Amorim forced into Man Utd changes v Sunderland as Wilcox and Berrada feelings shared

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim looks to be on thin ice as inconsistent results have sparked concern about whether he is capable of taking United to the next level, with the manager set to be forced into personnel changes this weekend.

After securing a surprising win against world champions Chelsea, it looked like United were going to record their first back-to-back Premier League wins under Amorim as they faced relegation candidates Brentford. However, two early goals from Igor Thiago shattered United’s hopes, and they went on to lose 3-1.

This defeat has reignited speculation that Amorim may be replaced, with names like former England boss Gareth Southgate being linked. United’s next fixture is against newly promoted Sunderland, who have made a strong start to the season…

Amorim forced into changes despite Wilcox and Berrada faith

Reports indicate that there is internal concern at United that Amorim’s position will become untenable if he doesn’t make a change and suffers defeat to the Black Cats.

Indeed, Teamtalk journalist Dean Jones has shared a scoop from inside Old Trafford that Amorim has to change his personnel in light of his refusal to alter his system, and that failure this weekend could be the nail in the coffin.

“There is no way he can go into the Sunderland game and just play the same old tape yet again. I have spoken to connections close to the club, and there seems to be an expectation that this time, something does change. Realistically, it probably will not be the system.

“Because they have worked so tirelessly on his formation, he will probably roll it out again – but one thing he can do this time is change the personnel. This is the area that people seem to feel is most likely to change.

“It’s a huge game for him! And it really could lead to a big decision over his future if it goes badly. So let’s see whether he is brave enough to make a bold call or two. I get the feeling he might finally do it – maybe in goal or midfield…or both.”

The internal pressure that Jones mentions is reportedly not coming from Jason Wilcox or Omar Berarda, who both want Amorim to have until the end of the season to give him a chance to turn things around. Part of the reason they want this may be down to United leading the league in a number of attacking metrics like chances created this season, and they may be sympathetic with the head coach that his players are failing to capitalise.

How Man Utd could line up against Sunderland

Jones highlighted the goal and midfield as two areas where Amorim could make a change, but there are other positions that could be modified as well.

So far this season, Altay Bayindir has been Amorim’s favoured goalkeeper, with the previous first choice, Andre Onana, being exiled on loan to Turkey. However, a number of mistakes have led to calls for deadline day signing Senne Lemmens to be given a chance in goal. The 23-year-old has reportedly impressed in training, and against newly promoted Sunderland, he may be given a chance to start.

In midfield, the lack of game time for Kobbie Mainoo has upset fans, as it looks like he may push for a move away from the club in January. Re-introducing the Carrington graduate to the starting lineup would likely carry some favour with the United faithful and may help them out on the pitch.

Another change Amorim could make is in the right wing-back position. Diogo Dalot was largely at fault for Brentford’s first goal, and if Amad is ready to play following his leave last week, then that is a positive change that Amorim could make.

Jones said Amorim is unlikely to change his system, and since it’s creating chances, that isn’t surprising. With these potential changes, Amorim could both shore up his defence and add players who can score, but these changes would likely be one of the last rolls of the dice for the manager.

Alice Capsey has been called up to the England Women’s ODI squad to face West Indies as cover for Heather Knight, who was struck down by a hamstring problem during her half-century at Chelmsford, which helped seal a 3-0 sweep of the T20I series between the sides. The home squad will also be bolstered by pace bowler Lauren Filer, who has returned to action after a knee injury sustained during the Ashes in January, and will be available for the first of the three games, in Derby on Friday.Knight was set to undergo scans on her right hamstring on Tuesday. She battled through obvious discomfort towards the end of her unbeaten 66 off 47 balls at Chelmsford the previous day, and did not take the field for West Indies’ innings.Knight was the standout performer in an England side that reached 144 for 5 before Lauren Bell, Em Arlott, Linsey Smith and Charlie Dean shared the wickets evenly to restrict West Indies to 127 for 8. This was despite another lone hand from captain Hayley Matthews.Related

