Barcelona’s start to the ongoing 2019/20 campaign has been a far cry from what they have probably wanted it to be.

Of course, La Liga’s curtain-raiser saw them defeated to Athletic Bilbao and that somehow set the tone of the upcoming games as well.

And true, the Catalan giants are currently top of the league and also top of their Champions League group so any supposed claims of a crisis are not exactly valid, are they?

Well, yes and no.

In the first four games of the new campaign, Barcelona tallied two wins, a defeat and a draw in the process. By their standards, that was a rather slow start that saw them yield the top of the mountain to some of their rivals.

Coincidently (or not?), that was also the period Lionel Messi was out of the team with a foot injury that made him miss, you guessed it, the initial four games of the season.

He was rushed back and ended up tallying some minutes in the next couple of matches but suffered a relapse and had to sit out one additional game once again.

Luckily for Barcelona, they managed to dispatch Getafe in a 2-0 victory even without their talisman, but by that point their struggles were evident despite results sometimes going their way.

And then suddenly they started stringing together victory after victory and clawed their way back to the top of La Liga, jumping over Real Madrid in the process.

So what changed? Messi came back, of course.

In the last seven games Barcelona played since his return, they won five, lost just one and tallied one draw along the way.

The little Argentine, however, bagged a goal and/or an assist in each of those bar the goalless draw against Slavia Prague at the Camp Nou. That makes for nine goals and three assists in seven games.

And how many have his teammates scored, you may ask?

A total of ten across all of those matches.

One man scored nine and the rest of the team scored ten, three of which were assisted by Messi as well. If we remove his contribution, that’s just seven goals out of 19 that were bagged without the Argentine’s influence.

So no, Barcelona are not in a crisis per se. At least, they won’t be in a real crisis for as long as the alien can kick a ball and have a say on that matter but what happens when he’s not around?

What happens when’s gone in the foreseeable future?

“Messidependencia” is not really a myth, it’s very much Barcelona’s reality – something that we’ve seen on previous occasions before with the player himself even forced to address the issue directly back in 2016 – and Valverde owes a lot to the little man from Rosario.

But the only way for them to really improve is to somehow manage to accomplish something without him.

Can they really do it? Only time will tell.

وأكمل: “ضربة جزاء الزمالك صحيحة، وإبراهيم نور الدين كان قريبًا من اللعبة، وقراره سليم”. وتطرق الحكم الدولي إلى الحديث عن مباراة الأهلي والمصري، قائلًا: “هناك لمسة يد من محمد شريف في هدف الأهلي الأول في مرمى المصري، وهذا الخطأ غير من نتيجة المباراة، والهدف غير صحيح”.

وفي نفس السياق تحدث أحمد الشناوي الخبير التحكيمي عن الحالات التحكيمة في مباراة الزمالك والمقاولون قائلا: “أشرف بن شرقي قام بدفع لاعب المقاولون العرب من خارج منطقة الجزاء، وليس داخل المنطقة فليس هناك ركلة جزاء لصالح المقاولون”.

نشرت أندية برشلونة، ريال مدريد ويوفنتوس بيانًا رسميًا للرد على تهديدات الاتحاد الأوروبي لكرة القدم “يويفا” بسبب عدم انسحابهم من دوري السوبر الأوروبي.

كان برشلونة أحد الأندية المؤسسة للبطولة لم تطبق فعليًا مع 11 ناديًا ولكن انسحبت 9 أندية حتى الآن ولم يتبقى سوى ريال مدريد، يوفنتوس والعملاق الكتالوني.

ولكن خرج الاتحاد الأوروبي لكرة القدم يوم أمس، الجمعة، وأكد على أن هناك عقوبات على الأندية التي أسست تلك البطولة، حيث فرض عقوبات مالية صغيرة على المنسحبين ولكن تعهد رئيس يويفا، ألكسندر تشيفرين، بمعاقبة برشلونة، ريال مدريد ويوفنتوس بعقوبات أقوى لاستمرارهم حتى الآن (طالع التفاصيل)، وجاء بيان الأندية الثلاثة كالتالي:

“- تلقت الأندية المؤسسة لدوري السوبر الأوروبي، ولا تزال تتلقى ضغوطًا وتهديدات للتخلي عن المشروع ومسئوليته، هذا غير مقبول في دولة القانون وقد أصدرت المحاكم بالفعل حكمًا بشأن هذه البطولة من خلال أمر فيفا ويويفا بالامتناع بحزم أثناء إجراءات المحكمة، بشكل مباشر أو من خلال الكيانات التابعة لهما، تنفيذ أي إجراء قد يعاقب الأندية المؤسسة أو التي تعترض على البطولة.

