Paulo Dybala can fill Spurs’ Eriksen void

Tottenham Hotspur could finally replace the void left behind by Christian Eriksen and it won’t cost them a penny, according to emerging reports.

Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness) claim that Spurs are one of two clubs that remain interested in a move for Paulo Dybala ahead of the summer transfer window.

It’s thought that the 28-year-old is ‘liked’ a lot by the north London outfit, which is hardly much of a surprise given sporting director Fabio Paratici’s connection, having held a similar role at the Serie A giants for over a decade.

Dybala has long been linked with a move to the Lilywhites, even coming close during the summer of 2019. A deal fell through late on due to image rights and it has never come to fruition since then.

However, that could be about to change with the Argentina international still out of contract in the summer, meaning Tottenham could clinch him without paying a transfer fee for his signature.

The arrival of Dusan Vlahovic has changed Juventus’ thoughts on keeping hold of Dybala with discussions over a new deal yet to his a breakthrough.

Spurs have long missed a creative no.10 that can help lessen the burden on the likes of Heung-min Son and Harry Kane, who are often left to do it all themselves up top.

Indeed, the pair scored 40 of their 68 league goals last season (58.8%) and it’s a similar story this season with the figure standing at 50%.

Players such as Tanguy Ndombele, Dele Alli and Giovani Lo Celso have all struggled to step up since the Danish playmaker’s departure over two years ago. All three also departed the club on deadline day, so Conte doesn’t really have any options in the role.

Dybala can be the solution.

Amid previous links to the Juve star, Italian football expert Conor Clancy backed Spurs’ frontline to be unstoppable with the addition of the attacking maestro.

“I feel like he’d be unstoppable with Kane because he’s not a number nine, so he’s got to be playing alongside a striker like that,” he said to Football FanCast.

Meanwhile, Dybala has also received praise from teammates, past and present, especially a particularly glowing endorsement from ex-Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey, who told The Athletic:

“I can just confirm that Dybala is an unbelievable player. He’s very gifted — a team player — and some of the things he’s done in training and some of the games this season has been quite breathtaking.”

Spurs new boy Dejan Kulusevski once claimed that the £45m-rated dynamo had a “magical left foot”, whilst Michel Platini likened him to Diego Maradona.

A career average of two dribbles and 1.6 key passes per game, via WhoScored, suggests that Dybala is more than capable of driving the ball into the final third before looking to provide that killer pass or attempt at goal.

If it’s only going to cost Tottenham in wages, then Paratici and co would be foolish to not try and finally bring Dybala to N17. He must be a top target in the summer as he could be the Eriksen-like figure that the Lilywhites desperately need.

Prior fifty inspires Sussex win

Sussex strengthened their grip at the top of the table as they beat nearest rivals Essex by 17 runs in their Friends Provident Twenty20 battle at Chelmsford

Sussex strengthened their grip at the top of the table as they beat nearest rivals Essex by 17 runs in their Friends Provident Twenty20 battle at Chelmsford. After posting a total of 174 for 5 on the back of a superb half-century from Matt Prior, Sussex restricted their opponents to 157 for 9. Prior dominated an opening partnership with Ed Joyce to such an extent that he scored 50 out of 65 runs before he drove David Masters to extra cover where Mark Pettini took a fine catch. Those runs came from only 27 balls and contained four sixes and four boundaries. Joyce, Murray Goodwin, Dwayne Smith and Andrew Hodd all reached the 20s to ensure Sussex set their opponents a testing target.Left-arm spinner Tim Phillips was the pick of the bowlers, conceding 22 runs in his four overs during which he claimed the wicket of Joyce. It looked as though Prior’s efforts would go unrewarded when Essex replied. With Pettini, who was restored to the side after a loss of form lead to him being dropped a fortnight ago, finding his touch without the burden of captaincy, Essex reached the halfway stage on 82 without loss.It was not until two overs and eight runs later that Pettini’s innings came to an end after he contributed 59 from 38 deliveries with the help of five fours and three sixes. But Essex’s hopes of recording a sixth successive win quickly evaporated as they lost their way.Pettini’s departure signalled a collapse that saw nine wickets go down in as many overs for 49 runs. Among them was young opener Jaik Mickleburgh who was run out for 32, but he struggled so much that he needed 42 balls to gather those runs while striking just two boundaries.A late flourish from John Maunders, who struck two sixes in an unbeaten 25 from 16 balls, gave the Essex reply an air of respectability but never threatened to prevent Sussex getting back on the winning trail.Their win came after two defeats and was backed up by some disciplined bowling and fine work in the field. Chad Keegan bowled with commendable accuracy while conceding just 19 in four overs, during which he gathered the wicket of Pettini, while Smith was also a model of accuracy while picking up one for 23.

