Headingley crowd jeers and cheers Ponting

The boos when Ricky Ponting came out to bat weren’t as loud as the ones at Edgbaston•Getty Images

Boo-boo boys
The Western Terrace supporters didn’t follow the ECB chairman Giles Clarke’s no-booing edict when Ricky Ponting walked out to bat, but they weren’t too bad compared to Edgbaston. Ponting’s ears didn’t echo for long and he was soon blasting boundaries that were so smart even the sceptics clapped. He took 11 from a Steve Harmison over and followed with 17 in Graham Onions’ next offering. With the bars closed between the end of lunch and 3.30 pm, the people in the ground had to concentrate on the cricket and were fortunate to see Ponting’s crisp 78. As he exited, lbw to Stuart Broad, he raised his bat to the terrace, where many of the home supporters were standing to applaud.Headingley heaven
This is such an amazing ground for Ponting that his 78 was virtually a failure. In his three previous bats here, in 1997 and 2001, he picked up 127, 144 and 72. He’ll hope for better in the second innings.Good cheer
Until Ponting arrived the loudest roar had come with James Anderson’s single to get off the mark. The noise wasn’t to celebrate Anderson avoiding a duck for all of his 53 career innings, but for England’s innings reaching 100. It was that sort of day for the home fans, who watched their side fall behind at 4.31pm when Shane Watson took three off Stuart Broad.Opening statements
Australian openers are used to providing explosive starts in Ashes contests and Watson did his best impersonation of Michael Slater, while Anderson did an admirable job of being Phil DeFreitas. Anderson’s first two balls of the reply were short outside off and Watson cut both of them to the boundary, just like Slater did to DeFreitas at the Gabba in 1994-95.Mr Consistency
Watson has been a Test opener for three innings and is finding certain parts of the job incredibly easy. He hasn’t been bothered about reaching fifty, but as soon as he raises his bat the problems start. In Birmingham he posted 62 and 53 and today he departed lbw for 51, two balls after reaching the milestone.Prior injury
Matt Prior’s warm-up turned bad when he suffered spasms in his back this morning, an injury which threatened his place and delayed the toss by more than 10 minutes. Prior was able to regain his poise before the start, but missed out on a day of rest and, thanks to his side’s collapse, the No. 6 was batting within 90 minutes. While he wasn’t troubled too much during his team-high 37 not out, his keeping looked more painful and one early leg-side delivery went untouched to the boundary for four byes.Different umpires, same problems
Rudi Koetzen has left the series but the umpiring errors remain, starting on the first ball of the game. Ben Hilfenhaus ran in and delivered an inswinger that caught Andrew Strauss in front but Billy Bowden saw some doubt somewhere and shook his head, Koertzen-style. England’s innings also finished in doubt when Onions was given out caught by short leg off his arm guard. Asad Rauf was the mistaken man that time, although neither decision changed the pattern of the game. Rauf’s decision to judge Michael Hussey lbw after Broad’s inswinger from around the wicket was also open to debate.

Aston Villa: Gerrard wants Kamara and Patterson

Steven Gerrard has urged Aston Villa chiefs to land Rangers duo Glen Kamara and Nathan Patterson in January, 90min report.

The Lowdown: Huge January transfer kitty

Gerrard completed a move to Villa Park last Thursday, days after Dean Smith was relieved of his duties in the Midlands.

Prior to the 41-year-old’s switch being made official, though, reports believed that Gerrard has been promised a huge transfer kitty by billionaire owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens for the upcoming January window.

And it now appears as if Gerrard may well have two main targets in mind from his former employers in Glasgow.

The Latest: Gerrard urges NSWE…

90min shared a story on Sunday, with sources from both sides informing the site that approaches for several Ibrox stars are expected.

Within their report, they suggested that Gerrard has told Villa chiefs not to miss out on either Kamara or Patterson, believing they are both attainable in the New Year in a double deal that would cost more than £30m.

The Verdict: Solid targets…

Patterson can play as a right-back, left-back or even as a right-midfielder and has been watched by the likes of Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain recently, so pipping the European giants in the race for the 20-year-old could be a shrewd move in the long run.

