Thakor fifty helps turn day around

Shiv Thakor made 75 and Matt Boyce 55 as Leicestershire recovered from 52 for 5 to enjoy the better of the opening day at Grace Road

A stand of 125 between Shiv Thakor and Matt Boyce put Leicestershire in the ascendency on day one at Grace Road. The pair made half-centuries to stage a recovery from 52 for 5 before two late wickets as Gloucestershire came out to bat for nine overs made it Leicestershire’s day.Gloucestershire looked like taking control and Benny Howell claimed career-best figures of 5 for 57 as Leicestershire were dismissed for 250. But from where they were in the morning session, Gloucestershire will feel they let an opportunity slip.Thakor and Matt Boyce sparked comeback to claim two batting points. Thakor top scored with 75 and Boyce also made a half-century before veteran Claude Henderson thumped 33 off 30 balls. But it was 24-year-old allrounder Howell made the biggest impact of theday. Before this match Howell, in his second season with Gloucestershire, had taken only nine first-class wickets with a best return of 2 for 37 against Northamptonshire last season. He had bettered that by lunch, picking up 3 for 17 runs in a superb eight-over spell. The home side were already in difficulties when Howell came on as first change. Michael Thornely was bowled by Will Gidman with the second ball of the day and Niall O’Brien soon followed after edging behind off David Payne.Howell, finding some away swing with his medium pace bowling, then hadRamnaresh Sarwan caught at gully, trapped Ned Eckersley lbw offering no shot to a ball that straightened before bowling Josh Cobb off an inside edge. With half the side out in the space of 22 overs, Leicestershire were staring down the barrel. But for the second Championship game in succession, Thakor and Boyce dug in to bring some respectability to the batting. They stayed together for 44 overs, Thakor reaching his 50 off 110 balls with seven fours plus an all run five. Boyce went to his half-century off 120 balls with four boundaries. But both fell quickly after tea. Howell had Boyce caught at slip and Thakor was also caught low down by Hamish Marshall cutting at a ball from offspinner Jack Taylor.Howell then picked up his fifth wicket when Jigar Naik edged to slip butHenderson’s quick-fire 33 brought some valuable late runs. And the day ended well for Leicestershire, with Robbie Williams trapping Chris Dent lbw and Ollie Freckingham having Dan Housego caught behind asGloucestershire closed 219 runs behind.

Pakistan focus on fitness in Abbottabad camp

Pakistan’s cricketers focused primarily on fitness and batting skills during the six-day training camp in Abbottabad, which concluded on Wednesday, ahead of the Champions Trophy in England. The players returned to their hometowns and will reassemble on Monday in Lahore before departing for Scotland. The weather in Abbottabad, at an altitude of 1260m, remained pleasant throughout the camp and the players took part in some practice matches. Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq said the players had ample time to gel.”The purpose of coming here was that the team should train without any distractions,” Misbah said. “It’s a bit cooler here and the pitches had offered some movement for the batsmen to cope with.”Misbah also said the players needed to pay more attention to fitness. “We are seeking improvement in fitness, at least close to the requirements of international cricket. We are not there yet but we are trying to hit the benchmark.”During the camp, you must have seen that fielding is directly associated with your level of fitness and we are working on both,” Misbah said. “We understand that if your fitness and fielding does not improve you will suffer in international cricket, especially in T20 and one-day cricket.”Misbah said the team’s defeats in South Africa had made his players mentally stronger. “In South Africa we played some tough cricket in tough conditions and the boys will benefit from it mentally. You get ready to face difficulties and I think our performance will be good in the Champions Trophy.”Opening batsman and T20 captain Mohammad Hafeez had rigorous net sessions, mainly working on his technique against seam bowling. Hafeez had a poor tour of South Africa, where he scored only 43 runs in the Tests and 118 in the ODIs, and was dismissed by Dale Styen on six occasions.Pakistan’s coach Dav Whatmore said it was more of a skills camp. “Obviously this is not the northern hemisphere, but it’s a destination where we can achieve a few things,” he said. “This is not a conditioning camp, this is skills camp because we are close to the competition. We are pretty happy with what we got, we had some bad (rainy) weather on Sunday but we managed to get 70 overs for ample match practice.”Pakistan had lost the Test series in South Africa 3-0 but fared better in the one-dayers, losing 3-2. “In the last series we were one game from winning the series,” Whatmore said. “We are okay, we just needed to improve on a couple of areas and we would have been a series winner.”Chances in the Champions Trophy is difficult to predict accurately, but I tell you what this team has got the ability. If we play to our potential we can put pressure on any team. Our goal is obviously to win it.”Pakistan will play two ODIs each against Scotland and Ireland later this month before taking on West Indies, South Africa and India in its Champions Trophy Group B matches.

LANCE!

