Fans of Liverpool have been reacting to a post on Twitter, in which the Reds central-midfielder, Georginio Wijnaldum, reflected on the club’s recent Champions League elimination.

Following a 3-1 defeat in the first leg of the tie, Liverpool faced an uphill battle in the return fixture at Anfield on Tuesday evening, and, despite creating a number of chances against Zinedine Zidane’s side on the night, were ultimately knocked out of the competition following a 0-0 draw.

In reaction to their elimination, Wijnaldum then took to Twitter, stating that it was “frustrating” to see Liverpool’s Champions League campaign come to an end in the manner it did, before going on to claim that he and his team “gave it all” against Madrid, but they just had “no luck to finish it”.

However, Liverpool fans then flocked to have their say on the matter, with many appearing furious at Wijnaldum’s efforts in the fixture, while some went as far to claim they feel it is now time for the midfielder to leave the club.

حذر المدرب المساعد لمنتخب السنغال، ريجيس بوجارت، من مباراتي مصر في التصفيات النهائية لقارة إفريقيا المؤهلة إلى كأس العالم 2022، والتي ستقام في نهاية شهر مارس المقبل.

وتلتقي مصر والسنغال في يومي 24 و29 مارس المقبل، من أجل حجز بطاقة التأهل إلى مونديال قطر 2022 والذي سيقام في الفترة من 21 نوفمبر حتى 18 ديسمبر من العام الجاري.

وتحدث بوجارت عن مباراتي مصر في التصفيات خلال حواره مع صحيفة “Actufoot” السنغالية، وقال: “ستكون مواجهتان مثيرتان للغاية، ولكن أيضًا صعبتين”.

وأضاف: “أعتقد أن منتخب مصر لديه شخصية قوية في قارة إفريقيا، ويمكنه أن يزعج الكثير من المنافسين، لديهم قوة دفاعية قادرة على منع خطورة المهاجمين في المنتخبات الإفريقية”.

وتابع: “يمتلك منتخب مصر 3 لاعبين مهاجمين وموهوبين للغاية مثل محمد صلاح، مصطفى محمد، وعمر مرموش”.

وأتم تصريحاته: “لقد كنا في حالة فرحة واحتفالات على مدار الأيام الماضية، سيتعين علينا التركيز سريعًا لتكون هناك حالة من الاستقرار، لأن تلك المواجهتان تمثلان تحديًا كبيرًا بالنسبة لنا”.

Many Liverpool fans have been left to flock to an update from James Pearce on John Henry.

As per a tweet from The Athletic journalist, the American businessman and investor has apologised to Jurgen Klopp, Billy Hogan, the players and all of the staff involved with the Anfield faithful over his decision for the Reds to enter the proposed European Super League (ESL).

Pearce also shared a video of the full message and apology from Henry to the fans over the outrage that the news caused, as the Merseyside club have since pulled out of the ESL.

While an apology from Henry was welcome and much needed, the damage has already been done according to several LFC supporters, and that relationship may not be able to ever be built up again.

Daniel Pinder, the editor-in-chief of Get German Football News, has exclusively told Football FanCast that Jesse Marsch’s winning mentality built up at Salzburg would put him in good stead for the Celtic job.

Eddie Howe remains the clear favourite to replace Neil Lennon at Parkhead, but the 47-year-old American has emerged as another potential successor following his impressive work in the Austrian Bundesliga, although he is reportedly on Leipzig’s three-man shortlist to replace Julian Nagelsmann after his summer departure to Bayern Munich was confirmed on Tuesday.

Marsch, who previously said it’s an “honour” to be linked with Celtic, is on the verge of leading Salzburg to an eighth consecutive league title, and a second on the bounce during his two seasons at the club.

His Salzburg first caught the eye during last season’s Champions League, when his side that included a certain Erling Haaland pushed Liverpool all the way at Anfield.

Marsch learnt his trade in the MLS with both Montreal Impact and New York Red Bulls before becoming Ralf Rangnick’s assistant at Leipzig.

And Pinder told Football FanCast that the American could cope with the pressure in Paradise:

“You can link it to Steven Gerrard at Rangers. He went in there and had to build up his team but are expected to win 95 percent of their games and battle Celtic for the title.

“And Jesse Marsch already has that winning mentality, they’ve done well in Europe, they’ve done well in the league.

“He’s been working under a lot of brilliant coaches and now he’s got that coaching role for himself. I do think he will leave Salzburg; I think he’s ready for that next step.”

But does Pinder believe that Celtic would be that step up?

He added:

“I think Celtic is a step above Salzburg, but I do think if Nagelsmann leaves Leipzig then I think he would be more suited to that role. If he doesn’t replace Nagelsmann, then I think Celtic would be a perfect fit for him.”

Tottenham technical performance director Steve Hitchen has suggested that Graham Potter as a potential candidate to take over the vacant manager’s position at the club.

Jose Mourinho was sacked two weeks ago and Ryan Mason has since taken over on an interim basis. However, it seems unlikely that he will be given the job permanently.

According to the Daily Mail journalist Ian Ladyman, Hitchen has suggested to chairman Daniel Levy that Potter be considered for the role.

Left-field

Potter would seem to be a left-field appointment if Tottenham plump for him. Spurs have been linked with the likes of Julian Nagelsmann, Hansi Flick (The Telegraph), Erik Ten Hag (The Guardian) and Rafael Benitez – managers who have coached in, and occasionally won, the Champions League.

The Brighton boss does not match that profile, his European pedigree limited to a Europa League round of 32 run with Ostersunds three years ago.

Having said that, Potter has earned plaudits from the likes of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola for the way he has his Brighton team playing (The Football Faithful). The Seagulls may not have always managed to get the right results this season, but only six top-flight teams have had more shots on target per match, while they have averaged over 50% possession (WhoScored).

At Tottenham, he would have a better squad and a bigger budget than at the Amex Stadium, while he should also come a lot cheaper than the other options being mooted. Potter is certainly someone who should at least be considered as Mourinho’s long-term successor.
