Lage must unleash Cundle tonight

Wolverhampton Wanderers head into Wednesday evening’s Premier League fixture in something of a slump of form, having won one of their last five league outings – scoring just one goal in this period.

Indeed, goalscoring has been something of a problem for the 45-year-old’s team so far this season, with only bottom of the league Norwich City having found the back of the net fewer times than Wolves’ 14 goals scored.

As such, with what is sure to be a challenging fixture away to Brighton & Hove Albion up next, it would be wise for Lage to finally unleash one of the club’s most promising up and coming talents at the American Express Community Stadium – in the shape of 19-year-old midfielder Luke Cundle.

Lage must unleash Cundle

Considering the fact that, over Ruben Neves’, Joao Moutinho’s and Leander Dendoncker’s 33 collective Premier League appearances this season, the trio have scored just one goal and registered one assist, it is evident that Wolves are lacking a truly creative outlet in the middle of the park – something which is undoubtedly a huge factor in the club’s woes in front of goal.

And, with Cundle highly impressing for James Collins’ U23 side, the young central midfielder could well be exactly what Bruno Lage’s first team side is missing at present.

Indeed, over his 43 appearances for Wolves’ U23s, the £180k-rated man has scored four goals and registered nine assists, in addition to being made the youth side’s captain.

Furthermore, Collins is clearly of the belief that the teenager has the ability to make a real difference in the middle of the park for Wolves’ first team, stating after the midfielder’s goal in a 2-1 win over Birmingham City U23s last month: “He’s got an outstanding brain and drives the game, he runs the game and dictates it which is a great skill.

“He’s intelligent, makes good decisions, can attack and defend and when you first see him, you wonder whether he could be a Premier League player because he’s slight and small.

“But once you’ve worked with him for a bit you can see how much of a good player he is. I’m delighted for him to get his goal because his performance deserved that. I thought everyone did well, but he was a real stand-out.”

As such, it would indeed appear highly advisable for Lage to unleash the player who he himself dubbed “amazing” – as well as suggesting that “he understands everything” – against Brighton this evening, as the youngster could well prove to be the solution to Wolves’ issues in front of goal.

Dhoni ton gives India 333-run lead

Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid missed out on centuries, but MS Dhoni scored his third, and led India to their highest Test score

How they were outMuttiah Muralitharan denied Virender Sehwag his triple-century•AFP