Derbs hold on after Ponting's 192

Surrey had to settle for a draw from their Championship Division One clash with Derbyshire despite the best efforts of Chris Tremlett and Ricky Ponting

Surrey had to settle for a draw from their Championship Division One clash with Derbyshire despite the best efforts of Chris Tremlett and Ricky Ponting, who fell eight runs short of a double-century on the final day.Ponting was run out for 192 from 271 balls, the highest score by a Surrey player on first-class debut, before the visitors declared 101 runs ahead on 553 for eight. Tremlett then set the alarm bells ringing in the home camp when he reduced them to 105 for 3.When Tremlett took his third wicket by bowling Chesney Hughes for 68, Surrey sensed there was an outside chance of victory but Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Wes Durston stood firm, adding an unbroken 59 before the teams shook hands just after 5pm.It might have been different if Surrey had taken early wickets to put the division’s bottom side under pressure but Hughes and Billy Godleman shared Derbyshire’s highest opening stand of the season, 76 in 19 overs, before Tremlett broke through.Surrey had started the day 90 runs behind but Ponting and Steven Davies scored freely on another sunny morning to open up the possibility of pulling off an unlikely victory. Ponting reached his 150 when he cover drove Mark Turner for his 18th four and Davies also kept the scoreboard ticking at five an over by completing his half-century off only 46 balls. The fifth-wicket stand was worth 105 in 20 overs when Davies was well caught at deep midwicket by Godleman off David Wainwright for 59, but Gary Wilson helped Ponting maintain the scoring rate before the 38-year-old former Australia captain’s superb innings ended in the last over of the morning.Ponting set off for a sharp single but was well beaten by a direct hit at the bowler’s end from wicketkeeper Richard Johnson. Despite that, it had still been a good session for Surrey with 155 runs coming in 29 overs.Gary Wilson then made 45 from 48 balls before Gareth Batty declared but Hughes and Godleman took Derbyshire some way down the road to safety before Tremlett gave the game a final twist. He trapped Godleman lbw for 28, bowled Wayne Madsen with one that kept low and then beat Hughes for pace to effectively leave Derbyshire on 4 for 3 but Chanderpaul eased the nerves in the home dressing room by driving Zander de Bruyn for three fours in an over.Tremlett ended with match figures of 8 for 133, which was an excellent effort on a pitch where more than 1,000 runs had been scored, but the result means both Surrey and Derbyshire are still without a Championship victory.

Bhuvneshwar, Rohit carry India to final

Bhuvneshwar Kumar ended the Sri Lanka chase early with a spell of 6-1-8-4, his best international figures, to take India to the final

The Report by Abhishek Purohit09-Jul-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsRohit Sharma fought hard on a difficult surface to remain unbeaten on 48•AFP

After a four-and-a-half hour rain interruption, Sri Lanka had ten wickets available over a truncated 26 overs to chase 178. India needed to restrict Sri Lanka to 167 or below to make the final ahead of West Indies. In an ideal Twenty20 world, this was a situation loaded in favour of the chasing side. The Queen’s Park Oval pitch, with patches of green spiced up by all the rain, was an ideal Test bowler’s paradise, though. And Bhuvneshwar Kumar used it to perfection, ending the chase early and taking India to the final with a spell of 6-1-8-4, his best international figures.Bhuvneshwar got the ball to do so much, even survival became a lottery, leave alone a chase that began at an asking rate of close to seven an over. Some moved in, some moved away, some hit a green patch and bounced extra, with Bhuvneshwar’s impeccable control forcing the batsmen to play at almost everything. It was only his 16th ODI, but Bhuvneshwar has already built up a reputation for striking early in his spell. Again, he did not disappoint.Upul Tharanga flashed to the slips in Bhuvneshwar’s second over, Kumar Sangakkara got a first-ball shocker of a leg-before decision, Mahela Jayawardene could not keep a cut down, and Lahiru Thirimanne hit an airy drive. In no time, Sri Lanka were 31 for 4, and India already had the final within their sights. Of course, it was the asking rate that made the batsmen play all those strokes, but against the combination of Bhuvneshwar and the pitch, the attempts were doomed to fail. The spinners found generous help from the pitch as well, and made sure there was no fightback from the Sri Lanka lower middle order. The margin of the win showed just how futile a T20-style chase can be on a difficult pitch. This pitch was so difficult it forced even the usually flashy Rohit Sharma to play the survival game. A battered and struggling Rohit fought the conditions, his own lack of touch, and a disciplined Sri Lanka attack but still hung in to build a base for India. But we will never know what could have been in this Rohit knock as the rain terminated India’s innings at 119 for 3 in 29 overs.Though the normally free-flowing Rohit’s grind wasn’t easy on the eye, it was far more refreshing to see him unwilling to fall to a soft dismissal, though he benefited from a dropped catch off Lasith Malinga when on 11.Despite West Indies losing both their games on the same ground after choosing to bowl, Angelo Mathews had no hesitation in doing the same. And his attack bowled far better than West Indies had, which was highly commendable, considering they had sent down 41 overs a day ago against the hosts. There was swing, seam, sharp lift, and the occasional low bounce.Rohit was beaten several times by the movement initially, but to his credit, he played the original line close to his body. For some time, Virat Kohli looked even more uncomfortable than Rohit had and even played out a maiden to Malinga for the first time.Kohli slowly started to come to terms against the fast bowlers and put away the rare wide delivery. Perhaps the pitch made Kohli hesitant to get forward against spin as well, and led to his downfall, when he went back and was caught in front by a flighted Rangana Herath slider, cutting short a second-wicket stand of 49 in 14.1 overs.Rohit, meanwhile, continued to find it hard, inside-edging onto the box, and taking blows on the glove. He did slog-sweep Herath for six but the left-arm spinner hit back in his next over, when another India batsman played back to him. This time, Dinesh Karthik got a turner that spun away to hit his off stump. India were three down now, making it even more important for Rohit to not give it away. As it turned out, though, he had already done enough, after which Bhuvneshwar took over.
