Bowling coach B Arun, Wriddhiman Saha and Abhimanyu Easwaran identified as his close contacts, and asked to quarantine in London for ten days

After Rishabh Pant, four more members of the Indian contingent in England have been forced to quarantine for 10 days in London. This follows one of the support staff – training assistant/net bowler Dayanand Garani – returning a positive Covid-19 test on July 14. Apart from Garani, those in quarantine include the bowling coach B Arun, wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha and reserve opener Abhimanyu Easwaran, who were identified as his close contacts. The development comes as a big setback for India’s preparations for the five-Test series in England, which were already affected when Pant returned a positive test on July 8. In accordance with the protocols laid down by Public Health England, all those deemed to be in close contact with the person/s affected needed to be traced and isolated for ten days. It is believed that Arun, who is traveling with his family, Saha and Easwaran (both travelling alone), have all cleared the fresh round of tests conducted on Thursday.Who will keep wickets in India’s warm-up game before the England Tests?
In case Rishabh Pant fails to be fit for the three-day warm-up match against a select county eleven, starting from July 20 in Durham, it is likely that KL Rahul will end up keeping wicket.
The Indians have travelled to the UK with two glovemen in Pant and Saha. As per protocol, Pant will come out of isolation around July 18, which is 10 days after he first tested positive. Saha is ruled out because he has to stay in quarantine, in London, until July 24.
That leaves only Rahul, who has kept wicket for India in white-ball cricket. Rahul will also be looked as a potential opener after Shubman Gill picked an injury to the lower part of his left leg immediately after the World Test Championship final.
A BCCI release on Thursday evening said that Pant has not been staying at the team hotel, which suggests he is unlikely to have affected any other India players, and that he is “on his way to recovery”. Pant will be able to join the rest of the India squad after returning two negative RT-PCR tests. The same rule applies for the four others who are currently in quarantine. The BCCI release also said “to mitigate any further risks”, the Indian contingent will be administered lateral flow tests every day.Related

It is understood that not all members of the Indian squad were aware of Pant testing positive. Even BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who sent an email to all members of the Indian contingent on July 13 asking them to exercise all possible Covid-19 precautions, did not mention Pant’s positive result in that note, seen by ESPNcricinfo. In it, Shah stressed that while the Indian contingent had received the second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine recently, that did not “guarantee total immunity or resistance against the dreaded virus”.While the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Monday that the United Kingdom would be rolling back most of its Covid-19 restrictions from July 19, he cautioned that the Delta variant, which originated from India, was transmitting fast and accounts for virtually all the cases recently in the country.Shah too pointed to how the new Covid-19 variant had been “spreading rapidly”, and “we are not out of danger zone” yet. Citing the two bilateral series that were affected recently – the England vs Pakistan series and the Sri Lanka vs India series – because of the rising numbers, Shah wrote, “It is advisable the places of mass congregation, crowded shopping malls/stores and eateries and watering holes be avoided by you in the best interest of everyone.”On Thursday, the Indian contingent, which had dispersed the day after the World Test Championship final defeat to New Zealand, reassembled in London to travel to Durham, where it will spend the next two weeks getting ready for the first of five Tests, which starts at Trent Bridge on August 4. The Indians are scheduled to play a three-day tour game from July 20 at Chester-le-Street against a select county team. That match, Durham said on Wednesday in an official statement, would be “strictly” behind closed doors.
Crystal Palace’s only two wins this season have both come in the EFL Cup, beating Norwich 4-0 and QPR 2-1. Their Premier League season, however, has gotten off to a slower start, losing two and drawing two of their opening four fixtures.
This leaves Oliver Glasner’s side 16th in the Premier League after four games played, on two points, only one point from the relegation zone. However, it is very early days, and Glasner even pulled out a new formation in the second half against Leicester – their most recent Premier League game – deploying a 4-2-2-2 in the second half.
Eberechi Eze celebrates for Crystal Palace
Eberechi Eze and Daichi Kamada played as the attacking midfielders, with the ability to drift wide, but also come narrow, with Adam Wharton and Will Hughes behind them in the double pivot, leaving Jean-Philippe Mateta upfront alongside the Eagles’ new star, a certain Eddie Nketiah.
The striker has made an instant impression at Selhurst Park, moving on from pastures where he was perhaps underappreciated.
Eddie Nketiah at Arsenal
Nketiah came through the ranks at Arsenal, having been released by Chelsea in 2015. The young Englishman made 60 appearances across the various youth levels for the Gunners, scoring 46 goals, providing 11 assists, and totalling 4,349 minutes played.
The striker then spent some time on loan at Championship side, Leeds United, during the 2019/20 season, making 19 appearances for the club where he was rarely selected from the start. He was an impact sub, however, scoring five goals and supplying one assist across 667 minutes.
Nketiah went on to make 168 senior appearances for Arsenal in all competitions, scoring 38 goals and providing seven assists in his 7,000 minutes played. However, having struggled to sustain a starting spot in the Arsenal XI, Alan Brazil claimed the striker was “not good enough” for the Gunners.
A move to Palace certainly made sense then.
Nketiah's move to Palace
The 25-year-old striker will be keen to prove people wrong, securing a £30m move to Crystal Palace this summer, with a £25m initial fee, plus £5m worth of performance-related add-ons.
Nketiah has already opened his account for the Eagles, scoring in Palace’s 2-1 victory over QPR in the EFL Cup. The Englishman played 65 minutes, scoring one goal, having two shots on target, and making one key pass, in a successful evening for his side.
It would appear that Glasner moving into a 4-2-2-2 could be a stroke of genius with it allowing the boss to play with two strikers, something we haven’t seen regularly in a long time in the Premier League.
Mateta and Nketiah boast very contrasting profiles, which could make for a very effective partnership upfront. Here’s what the numbers tell us.