In the fourth over of the day, Muttiah Muralitharan got one to dip on Virender Sehwag. For a change Sehwag played in front of his body and scooped it back to Murali, who took the catch after a juggling act. Having added nine to his overnight 284, Sehwag became the fourth man to be dismissed in the 290s. And just after the standing ovation, the cricket came out of a trance. The ball started turning again, the bowlers bowled to a plan again, the scoring settled to a more human rate, and India moved – albeit slowly – to a big first-innings lead. Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid missed out on centuries, but MS Dhoni scored his third, and then left Sri Lanka just three overs to negotiate in the evening. Despite Dhoni’s late hitting, India scored only 283 runs today – Sehwag alone scored 284 yesterday.By the time Sehwag got out, he had put India 63 ahead. Dravid, after surviving an edge that the umpire missed, followed him, edging Chanaka Welegedara to the keeper having added 12 to his overnight 62. In between those wickets, though, Tendulkar played his shots, vertical-sweeping Murali twice just to the left of the keeper and pulling and driving against the turn for two other boundaries. By the time Dravid got out, Tendulkar had reached 22 off 26 but he slowed down after that, knowing he needed to make sure India batted just once. The slowing down was also because Rangana Herath and Murali found some rhythm. Murali even bowled a maiden – his first in 75 overs from the second innings in Ahmedabad. He kept VVS Laxman quiet by bowling from round the stumps, with a strong leg-side field, and India scored 49 runs in 18 overs between Dravid’s dismissal and lunch. In the last over before lunch, there was reason to cheer for Sri Lanka: the innings run-rate came below five.Post lunch, Tendulkar crossed 50 for the 97th time in Tests. Laxman opened up after a dry spell, taking 12 runs off one Welegedara over that included the drive from outside off to wide of mid-on. In the next over, though, Nuwan Kulasekara breached Tendulkar’s defence with an offcutter.Laxman continued punishing Welegedara and went from 27 in 64 balls to 50 in 79. But soon, looking for a big shot off Murali, he was done in by a doosra. The story of the first two sessions, though, was Herath. Easily the pick of Sri Lankan bowlers, he had the batsmen guessing, mixing his offbreaks and straighter ones to good effect. The carrom ball stayed in the batsmen’s minds too, but it seemed everyone – the umpires, his own keeper and slip fielders – had conspired against Herath.First the umpire had missed that edge off Dravid. Then Herath had a close lbw shout against Tendulkar when the batsman was 35. The umpire thought it would have missed leg, Hawk-Eye said it would have just hit. Then he had Yuvraj Singh groping as if blindfolded. When Yuvraj finally stepped out and missed another arm ball, Prasanna Jayawardene, arguably the best keeper to spin, couldn’t collect it. That miss cost them only 15, though, as Yuvraj sliced the same bowler to deep mid-off. But that wasn’t the end of Herath’s rotten luck: two balls later he got MS Dhoni to edge one and Mahela and Dilshan – at slip and second slip – saw it go through that little gap. And then, when looking to dismiss the tail early, he saw Prasanna drop Zaheer Khan.Murali, who was bowling with an injured right hand and using his feet to field, representing very much the beaten figure his team had been reduced to, enjoyed better luck. Harbhajan was bowled when going for a reverse-sweep, Kulasekara took a good tumbling catch to dismiss Zaheer. But again, Herath remained instructive of how the day went. Dhoni was on 50 when No. 11, Pragyan Ojha, walked in. Ojha contributed five to the unbeaten 56-run stand. Dhoni hogged the strike, choosing to score mainly in sixes. And he whiplashed Herath for five of them, three straight, one over midwicket, and the final one over long-on and out of the stadium. He also hooked Welegedara for one. In the whole record-breaking spree, the last one belonged to India: they scored their highest Test total, beating the 705 for 7 against Australia in Sydney.

Fernando Prass, Mayke, Edu Dracena, Juninho, Egídio, Tchê Tchê, Bruno Henrique, Moisés, Keno e Dudu fazem parte do esqueleto montado pelo atual treinador.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Selhurst Park protest

A section of Crystal Palace fans protested at Selhurst Park in the 3-1 win over Everton on Sunday, Matt Woosnam reports.

The Holmesdale Fanatics held up a banner after the club announced a partnership with cryptocurrency brand Socios, with a number of Palace fans giving their thoughts to the protest on social media.

Palace shared details last week on plans to launch a $CPFC Fan Token through Socios, which gives fans the chance to get involved in Eagles-related polls, games, competitions and quizzes.

All existing Palace season ticket holders and members will soon have the opportunity to redeem a $CPFC Fan Token for free, however, those not eligible will need to pay £2 a token.

Palace reporter Woosnam shared an image of The Holmesdale Fanatics and their banner regarding Socios on Twitter.

This is what these Eagles supporters had to say in reply, with many backing the protest, presumably due to Palace partnering with a cryptocurrency brand, which is by its very definition decentralised finance, and therefore non-regulated and very risky.

Rahane and Kukreja strengthen Mumbai

On another soporific day of cricket, Mumbai’s top order returned to form against a listless Hyderabad attack to seize control of the match. The biggest gain on a dominant day for Mumbai was the chanceless innings from Ajinkya Rahane

