Fans' goodwill remains – Cook

Alastair Cook believes the English public remain largely behind the team despite the events of the winter and its dramatic fallout.

Alastair Cook believes the English public remain largely behind the team despite the events of the winter and its dramatic fallout. After a somewhat bitty start to the international season with a rain-effected game in Scotland then the T20 defeat to Sri Lanka on Tuesday, which Cook was not involved in, he now gets hold of the team for his first extended run since the one-day series in Australia, which resulted in a 4-1 defeat and, momentarily at least, led to Cook considering his future.Others did pay with their positions with Andy Flower and Kevin Pietersen the highest-profile casualties. Pietersen’s absence continues to be a source of much debate especially on social media, fuelled by Giles Clarke’s recent comments that people need to “move on” from the issue and not helped by England struggling to regain winning form. That Cook has retained his position, seemingly without too many questions asked, has also caused some consternation from his more vocal critics but Cook insists he has not personally felt any animosity from the fans.”I’m sure if you live your life on social media it would be slightly different but from the people I’ve bumped into in the street or the pub the goodwill is still there to English cricket,” he said. “That’s only what I’ve experienced and it is slightly different when you meet people face-to-face I’m sure.”People were obviously disappointed with the winter, as any cricket fan would be, and the players were disappointed as well, that’s a given. We are incredibly lucky with the support we’ve got, as we always have whether we’ve won or lost, and as players were are incredible grateful for the support we get.”But a continued struggle to string wins together this summer against Sri Lanka and India will start to test the patience of even the most loyal supporters.”No-one’s got a divine right to win a game of cricket,” Cook said. “Sri Lanka are an incredibly dangerous side so we’ve got to play some good aggressive cricket. We are going to leave it all out there and we are desperate for a good performance. But that doesn’t guarantee anything. The fresh start and stuff is brilliant but it’s all now down to playing some good cricket.”In this one-day series there is also a bigger picture to look at with the World Cup now less than nine months away. Cook took on the 50-over captaincy in 2011 following the previous tournament as England began another cycle of trying to overcome their woes in the premier global event, but Cook conceded that they are nowhere near as clear on their line-up as he had hoped they would be.”I remember in 2011 sitting down when I first started as England captain saying I want this four years to build up and come the World Cup we’ll have a settled side leading into it. I’d hoped to have eight or nine months where it would be settled. That was the theory but I probably wasn’t living in the world of reality if I’m being honest because a lot can happen in four years as we’ve seen.”Of course, it would be ideal if everything was settled and everyone knew their role. But we don’t know the 13 or 14 we’ll take out there. They’ll be the decisions we start making now because of what happened over the last three or four months. We build towards the World Cup from now.”One aspect of the team Cook did seem much more certain of was the continuation of his opening partnership with Ian Bell. There has been much clamour to shake up England’s top order, but the continued absence of Alex Hales showed that was not top of the selectors’ thoughts and it does not appear as Michael Carberry, who had a poor T20 yesterday, will split the incumbent pairing although he could yet bat at No. 3.There is logic in retaining the current partnership which is the second-highest scoring first-wicket combination for England: in 33 innings since they came together on a full-time basis in June 2012 they have averaged 42.28 and even in Australia were regularly forming a solid platform which gives Cook the confidence they can work in a variety of conditions.”If you look back to that Australia one-day series there were five very different wickets we had to play on,” Cook said. “So at Perth when it was a belter and we needed a quick start because we knew 300 would be a par score we got off to a really good start. So we have got the power to do that. But there’ll be other times in England or say Adelaide when you’re playing on a slow wicket and it nips around a bit. You need the guys to adapt their skills to handle those conditions. That’s what I’m looking for as a side.”Quite what England will do with the other end of the order was not quite so certain. James Anderson is back to take the new ball which will give the attack an added edge, and greater experience, but the major vulnerability remains at the death. Harry Gurney impressed in the T20 but, two matches into his international career, he will need someone to share the burden. If England continue to haemorrhage runs in the latter stages Cook will find it difficult to secure the wins to ensure the fans remain on side.

Rory Burns fell just one run short of a double-century as Surrey smashed a host of records in heaping a mammoth total of 626 for 6 on ramshackle Gloucestershire in Bristol.Burns was not alone in falling short of a personal milestone, with Zafar Ansari slipping two short of his maiden first-class century. Burns’ 199, Ansari’s 98 and Jason Roy’s red-hot unbeaten 121 from just 71 balls – only his second first-class hundred – were all new first-class personal bests.Vikram Solanki also fired 143 as Surrey refused to be contained in the West Country. Gloucestershire’s 112 all out is a mere speck on the County Ground horizon after two days, given Surrey’s 514-run lead.Surrey had resumed on 186 without loss, with Ansari 84 and Burns 98 overnight. Spin-bowling allrounder Ansari followed up his 77 not out and 62 against Worcestershire at The Oval at the start of the month with another fine knock, surpassing his previous best of 83 not out.Burns eclipsed his previous top score of 121 as the visitors applied a constant chokehold – and then Roy hammered past his 106 not out highest knock without consummate ease.Ansari proved the day’s first dismissal, just two runs shy of that maiden first-class century, Alex Gidman holding the catch from Benny Howell’s bowling. South Africa’s new Test captain Hashim Amla was unable to force a start, trapped leg before by Will Gidman for just 9.Surrey breezed away from leaking two wickets for 12 runs, Burns ticking along at a solid rate and new partner Solanki raising the pace. The vastly-experienced 38-year-old blasted his century from just 112 balls as the visitors showed their superiority.Burns and Solanki put on 212 for the third wicket as Surrey seriously ratcheted up proceedings, Burns homing in on a double century. Just as he was lining up his celebrations though, Liam Norwell had him caught by Alex Gidman, just the one agonising run short.Unsatisfied with 439 for 3, greedy Surrey kept on dismantling the Gloucestershire attack. Steven Davies fell to Will Gidman for 9, but Solanki moved on to 143 before he was removed, by Matt Taylor.Sensing a slog-fest, Roy stepped into the fray and produced the innings of the day, where aggression was concerned at least. His howitzer hundred came from just 55 balls and 67 minutes, including nine fours and seven sixes. Gary Wilson then hit 26 before he was clean bowled by Norwell, with Gareth Batty 4 not out at the close.