The 6 foot 3, bulky frame of Mateta, and the 5 foot 9, more slender frame of Nketiah, allow them to play off each other, doing different things for the team.
Mateta is more of a hold-up play striker, bringing others into play, winning his duels and aerial battles, before then attacking the box and having the decisive touch (0.66 goals per 90 last season).
Nketiah, on the other hand, can progress play via carrying and passing better than Mateta, take more touches in the penalty area due to his close control, and movement in the box, and offer more assists for the side, averaging 0.19 per 90, compared to the 0.17 of Mateta.
This duo could prove difficult to stop, with a brilliant blend of strength, movement, and finishing ability between them. Let’s see if Glasner takes the punt, and uses the 4-2-2-2 system more often. Based on how Nketiah has fared in his first two games, he should do. The new signing has only played 155 minutes of football for them but is immediately undroppable.

Australia’s strict Covid-19 restrictions raise prospect of senior players’ withdrawals
Andrew Miller28-Jul-2021Dom Bess, the Yorkshire and England offspinner, has said that the prospect of being selected for his maiden Ashes tour this winter is something he “would never, ever turn down”, amid concerns that a number of England’s senior players may be reluctant to commit to the tour due to Australia’s strict Covid-19 restrictions.England’s Test players are expected to seek clarity this week over the Ashes arrangements, with the series due to begin in Brisbane on December 8 before concluding six weeks later in Perth on January 18. With England’s multi-format players likely to head straight to Australia from the T20 World Cup in the UAE, the final of which takes place on November 14, it means that those players with young families, such as Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler, are likely to undergo several months of separation.Michael Vaughan, the former England captain, wrote in his column on Wednesday that in the event families were unable to join the touring party, Cricket Australia “either have to delay the Ashes by a year or the series will go ahead and be a farce with an under-strength England side”.However, Bess – who turned 24 last week, and who admitted earlier this season that he had begun to “hate cricket” after enduring a tough tour of India last winter – insisted that, at this early stage of his career, with no family commitments to distract him from his cricket ambitions, he wouldn’t hesitate to travel if selected.”It gives me goosebumps talking about it,” Bess said. “It is the pinnacle. Just watching the 2005 Ashes and then being at school and staying up all night to watch the 2010-11 when Cooky [Alastair Cook] scored hundred after hundred. That is pinnacle of the career – everyone thinks about it.”It is a tough ask,” he added. “Obviously I don’t know what will be happening about Australia and their regulations – but I think if your name was on the ticket and you were going to an Ashes series as a 24 year old, a young lad, you would never ever turn that down.”I think it would be very tough leaving family and supporters at home, but it is an Ashes series away from home – something you dream of, playing against Australia in Australia and looking to win there. Certainly you wouldn’t turn that down. I don’t think anyone who dreams of doing that would be able to turn that down.”Bess has been named in England’s 17-player squad for the first two Tests against India, at Trent Bridge and Lord’s next month, and while Jack Leach is likely to be England’s first-choice spinner at this stage of the series, he is feeling upbeat about making a return to the Test bubble, with the return of crowds likely to make a big difference to the team environment, compared to the behind-closed-doors experience in 2020.Dom Bess coaching at Haydn Road Community Cricket Club•LV= Insurance/#Funds4Runs
“It is so good to have fans back in the ground,” he said. “You look at these Hundred games, it’s been amazing. But with bubbles, it was very taxing by the end of it. At the start of last summer we went to Southampton, up to Manchester, back to Southampton … we didn’t see anyone, no one in the crowd, empty stadiums, then we had a bit of a break, then straight to Sri Lanka, then India.”Obviously, I am only one of the Test specialists, but you look at the one-day and T20 guys, and you can understand why people get burnt out and mentally fatigued, and how much it has an impact on your actual game.”That was something I had to learn to try and deal with during India,” he added. “I was mentally tired and physically tired by the end of it, because you’d play or not play, go back to your room, do nothing, then next day get the bus to the ground, do your work, go back to the hotel … day in, day out.Related

