Collins hurts Glamorgan's hopes

Former West Indies seamer Pedro Collins did the damage in more ways than one as Middlesex had the better of the first day

16-Aug-2010
ScorecardFormer West Indies seamer Pedro Collins did the damage in more ways than one as Middlesex had the better of the first day of their County Championship clash with Glamorgan at Cardiff. Collins not only finished with figures of 4 for 55, as Glamorgan were bowled out for 198, but he was also responsible for breaking Jamie Dalrymple’s thumb on his right hand. The Glamorgan skipper is almost certain to miss the rest of the season.Responding to Glamorgan, who won the toss, Middlesex finished the day on 68 for 2 in their first innings, 130 behind with Scott Newman on 40. The leaders were soon in trouble after electing to bat when Mark Cosgrove went for a first-ball duck edging the perfect out-swinger from Collins behind. And matters did not improve for the Welsh county as they found themselves 8 for 3. Tim Murtagh broke through twice in consecutive overs. First, Gareth Rees was caught at short leg by Scott Newman and then Ben Wright edged to Dawid Malan at first slip. Murtagh produced a fine opening spell of 9-6-10-2.Dalrymple and Tom Maynard set about some repairs in a stand of 50 for the fourth wicket. Maynard was the dominant partner striking seven boundaries in his 37. But just before lunch the 21-year-old was adjudged leg before playing round his pad.Though Dalrymple and James Allenby attempted a second rescue mission either side of lunch the wickets carried on falling at regular intervals. Allenby was caught behind from a Collins out-swinger.From 90 for 5 Glamorgan were soon 117 for seven as Collins struck again twice in three balls claiming the wickets of Mark Wallace, who was out tamely, caught at fine leg, and Dalrymple who edged a lifting ball to Neil Dexter at second slip. It was a double blow for Dalrymple, as that was also the ball which broke his thumb.Skipper Dexter got in the action to take the wickets of James Harris, caught by wicketkeeper John Simpson standing up, and Robert Croft, well caught in the gully by Owais Shah. But after that the tail wagged impressively as Cosker and Harrison compiled their record stand.Harrison hit Dexter over long on twice for six and four as Glamorgan reached 150 and when the partnership went past 60 they had set a new record for the county beating the 10th-wicket partnership by George Lavis and Wilf Jones at Cardiff Arms Park in 1960.Glamorgan’s innings came to a close from the first ball after tea when Harrison was caught at point off Murtagh to leave his side stranded two runs short of a batting point.Glamorgan dropped both Newman, on 12, and Simpson at fine leg and gully respectively before fighting back to have Middlesex 39 for 2. First Simpson was leg before to Allenby and Shah was caught behind off James Harris.

Wolves handed injury boost ahead of NUFC

Wolves are back in Premier League action once again tomorrow night with an away clash against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.

Looking ahead to this latest match, it seems as though Wolves manager Bruno Lage may have been handed an early injury boost that could lift his side’s chances of securing a positive result against the Magpies.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from the Daily Mail, Newcastle midfielder Joe Willock is a doubt to play in Friday’s showdown having picked up a knee issue.

Speaking in his latest press conference ahead of tomorrow’s clash, Toon manager Eddie Howe had this to say about the situation.

He said: “Joe Willock has had a slight knee problem for a couple of weeks. He’s become a bit more aware of it in training so it’s something we need to stay on top of. We’ll make a late call on him.”

Great news for Wolves

Having appeared in all but five of Newcastle’s 30 league games so far in this campaign, the midfielder is certainly an important figure for his side.

In those appearances, Willock has found the back of the net on two occasions, both coming in February against West Ham United and Brentford.

To highlight how significant the Englishman is from an attacking point of view, he has managed to rack up an average of 1.3 shots per game, the fifth-highest of any Toon player.

Also, only Allan Saint-Maximin (4.3) has a higher average of dribbles per game than Willock (1.4), showing how tricky he can be on the ball.

In addition to this, the 22-year-old has made a total of 43 shot-creating actions this season, the fourth-highest of any player at the club.

Taking all of this into account, if the former Arsenal youngster were to miss the match against Wolves, this would surely give the home side’s attacking force a blow, which would only benefit the Old Gold.