-Hoje peço desculpas, não vou passar o time.

Journalist bemoans Leeds’ ‘brutal’ injuries

Speaking ahead of the visit to Aston Villa, journalist David Anderson has described Leeds United’s injury woes as ‘absolutely brutal’.

The Lowdown: Constant injury problems

The Whites have failed to replicate last season’s form in the Premier League, currently sitting 15th in the table and not even sitting clear of relegation just yet.

Injuries have undoubtedly played their part in Leeds’ struggles, however, with endless key men missing at important times, whether it be Luke Ayling, Kalvin Phillips or Patrick Bamford, to name a few.

It is vital that Marcelo Bielsa has a full-strength squad to call again in the near future, in order for the Whites to get back to their best at the crunch time of the campaign.

The Latest: Journalist rues fitness issues

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Anderson bemoaned the situation:

“I can’t remember [a situation like this before]. It was eight injured players before West Ham. It’s been absolutely brutal.”

Phillips and Bamford alone have missed a combined 28 games.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-33/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Big reason for Leeds’ struggles

While Bielsa and his players shouldn’t be blameless for some poor results, there is no doubt that they have been hampered by injuries from August onwards.

Only Illan Meslier and Stuart Dallas have started all 21 league games this term, while Phillips and Bamford have started just 17 between them, highlighting the issue running right through the spine of the team.

For that reason, it is unfair to judge Leeds too much in recent months, with a proper assessment making more sense between now and May, as the injuries begin to ease more.

Luckily, Adam Forshaw is expected back for the clash with Steven Gerrard’s side, while Junior Firpo and Phillips have both been pictured in training, so may not be too far away from action now.

O empate favorece o time visitante.

West Brom had a howler signing Zohore

West Brom have all but failed to secure an automatic Premier League promotion spot in the Championship following their relegation from the top-flight last season, with Steve Bruce needing to work miracles to just secure a play-off spot with the side continuing to lack goals and lack victories.

When you look at the number of goals the side have scored this season in comparison to the two teams in pole positions to secure automatic promotion at the top of the table, it’s no wonder they have fallen so far behind, with first-place Fulham scoring 44 more goals and second-place Bournemouth 15 goals ahead of the Baggies.

This inability to find the net has been the story of the season for the Baggies, with only Karlan Grant being able to deliver a goal tally in double figures so far with ten goals to his name, and Callum Robinson in second with six – both of which play out wide -whilst the strikers in the side have failed to deliver on every occasion.

One striker, in particular, has been a complete failure since he was signed by Guochuan Lai in 2019 in Kenneth Zohore.

He has featured just 23 times, where he has bagged five goals and provided one assist for the club in 835 minutes of game time over the last two years at the club. You can even consider his time out on loan to Milwall, where he again failed to make a consistent impact, scoring just three times in 19 appearances during his loan spell.

The £16.5k-per-week flop who was once dubbed “lazy” by former manager Neil Warnock, has been a disappointment for the side, and financially has become more of a burden when you consider the fact that West Brom paid £8m for him and now his market value is worth 83% less at just £1.35m according to Transfermarkt, only further adding to the absolute howler of a signing he has been.

Zohore has now found himself so far down the pecking order at West Brom when it comes to selection for the starting lineup, that after the loan deal with Jordan Hugill was cut short due to lack of output, he still wasn’t deemed good enough. 33-year-old Andy Carroll was even drafted in to take on the role in the striker position at the club, already outscoring both Hugill and Zohore combined in less than a month.