Capsey, batting for the first time in the series, only managed 4 before she was caught by Realeanna Grimmond to give Jahzara Claxton her maiden international wicket. It was the first real test of England’s line-up after they had conceded just three wickets across the previous two games. The victory completed a first series win for Nat Sciver-Brunt as captain after she replaced Knight in the aftermath of England’s failed winter Ashes campaig. She praised her predecessor for punching through the pain to take her side to a competitive total in the face of Matthews’ 3 for 32 and an impressive debut by Claxton, who claimed 1 for 15 from her four overs.”Her innings was pretty special to get us up to that total, being a competitive and winning score in the end,” said Sciver-Brunt, who was England’s next-best batter for the match with 37 off 40. “That just shows her class and experience.”There were echoes of the T20 World Cup, when Knight was injured while batting and England went on to drop five catches – ending their campaign in the group stage with a loss to West Indies – as the hosts put down three chances in as many balls on Monday.Sciver-Brunt grassed the first of those, a sitter at midwicket that would have removed Grimmond off the bowling of Dean, who missed a return catch next ball. But Sciver-Brunt ended up taking a screamer at mid-off to remove Jannillea Glasgow off the bowling of Arlott after England quickly restored order in the field.”We probably didn’t have our best fielding day… compared to the first two games where we were very good,” she said. “It is hard to get a clean to sweep on fielding, I suppose, and to keep those standards high, but that’s what we’re pushing for, that’s what we’re driving for.”Filer will be joined in the bowling ranks by fellow seamers Kate Cross and 19-year-old Mahika Gaur, who were named in the ODI squad only for the visit from West Indies while Issy Wong makes way after being picked purely for the T20I leg in which she collected two wickets from two games at 22.50 and an economy rate of 5.62.Allrounder Sciver-Brunt announced before the series started that she would play as a batter only against West Indies and remains uncertain as to when she might return to bowling as she continues her comeback from a long-standing Achilles tendon issue. India tour England in June and July and Sciver-Brunt said she was “definitely planning on bowling during the World Cup” in India later in the year.”I’m feeling pretty good physically,” she said. “Really happy with how I got through that series and I guess performance-wise with the bat, a bit up and down, but, being the first three games that I’ve played in a while, I’m pretty happy with that.”Sciver-Brunt scored 92 runs across three T20I innings, including a decisive 55 not out as England took an unassailable 2-0 lead at Hove.England’s top order will likely include Emma Lamb, included in the ODI squad at the expense of Maia Bouchier after an excellent start to the domestic season, in which she leads the one-day run-scorers’ list.Sciver-Brunt said new head coach Charlotte Edwards’ emphasis on domestic form as a selection tool appeared to be having a positive impact on the England squad already: “When I look around at the nets, there looks to be a lot of people who are high on confidence with their batting and bowling as well, so I guess it’s slightly different having that experience playing up until now.”

Latvia vs England: Tuchel set to unleash never seen before partnership and Rashford redemption

After Thomas Tuchel’s England side defeated Wales in convincing fashion, courtesy of goals from Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins and Bukayo Saka, their focus now turn towards Tuesday’s trip to face Latvia.

It was another statement victory from the Three Lions, who found themselves three goals to the good by the 20th minute. Starting as they meant to go on, Rogers was perfectly placed to slam home Marc Guehi’s cutback in the third minute, before Watkins converted courtesy of Saka’s pass just eight minutes later.

The best goal was saved for last. Saka cut inside in vintage fashion before finding the upright to leave Karl Darlow with no chance. It is fair to say that Tuchel is finally beginning to make his impact as the 2026 World Cup closes in.

Four England stars Thomas Tuchel could rescue after Southgate struggles

The former Chelsea boss isn’t afraid to make some bold choices…

ByTom Cunningham Sep 7, 2025

Now looking ahead to Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against Latvia, we’ve taken at five things to expect from England.

5 Elliot Anderson and Declan Rice's midfield partnership

Ever since Kalvin Phillips dropped out of England contention, the Three Lions have had a midfield problem next to Declan Rice. For so long, it was that aforementioned duo at the heart of Gareth Southgate’s midfield. They sat deep and provided the foundation for England’s best attacking players to thrive and that’s when they had some of their best success – reaching the final of the 2020 Euros.

