Rangers must complete James McAtee transfer

With a couple of days left until the January transfer window closes, Rangers still have time to strengthen their squad before the deadline.

One player that the reigning Premiership champions could look to bring in before the end of the month is James McAtee, who has been mentioned with a move to Ibrox in recent days.

Having already signed a young, exciting prospect from a top Premier League club in the form of Amad Diallo from Manchester United earlier this week on a loan deal until the end of the season, Rangers now have the chance to pull off a similar sort of transfer swoop, this time with a move for Manchester City’s McAtee.

As a product of City’s youth system, the 19-year-old has scored 42 goals and provided 26 assists in 84 appearances for the club across their senior and youth teams, highlighting how capable he is at scoring and setting up goals.

So far this season, in 15 league appearances for City’s under-23s, the £3.1k-p/w Englishman has racked up an impressive 14 goals and four assists, showing just how much of an attacking threat he can be from the midfield. That is something Diallo has also shown throughout his career so far from the right flank.

Labelled as one of the “exceptional” talents in City’s youth ranks by Pep Guardiola, McAtee could definitely benefit from a potential move to Rangers if he would be guaranteed regular game-time at Ibrox. He isn’t getting that in City’s first team, with just three senior appearances under his belt totalling 45 minutes.

With that in mind, it could definitely be worth Rangers making a late move to sign the teenager before the January transfer deadline hits, either on a loan deal until the end of the season like Diallo, or on a permanent basis if his current club would be willing to part ways with him.

However, with a number of Premier League and Championship sides also apparently interested in signing McAtee, perhaps Manchester City may feel more inclined to loan him out to an English club rather than Rangers, in order to acclimatise him with senior football in his native country rather than in Scotland.

Sussex seal fourth consecutive win

Sussex are already on course for an immediate return to the top flight of theCounty Championship after completing their fourth successive Division Twowin

29-Apr-2010
ScorecardSussex are already on course for an immediate return to the top flight of theCounty Championship after completing their fourth successive Division Twowin. The home side overcame some stubborn Leicestershire resistance led by veteranPaul Nixon to complete a 10-wicket win shortly after tea on the third day atHove.Nixon made 93 while skipper Andrew McDonald and Wayne White both contributed 47as Leicestershire were bowled out for 338 in their second innings. That left Sussex with a victory target of just 61 and they knocked off the runs in 13.3 overs with Michael Thornely making 29 and Chris Nash, who hit the winning boundary off White, unbeaten on 27.Sussex have now won two games by 10 wickets and the other two by more than 200runs and the early evidence suggests they are too strong for this division. Once again the key to Sussex’s victory was the persistence of their bowling attack, with Monty Panesar playing a big part.He made the breakthrough in his seventh over of the day when McDonald proddedto short leg after helping Nixon put on 95 in 25 overs for the fourth wicket. Nash has developed a habit of taking important wickets this season and when acting skipper Murray Goodwin brought the part-time off-spinner on just before the second new ball was due it paid an immediate dividend, Josh Cobb drilling Nash’s second ball back to the bowler for a simple return catch.Panesar struck again in the next over when Tom New was lbw offering no shot toleave Leicestershire six down and still needing eight runs to make Sussex batagain. When the new ball failed to bring a breakthrough Goodwin brought back Panesarand with the second ball of his new spell he ended Nixon’s obdurate innings whenhe was in sight of the 21st hundred of his career. The veteran left-hander had employed the sweep and reverse-sweep effectivelyagainst Panesar but missed this time and was lbw after resisting for four and ahalf hours. He faced 222 balls and hit nine fours and a straight six off Panesar.Panesar bowled beautifully to finish with three for 77 from 29 overs but it wasSussex’s seamers who polished off Leicestershire’s tail after lunch. Claude Henderson lost his off stump to Rana Naved shouldering arms and Corey Collymore then dismissed White in the first over of his spell.AJ Harris was last to go, bowled by Collymore as he prodded forward, leavingSussex with the straightforward task of completing a victory which maintainstheir 100% record in all competitions so far this season.

Durham’s captain, Will Smith, has tendered his resignation in the wake of his team’s innings-and-62-run defeat against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, and will be replaced by the 27-year-old former England wicketkeeper, Phil Mustard, with immediate effect.Smith succeeded Dale Benkenstein at the end of Durham’s Championship-winning 2008 season and managed to guide the team to their second title in a row the following summer. However, the 2010 campaign has not gone to plan so far, with the Nottinghamshire defeat being their first in first-class cricket for 21 matches, and Smith’s own form has suffered, with 114 runs in seven innings at 16.28 to date.”I am disappointed that things have not worked out as captain,” said Smith in a club statement. “I will remain fully committed to ensuring that the club continue to prosper under Phil’s guidance. He will add great spirit and character to the role and it is fitting that a North East lad is entrusted with it.””I’m honoured to have been offered the role of captain at the club where I came up through the Academy and have spent the whole of my professional career,” said Mustard. “I’m confident that with the help and support of my senior, experienced, team mates we’ll go from strength to strength.”Durham’s chairman, Clive Leach, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Will Smith for his hard work and success in the past season. I wish him well in his future career with Durham CCC. Appointing Phil was an easy task, he is totally committed to the Durham cause and I’m sure that with the support of the dressing room will take us forward over the coming months.”Head coach, Geoff Cook, added: “I’m delighted that Phil has accepted the role. This adjustment is an opportune time for us to kick start our season while at the same time giving Phil the chance to move his career up to the next stage.”