“It will be a bit easier being at home, knowing you are in England, knowing you are two or three hours away from family. But most importantly, it will be so good to see the fans back in. I was there at [Edgbaston] when England played Pakistan, and to see the place thumping was really good.”I think it will be different – we have learned how to cope with it and, fingers crossed, we are on the way out of it in terms of strict bubbles. You have to cope and find some strategies.”Earlier in the summer, Buttler admitted that winning the Ashes “would be a huge challenge, especially when you are accustomed to being able to take your family”, while Kevin Pietersen, another former England captain, suggested that it would be “utter madness” for players to be separated from their families for four months.LV= Insurance ‘In With Heart’ Tour showcases #Funds4Runs, a £1m joint initiative between the ECB and LV= Insurance to support grassroots cricket recover and rebuild following the pandemic.

Todo time precisa de bons jogadores. Mas também estamos atentos ao nosso elenco. Queremos manter boa parte dele, especialmente as peças fundamentais – adiantou o dirigente.
With replacing Callum Wilson on the agenda in transfer windows to come, Eddie Howe now personally wants Newcastle United to sign one star striker who’s set to become a free agent in 2025, according to reports.
Newcastle transfer news
The Magpies must ensure that they manage to put this summer behind them once and for all in 2025, having endured a disastrous few months in pursuit of their targets. The biggest name mentioned was of course Marc Guehi, but as Newcastle’s offer increased to sign the central defender, so did Crystal Palace’s valuation it seems, before the Eagles eventually priced their Premier League rivals out of a move.
Mitchell planning huge double contract signing for £9m-a-year Newcastle duo
They would be among the highest paid players at the club.
ByBen Browning Sep 21, 2024
Sporting director Paul Mitchell is well aware of the disappointment surrounding Newcastle’s transfer window too, having told the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, as relayed by The Athletic: “Eddie was very clear and it’s not up to me after seven weeks to say, ‘We’ll do this and that’, because I’m in a supporting role. Were there options? Of course there were, as that’s the responsibility of the department and Newcastle.
“That’s why we ended up where we did. It was that player or he felt he was comfortable with the quality we have. You can be on multiple deals at any one time, the focus doesn’t have to be that narrow. We probably were too narrow but, coming in mid-July, it’s not my strategy to control, it’s my strategy to support.”
Despite seemingly adding Howe to the blame for the Magpies’ failed window, reports suggest that the manager could still have a say on future incomings. According to GiveMeSport, Howe now personally wants Newcastle to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin on a free deal if he fails to agree a new Everton contract before next summer.
The England international has reportedly been handed one last chance to put pen to paper at Everton as they desperately look to avoid losing their star striker in a free deal, but it remains to be seen whether he does, indeed, opt to sign a fresh contract.
"Excellent" Calvert-Lewin would provide Isak cover
Of course, as things stand, Newcastle are also set to lose a striker on a free deal next summer with Wilson’s current contract coming to an end. The former Bournemouth star looks set to depart amid ongoing injury struggles which often leave those in Tyneside without adequate cover for Alexander Isak. That’s where Calvert-Lewin can come in, however.
Although arguably not consistent enough to compete with Isak, Calvert-Lewin ticks the box for Premier League experience and would offer Howe a more physical alternative when Newcastle are in desperate need of a plan B. Earning a reported £100,000-a-week, however, it must be said that the Englishman would be an expensive backup.
Sean Dyche will be a frustrated figure if Calvert-Lewin does head for the exit door next summer, having told BBC Sport after his forward’s performance in a shock Merseyside derby victory over Liverpool last season: “I thought he was excellent. His physical performance was outstanding.
“This season has not been too bad on the injury front,” he said. “But it shows it does take time mentally and physically to clear your mind of that and start to play freely again.”