As England fell short at the final hurdle once again at the 2024 Euros – this time against Spain – it was clear that balance was missing from their midfield without a clear partner for Rice. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kobbie Mainoo and Jude Bellingham all tried filling that role, but all failed. And now, a new contender has emerged under Tuchel.

Elliott Anderson thrived in September’s international break and his partnership with Rice dominated Wales and could do the same against Latvia. If it proves as successful as last time, then the Three Lions could have an unexpected answer to their problem.

4 How will Lewis-Skelly respond to Tuchel's warning?

Tuchel certainly hasn’t been afraid to say what he thinks so far and the latest to discover that trait has been Myles Lewis-Skelly. The Arsenal man has struggled to get into Mikel Arteta’s strongest side so far this season and has been warned that it could cost him his World Cup place if things don’t change soon.

It makes the game against Latvia crucial for Lewis-Skelly. Whilst he hasn’t been given the opportunity to impress for Arsenal this season, the defender should look to take full advantage of Tino Livramento’s injury to stake his claim for a starting place under Tuchel in the coming months.

Whether it’s 22-year-old Livramento or 19-year-old Lewis-Skelly, the battle to claim that starting left-back spot only looks destined to heat up as the World Cup approaches.

3 Red-hot Kane to continue ruthless streak

There were some opinions at last year’s Euros that suggested Harry Kane was no longer the man to lead England’s frontline. The forward, carrying an injury throughout the tournament, often struggled to make his mark and watched on as Cole Palmer, Ollie Watkins and others stole the spotlight.

Now, at 32 years old, some may have expected the former Tottenham Hotspur forward to continue those struggles before gradually being forced out of Tuchel’s side. However, the reality is that Kane is neck and neck with Erling Haaland as the world’s best striker – even at 32.

Any suggestions that he’s no longer good enough to lead England are long gone. Instead, the question often asked about the striker these days is just how many he’ll score. In his last 10 games for Bayern Munich, he has scored an incredible 18 goals and looks destined to continue that ruthless streak for the Three Lions.

2 Nico O'Reilly provides Tuchel with unexpected dilemma

Although it’s easy to complain about the international break, it does provide some memorable moments for the likes of Nico O’Reilly, who has earned his first call-up following Reece James’ injury. The Manchester City left-back has made the role his own under Pep Guardiola, which is no easy task, and now has an unexpected chance to do the same for England.

Tuchel has already shown his willingness to not only hand fresh players their chance, but also hand them a permanent place if they impress enough. Anderson has so far benefitted from that, Loftus-Cheek could do so, and O’Reilly may well be next in line to hand the England boss a selection headache.

1 Has Rashford done enough to start?

After reclaiming his England place, Marcus Rashford will now have all eyes on a starting place. Last month, it was Noni Madueke who surprised many with his performances.

This time around, Rashford could take his Barcelona form into the England camp. No longer the shunned Manchester United star, the winger has been back to his best on the biggest stage in Spain.

England have so often missed his directness from the left-hand side, but his form simply did not warrant a starting place. Having scored three goals and assisted another five in eight games for Barcelona, though, the 27-year-old has arguably done enough to break into Tuchel’s strongest side against Wales and Latvia.

