Boehly has hit the jackpot on "special" Chelsea star worth more than Samu

Chelsea were riding the crest of a wave at the beginning of Enzo Maresca’s tenure – but the trials and tribulations of the season have since affected this talented squad.

Seventh in the Premier League, the Blues have been beset by a deluge of injury issues over the past month that has limited Maresca’s options considerably, especially at the front of the ship.

Chelsea players warming up

There’s plenty of promise about this Stamford Bridge side, however, in spite of the money spent over the past several years, Todd Boehly and Co are still met with the need to sign some top-class talent across a range of areas.

Where Chelsea need to strengthen in the summer

Chelsea’s head coach confirmed in the wake of his side’s Premier League defeat at Villa Park on Saturday evening that Filip Jorgensen remains ahead of Robert Sanchez in the pecking order between the sticks – des[ite spilling Marco Asensio’s late effort to condemn the Londoners to defeat.

With Sanchez also flattering to deceive, it’s possible that bringing a new shot-stopper to the Bridge will be a chief priority for the Chelsea transfer team, though the need for reinforcements stretches into other areas.

Indeed, the Blues may need to dip back into the defensive market with Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile struggling for fitness and Levi Colwill struggling for form.

According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea are tussling with Arsenal and Bayern Munich for Sporting Lisbon centre-half Ousmane Diomande, regarded as one of the most exciting young defenders in the business.

There’s also the matter of the frontline. With Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu (who is only 18) both sidelined for the foreseeable, Chelsea may need to sign a new striker this summer.

However, any move they make must not jeopardise Jackson’s place in the team. He’s made progress this term, and could yet reach the height of his lofty potential.

Why Chelsea signed Nicolas Jackson

Jackson is currently out of action with a muscular injury and is reportedly not expected back on the grass until after the March international break.

Chelsea'sNicolasJacksonreacts after sustaining an injury

However, he’s made considerable progress during his time at Stamford Bridge so far and may well find that his brightest days in Chelsea colours lay ahead of him.

In July 2023, Chelsea welcomed Jackson to the Premier League from Villarreal after activating his £32m release clause. The Senegal international joined the cause on an eight-year contract and has ebbed and flowed over almost two years in the English capital.

With 23 goals and ten assists across 58 appearances in the Premier League, Jackson has left something to be desired but has still proven himself through an athletic and powerful style and discernible improvements in front of goal.

The 23-year-old arrived for a sizeable figure but he’s already skyrocketed in market value. It’s early days yet, but Chelsea might just have hit the jackpot with this dynamic centre-forward.

What Nicolas Jackson is valued at in 2025

Jackson started his second campaign in Chelsea colours with a bang – but the forward did spin out of form across the winter period, going eight matches without a goal in the Premier League before picking up a hamstring injury.

However, there are still promising signs in regard to his clinical edge, missing fewer big chances this term while increasing his shots-per-game average.

For sure, Jackson could be more clinical in front of goal, but he’s made headway, no doubt. In fact, he’s made so much progress that CIES Football Observatory – the world leader in the scientific evaluation of player values – have recorded Jackson to have a current market value of £87m, which equates to a 171% uptick.

More curiously, this is higher than FC Porto striker Samu Aghehowa, who joined the Portuguese giants from Atletico Madrid last summer in a deal worth just £13m.

FC Porto's SamuOmorodioncelebrates scoring their first goal

Sorry for the reminder. But given that Chelsea had a €40m (£34m) deal in place just weeks earlier, it stings a little for those of a Blues persuasion, not least because the robust striker has hit the ground running and then some at his new outfit. In short, he’d be perfect in Maresca’s side.

The 20-year-old has scored 19 goals from 30 matches this season – including a brace against Manchester United in the Europa League – with talent scout Jacek Kulig claiming that he’s “on the path to achieving something special at Porto.”

