Crossley: Phil Jones would bring experience to Fulham

Former Premier League goalkeeper Mark Crossley believes that Phil Jones would bring experience to Fulham.

90min reported that the Cottagers are one of a number of Championship clubs interested in the Manchester United outcast with a loan move the most likely scenario.

The 29-year-old didn’t feature at all last season for the Red Devils due to injury, but he did return to make his first appearance for United in 18 months in a behind closed doors friendly against Burnley earlier this month.

With the Red Devils bringing in Raphael Varane this summer, you would imagine that drops Jones down the pecking order to fifth choice centre-back at Old Trafford and so a temporary move away could be a good option for him in order to get some much needed game time.

Crossley believes that Jones would bring experience to Fulham, telling Football FanCast: “I like Phil Jones, I think he’s a good player. But it just worries me about how injury prone he is but he’s obviously a top, top player.

“You don’t get signed by Manchester United if you’re not a top player. So, again you do need experience around the squad and maybe Phil Jones is that one just to give that extra little bit of experience.”

Fulham have made a brilliant start to life back in the Championship under Marco Silva, picking up 13 points from a possible 15 so far and sit top of the table, conceding just three goals in the process.

Jefferson, Arnaldo e…

Ireland in control but Waters shows class

ScorecardIreland need a further eight Kenya wickets in order to reach the final of the ICC Intercontinental Cup, after dismissing the hosts for just 186 in their first innings. Following on, Kenya put up a much better fight, with Seren Waters – their classy 18-year-old debutant – remaining unbeaten on 65, but they still trail by 246.Kenya are by no means out of the contest, or the final, just yet. A draw will earn them their spot against Namibia in South Africa, though much depends on both Waters and Steve Tikolo – the youngest and eldest of the team. And judging by their first-innings effort, Kenya’s batsmen are thoroughly up against it.Kyle McCallan and Regan West took four wickets apiece as Kenya were rolled for 186. In the face of Ireland’s huge first-innings total of 578 for 4 declared, Kenya’s batsmen had no answer and as the pitch offered some turn for the slow bowlers, McCallan and West combined excellently.Only Tikolo (44) and Thomas Odoyo (32) looked like causing Ireland any trouble, and it was no surprise when Kenya were invited to follow on. It appeared Kenya might crumble again, when Trent Johnston made a double breakthrough to leave the home side on 76 for 2. But Tikolo and Waters dug in with an unbroken third-wicket stand of 70. Waters, in particular, was quick to dispatch anything short – Boyd Rankin was smacked for four fours in an over – and showed the benefit of using soft hands against the spinners.

WICB needs to get its act together

Julian Hunte promised to put the West Indies Cricket Board in order … but the same issues that made headlines before he became president are still hot topics

15-Oct-2008Almost two years ago West Indies captain Chris Gayle spoke a mouthful when calling for the board to improve its own performance if it wanted the players to do the same.He was publicly ridiculed by the board’s hierarchy for what a former local prime minister might have termed muscular language in putting his case for balance. He was threatened with disciplinary action because it was felt it wasn’t politically correct to criticise your de facto bosses in public. Generally speaking that statement is true, but it doesn’t necessarily suggest that one’s position is flawed.Truth knows no boundaries, has no friends, takes a natural course like a flowing river. Irrespective of the consequences you might have to face for speaking your mind, it doesn’t change the colour of the picture you have painted. For whatever reason, Gayle escaped sanction for speaking out against the board in public. The decision not to take action against him may have been influenced not only by the fact that he was right, but that public support for his stance was overwhelming.Truth be told, the West Indies skipper can make the same call now, and it is possible that events would play out in the same exact fashion because nothing has really changed from the board’s end, and this is truly an indictment of its leadership.Realistically for me, the only significant gain under current board president Julian Hunte is that he has been able to bridge the gap between the board and the players by inviting the players’ representative, the West Indies Players’ Association, through its president Dinnanath Ramnarine to be part of the decision-making process.Whether it had to do with players contracts, imaging or intellectual property rights or even being caught in the middle of commercial wrangling between telecommunication powerhouses, there used to be great uncertainty amid the tension whether a tour would be jeopardised if the players weren’t available or if, as the board was forced to do a few years back, choose a second-string team to tour Sri Lanka. This appears to have been solved. If this can be considered to be good news then it is very difficult to find anymore. And the board’s latest faux pas with the Stanford Super Series game compounds the situation. Not to mention the board’s chief executive officer Donald Peters putting his foot in his mouth when two players training with the Stanford team were axed for alleged drug abuse. In all of this it is not a case where the board doesn’t have the expertise, it seems like a question of whether it speaks with one voice. Does the right hand know what the left is doing? Are there personality clashes that will further damage the image of the board? Perhaps the biggest and most salient question is how to get the board to function efficiently despite having a core of intelligent and successful people at its disposal? Some may argue that the board sets policy and its up to its administrative staff to carry out these functions on a daily basis. To others this might be seen as a way of shifting blame, so in essence, the buck stops at the top.Bottom line. Hunte promised to put the West Indies Cricket Board in order. The same issues that made headlines before he became president are still hot topics. The board has to get its act together.

