Uncapped fast bowler Mohammad Saleem has made it to Afghanistan’s 15-player squad for the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia in October-November. He is among three call-ups for the tournament, the others being legspinner Qais Ahmad and batter Darwish Rasooli.Saleem had finished joint-sixth in the Shpageeza Cricket League, Afghanistan’s domestic T20 tournament, with 11 wickets for Boost Defenders at an impressive economy rate of 6.63. Qais, a globe-trotting T20 specialist, had topped the wicket-takers’ list in that tournament, with 14 wickets in eight outings at an economy of 6.35. Qais has plied his trade in Australia’s Big Bash League, the Caribbean Premier League, the Lanka Premier League and England’s T20 Blast. Most recently, he was signed by Gulf Giants for the inaugural edition of the International League T20 to be played in the UAE next January.Rasooli had played only two games for Amo Sharks in the Shpageeza Cricket League, but in those two he smacked 41 not out off 19 and 51 off 30.While Saleem is yet to debut in international cricket, Qais and Rasooli have played a handful of games for Afghanistan. Qais has debuted across all three formats, but his last game for Afghanistan was on the tour of Bangladesh in March. The last of Rasooli’s four T20Is was on the tour of Zimbabwe in June.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Afghanistan’s chief selector Noor Malikzai said of the new faces: “Fortunately Darwish Rasooli has recovered from injury – a broken finger – and we are happy to have him available for the T20 World Cup. He has demonstrated good glimpses of [what he can do] in the previously held Shpageeza Cricket League 2022, and offers an additional batting option to our middle order.”Since the Australian conditions are fast-bowling friendly, so we have added [Mohammad] Saleem, a tall right-arm quick, to add further impetus to our bowling department.”Afghanistan’s previous T20I assignment was the Asia Cup in the UAE, where they impressed by thumping eventual champions Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the first round before falling narrowly short of upsetting Pakistan in a dramatic Super 4s game. From the squad that played that tournament, Samiullah Shinwari, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Karim Janat, Noor Ahmad and Afsar Zazai miss out. Zazai is one of four reserves named for the T20 World Cup, alongside Sharafuddin Ashraf, Gulbadin Naib and Rahmat Shah.Afghanistan have already made it to the main round of the T20 World Cup, where they are grouped alongside hosts Australia, England, New Zealand and two yet-to-be-determined qualifiers. They kick off their tournament against England in Perth on October 22. The top two teams from each of the two groups will contest the semi-finals, before the final on November 13.T20 World Cup squad: Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Najibullah Zadran, Qais Ahmad, Hazratullah Zazai, Usman Ghani, Mohammad Nabi (capt), Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Ibrahim Zadran, Darwish Rasooli, Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Saleem, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Fareed Ahmad, Naveen-ul-Haq, Rashid Khan

After Jota: Celtic could sign their own "young Sadio Mane" in £10m star

Celtic have finally managed to complete their first signing of the January transfer window with the arrival of Jota on a permanent deal from Ligue 1 side Rennes.

The Hoops have signed the Portuguese forward for a reported fee of £8m, 18 months after his move to Al-Ittihad from Parkhead, whilst Kyogo has moved the other way in a £10m deal.

Jota may not be the only player to arrive this month, though, as the club are also reportedly interested in a move for Brondby striker Mathias Kvistgaarden, who is valued at £10m by the Danish side.

As well as bringing in players like the Portuguese winger and the Danish marksman, Celtic could also look at starlets who could come in with a view to the future, like Bazoumana Toure.

Celtic's interest in Bazoumana Toure

Earlier this month, The Scottish Sun reported on a claim from the Swedish media that the Hoops are interested in the Hammarby winger and have sent scouts to watch the young star in action this season.

It was claimed that the Swedish outfit have placed a price tag of £10m over the 18-year-old gem’s head and it remains to be seen whether or not the Scottish Premiership giants are prepared to pay that kind of money for him.