With all considered, the Danish 28-year-old has less than 18 months left on his contract and West Brom should do whatever they can to get him off their books and should accept any offer given to them by clubs potentially interested in the forward this summer.

AND in other news, Steve Bruce must now unleash “fearless” 20 y/o gem, he could change West Brom’s season…

Pace remains Pakistan's ace

Pakistani cricket may have taken a beating over the last few years but their ability to put out a genuinely world-class pace attack in any circumstance remains unaffected

Osman Samiuddin20-Jul-2010

Mohammad Aamer and Umar Gul have combined well with Mohammad Asif to form a potent pace attack for Pakistan•Associated Press

Pakistani cricket may have taken a beating over the last few years but their ability to put out a genuinely world-class pace attack in any circumstance remains unaffected. They’ve lost their last four Tests and have won only one of their last 18; their last series win came back in November 2006 but much of the blame can be put on a fragile batting line-up and poor catching. But since last year, with the emergence of Mohammad Aamer and the return of Mohammad Asif combined with Umar Gul at first change, they have regularly been able to create openings in most Tests they have played. Though they’ve played only five Tests together so far, the trio has picked up 59 of the 83 wickets to have fallen in those games; at Lord’s last week they took 15 of the 20 wickets. Now they head to Headingley to try and prevent a 14th successive Test loss to Australia, a bilateral dominance unmatched in modern Test cricket. Though the ground is no longer the swing haven it was in the 80s, it still offers help to pace bowlers and much of Pakistan’s hopes of avoiding a whitewash lie with the three.Michael Holding, the former fast bowling great, was commentating during the first Test and was impressed by what he saw, in particular of the youngest of the three, Aamer. “The impressive thing about Aamer is the fact that at 18, he has the ability to move the ball in both directions without any noticeable change in action or delivery, yet has the control to adjust so easily to left- and right-handed batsmen,” Holding told Cricinfo.Aamer picked up four wickets in the first innings, but was more erratic in the second, when he went wicketless. “The pace that he generates is good and consistent,” said Holding. “He is still a bit inexperienced as evidenced by his performance in the second innings when he started to experiment too much when he didn’t pick up early wickets but time will cure that.”Time is something Asif has served. Since his comeback to international cricket, following a virtual two-year absence on disciplinary grounds, Asif has picked up from almost precisely where he left off: he had 51 wickets in 11 Test at 23.13 until October 2007 and since then he has picked up 38 in 7 at 23.31. The strike-rates are marginally higher now, but the form has seen him shoot up to second place in the ICC rankings.Holding is impressed though he says the regular comparisons between Asif’s style and Glenn McGrath are misplaced. “Asif has done well and in this Test [Lord’s] and has been more consistent over both innings because he has been around a bit longer and has more experience,” Holding said. “He has enough pace when he puts it in to be disconcerting and has very good control.”I wouldn’t compare him with McGrath as I think there have been too many comparisons being made just because a bowler bowls medium pace and has good control. McGrath was taller and so able to get more bounce than most from closer to the batsman which makes a huge difference.”Gul’s second-innings performance of 4-61 was arguably the most significant of the three for he has struggled to realign his strategy to Tests since becoming the game’s leading Twenty20 fast bowler. Coach Waqar Younis highlighted a chink in the run-up during the Tests in Australia and Gul struggled at times with it during Lord’s, bowling 12 no-balls in all. But he periodically relocated the lengths that made him such a Test prospect in his early years and the bounce and seam movement he generated from that troubled Australia, never more than in a fine second evening spell.Holding warned, however, of the continuing impact the shortest form of the game will have on fast bowlers, a warning seconded by Imran Khan at the MCC’s Cowdrey lecture. “I’ve always thought Gul was a good prospect. I don’t watch that [Twenty20] format but it is obvious these days that fast bowlers will not last very long because of the amount of cricket they’re being asked to play.”They become medium-pacers at an early age, long before fast bowlers of the past because they just can’t physically manage the workload. There is no way of managing the fast bowlers these days. It’s just a fact that the amount of cricket they are being asked to play, they cannot last. Very soon, no one will bowl fast, they will all bowl at 80 odd miles an hour and try and last for a decade if possible.”