– تم تأسيس مشروع دوري السوبر الأوروبي بوجود 9 أندية أخرى للأسباب التالية:

* من أجل تقديم حلول للوضع الصعب الذي أصبحت عليه كرة القدم، وأعربت هذه الأندية عن قلقها من الأزمات الاقتصادية التي تواجهها من خلال هذا المشروع وكانوا يرغبون في التواصل مع فيفا ويويفا والتعاون من أجل إقامة هذه المسابقة.

* كان قرار جميع الأندية أنه لن تتم إقامة البطولة إلا إذا وافقت مؤسسات مثل فيفا ويويفا واعترفت بدوري السوبر الأوروبي مع استمرار الأندية المؤسسة بالمشاركة في الدوريات المحلية ولكن في النهاية رفضت هذه المؤسسات إجراء أي حوارات بناءة وهادفة.

*هناك أزمة كبيرة اقتصادية تمر بها الأندية في عالم كرة القدم وتهدد بقاءها ولكن هناك التزامات مادية تحتاج الأندية إلى دفعها أكثر بكثير مما يقدمه الاتحاد الأوروبي لكرة القدم بالوقت الحالي.

– كان هناك تفاهم بين الأندية الـ 12 المؤسسة أن هذه البطولة فرصة فريدة من أجل تقديم مباريات أفضل للجماهير حول العالم وزيادة الاهتمام العالمي بهذه الرياضة التي تواجه الكثير من التهديدات للاستمرار في المستقبل.

– لذلك قررت هذه الأندية أن تُعلن عن تأسيسها لدوري السوبر الأوروبي من أجل محاولة إيجاد حلول للوضع الراهن وضمان توفير احتياجات الأندية الاقتصادية على مدار السنوات المقبلة.

– نأسف لموقف الأندية المنسحبة بعد أن تعهدوا ببعض الالتزامات للاتحاد الأوروبي لكرة القدم بالأمس بأنهم لن يشاركوا في دوري السوبر الأوروبي مرة أخرى وإلا سيتم توقيع عقوبة قدرها 100 مليون يورو عليهم، لأن المشاكل التي دفعتهم لمشاركتنا لتأسيس تلك البطولة لم تنته بعد ولذلك سنواصل البحث عن حلول تساعد في تطوير كرة القدم على الرغم من الضغوط والتهديدات غير المقبولة التي نواصل تلقيها من الاتحاد الأوروبي لكرة القدم.

– في الختام، نؤكد مجددًا لكلاً من فيفا ويويفا وجميع لاعبي كرة القدم، كما فعلنا في عدة مناسبات منذ الإعلان عن تلك البطولة، على التزمنا وإرادتنا الحازمة للمناقشة والحوار مع الاحترام الواجب دون ضغوط لا تطاق تمامًا ومع احترام سيادة القانون لإيجاد أنسب الحلول لاستدامة الأندية في عالم كرة القدم”.

Celtic yesterday announced ticket information for the Betfred Cup final at Hampden Park next month, with the details posted on their official website and shared on Twitter via @CelticFC.

According to celticfc.net, tickets for the December 8th showpiece have been balloted among season ticket holders on the Home Cup Ticket Scheme whose payment was taken by direct debit for the games at Parkhead against Dunfermline and Partick Thistle in earlier rounds of the competition, and who bought a ticket under their own client reference for the semi-final win over Hibernian.

The club acknowledged on celticfc.net that they don’t have a sufficient ticket allocation to satisfy all members who meet the above criteria but appealed to supporters for “understanding” of the situation. There will not be any tickets on general sale for the Betfred Cup final against their rivals.

Many Celtic fans who have been unable to get tickets despite meeting the eligibility criteria have vented their anger at the arrangements on Twitter:

وافق اتحاد كرة القدم على طلب نادي بيراميدز بتأجيل مباراته مع الإنتاج الحربي في بطولة الدوري المصري الممتاز.

وكان من المقرر إقامة مباراة بيراميدز والإنتاج الحربي يوم 19 مايو الجاري، بين مباراتي الفريق في بطولة كأس الكونفدرالية الإفريقية.

وقرر اتحاد الكرة إقامة مباراة بيراميدز والإنتاج الحربي خلال فترة تجمع المنتخب الأولمبي بدون لاعبيه الدوليين.

وفي السياق ذاته، رفض اتحاد الكرة طلب بيراميدز بتأجيل مباراته أمام المقاولون في الدوري، لإقامتها بعد مباراتيه الإفريقيتين.

ويعد بيراميدز هو ممثل مصر الوحيد في ربع نهائي الكونفدرالية، وذلك بعد تأهله محتلًا وصافة المجموعة الرابعة خلف الرجاء المغربي.