Celtic managerBrendanRodgerscelebrates after winning the League Cup

Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion were also said to be keen on the teenage sensation, which suggests that the Bhoys could face some stiff competition for the winger’s signature before the end of the January transfer window.

Celtic, however, should push to win the race for his services, whether that is this month or in the summer, as Toure could come in as a player with big potential for Brendan Rodgers.

Why Celtic should sign Bazoumana Toure

Earlier this month, journalist Bence Bocsak described the teenager as an “exciting” talent who reminds him of a “young Sadio Mane”, which is incredibly high praise given what the Senegal international achieved in his career in England.

The left winger scored 120 goals in 269 matches for Liverpool in all competitions and won the Premier League and the Champions League during his time at Anfield under Jurgen Klopp.

The former Southampton forward proved himself to be a reliable goalscorer over the course of a number of years in the English top-flight as a dynamic, quick, attacker who predominantly played on the left flank.

Like Mane, Toure predominantly plays on the left wing for Hammarby and uses his speed and technical quality to make a big impact at the top end of the pitch, although the big difference between them is that the 18-year-old ace is a left-footed star.

As you can see in the table above, the Ivorian wizard caught the eye in his first season of senior football with Hammarby in the 2024 Allsvenskan.

A return of 15 goals and ‘big chances’ created in 20 league starts at the age of 18 is an exceptional return. For context on how impressive that is for his age, no teenager has played more than one minute of Premiership action for Celtic this season.

Toure is an exciting young talent with big potential as a scorer and a creator of goals on the left flank and that is why Rodgers could bring him in as his own ‘young Sadio Mane’, with time ahead of him to develop into a first-team star for the Hoops in the future.

ICC invites bids for media rights in Australia, USA, Caribbean, Canada

Second phase in ICC’s global media-rights process, after lucrative deal secured for Indian market in August

The ICC has invited bids for media rights to global cricketing events over the next four (or eight) years for the Australian, US, Caribbean and Canadian markets. This is the second phase in the ICC’s media rights process, after sealing a deal for the Indian market last month for an undisclosed sum. That winning bid, thought to be in the region of just over US$ 3 billion, came from Disney Star* and covers both television and digital rights to men’s and women’s global tournaments between 2024 and 2027. Days after the winning bid was announced, Disney Star announced it would in turn be licensing part of the rights to Zee Entertainment Enterprises in another landmark deal.Related

Like the Indian deal, this new ITT (Invitation to Tender) allows players to bid separately for the rights to men’s and women’s tournaments. But unlike the Indian deal, though, television and digital rights will not be up for grabs separately. The bids must be made for four or eight years for men’s events, starting from 2024, and four years for women’s events. There are 16 men’s events lined up over the eight years starting from 2024, and six women’s events between 2024 and 2027.ICC chief executive Geoff Allardice said the US market, in particular, has a lot of potential for growth: “The USA is one of the ICC’s targeted growth markets, and with 30 million cricket fans already enjoying the sport there, a World Cup scheduled to be co-hosted in that country in 2024 and our exciting ambition for inclusion in the 2028 Olympic Games, there couldn’t be a better time for cricket to find a broadcast partner to help grow the game across the region.”ESPNcricinfo understands the bids need to be submitted by November 18 for Australia and November 7 for the other markets, but deadlines may be tweaked if needed. The ICC will invite bids for other markets across the globe in due course. It is expected to finalise deals for all markets by December this year.

Man Utd have set their sights on signing "world-class" 5x league champion

A “world-class” player who has matched Amad Diallo this season is seen as a reported summer transfer target for Manchester United, according to a new report.

Latest Man Utd news

The Red Devils made it into the fifth round of the FA Cup on Friday evening courtesy of a dramatic late victory over Leicester City at Old Trafford.

United’s 2-1 win may not have been the most convincing performance of the season, but Harry Maguire’s last-gasp winner ensured that the reigning cup holders remain in the competition, meaning Ruben Amorim still has a chance of winning domestic silverware in his first season in charge.