Even if the Villans lose him to a ‘bigger’ club in the future, they would surely make a hefty profit given the teams mentioned as suitors.

Meanwhile, it seems as if Villa are fairly short of central midfield options with four senior options alongside two academy graduates, so Kamara could bolster that area of the pitch considerably.

The Finland international can play as a box-to-box or defensive midfielder and was already on Villa’s radar prior to Gerrard’s arrival, so a double deal over the coming months could be a wise move.

Kamara cost the Gers just £50,000 when he moved to Glasgow, so perhaps the chance to make an exponential profit could appeal to Ibrox chiefs.

Confiança renovada com convocação! Diego ganha moral no Flamengo

Moyes must find way to make Rice stay

West Ham have arguably some of the best players in the league right now, considering their top-six finish last season and current run of form seeing them just four points off topping the table.

Declan Rice has been one of the Hammers’ outstanding achievers in the side, and has become a household name after his impressive performances saw the star midfielder play in the Three Lions’ first international tournament final since 1966, with Teddy Sheringham comparing Rice’s movement to a “Rolls Royce”.

Playing in central midfield, Rice commands the ball with ease and leads his midfield with dominance, qualities that have helped West Ham achieve fantastic form and the opportunity to play European football this season.

West Ham teammates are in awe of the £63m-rated central midfielder’s quality and talent, with West Ham midfielder, Jarrod Bowen, singing the player’s praises recently in an interview;

“Dec’s gone on to another level,” Bowen told The Times, via the Standard. “The sky’s the limit for him. You saw it in the Euros, and you’ve seen it again this season, he’s starting to score more.”

David Moyes has also spoken highly of the 22-year-old, after West Ham valuated Rice at £100m, the Scottish manager claimed that the price tag was a ‘bargain’, after Manchester United took interest in the Summer.

Moyes told Sky Sports: “There was a bargain to be got with Declan at £100million. That bargain has now gone.”

With the young midfielder only developing further, showing attacking qualities and adding versatility to his game this season for West Ham with three goals and three assists in fifteen games so far from his central position, West Ham will have to pull something big out of the bag to keep hold of the rising star.

He has been linked with a whole host of clubs including Manchester United and Chelsea so it won’t be easy to make him stay in east London.

There is one way that Moyes and West Ham could keep hold of their talented midfielder, however, and that is by qualifying for Champions League football.

Every player aspires to play at the highest level and if the east London club can guarantee a Champions League spot for the first time in their history, there is more reason for the defensive midfielder to stay and compete on the biggest continental stage with the club he has made a name for himself at.

West Ham will be hoping to continue their amazing push for European football as the Premier League returns this weekend.

'Sacking Ponting would be completely unfair' – Sutherland

Cricket Australia’s chief executive has said sacking Ricky Ponting from the captaincy would be “completely unfair” and has praised his leadership through the Ashes