Helder Costa could seal Leeds loan exit

Out-of-favour Leeds United winger Helder Costa could leave the Whites on loan after Dan James signs, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Costa out of favour at Leeds

Marcelo Bielsa has many exciting attacking players at his disposal at Elland Road but Costa isn’t currently one of them.

The 27-year-old has played just 20 minutes of Premier League action so far this season so is clearly not an important part of Leeds’ plans moving forward.

The Latest: Tuesday morning development

According to O’Rourke on Twitter on Tuesday, Costa ‘has been made available’ for a loan move on deadline day, following the signing of Daniel James.

It remains to be seen if a bid will come in for the Portuguese speedster, but getting him off the books is now Victor Orta and co’s next order of business, claims O’Rourke.

The Verdict: Time to move on

Costa was a promising wide player but he hasn’t offered much for Leeds in a long time, scoring just seven goals in the last two-and-a-bit league seasons.

It is time for him to enjoy a fresh challenge, and if he can get more playing time elsewhere, it will be beneficial for all parties.

It is clear that Bielsa sees no future for Costa at Elland Road and the hope is surely that any potential temporary move becomes permanent with a transfer fee eventually.

In other news, Leeds could make a late move for another player, according to a recent report. Read more here.

Celtic: Danny Mills drops Ryan Christie verdict

Danny Mills believes that finances may have been a factor in why Ryan Christie chose to leave Celtic for Bournemouth this summer.

The Lowdown: Ryan Christie was an important player for Celtic

The 26-year-old was an important player at Parkhead during his six years with the Hoops, registering 85 goal contributions in 151 games, with 41 goals and 44 assists to his name [Transfermarkt].

Six trophies later, the Scotland international has recently moved to Bournemouth on an undisclosed fee [BBC], a transfer perhaps made easier due to him being out of contract at Parkhead in January 2022 [GIVEMESPORT].

Former Manchester City defender Mills has now weighed in with his thoughts on why Christie moved south of the border.

The Latest: Danny Mills drops his verdict on Christie’s Bournemouth move

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Football Insider, the 44-year-old claimed:

“I’m guessing the finances are a lot greater at Bournemouth than they are at Celtic. It was a bizarre situation with his contract being up in January of all times.

“He’ll be delighted. Bournemouth with the parachute payments will still be decent payers.

“It’s a chance for him to get into the Premier League. Is he good enough for the Premier League? Possibly not.

“Now he’s got an opportunity with a decent club under a good young manager to get them back into the Premier League. Look at it in a year’s time and it could be a really good move for him.”

The Verdict: Celtic will hope to supplement Christie’s influence with like-minded alternatives

The unusual stipulations surrounding Christie’s contractual situation, which Mills rightly labelled “bizarre”, perhaps made any potential exit easier to complete.

Nevertheless, the signing of Benfica winger Filipe Jota will help to soften the blow of the Scot’s departure in the recently-concluded transfer window.

Christie enjoyed a productive 2020/21 campaign for the Celts, picking up six man of the match awards [WhoScored]. He also recorded an average of 2.7 shots per game (second highest after Odsonne Edouard), showing his unwillingness to relent from an attacking perspective.

Moving forward, Ange Postecoglou will be hoping to supplement Christie’s influence with like-minded alternatives within his squad at Parkhead.