In terms of possible incoming transfers for the Red Devils, RB Leipzig attacking midfielder Xavi Simons has been linked with a summer switch to the club. The Dutchman moved permanently from Paris Saint-Germain in the January window, but his new club are seemingly looking to move him on swiftly, cashing in on him in the process.

A new striker could also be high on United’s agenda in the summer, due to Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee struggling this season, and Crystal Palace marksman Jean-Philippe Mateta has been rumoured as an option to come in and bolster Amorim’s squad.

Man Utd eyeing move for "world-class" star

According to a report from Spain, Manchester United have Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane on their list of summer targets, seeing him as their most high-profile option to bring in.

Jonathan David, Jonathan Tah, Angel Gomes and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are the other players mentioned in the report, as they continue to eye up reinforcements at the end of the season.

12 players who could become free agents in summer 2025

These players are entering the final months of their contracts, meaning they could be on the move very soon…

ByRoss Kilvington May 27, 2025

Sane is a fantastic winger when he is fit and firing, proving to be an influential figure during his Manchester City days, winning two Premier League titles. He has since won a further three league titles at Bayern, while football talent scout Jacek Kulig once described him as a “world-class” footballer:

This season, Sane has matched Diallo for goals, with the pair both scoring six times in the league, and he has also chipped in with two assists in the German Bundesliga.

The Germany international is now 29 years of age and would demand big wages, so that is the main thing working against United making a move for him.

There is no guarantee that Sane’s best years are ahead of him, and Sir Jim Ratcliffe now needs to adopt an approach where the Red Devils are signing players with potential over ageing figures who are big names.

That said, Sane could be available on a free transfer, with his current Bayern deal expiring once this season is done and dusted, and plenty of United supporters may not be moaning at the prospect of seeing him at Old Trafford next season.

Stephen Fleming: Pakistan made a 'massive mistake' in the death overs

Pakistan lost four wickets and scored only 18 runs in the last four overs of the T20 World Cup final

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Nov-20223:33

Fleming: Pakistan made ‘massive mistake’ in last four overs

Pakistan were 119 for 4 after 16 overs in the T20 World Cup final against England at the MCG but managed to score only 18 for the loss of four wickets in the last four overs, and their approach at the death was a “massive mistake” according to former New Zealand captain and current Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming.”[Pakistan were] 121 [119] for 4 in 16 overs. There’s enough in that wicket to suggest that a 165-score is going to be a real good challenge,” Fleming said on ESPNcricinfo’s T20 Time Out show after the first innings. “There was inconsistent bounce, there was a little bit of movement on offer and it was turning.”So as a unit, you should be saying that ‘we’ve got some artillery here, we know that we just need to get a score on the board and we will be competitive’. The fact that the last four overs went for 16 [18] runs, I think that’s a massive mistake.””Even at 10 [runs per over], you get to 161 and if you have one good over, you get to 165 which I think is more than competitive given what we have seen,” Fleming said. “Especially given the turn, which was unexpected, and the little bit that’s on offer for probably a quicker and more skilful pace attack. So yeah, there was a lot going on up to that point, but Pakistan missed a massive trick.”Fleming said that Pakistan did not read the ground dimensions and conditions well. “Teams often go to the MCG and they think traditionally, we’ll get to 16 overs and then we’ll whack ourselves 15 runs an over and we’ll get a great score. The MCG is not that ground. If there’s any research that should have been done is on how to finish off an innings.”Shadab Khan was one of several batters caught in the deep•Getty Images