Newcastle: Clark and Lewis reject moves

Newcastle United defenders Ciaran Clark and Jamal Lewis face being left out in the cold for the remainder of the Premier League season, according to The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope.

The lowdown

The Magpies face some difficult squad decisions after signing five players this month and only managing to clear out three on loan – Freddie Woodman, Jeff Hendrick and Matty Longstaff. They will now have to clear space for the new arrivals by omitting players from their original 25-man Premier League squad.

Clark and Lewis appear to have been pushed further down the pecking order at St James’ Park by the additions of centre-back Dan Burn and left-back Matt Targett respectively.

The latest

According to Hope, the two defenders were given the opportunity to leave Newcastle before the end of the transfer window but said no.

Firstly, the journalist tweeted: “Understand Ciaran Clark & Jamal Lewis have turned down moves away from NUFC despite not being in the 25-man squad to be submitted to Premier League”.

He later added a follow-up tweet which outlined: “Ciaran Clark turned down loan move to Middlesbrough & Jamal Lewis to Birmingham.”

The verdict

Clark’s omission would probably be regarded as a bigger surprise given that he has played 13 top-flight games this season to Lewis’ five.

However, it’s striking how much the latter’s reputation has suffered at Newcastle. This was a player who Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool pursued before they moved on to Kostas Tsimikas in 2020.

Daniel Farke, Lewis’ former manager at Norwich City, said that the Northern Ireland international was capable of producing ‘magic’, but now it’s now hard to see a way back for him on Tyneside, and he may even end up having to move to the Championship in the summer.

Given that Newcastle are out of the FA Cup and have only league fixtures for the rest of the season, they’ll essentially be paying him £38.5k per week to train for the next few months. Hardly ideal.

Dedo do técnico

Yorkshire in charge after Lyth hundred

Adam Lyth and Jacques Rudolph helped Yorkshire reach 379 for 8 against Lancashire at Old Trafford

Neville Cardus would recall Roses matches played in such curmudgeonly attitude that the cross-Pennine rivals would deliberately score slowly just to frustrate their opponents, the Lancashire captain, Harry Makepeace, adopting a first-day mantra of “no fours before lunch” if he won the toss and the wicket was good. This historical mean-spiritedness was clearly lost on stand-in captain, Jacques Rudolph, as Yorkshire won the toss in Manchester. He and Adam Lyth, his opening partner, gathered boundaries with almost carefree abandon as Yorkshire responded to the opportunity to bat first on a dry, flat wicket to reach 126 without loss in the opening session.Lyth, the left-hander, is enjoying a prolific season at the top of the order, in contrast to last summer, when he was required to step aside to make way for Michael Vaughan and seemed unsure of his future. Here he reached 100 off 122 balls in a continuation of a marvellous run of scores interrupted only by a first-ball duck when these teams met at Headingley a month ago.Prior to that, he had scored 84, 85, 47, 142, 93, 133 and 98 off the reel and seemed to have a real chance, even at long-odds, of reaching 1,000 runs before the end of May. That duck and weather fit for ducks denied him the opportunity with the last day washed out completely, so perhaps there was an element of ridding himself of that disappointment in the exuberant celebration that followed as he moved from 99 to 100 with a legside single after his 17th boundary had taken him to 99. And, for a committed Yorkshire cricketer, there is nothing more satisfying than a century against the old enemy. This was Lyth’s first.Lyth, who has represented his country only at Under-19 level, must be close to a Lions call-up, at least. Disappointingly, he could not add to his hundred, though, glancing a ball from Tom Smith into wicketkeeper Luke Sutton’s gloves. The Whitby-born player still may be the first in the country to reach 1,000 first-class runs for the season, although Mark Ramprakash – out for 99 at Chesterfield – is running him close. The former England batsman has 959 to Lyth’s 953.Yorkshire lost their first wicket at 166 but continued to build, their workrate certainly more impressive than the team undertaking to dismantle the temporary stand from Sunday’s one-day international, the presence of which caused chaos before the start as cars poured into the ground in search of parking spaces that did not exist.Rudolph, willing at first to play second fiddle to Lyth with 31 runs to his partner’s 84 at lunch, became more expansive in time and reached 83 before following a lifting ball from Daren Powell to be second out, caught at second slip.Anthony McGrath, looking robustly prosperous without the cares of captaincy, had 61 to his name before playing on to the same bowler. Jonathan Bairstow, promoted to four in the batting with regular skipper Andrew Gale away with the England Lions, looked set to be the fourth half-centurion before a leading edge off Tom Smith flew to extra cover, where Simon Katich took a fine, diving catch.Gerard Brophy clinched the fourth Yorkshire batting point before a Glen Chapple inswinger trapped him in front. That wicket prompted a late comeback by Lancashire as Chapple found good movement in the air, his four wickets in the space of 26 balls including a breathtaking catch at point by Steven Croft off a sliced drive by Adil Rashid.Chapple and Smith were the pick of the Lancashire bowlers, left-arm spinner Simon Kerrigan toiling long for scant reward. They missed Sajid Mahmood, another chosen for a triangular one-day tournament of questionable value involving England Lions, India A and West Indies A.Martyn Moxon, Yorkshire’s director of cricket and a man not inclined towards reckless forecasting, believes Yorkshire are serious contenders for the title and on this evidence it appears to be a reasonable evaluation.