On another soporific day of cricket, Mumbai’s top order returned to form against a listless Hyderabad attack to seize control of the match. The biggest gain on a dominant day for Mumbai was the chanceless innings from Ajinkya Rahane, his first major contribution this Ranji season. He combined with opener Sahil Kukreja for a patient, unbroken 171-run stand to leave Hyderabad nervously glancing at scores from the match featuring their companions at the bottom of Group A, Himachal Pradesh. It had been a promising start from Hyderabad’s bowlers, troubling the Mumbai openers in the 10 overs before lunch. Vinayak Samant, the latest occupant of the merry-go-round at the top of Mumbai’s batting, faced a particularly torrid over from Ashwin Yadav – surviving a massive lbw shout, then barely getting to block a ball, which kept lower than he expected.Samant was gone three balls after the break, prodding at a delivery outside off giving wicketkeeper Ibrahim Khaleel a regulation catch. Hyderabad were buoyed by the wicket, and Ajinkya Rahane’s entry was greeted by a shout of (we’ll get him, he was talking a lot while fielding) from fast bowler MP Arjun at fine leg. There wasn’t to be any more breakthroughs for Hyderabad, though, as Rahane and Kukreja cut out the flash shots and unrelentingly pushed Mumbai forward. The pair was initially helped by a diet of legstump offerings, which were clipped towards midwicket for some cheap runs. Their running between the wickets was also sharper than Hyderabad’s batsmen, shown by the many threes that Mumbai picked up.The bowling started to flag in the face of the solid batting, with the lack of pace in the surface allowing the wicketkeeper to stand up to the hulking fast bowler, Shoaib Ahmed. Hyderabad shuffled their bowlers around to no avail. The frustration increased when their complaints about the condition of the ball were not heeded by the umpire – there were eight appeals from the home side before the ball was finally changed (for the second time in the innings).Things perked up just before tea as Rahane punched a full delivery past Arjun for four and followed it up with a cover-driven boundary to bring up his half-century. Soon after tea, Kukreja reached his fifty in even finer style, blasting Amol Shinde for a six over long-on.By now, both batsman were in fine touch and the run-rate started to make a slow ascent. Kukreja charged down the track, even to the fast bowlers, and worked them around for singles, while Rahane’s drives and flicks kept him moving along. Arjun’s annoyance at his lack of impact showed when he flung the ball back towards Rahane after a defensive push from the batsman. With no encouragement in the wicket for the bowlers, it seemed the most interesting question towards stumps was which of the batsmen would reach triple figures first. Inexplicably, though, both batsmen shut shop after moving into the 80s, playing out four maidens, after 25 consecutive scoring overs. The Mumbai top order’s efforts came after a 20-over spell of resistance from the Hyderabad tail. Overnight batsman Syed Quadri slapped the third ball of the day through cover to reach his half-century, but there was no rush to move the score along when batting with the lower order. Just as Mumbai were getting antsy at getting only one wicket in 19 overs on the day, a couple of run-outs ended Hyderabad’s go-slow at 266.Mumbai coach, Praveen Amre, termed those two run-outs “the best thing to see” but was even more thrilled with Rahane’s performance. “Everyone was looking for runs from Rahane,” he said, “and he looked rock solid and very confident. There was pressure on him because Mumbai isn’t a side that carries non-performers, the person who is sitting out is equally good.”Mumbai have been at 14 for 2, or worse, at least once in each of their matches this season, so the big stand was just what they needed. “They have given us a solid foundation, more than 150 runs partnership after a long time,” Amre said. “The top order had to contribute, their failure wasputting a lot of pressure on the middle order.”There was even more good news for him as Rohit Sharma’s shoulder injury proved to be not too serious. The only relief for Hyderabad, though, was that Manpreet Gony had shot out HP for 82 after Punjab had conceded a first-innings lead.

Queensland staged a dramatic recovery to hold thoughts of an outright win after New South Wales finished a poor day at 6 for 175, earning a lead of 158. The No.10 Ryan Harris blasted 84 off 62 balls to steal two first-innings points for the Bulls – a stunning comeback from 5 for 84 on Saturday – and in reply the Blues lost three of the main batsmen by 42.The former Australia openers Phillip Hughes (3) and Phil Jaques (17) were joined by Usman Khawaja (21) in their wobbly reply. Daniel Smith, the wicketkeeper, steadied the situation with 58 before he cut Ben Cutting to gully late in the day. James Hopes had also maintained the pressure on the visitors with 3 for 39 off 14 overs. In the Queensland innings Harris finished off the fine work of Chris Simpson (84) and Chris Hartley, but when the wicketkeeper departed for 125 they were 102 behind with two wickets remaining. With Harris playing the aggressor in his first Shield game after knee surgery, he and Ben Cutting smashed 90 before Cutting walked off with 57, his maiden first-class half-century.The points were secured for Queensland when Harris struck three fours in a row off the legspinner Steven Smith. Harris was dismissed after muscling 13 fours and two sixes, giving Mitchell Starc his fifth wicket. Starc had already picked up Hartley hooking and finished with 5 for 74 off 17.5 overs in a bowling bright spot for the Blues.