Pakistan’s last three recognised batters – Shan Masood, Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz – were all caught attempting the big hits at the MCG. “The ones and twos that were so good all the way through the innings, they disappeared and all of a sudden they were just trying to hit it out of the ground over 85 metre boundaries,” Fleming said. “And that just doesn’t work. Livingstone’s there, just picking it off. Sorry, I reckon it just wasn’t smart and it could cost them, the score of 165 was easily there.”Former Australia allrounder Tom Moody said that Masood, who scored 38 off 28 in the final, laid down the right template with his running between the wickets.”We saw Shan Masood show the way to how to score runs at the MCG. His running between the wickets was superb, the twos that he ran, the pressure he put on the outfield, that didn’t really need to change,” Moody said, adding that Babar Azam’s dismissal was the turning point in Pakistan’s innings.”I think it was in the 12th over Babar was dismissed, and from then onwards, it just went south where they just seemed to lose sight of how to accumulate runs and get to that 160-165 that Flem’s [Fleming] talking about,” Moody said. “In a total of 120 balls, if you’re scoring six fours and two sixes [Pakistan scored eight fours and two sixes], I think that shows more than anything that no one else really got in on that surface to be able to in those last four overs pick off a few boundaries.”It was a pretty disappointing finish from Pakistan, they should be more than what they got and it’s really down to some poor management with their batting in the back 10 overs.”Former India captain and head coach Anil Kumble said Masood’s dismissal put the pressure back on Pakistan. “I think, like Flem [Fleming] mentioned, they were probably thinking boundaries and sixes and that’s what you are sort of tuned to in the last four overs. I think Shan Masood getting out at that time certainly put the pressure back on Pakistan, because he was someone who looked comfortable and he was in control of his scoring,” Kumble said.”And that’s something I didn’t see in even Babar, even though Babar batted well till he got out. Shan Masood looked in better control of the proceedings, in terms of how he wanted to manoeuvre the bowling.”That’s something, once he got out, it put pressure back on Pakistan batters and they only looked for boundaries which never came.”From 119 for 4, Pakistan finished on 137 for 8 in 20 overs – it was their lowest total batting first in this T20 World Cup.

Man Utd make verbal contract offer to "monster" with £62m release clause

Manchester United have now made contact to offer a big salary to a “monster” forward in the summer, according to a new report.

Amorim reacts to Man Utd defeat at Spurs

The Red Devils were unable to overcome a 13th-minute goal from James Maddison on Sunday afternoon, as they were beaten 1-0 by Tottenham Hotspur. It was another frustrating and bitterly disappointing day for United and Ruben Amorim, who said his job “is so hard” as he deals with an out-of-form squad and an injury list that now has 12 players on it.

“I have a lot of problems,” Amorim told Sky Sports, via BBC Sport. “My job is so hard, but I am here to continue my job to the next week with my beliefs, and I will try to win again.”

The former Sporting boss went on to add that he is not worried about himself, he is focusing on his players and improving the team: “I am not worried. I understand our fans and what the media think about it. I hate to lose; that feeling is the worst.

Man Utd offer contract to Victor Osimhen

One aspect that continues to let United down week in and week out is lack of goals in the team, but that is something that INEOS are looking to address. According to Turkish journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu, relayed by Caught Offside, Man United have tabled a verbal contract offer to Victor Osimhen, as they look to sign him in the summer from Napoli.

Victor Osimhen celebrates for Victor Osimhen.

The Nigeria international looks set to leave the Italian side this summer on a permanent basis after his season-long loan spell at Galatasaray. As well as United offering a contract, Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in the forward and have offered Osimhen a similar deal.

Both clubs are ready to trigger his €75 million release clause, which is roughly £62 million, but at this stage Osimhen hasn’t given an answer to either to press ahead and speak to his club.

The 26-year-old was linked with a move to Chelsea or Saudi Arabia back in the summer, but a deal didn’t work out, and instead of being frozen out by Napoli, Osimhen decided to join Galatasaray on loan. The forward, who has been described as a “monster” by data analyst Ben Mattinson, has scored 12 goals in 17 Süper Lig games as well as being on form in the Europa League.

For United, signing a new striker in the summer must be a top priority for Amorim and INEOS. Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have both struggled to make an impact in front of goal, and, given Hojlund has not scored in the Premier League for over 10 games now, he is someone who the Red Devils could look to cash in on so they can bring in a player like Osimhen.

United need to move players on in the summer to raise funds, and despite his struggles, Hojlund could be someone who brings in a decent amount of money, given his age, and that could help United pay the £62 million release clause of Osimhen.