Bates, Heath steer Durham to victory over winless Somerset

Visitors win basement battle despite all-round efforts of Amanda-Jade Wellington

Bess Heath demonstrated maturity aplenty to carry Durham to a four-wicket victory over Somerset in the Vitality Blast women’s competition at the Cooper Associates Ground, Taunton.Chasing 139 to win, the visitors were indebted to the 23-year-old middle order batter, who scored 38 not out from 25 balls under pressure to help the visitors reach their target with 11 deliveries to spare. Suzie Bates top-scored with 49, while Somerset seamer Mollie Robbins returned figures of 3 for 22 in a losing cause.Put into bat, Somerset were in good shape at 75 for 2, thanks to knocks of 36 and 31 from Bex Odgers and Niamh Holland respectively. But Sophia Turner and Mady Villiers claimed two wickets apiece as Somerset lost their way during the middle overs, and it required a breezy 31 from Amanda-Jade Wellington to haul the cider county to a modest 138 for 7.Durham have now won two of their six games in the short format, but Somerset remain without a victory and continue to prop up the table.Eager to make amends with the bat following a series of modest scores, Somerset made a disappointing start, Amelie Munday chasing a wide delivery from Grace Thompson and finding backward point in the opening over. Doing her best to redress the balance, Odgers pulled Lauren Filer for six, while Holland twice drove Thompson to the boundary as the powerplay gathered momentum.Katie Levick’s legspin proved expensive as Durham struggled to stem the flow of runs in the face of aggressive batting from Somerset’s second-wicket pair, Holland ramping Filer for another six as the partnership realised 50. The stand was worth 58 when Holland, having contributed a progressive 31 from 20 balls, attempted to drive Villiers over the top and found long-on with the score 63 for 2 in the eighth.Odgers advanced her score to 36 from 33 balls and had a half-century in her sights, only to then dance down the pitch to Sophia Turner and be comprehensively stumped by Mia Rogers as Somerset slipped to 75 for 3 at the halfway stage.Sensing an opportunity to apply pressure, the experienced Bates and Levick successfully restricted the scoring and Sophie Luff and Fran Wilson, tied down and unable to find the boundary, both succumbed to frustration as the home side slipped to 91 for 5. Charlie Dean came and went quickly, removed by Levick, as Durham continued to turn the screw and Somerset were 102 for 6 when Wellington joined Alex Griffiths in the middle.Again cast in the role of saviours, the seventh-wicket pair dug their team out of a hole, adding 36 from 22 balls to disrupt the opposition bowlers and carry Somerset to their highest short-format total of the season so far. Adept at working the field, Australia international Wellington scored 31 off 17 balls and accrued five fours, while Griffiths finished unbeaten on 11.Somerset needed early wickets and Robbins removed Leah Dobson for 11 in the fifth, but the indefatigable Bates proved an altogether different proposition. The New Zealand international dominated the reply, contributing four boundaries in a powerplay that yielded 49 and staging an opening stand of 38 with Dobson to afford the chase solid foundations.Villiers took on Wellington’s legspin, harvesting a brace of fours before falling to the Australian with the score 49 for 2, but Hollie Armitage proved obdurate in contributing 14 at a run a ball in an alliance of 38 for the third wicket with Bates. Griffiths bowled Armitage to give the home side renewed hope and, when Robbins had Bates caught at mid-on in the 13th, Durham were 87 for 4, needing a further 52 at 6.5 an over with two new batters at the crease.Robbins was enjoying herself and she induced Rogers to hole out to Griffiths in the deep to further reduce the visitors to 93 for 5, at which point the contest was back in the balance. Katherine Fraser was run out by Griffiths for 10 to set-up a potentially interesting finish, but Heath demonstrated sound temperament in an unbroken stand of 20 with Thompson to settle the outcome.

Their best CF since Kane: Paratici wants Spurs to sign £87m "freak of nature"

Throughout multiple generations, Tottenham Hotspur supporters have been blessed with the opportunity to witness numerous elite-level attackers in North London.

Gareth Bale is just one example of a first-team member who has captured the hearts of the fanbase as a result of his ability to impress within the final third.

The Welshman became infamous for his right-sided role, which often saw him glide past the opposition before finding the top corner after cutting inside onto his favoured left foot.

However, current boss Thomas Frank doesn’t quite have that luxury at present, that’s despite the hierarchy backing the Dane with over £100m worth of transfers in his first window.

That could be about to change in the coming months, as returning Sporting Director Fabio Paratici looks to recruit numerous new attackers to bolster the club’s Premier League standing.

Spurs’ hunt for new attacking talent in January

Over the last couple of weeks, Spurs have been strongly linked with a move to land Bournemouth sensation Antoine Semenyo after his impressive start to the campaign.

The Ghanaian has scored six times and registered three assists to date, with the Lilywhites reported with a potential attempt to land the 25-year-old in the winter window.

However, the Cherries star isn’t the only star on their radar, with TBR Football claiming that Paratici is extremely keen on a move for Porto talisman Samu Aghehowa in the near future.

The report states that the Sporting Director is a huge admirer of the 21-year-old attacker who has scored 35 times in his 54 appearances for the Portuguese outfit.

It also claims that the Spaniard has an £87m release clause within his current deal, but he could be available at a cut-price given his current employers’ financial situation.