Well, journalist Rahman Osman has also hailed Jackson as a “truly special” talent, for the striker ranks among the top 13% of positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions and the top 12% for both progressive carries and successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref, perfectly illustrating his energetic threat.

This multifacetedness bespeaks Jackson’s quality. CIES, after all, records that Samu has seen his stock to a whopping £60m. This is impressive, but he’s not on Jackson’s level.

With Nkunku’s long-term future perhaps away from west London, it feels likely that BlueCo will green-light a summer transfer plan for a new number nine.

However, in Jackson, Maresca has one of the most talented young strikers in Europe. Chelsea must be careful not to welcome someone to the detriment of the Senegalese’s continual development.

In any case, Chelsea are looking to enter a higher phase of European competition next season and Jackson might benefit from the competition with another talented striker.

If he uses such an eventuality to spur on and continue to make gains, he might just prove to hit that lofty potential that convinced Chelsea to make their move for a decent fee back in 2023.

Hales will return to his long-term club on the back of T20 World Cup success and Rossouw has had an impressive season in the format. Both, however, will only be around until early January.Related

Explainer – Why David Warner withdrew the appeal against his lifetime captaincy ban

Tanveer Sangha hoping for Sydney Thunder BBL return

Last season: KnockoutThunder reached the finals on the back of a strong mid-season run where they won six games on the bounce including a 129-run hammering of Melbourne Renegades where Daniel Sams hit an astonishing 98 off 44 balls. But they fell short against Adelaide Strikers where they had got the equation down to 39 off 23 balls then 14 off the last over which Harry Conway was able to defend. Jason Sangha led the run-scoring with 445 at 49.44 and a strike-rate of 132.04 and Sams was the leading wicket-taker with 19 although Tanveer Sangha and Gurinder Sandhu were the most consistent performers.International impactThe return of David Warner to the BBL was the big off-season story, but the window for his availability after the South Africa series may shrink with the squad due to depart for India in late January. Still, when he does suit up in green it will be one of the most anticipated moments of the tournament – especially the derby clash with Steven Smith’s Sydney Sixers. Beyond that, and the overseas players, Thunder are unlikely to be hit by international call-ups as they have no one else in the Test set-up with Usman Khawaja having moved to Brisbane Heat.Key playerDaniel Sams is another player who might feel he has a part to play in the future of Australia’s T20 side after being on the fringes in recent seasons. For Thunder, he will have a big role to play with bat and ball, although with the later bringing down his economy rate a touch may help his international ambitions. In terms of the batting, it will be interesting to see how and where he is used. As he showed last season with that 98 he has the potential to be destructive, although that innings was an outlier in the campaign. But since then he has produced equally powerful innings in the T20 Blast (71 off 24 balls) and the Hundred (55 off 25 balls).Young player to watchTanveer Sangha’s stress fracture is a blow to their bowling attack, but Ollie Davies caused instant excitement when he struck two quickfire innings at the start of his BBL career in late 2020, but things have been tougher since then making 74 in 11 innings. The early stages of this season were hindered as he came back from a hip injury but in November in made 115 off 106 balls playing for the combined NSW/ACT XI against West Indies in Canberra.

Rehan Ahmed to make Test debut in Karachi

Teenage legspinner will become England’s youngest men’s debutant

Rehan Ahmed will become England men’s youngest Test debutant after being named in the XI for Karachi*. Ahmed comes in as one of two changes, alongside the returning Ben Foakes, as England look to complete a 3-0 series sweep.Ahmed, the 18-year-old legspinning allrounder, was added to the squad during the pre-tour camp in Abu Dhabi. He has not been directly involved in the first two Tests but has been a regular substitute fielder, in particular in the Rawalpindi Test when Liam Livingstone suffered a tour-ending knee injury.Ahmed came close to the XI for that first Test when left-arm spinner Jack Leach’s participation was thrown into doubt after he was struck down by a virus that infected half the squad. Leach pulled through and, along with the offspin of Joe Root and Will Jacks, has provided the slow-bowling options on two flat pitches.Livingstone’s injury, however, means that Ahmed is the only wristspinner in the squad. His work in the nets continued at Karachi’s National Stadium on Thursday, when he and the other alternates underwent a training session while those who played a part in the series-sealing 26-run win in Multan were given the day off to rest or play golf.Related

