Lots of Glasgow Rangers fans have been left buzzing over some news involving their B team.

As per the official website of the Ibrox faithful, the side progressed into the next round of the UEFA Youth League after a 2-1 win away at Hammarby in Stockholm, giving them a 5-1 overall aggregate win after beating them 3-0 at home.

Udal rolls back the years with bat and ball

A round-up of the latest Friends Provident Trophy matches on a wet day around the country, but there were wins for Middlesex and Worcestershire

Group AChris Whelan took 4 for 27 as Worcestershire breezed past Hampshire by 108 runs at New Road. Worcestershire’s 246 for 8 was a fragmented innings made up of three knocks of 31, by Moeen Ali, Gareth Batty and, at No.9, Ian Fisher. Yet in reply, Hampshire suffered an early collapse, sinking to 57 for 5. When Chris Benham was seventh-man out for 42, Whelan mopped up the tail as Worcestershire romped home with more than 11 overs to spare.Heavy Dublin rain prevented any play between Ireland and Leicestershire, the match abandoned without a ball bowled.Group BScotland made it five losses out of five with another comprehensive defeat, this time by Middlesex whose captain, Shaun Udal, turned in a fine allround performance in Edinburgh. Phillip Hughes, for once, failed to make a sizeable contribution in making just 11, and when Dawid Malan departed for just 7, Middlesex were beginning to wobble on 128 for 3. However, Eoin Morgan’s sublime one-day form continued unabated with another half-century and he was well supported by Udal who smacked a career-best 79, from just 46 balls, with five fours and a six. Chasing 281, Scotland lost their captain, Gavin Hamilton, for a sixth-ball duck and despite Ryan Watson’s 47, there was little else to worry Middlesex. Udal picked up 3 for 32 while Malan’s very part-time legspinners earned him 2 for 4 in a 138-run trouncing.Somerset reached 135 for 2 from 22 overs in their match against Warwickshire at Taunton, before rain ended any possibility of forcing a result. Marcus Trescothick continued his fine form with a 69-ball 84 while James Hildreth made 33.

Wolves fans slam Moutinho vs Leeds

Many Wolves fans have been left slamming the display of Joao Moutinho in their game away at Leeds United in the Premier League this afternoon.

The central midfield player got off to a bad start straight away, getting himself a yellow card within the first few minutes of the match, before Hwang Hee-Chan spared his blushes by grabbing an early goal for the visitors at Elland Road.

The Molineux faithful were particularly critical of Moutinho’s deliveries from set pieces, and his woeful pass accuracy of just 62 per cent is poor for a player of such tremendous technical ability.

Nonetheless, the Portugal international is an experienced player, and so he will now be looking to improve on this performance in the Midlands club’s next fixture, should Bruno Lage decide to throw him in the starting eleven again.

Why do rows erupt when Australia play Asia, asks Younis

Pakistan captain Younis Khan has asked why such controversies occurred when Australia were playing teams from the subcontinent

Younis Khan feels controversies arise when Australia play either India or Pakistan•AFP

Following on the controversy created by offspinner Saeed Ajmal saying Shane Watson tipped off the umpires about his bowling action, Pakistan captain Younis Khan has asked why such controversies occurred when Australia were playing teams from the subcontinent.Ajmal was reported for a suspect bowling action when delivering the doosra after the second ODI against Australia in Dubai. The offspinner, however, believed that Shane Watson might have played a role in drawing attention to the bowling action by speaking to umpires Asad Rauf and Billy Bowden during the second one-day international at the Dubai Sports City Stadium.”This is always happening with India and Pakistan and Australia,” Younis told AAP. “Why do we create all the time controversies? Why? It’s a fair game, you know. You’re talking about the doosra, ‘Why he bowl doosra?'”Why [shouldn’t] he [Ajmal] bowl the doosra? Because this is an art and especially Pakistanis and Indians, they have the art, so why [should it] not be allowed?” Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar was reported for a suspect action in Perth in 1999 while Muttiah Muralitharan was called for chucking on two separate tours of Australia.Australia captain Michael Clarke, however, played down the issue and said Watson did not speak to the umpires about Ajmal’s action. “Watto certainly didn’t go to the umpires and say a word, none of our players have approached the umpires and spoken about it,” Clarke said. “For us I think the way this tournament has been played, the spirit of the game has been fantastic. Both teams have got on really well, it’s been hard-fought cricket, it’s been so competitive, it’s been such a good tour so far.”Pakistan played Ajmal in the third ODI, which they lost by 27 runs to concede a 2-1 lead, and he continued to bowl the doosra. Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam said Ajmal would continue to do so until he was tested by the ICC’s experts.

Spurs dealt injury blow ahead of MUFC clash

Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a cruel injury blow ahead of their return to Premier League action this evening…

What’s the latest?