Why Samu could be Spurs' best forward since Kane

Just like Bale, Harry Kane is another player who has forever put himself in Spurs history as a result of his performances over a sustained period in North London.

The England international made himself the best-ever forward in the Lilywhites’ history, scoring a staggering 280 goals during his decade at the club – the most of any player in history.

However, the club’s lack of tangible success on the field saw the 32-year-old depart to join Bayern Munich in an £82m transfer back in the summer of 2023.

Kane’s departure has left a huge hole in the attack, with Frank subsequently having to rely on forwards such as Richarlison and Dominic Solanke after taking the reins.

The Brazilian has only netted three times in 2025/26, whilst the latter of the duo has been restricted to just 31 minutes of league action this season due to a recurring ankle issue.

Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke

However, Frank could be blessed by the addition of Samu, with the Spaniard having all the tools to make himself the club’s next big-name talisman – potentially taking the first-team to new heights.

When comparing the Porto star’s stats with those of Kane from the current season, he’s managed to better the former Lilywhites man in numerous key attacking departments.

Samu, who’s been dubbed a “freak of nature” by one analyst, has posted a better shot on target accuracy rate, which has seen him take advantage of more chances that have been handed his way.

He’s also completed more short passes to date, whilst also winning more of the aerial battles he’s entered – numbers which make him the perfect hold-up striker.

However, the 21-year-old is also more than capable of driving past the opposition himself, as seen by his 50% take-on success rate – a tally that is higher than what Kane has been able to muster.

Such numbers highlight the all-round quality the Porto star possesses at present, but he’s only going to get better as he continues his development in the professional game.

Should he make the move to North London, he would have huge expectations placed upon him – mainly due to the levels achieved by Kane during his own stint at the club.

However, Samu has already showcased he’s able to create carnage for the opposition, with Paratici needing to work tirelessly to land the Spaniard’s signature in the coming months.

Asalanka expects seam and batter-friendly pitch at Khettarama

“There’s definitely a difference in this surface,” says Sri Lanka’s ODI captain

Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka thinks there may be more for seam bowlers in the Khettarama track than usual. He also thinks there may be more for batters.Having been left behind in ODI cricket – failing to even qualify for the Champions Trophy earlier this year – Sri Lanka are desperate to advance again. One of the ways in which the current leadership think they can close that gap is to match home pitches more closely to the behaviour of pitches found across the world. The pitch at Khettarama, for instance, has been extremely spin friendly for years. But ODI captain Asalanka suggested ahead of the match that this Khettarama pitch might be different. Sri Lanka had won their previous series, against Champions Trophy semi-finalists Australia, 2-0.Related

“There’s definitely a difference in this surface,” he said “Even if it’s helfpul to spinners, even in the previous series against Australia, we saw that it would seam, and the fast bowlers got wickets. Asitha Fernando got five in two matches. I think this pitch will be a bit more batting friendly than usual”Sri Lanka’s seam-bowling stocks are unusually full. Asalanka suggested they would trial seam-bowling allrounder Milan Rathnayake in this series, but they also have the likes of Asitha, Dilshan Madushanka, and Eshan Malinga in the squad. This is also the first match Sri Lanka play under the new ODI playing conditions, under which one of the two balls used until the 34th over is then chosen by the fielding team to be used for the last 16. Ostensibly, this is an attempt to bring reverse swing back into the ODI game, which may suit the like sof Asitha, who has frequently reverse-swung the ball in Test cricket.”We’re also new to that rule, so we are still formulating our plans,” Asalanka said about the new playing condition. “It must be to favour fast bowlers that they brought this new rule to use one ball after 34 overs. It’s possible that we will have to treat two balls in two different ways before we decide which one we will use after the 34th. We’re hoping to land on the right plan from the first match.”Although Sri Lanka failed to qualify for the Champions Trophy, they have won enough ODI matches (now an infrequently-played format), to rise to fourth on the rankings. Asalanka thinks that is not enough, though.”We can’t be satisfied yet. I’ve said before that our main goal is to be in the top three. Right now we’re only in the top four. We’ve got one more rung to climb on that ladder, and then we have to think about where we go from there. We are confident about our past performances, but we think we have a long way to go forward.”