Stokes’ confirmed England’s team a day out from the final Test, with Ahmed and Foakes replacing Will Jacks and the rested James Anderson. Foakes’ return behind the stumps will allow Ollie Pope to focus on batting at No. 3.Speaking at the team hotel in Thursday, Stokes insisted that handing Ahmed his first cap would be a decision based on ability rather than an act of charity. His selection at the age in of 18 years and 126 days means he will surpass the long-standing record held by Brian Close (18 years and 149 days) as England’s youngest male Test player.”We’ve been thinking about it,” Stokes said. “We can’t go into too much detail until me and Baz [Brendon McCullum] have had a look at the wicket.”When we spoke about having Rehan into the squad, it was more than just bringing him in and integrating him into the squad. We did speak about us having no issues with selecting him if we felt it was the right option. I don’t think this is a case of, if he was to play, of giving caps away. We picked him in the squad not just because of his talent, but because we thought it would be a good opportunity to play if we thought it was necessary.”A maiden international cap ends a breakthrough year on a high for Ahmed. It began with 12 wickets during the Under-19 World Cup in February as England finished runners-up to India. A first-class debut in Division Two of the County Championship came in May, and he ended the summer with a maiden five-wicket haul and century against Derbyshire. In between whiles, he training alongside England’s white-ball squads during their series with India and South Africa, and played five matches for Southern Brave in the Hundred.Though Ahmed was not originally in the 15-man squad selected for this first series back in Pakistan since 2005, but his addition was not as last-minute as it seemed. The prospect had been floated in the initial selection meeting with two primary takeaways: the importance of insulating Ahmed from outside pressure, particularly from the media, and that head coach McCullum wanted to see and work with Ahmed first before taking him on tour. That opportunity came during the training camp, and McCullum was suitably impressed by both Ahmed’s ability and mentality. Though he did not enjoy the best time with the ball in the England versus England Lions warm-up match, conceding 73 in eight wicketless overs, he provided a snapshot of his pluck with the bat, striking 26 from 10 deliveries for the Lions. He has continued to make an impression over the last few weeks. And it was instructive that, when asked of what he has made of the youngster, Stokes admitted he isn’t sure which of Ahmed’s two suits is his strongest.Ahmed was an integral member of the England team that reached the Under-19 World Cup final this year•ICC via Getty

“I’m struggling to work out what he is, whether he’s a batter or a legspinner, which is I guess good, because it shows how much talent he’s got. We got snippets of what he can do with the bat in that warm-up game briefly.”But having a wrist-spinner is always exciting, especially for England, but it’s not getting too carried away with the potential that he has, because he is only young, and you’ve still got to nurture talent, even how exciting it is.”It is worth noting that Ahmed will be the first player from a minority background selected under Stokes’ captaincy. All nine XIs selected previously have been exclusively white.English cricket is currently enduring a period of introspection around race, with Azeem Rafiq saying the sport is in denial about racism during his DCMS committee hearing on Tuesday. The new year will see the delayed Cricket Discipline Commission hearing into allegations of racism against Rafiq’s former county, Yorkshire, along with recommendations to the ECB from the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC) to improve equality around race, gender and class.A lack of diversity around the England team is primarily a reflection of issues further down the chain. When asked about the issue, Stokes said he believed cricket was an inclusive sport but acknowledged Ahmed could inspire future generations.”Whenever I have been asked about this, I have always felt cricket is a very inclusive sport,” he said. “Certainly, in my time in the England team you have been selected on your skills as a cricketer first and foremost. That still should be the way going forward regardless of your beliefs or what you look like or anything like that. If you’re good enough to represent this country, you’re going to get picked.”Players especially like Rehan, he could be an unbelievable example to set to younger kids who want to come up. They may have maybe heard about what’s happened in cricket recently [but] he can be seen an example of ‘no, we’ve got this 18-year-old hopefully a potential superstar, why can’t I be that?’ But English cricket to me has always been if you’re good enough, you’re going to get selected and I don’t see it being any different going forward.”*December 16, 08.15 GMT – This story was updated with confirmation of Ahmed’s debut

