 13 to the overnight score, their intent conspicuous by its absence. Imran Butt, seven runs away from a half-century overnight, still hadn’t got to that mark. Azhar Ali’s arrival at the crease added some impetus, and towards the close of the session, the visitors finally looked like they were off and away.Zimbabwe began the day with eight maidens in 14 overs, Blessing Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava giving little away. Abid Ali and Butt appeared keen to take their time settling in, as they had the previous day, but ended up finding themselves in a bit of a bind, unable to up the ante as the overs trickled by. Any thoughts of punishing poor deliveries were put to one side, and when Tendai Chisoro’s left-arm spin was introduced, the batters retreated ever further into their shells. It appeared to have the opposite effect of the one Pakistan might have desired, with Abid losing his fluency, nicking off to first slip with one of the few drives he attempted. Brendan Taylor juggled with the catch but ended up holding on.Following the turgidity of the first session, the events of the second seemed positively slapdash. Pakistan raced along at more than three runs an over while Tiripano got himself on a hat-trick at one point. Butt fell nine runs short of a hundred and Azam lasted just one delivery.Zimbabwe enjoyed the better of the first half hour of the middle session. Azhar was undone by the surprise of extra bounce from Tiripano, with gully pouching a straightforward catch. Much more notably, Azam, in his first away Test as captain, fell to the most transparent of traps. Mid-on was brought up close as Tiripano bowled straight, inducing a drive which went to Roy Kaia, stationed there for that purpose. Zimbabwe had suddenly removed the two most prolific batters in the side.Butt at the other end chipped away more cautiously, eager to get to the three-figure mark he evidently had on his mind all session. It didn’t appear much would stop him, before Ngarave finally shaped one away that took his outside edge. It brought the left-armer his first Test wicket, denying Butt his first Test hundred in the process. The partnership that followed between Mohammad Rizwan and Alam was perhaps the one that conclusively wrenched the game away from Zimbabwe. The wicketkeeper continued his rich vein of form, helping to add 107 before falling five short of a half-century, Muzarabani sending his stumps cartwheeling. Faheem Ashraf missed out, too, but that only gave Hasan Ali the chance to have some fun at the bowlers’ expense. They might have been humoured from time to time, but in truth, Pakistan haven’t really left the home side with a chance.

Arsenal in contact over possible £63m signing as Edu makes 2025 head start

Arsenal are believed to already be in contact over a possible £63 million signing for next year, as Edu Gaspar and the club's recruitment team look to jump ahead of rival suitors.

Arsenal spend under £100 million on five summer signings

Mikel Arteta and Edu will be very happy with how the club conducted their business over the summer, with five major signings brought in for under £100 million, not to mention a few marquee sales made on top of this.

TalkSPORT pundit says £89m Chelsea star should follow Sterling to Arsenal

The ex-Man City star could make his debut against Tottenham this weekend.

David Raya signed from Brentford in a £27 million deal, which was a formality of his loan-with-obligation-to-buy move last year. After the Spaniard, Riccardo Calafiori swapped Bologna for the Premier League, with midfielder Mikel Merino also joining Arsenal later in the summer.

Arsenal managed two last-gasp deals at the eleventh hour, with both Neto and Raheem Sterling joining the north Londoners on deadline day. Sterling's capture comes as particularly interesting, and arguably their highest-profile move of the year.

The 29-year-old, who's scored 123 goals in the English top flight alone, provides both Premier League pedigree and trophy-winning experience – not to mention versatility.

It is believed Arteta is planning to use Sterling as a false-nine against Tottenham in the north London derby this weekend, with Arsenal looking short in midfield and Kai Havertz potentially dropping further back.

While the Gunners are suffering from a few injury worries and absentee concerns ahead of their trip to Spurs, they've arguably been unlucky in that regard so soon after the start of this new season.

Merino fractured his shoulder in his first ever Arsenal training session at London Colney, and there's been concerns surrounding Calafiori after he suffered a freak injury on international duty with Italy.

All-in-all, despite Arsenal's misfortune when it comes to their new arrivals, Edu and Arteta will still be ecstatic about the business conducted.

Arsenal already in contact over 2025 move for Benjamin Sesko

According to CaughtOffside, the Gunners are already planning for 2025, almost immediately after the closure of the last window. RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko was a widely reported transfer target for Arsenal over the summer, but the Slovenia striker decided to remain at his current club by signing a contract extension.

It is believed Arsenal have already been in contact over a 2025 move for Sesko, as Edu and co look to get ahead of rival suitors like Chelsea and Man United for his signature next summer – indicating they haven't given up hope of landing the 21-year-old.

Some reports claim that the forward's new deal includes a £63 million release clause, so a transfer is entirely possible, and CaughtOffside claim Arsenal are optimistic they can land Sesko this time round.