Having won their previous league game against Aston Villa, increasing the points gap between their Midlands rivals to 13 points, a victory over the Toon could put Lage’s side into sixth place before Manchester United and West Ham play over the weekend.

Age no excuse if proved guilty – Pakistan associate manager

Shafqat Rana, Pakistan’s associate manager, has said that Mohammad Amir’s age should have no bearing on possible punishment if the spot-fixing charges leveled against the 18-year old seamer are proved to be true

Shafqat Rana, Pakistan’s associate manager, has said that Mohammad Amir’s age should have no bearing on possible punishment if the spot-fixing charges leveled against the 18-year old seamer are proved to be true.”Even if he is so young, it doesn’t matter,” Rana said ahead of Pakistan’s second Twenty20 against England in Cardiff. “They [cricket fans] want everything in the best spirit of the game. I think it should be the same with everybody, if he breaks the law.”Rana’s remarks came a day after ICC chief Haroon Lorgat was quoted as saying of Amir’s case, “In my own honest personal view, yes I would think age would come into account in these matters. But that is something the independent tribunal will have to decide upon.”Amir is the youngest of the three Pakistan players suspended by the ICC following the NOTW sting operation centred around spot-fixing. Speaking in Cardiff ahead of the second game, England allrounder Stuart Broad said age should be no excuse in dealing with the guilty since the ICC provided adequate education on cricket corruption. “With the amount of books I’ve got from the ICC at home, full of information, there’s certainly no excuse as players,” Broad said.”As soon as you come into the England team, the ICC gets hold of you; you’re put through this video, which is very watchable, very clear – it takes you back to when you were five or six, that’s how clear it is. It outlines everything you’re not allowed to do, everything you are allowed to do.”Broad’s opinions were echoed by Nasser Hussain, the former England captain. “If it was a first offence maybe we need to be lenient,” Hussain wrote of Amir’s case in the , “but if there have been other alleged misdemeanours then the game needs to be very tough with him, too. He is old enough to know right from wrong.”Amir will be facing scrutiny not only from the ICC’s tribunal but also Pakistan’s tax authorities who will reportedly probe the finances of Pakistan’s cricketers, a move endorsed by both Rana and limited-overs captain Shahid Afridi. “It was there in their (the government’s) mind before we came over,” Rana said about the tax probe. “I think it’s a good thing, it will open things out so they (the players) will be very careful.”

Tottenham: Spurs plot Eriksen move

As per Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur are lining up a move to bring Brentford midfielder Christen Eriksen back to North London in the summer transfer window.

The lowdown: The show must go on…

Following a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, Eriksen was unable to play for Inter Milan in Serie A and a stellar career was in danger of being prematurely cut short.

However, following a spell training with former club Ajax, the 30-year-old was signed by Thomas Frank at Brentford during the January window as a free agent.

Since then, the creative Dane has made an instant impact in the Premier League and made a successful return to the international fold, heightening speculation over a possible major summer move…

The latest: Spurs eyeing reunion

According to a recruitment source at FI, Tottenham are believed to be ‘keeping tabs’ on Eriksen ahead of a swoop at the end of the season.

It’s claimed that the Lilywhites are ‘among’ a host of English top-flight clubs monitoring the 111-cap Denmark star who was once hailed as ‘special’ by Mauricio Pochettino.

Set to become a free agent in July when a short term deal expires at Brentford, ex-Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte could reunite with Eriksen at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium having selected the creative ace on 60 occasions whilst together in Italy.

The verdict: Make it happen

Sentiment aside, the Dane’s quality has been evident for all to see by his sensational return to football and bringing him back to Tottenham for free would be a superb piece of business by recruitment chief Fabio Paratici.

Since signing for Brentford, Eriksen has scored once and provided two assists in six outings – earning an outstanding 7.47 average SofaScore rating in the process, making three big chances, producing 1.8 key passes a game and delivering 37.5 (81%) accurate passes on average per appearance.

Not only a player of undoubted ability, but the three-time Danish Footballer of the Year also possesses unrivalled experience that would be of great benefit to Conte’s fledgling squad as the Italian looks to take Spurs to the next stage of their development.