0 duels won: McKenna must axe Ipswich dud who can’t cut it in the PL

Ipswich Town’s woes on their own patch continue on as Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur ran out resounding 4-1 victors over the dejected Tractor Boys on Saturday.

Indeed, Kieran McKenna’s men have only won one Premier League clash all season long at Portman Road, with this defeat, in particular, pushing them deeper into the relegation mire off the back of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ big win on their travels to AFC Bournemouth.

Now, the Suffolk underdogs are five points off Wolves who occupy that golden 17th spot in the division, but there were some positives for McKenna to hold onto come full-time, despite the grim reality of another home loss.

Ipswich's biggest positives vs Spurs

Ipswich actually finished the contest with more shots on goal – with 17 to Spurs’ ten – alongside offering up more big chances at a slightly heftier three to the away side’s one, but all of that would ultimately amount to nothing.

Still, the likes of Omari Hutchinson would trudge off the pitch at the end pleased with their efforts, as the ex-Chelsea man got his side back into the contest with a beautifully executed strike deep into the hectic first 45 minutes.

Away from that moment of ecstasy, Hutchinson also amassed three key passes in the game to try and gift his side more of a way into the clash before an unfortunate late collapse handed Spurs all three points.

Jack Clarke stood out down the left flank too, with his assist providing Hutchinson the chance to beat Guglielmo Vicario, whilst Liam Delap was his usual energetic self minus a finish rippling the back of the net.

But, away from those lively performers up top, the Tractor Boys defence did look porous throughout, especially down the left-hand side of the pitch when Heung-min Son was twisting and turning this shaky Ipswich body for fun.

Performance in Numbers

Want data and stats? Football FanCast's Performance in Numbers series provides you with the latest match analysis from across Europe.

Ipswich's biggest underperformer vs Spurs

Whilst Jacob Greaves didn’t cover himself in much glory throughout, the ex-Hull City man at least lasted the full 90 minutes which can’t be said for another notable underperformer at the back.

Ben Godfrey, again, looked out of his depth pulling on Ipswich blue, with both of Spurs’ goals in the first half originating from Son constantly bamboozling the former Everton defender, before teeing up Brennan Johnson for a somewhat easy finish.

Godfrey’s horror show first half resulted in McKenna hauling him off the pitch at the half-time interval, with the ropey 27-year-old failing to win a single tackle or duel, alongside also only registering six accurate passes when attempting to build attacks away from being routinely under the cosh.

This isn’t the only time this campaign that the ex-Toffees right-back has been hooked off by his new manager after an out-of-sorts defensive showing, with Godfrey surviving just an hour or so on the pitch when Manchester City came to town in late January, as Pep Guardiola’s rampant visitors ran out convincing 6-0 winners.

Looking at the table above, it does feel as if Godfrey can’t cut it against some of the Premier League’s elite attackers, with a worrying seven goals shipped from his 109 minutes of action versus City and Spurs, among other negative statistics.

McKenna will presumably bring Axel Tuanzebe back into the side when his suspension ceases to be, with his replacement not exactly banging the door down for most first-team chances moving forward.

If Ipswich are to stay up, they cannot afford more leaky showings, with the Atalanta loanee needing to be ditched now to give his team a fighting chance at survival.

Ipswich must now sell £35k-p/w flop who McKenna said had a 'high ceiling'

Kieran McKenna could be ruthless this coming summer in ditching this expensive Ipswich Town flop.