James Sutherland, Cricket Australia’s chief executive, has said sacking Ricky Ponting from the captaincy would be “completely unfair” and has praised his leadership through the Ashes. Australia lost The Oval Test by 197 runs and conceded their second Ashes defeat to England this decade.”Ricky’s had a very, very good series,” Sutherland told reporters. “He’s been under incredible pressure. I thought the dignity and poise that he showed in defeat was something that all Australians should be very proud of.”He also absolved the National Selection Panel (NSP) of responsibility for the defeat in England. One of the talking points in the post-mortem was the omission of the offspinner Nathan Hauritz, which captain Ricky Ponting and coach Tim Nielsen admitted was a blunder. Hauritz’s counterpart Graeme Swann proved why a spinner was so essential on that pitch as he picked up eight wickets. Sutherland defended the team management for the final line-up, implying that not all gambles are likely to pay-off.”I think everyone will be looking for people to blame. I don’t think that in any way we can hold the selectors accountable for us losing the Ashes,” Sutherland said. “At the end of the day, the players go out and do the business on the field.”Only six or seven months ago we had a fantastic series in South Africa where we beat the No. 1 team in the world (2-1 in the Tests) with a pretty similar line-up. The selectors were hailed for their selection, I guess in some ways the perceived risks they took in backing young talent. I think it would be jumping to conclusions to be blaming the selectors for this.”Sutherland said it would be unfair to criticise the decision to play a four-pronged pace attack at the expense of Hauritz, while it was clear that Australia effectively lost the game when they conceded a huge first-innings lead of 172.”That’s something that the selectors can explain for themselves,” Sutherland said. “Whether that had any bearing on the result of the game, who will know? We’ve lost the game by 200 runs, it’s a pretty significant defeat, and having a spinner in the side wouldn’t have helped us in the first innings, where we were bowled out for 160 and effectively lost the game.”With Australia free-falling to No. 4 in the latest ICC Test rankings, Sutherland admitted that plenty of work had to be done to reinstate their position at the top.”I don’t think Cricket Australia is under any illusions as to where this team is at. We’re definitely in a re-building phase after losing some of the best players to ever play cricket for Australia, and right now, what you get with a young and relatively inexperienced team is some ebbs and flows in performance.”We saw a little bit of that in the Ashes series. Our best cricket was very, very good, and our not-so-good cricket, in a couple of critical moments, were really the reasons why we let the Ashes slip.”Commenting on likely changes to the selection panel, Sutherland said at least one position in the three-man panel, led by Andrew Hilditch, will be converted to a full-time role.”The selection panel is to some extent, professional already. We have in recent times had a review, where we are now moving to a phase of becoming more professional in our approach to selection. It’s not just selection, it’s a matter of identifying talent and being partners in the development of talent and I think that’s part of the review and going forward we’ll be moving towards having at least one of the selection panel full time.”However, he ruled out the possibility of appointing the captain and coach to the panel, on the lines of what New Zealand Cricket adopted on Sunday. “The captain and the coach are always heavily consulted before matches but the structure that we prefer is for the selectors to be independent and making their own decisions and to be accountable for selection on that basis.”

A 11 vai estar lá – afirmou.

Controlar a ansiedade.

West Ham dealt Jesse Lingard transfer blow

As per reporter Jason Burt of The Telegraph, West Ham United have been dealt a blow in their quest to sign Jesse Lingard on a permanent deal.

The Lowdown: Lingard move edging closer?

Over the last few days, it’s safe to say there have been a few seismic developments in the ever-changing saga that is the 28-year-old’s future at Manchester United.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-developments-2/” title=”West Ham developments” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The England international snubbed a permanent move to West Ham on the promise of regular game-time under former Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Alas, after playing just 64 minutes in the Premier League this season, Lingard has now decided to shelve contract talks as he seeks a move away from Old Trafford in January (BBC).

In step West Ham, who are apparently ready to take full advantage, with a report from The Sun even believing that the 28-year-old is already ‘making personal arrangements’ to return to London. Lingard also dropped a teasing Irons transfer hint on Instagram, adding fuel to the fire of a possible reunion with David Moyes at the London Stadium.

The Latest: Burt shares Lingard twist…

However, sharing what he’s heard in a possible blow, Burt of The Telegraph has revealed a twist to the tale.

Indeed, according to his information, West Ham will attempt to re-sign Lingard in January, but the Red Devils may refuse to do a deal.

This is because they now regard Moyes’ side as top four rivals and are therefore reluctant to do business, potentially ‘worried’ that the midfielder could help West Ham to finish in the coveted Champions League qualifying spots ahead of them.

The Verdict: Blow for Moyes?

Going by this claim, Moyes would potentially have to wait till the summer of 2022 to sign Lingard as a free agent if his current club refuse to negotiate.

Amid the congested calendar, West Ham may need backing in the winter window if they’re to maintain their impressive start to 2021/22.

Lingard is seen as a big part of that plan with a report from The Evening Standard namedropping him as a transfer priority alongside the additions of a new striker and marquee centre-back.

After scoring nine goals and setting up four others in his 16 top-flight appearances on loan for West Ham in 2020/21, there is no question that his arrival mid-season would boost Moyes’ chances of finishing in the top four.

Having to wait until next summer to sign him on a free would be a dampener to their transfer plans but it remains to be seen whether Manchester United can afford to ignore the opportunity to do business while they could still get a fee for him.
