Manchester United have not been active in the January transfer window in terms of new signings as of yet, but they have been linked with a number of players over the last few weeks, and the Red Devils seemingly lead the race in signing one Serie A star.

What’s the word?

According to Italian news outlet La Repubblica, United are in ‘pole position’ to sign Napoli midfielder Fabian Ruiz ahead of Liverpool and Arsenal, who are also rumoured to be interested in securing his signature.

The report suggests that the Serie A club would be interested in selling the 25-year-old, with his contract expiring in 2023 and doubts as to whether he will sign a new deal, giving Ralf Rangnick the opportunity to swoop in for him either this month or in the summer.

United have identified midfield as a key area to improve upon, with the likes of Declan Rice and Denis Zakaria already linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Ruiz joined Napoli from Real Betis in 2018 and has scored 20 goals and bagged 13 assists over the last three-and-a-half years for the Azzurri.

This season alone, the 6 foot 2 beast has scored five goals and set up his Napoli teammates three times in 20 appearances, which is impressive for a central midfielder and will have definitely caught the eye of the German coach back at Old Trafford, who will be looking for players who can provide a diverse skillset in his midfield to work alongside Bruno Fernandes.

The £48k-p/w star clearly offers a lot in an attacking sense, while according to SofaScore he is also reliable defensively, with a 92% pass accuracy and losing possession just 8.2 times per game. Comparing that to some of the regular starting midfielders at United, Fred has lost possession 11.6 times on average with an 83% pass accuracy this season, while Fernandes has an embarrassing average loss of possession 18.1 times per game and a pass accuracy of 76%.

It’s clear that Ruiz, who was hailed as “agile” by Hoffenheim defender Diadie Samassekou, can provide an upgrade when it comes to delivering passes accurately to build play and holding the ball in his possession much better than those currently starting in Rangnick’s side.

As a result, he could work well with Fernandes, allowing the latter to be more free-flowing in his preferred attacking role as the Spaniard covers the more defensive aspects of midfield, forming a scary duo which could cause problems for the opposition.

With Liverpool and Arsenal both speculated to be interested in the 25-year-old and currently in a much better position in the Premier League right now, Rangnick will have to work fast to ensure that Ruiz becomes a United player in the summer, instead of losing out on him to a major domestic rival.

What’s the word?

That’s according to Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who delivered a major update on the Gunners’ transfer plans on Twitter this week.

“Arsenal will definitely go for a new midfielder,” he said.

“Arthur has been discussed internally as reported here days ago, he’s in board/Arteta list together with 2 more candidates – but it’s not advanced with Juventus yet.

“Bruno Guimarães in January, more than difficult.”

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is in desperate need of bolstering his engine room this month, otherwise, the north London giants run the risk of ruining the Spaniard’s good work this season.

Indeed, the club finds itself back in the race for a top-four finish. Sat in fourth place with only a four-point advantage to seventh, the Gunners cannot afford any slip-ups in the coming weeks.

However, the 39-year-old is light on options in the middle – that’s because first-choice midfielder Thomas Partey and Mo Elneny are at the Africa Cup of Nations and the rarely-seen Ainsley Maitland-Niles has joined AS Roma on loan.

It really leaves him with just summer signing Albert Sambi Lokonga to partner Granit Xhaka, with players like Emile Smith Rowe and Martin Odegaard of the more attacking nature.

One injury or suspension to either of these names could cause Arteta plenty of problems.

Whether Arthur is the answer or not very much remains to be seen but it’s clear the club need reinforcements and it’s certainly hugely encouraging that they “will” find a solution, as Romano states.

Therefore, this latest development should leave the Emirates Stadium faithful absolutely buzzing heading into the rest of the month. It seems as if Arteta will be backed and that will only bolster their chances of securing a place in Europe next season.

Na tarde desta quinta-feira, o Flamengo conseguiu reduzir as penas do atacante Felipe Vizeu e também do zagueiro Rhodolfo, por conta da briga entre os dois na partida contra o Corinthians, na Ilha do Urubu, pelo Campeoanato Brasileiro.

Inicialmente, Rhodolfo havia pego de cinco jogos e Vizeu quatro. Após a redução da pena, o camisa 44 terá de cumprir duas partidas, mesma pena do centroavante.

Rhodolfo já cumpriu um jogo contra o Vitória, na última rodada do Campeonato Brasileiro, enquanto Vizeu jogou por ter conseguido efeito suspensivo. A punição vale apenas para o Brasileirão e Copa do Brasil do ano que vem.

O Procurador Geral Felipe Bevilacqua explicou a mudança na pena imposta nos dois atletas do Flamengo.

– Fatos que são de maior gravidade e polêmica, assim devem ser tratados de acordo com a proporcionalidade. Se esse adiamento fosse mantido traria prejuízo por ser a última rodada. A Procuradoria queria que o caso fosse julgado antes do fim do campeonato pelos princípios da celeridade e equilíbrio da competição.

Many Sunderland fans have been left buzzing over some transfer news that has emerged involving Jermain Defoe.

Speaking to talkSPORT, the free agent revealed that the Stadium of Light faithful is one of the options that he has to get back into playing football after leaving Glasgow Rangers earlier this month.

“My phone’s gone mad! If you’re phone’s ringing at 39 it’s a good thing!

“I’ve got a few options! Obviously the Sunderland one’s well documented.”

Defoe has been linked with a return to the Black Cats ever since his departure, and now he has admitted himself that it is an option.

Of course, he is still loved by SAFC supporters, after scoring 37 goals in 93 matches over all competitions across three campaigns (Transfermarkt), including a memorable winner at home to rivals Newcastle United in the Premier League in 2015.

Nonetheless, at 39 years of age, it would be a dream return to football for the Englishman.