Nuno Santo’s side welcome Manchester United to north London and they will be looking to respond to last weekend’s defeat to local rivals West Ham United. Meanwhile, the pressure is on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who is reportedly fighting for his job, starting with tonight’s encounter.

The Portuguese head coach in the home dugout is far from out of the water himself, so a lot is on the line heading into kick-off. To make matters worse, Nuno will be without the services of Bryan Gil.

The 20-year-old gem was withdrawn just 25 minutes into their Carabao Cup Round of 16 win over Burnley on Wednesday night with a suspected hamstring injury.

Speaking ahead of the game, Nuno revealed (via football.london): “Bryan we have a problem with, he came out in the game. We are assessing. [Ryan] Sessegnon is not involved, [he is] still not in the group. [We have] normal knocks after the game. We still have the training session this afternoon then we’ll see who starts.”

Cruel blow

This will be a gutting setback to Gil but also Nuno, as the young Spaniard has the potential of being one of the big solutions to a major problem.

At the London Stadium on Sunday, the Lilywhites did not register a single shot, either on or off target, throughout the entire second half, even when chasing the game from the 72nd minute.

The lack of creativity was alarming. Spurs had 63% possession in the 45 minutes after the interval but failed to create a single big chance or key pass, as per SofaScore.

Gil is a player who can provide flair and tenacity in the final third, having averaged 1.7 crosses and 1.9 key passes per 90 in La Liga last season and been dubbed as someone with “unbelievable amounts of technique.”

The Red Devils have kept just one clean sheet in their last 20 matches across all competitions, so Harry Kane and Heung-min Son will surely be licking their lips at the thought of playing against an out-of-sorts United defence.

However, they really need support up top, and Gil could’ve provided the cutting edge. Therefore, not having him available will come as a cruel and annoying blow to everyone concerned with Spurs.

Nuno must be concerned that he may struggle to turn around their fortunes in attack without his 20-year-old summer signing available this evening.

AND in other news, Imagine him & Romero: Nuno could form scary Spurs duo by signing 6 ft 5 “Rolls-Royce”…

'Fatigue is a part of Indian cricket' – Dhoni

MS Dhoni, the captain of the Indian team which is defending the World Twenty20 title, has admitted that his players were tired after the IPL, but also said the hectic schedule was something his team was used to

Cricinfo staff29-May-2009Zaheer not fully fit yet – DhoniMS Dhoni has said that India’s pace spearhead Zaheer Khan hasn’t yet recovered from the shoulder injury he picked up during the IPL earlier in the month. “Zaheer is not 100% fit now, but I am hopeful he will be available for our first match,” Dhoni said before the team’s departure to England. India open their campaign on June 6, against Bangladesh in Trent Bridge, and Zaheer has a couple of chances to test his fitness before that, in the warm-up games – against New Zealand on June 1 and Pakistan on June 3.MS Dhoni, the captain of the Indian team which is defending the World Twenty20 title, has admitted that his players were tired after the IPL, but also said the hectic schedule was something his team was used to.”When you play so many matches you do get tired, after all it’s a human body. There was no time to rest for the players. But fatigue is a part of Indian cricket. Till now Indian players have done well with it.”Sachin Tendulkar, Gary Kirsten and Dilip Vengsarkar, the former chairman of selectors, have all spoken out against the packed schedule, saying the players could suffer injuries and be mentally fatigued. The 37-day IPL ended on May 24, and there’s only a 11-day gap before the start of the World Twenty20, raising concerns about players not getting sufficient time to rest. However, Dhoni also said the IPL had helped prepare for the tournament in England. “It [IPL] helped us a lot in terms of exposure and skills. So it was more beneficial for us.”Looking ahead to the tournament, Dhoni said the presence of so many part-time bowlers in the Indian squad was a huge advantage. “We have Rohit Sharma and Yuvraj Singh who have taken hat-tricks in the IPL. We also have Suresh Raina. Yusuf Pathan is there too,” Dhoni said on the eve of the team’s departure to England.”We have someone like Ravindra Jadeja with limited international experience but with high talent. He has played against some top fast bowlers and spinners in the IPL and has learned to handle pressure.”Dhoni also said the poor form of his openers Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag did not worry him. Gambhir scored 286 runs from 15 games and Sehwag 198 from 11 in the IPL. “Both the openers are very talented. As regards opening bowling combination we have not yet decided who will do it. You have seen spinners too opening the bowling in the IPL. Teams have to take gambles.”India will play two warm-up games – against New Zealand on June 1 and Pakistan on June 3 – before their opening game of the World Twenty20 against Bangladesh on June 6. The proceeds from their practice game against Pakistan will go towards the aid of those who were injured or lost their lives when the Sri Lankan team bus was attacked by militants in Lahore in March.