ويلعب بيراميدز المباراة الأولى في مصر يوم 16 مايو المقبل، على أن يكون لقاء العودة في 23 من الشهر ذاته.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Manchester United star Marcus Rashford has given his complete backing to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

What did he say?

The Red Devils have endured a difficult start to the current campaign, finding themselves in seventh in the Premier League, and with particularly disappointing defeats to the likes of Crystal Palace and Newcastle to their name.

Having put pen to paper on a new long-term deal back in early July, Rashford – who Transfermarkt value at £72m – insisted he had no hesitations over committing his future to the club, and insisted he and Solskjaer share the same vision.

He said: “There was no hesitation from me over signing a new contract. And it was the same for Ole as well – I could see where his head was at, where he wanted the club to be at and for me it was just a no-brainer. We were on the same page and wanted the same things for the club. Ole is a great guy and he has the club’s interests at heart so there’s not a better person for the job in my opinion.”

Vindication

When things were going really wrong for United earlier this season – most notably in the games and weeks up to that dismal 1-0 defeat to Newcastle – Rashford was the man who was arguably dug out for the most criticism. The England international had gone on a run of one goal in seven games in the league, and his struggles provided a snapshot of the mire the Red Devils were in.

Reports had even suggested Solskjaer’s future at the club was in question, and it looked like Old Trafford was heading for dark times. But, a run of five wins in their last six games – including a Rashford revival that has seen him net in three of the previous four top-flight matches – has rejuvenated spirits, and given the United boss some breathing room.

For Rashford now to publicly come out and throw his backing behind the Norwegian, and also insist that his new contract in the summer was a “no-brainer”, is great news for Solskjaer. The striker’s comments are completely unequivocal, leaving no room for misinterpretation about just how highly he thinks of the current manager. It’s a vote of confidence that will strike all the right chords.

Eddie Nketiah is back in full training and it is fair to say that many Leeds fans are delighted with the news.

The striker has mainly been a bit-part player this term having failed to start a single league game, but his presence in the squad doesn’t go unnoticed and the difference he can provide from the bench can be very useful.

As such, his absence was felt over the last few weeks, with the Whites having to worryingly rely solely on Patrick Bamford to lead the line – and no other senior striker on the bench to take his place.

A few weeks out is not what either party would have wanted but it has provided Nketiah with a period of rest and supporters will hope he comes back re-energised and with a renewed motivation to break into the first team, ready to score the goals necessary for promotion.

There has been talk recently of the Gunners recalling him from his loan in January, something fans are keen not to happen, with a few sending messages to Nketiah in a bid to persuade him to stay.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has been speaking to the media ahead of his side’s game against Watford this weekend.

Firstly, he offered a quite hilarious update on the fitness of Sofiane Boufal, revealing that the Moroccan had sustained a swollen toe after stubbing it on a table while running to his kitchen – the former Lille man is a doubt for the game against the Hornets because of the issue, as he hasn’t trained for three days.

However, the former RB Leipzig boss had some more serious words to say on the Saints’ upcoming fixtures.

What did he say?

The Austrian said: “I think every period is important, but this one now against teams around us is very, very important – they are all ‘six-point games’, if you want.

“Wins are massive and losing is also massive, so this is a very, very important period until Christmas.”

“Everybody knows that if you want to be in the end above the (relegation) line, then you must start to take points consistently.”

Absolutely must keep stressing this to his players

Hasenhuttl states that this period is “very, very important” for his side – however, even that is an understatement.

Southampton take on Watford next, before facing games against Norwich, Newcastle, West Ham and Aston Villa, a run of fixtures that is absolutely pivotal to their hopes of staying up, or even getting to Christmas without being the Premier League’s basement side.

That is a very real possibility, as the Saints are just one point off the bottom of England’s top-flight as things stand, and will head into December as the 20th-placed team if they lose to Watford.

History has shown that, if you are at the bottom of the Premier League come Christmas, then your chances of survival are very, very slim – only three sides since 1999/2000 have survived a campaign having been bottom at Christmas.

“Three times since 1999-2000 have clubs — West Brom 2004-05, Sunderland 2013-14 and Leicester 2014-15 — been bottom at Christmas and survived.”

Achieving 12 points from those aforementioned four fixtures is very feasible if the impressive showing against Arsenal is anything to go by, and would leave the south coast side on 21 points from 17 games, which isn’t the worst situation in the world.

He has already touched on it, but Hasenhuttl absolutely must drill the importance of these next four games into his players until they can’t get it out of their heads – it is that crucial.