Klinger makes hay, Hayden clings on

Firdose Moonda presents the moments of the tournament from the Champions League Twenty20 2010

Firdose Moonda28-Sep-2010

Michael Klinger had never made a Twenty20 half-century until this tournament, and promptly scored three of them•AFP

Innings of the tournament
For a large part of the tournament, he was the man leading the golden bat race. Michael Klinger scored three half centuries for South Australia, two of them while chasing. His best effort was the 78 off 48 balls he smashed against the Lions in Centurion. Klinger had not scored a half-century in 20-over cricket before that day and a combination of excellent exploitation of the short ball, perfect placement and crafty footwork saw him sail over the 50 mark. He shared in two century opening partnerships in the competition, so his sidekick, Daniel Harris gets an honorary mention.Spell of the tournament
Albie Morkel produced two gorgeous, bouncy overs for the Chennai Super Kings against the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the semi-final. He had the ball swinging like the 60s and Manish Pandey didn’t quite know what to do with the away movement. At one point, there were three slips in position. Morkel picked up the wicket of Robin Uthappa with the final ball of the second over to finish the spell with figures of 1 for 13.Catch of the tournament
Plenty of great plucking in this tournament made this one a difficult pick. Jean Symes and Johan Botha get special mention but the clutch that cut it was Matthew Hayden’s spectacular steal against Central Districts in Port Elizabeth. Mathew Sinclair’s reverse sweep off Muttiah Muralitharan required an acrobatic leap to the right from Haydos at first slip which he pulled off in fine style. He had a lean run with the bat and is fast approaching 40, but Hayden’s powers of anticipation have not dimmed.Surprise package of the tournament
The Warriors had laid claim to their first two pieces of silverware since the franchise system began on their way to qualifying for the Champions League. They fancied themselves for a final four spot but to advance to the decider in such emphatic fashion was surely unexpected. Davy Jacobs became everybody’s favourite player with his no-fear brand of batting and easy-going leadership style. The home boys won the hearts of many and even though they lost in the final, they provided more than enough evidence that something very special is stirring in the Eastern Cape.Thanks-for-coming of the tournament
Guyana, Central Districts and Wayamba provided a trio of whipping boys for the other teams. Between them, they posted the five lowest totals in the competition and conceded the two highest scores. Most of the time their hearts didn’t seem in it, although they told us they were, so even when the Sri Lankans thrashed the New Zealanders by 74 runs, no-one cared.Heartwarmer of the tournament
The unfancied Highveld Lions upset the Mumbai Indians in the tournament opener, to leave audiences aghast. When Robbie Frylinck bowled the last ball, to hand the Lions victory by nine runs, the team stormed the pitch to the sound of K’Naan’s . The union that has been so troubled by internal strife and so plagued by failure were united for those few minutes by victory.Best atmosphere of the tournament
The Centurion crowd at the semi-final between Warriors and the South Australia Redbacks. A hen party was clucking away in the grandstand complete with pink mining helmets for the girls and a colourful, fake, Mohican for the bride-to-be. That bunch was not even nearly as raucous as Redbacks’ WAGS in the president’s suite, cheering on their men, even when it was obvious that they were going home. By that point, the rest of the crowd threw their weight behind the South African side and started a chant, “Bye, Bye Redbacks.” The Eastern Cape found a home in Centurion.Song of the tournament
Enrique belted out at the opening ceremony but that song in its cheesy entirety was not heard again. There was a masala mix version of it, muddled with Taio Cruz’s . Catchy, but not quite the best beat of the event. For a tune that screams “bring out your pom-poms,” a lesson in spelling and a healthy blend with something that sounds like Bhangra, the Chennai Super Kings theme song is the one that rocked.Advice of the tournament
Someone needs to tell Ravi Shastri that when he is holding a microphone, he doesn’t have to shout.Quotes of the tournament
“This is a massive achievement for the Eastern Cape. The last 18 months have been unbeliev…., unbeliev… . I don’t even know what the question was.”
“I’ll just go make a cup of coffee.”

O próximo jogo será quarta-feira, contra o Fluminense, no Nilton Santos.