Could England nab Lyth too?

In the interests of their title challenge, the last thing Yorkshire want is to have the England selectors asking too many questions about Adam Lyth

In the interests of their title challenge, the last thing Yorkshire want is to have the England selectors asking too many questions about Adam Lyth but it may be difficult to keep them off the scent given his consistent excellence this season.Five first-class hundreds, four in the Championship; 1,134 first-class runs, 1,004 in the Championship (the first to do so in Division One): the numbers are impressive, as is the way in which he is making them, with an enhanced sense of care and responsibility.Already deprived of three players – Joe Root, Gary Ballance and Liam Plunkett – even with Jonny Bairstow and Tim Bresnan out of favour, you would imagine Andrew Gale might want to play down the credentials of another but the Yorkshire captain is inclined to do the opposite. After Lyth’s 230 against Northamptonshire at the beginning of June, he boldly claimed that “compared with all the Yorkshire lads who have played for England recently, he has the most ability.”The selectors do not appear yet to be quite so keen. Since his 1,500 runs in the 2010 season earned him a trip to the Caribbean with an England Lions side managed by the recently appointed England selector Mick Newell he has not had a look-on. This is his best year subsequently – it may turn out even better – and there is no doubt he has moved to a different level. He has scored 50 runs or more in more than half of his 17 Championship innings so far, the consistent theme of which has been his willingness, when the situation demands it, to be a patient accumulator. He remains a lovely batsman to watch, particularly when driving on the off, but he has become much more willing to bide his time, less inclined to follow his attacking instincts and nick off early. He has worked hard to eliminate vulnerabilities in his game and it is paying off handsomely. As Yorkshire transferred operations to Scarborough, just along the coast from Lyth’s home town of Whitby, he demonstrated again that he has acquired an ability to stick around even in difficult conditions, making a grafted 117 that acquired even more value as Middlesex fought back late in the day.Lyth has half an eye on Cook’s form

Adam Lyth insisted his mind was fixed on scoring runs for Yorkshire rather than any impression he might have made on the England selectors with his form this season but acknowledged after making his hundred at Scarborough that there is one England opener not in the best of nick.

He believes, too, that he is a much better batsman than he was in 2010, when 1,500 runs in the domestic season earned him a winter with England Lions.

“It is not really in the back of my mind but obviously Alastair Cook is struggling for a bit of form,” Lyth said. “But all I can do is keep scoring runs. If I did get the call then obviously I’d be pleased. I will try to keep scoring runs for Yorkshire, helping us to win games and if the call came I’d be over the moon.

“I feel this is the best I am hitting the ball in my career so far. My technique is a lot better than it was in 2010 and I’m very pleased with the way it is going.

“I’m leaving the ball a hell of a lot better than the last couple of years. I’ve not really chased much outside off stump, although I did chase one on 99 to get to a hundred and had a bit of luck but I deserved that, I think.”

There were a few streaky moments, although nothing that constituted a chance until he had made 75, when he skewed a ball from Toby Roland-Jones that Eoin Morgan should have taken at gully. Lyth took in his moment of good fortune but then stomped away on to the adjoining pitch, swishing his bat angrily. He values his wicket highly now. He completed his hundred, too, with not his best shot, edging a ball from Steven Finn to the third man boundary for four. There was plenty in this pitch, which had bounce and carry and a good covering of grass and the atmosphere remained humid after overnight rain. Had Middlesex bowled a little fuller in the morning session, the day might have unfolded differently. As it was, their only success before lunch came when Roland-Jones produced a fine ball to remove Alex Lees, one that was pitched up and moved away late to take the edge as the batsman tried to defend.Rain hastened an early interval, after which Finn, unlucky against Lees earlier, gained his reward when Kane Williamson, back with Yorkshire to resume in Aaron Finch’s place as overseas player, was bowled by one that swung back.It was after a second, longer stoppage in the afternoon, setting up a final session that would have extended to almost 45 overs but for bad light, that Middlesex began to gain rewards for deciding to bowl first, encouraging them to think that, notwithstanding Lyth’s runs, they had done rather well.Finn claimed a second success – his 42nd of the season – when Gale cut straight to Rogers at point for 30, then 20-year-old Tom Helm, preferred to James Harris as fourth seamer with the latter going back to Glamorgan on loan, ended a torrid 42-ball innings from Bairstow by bowling the deposed England wicketkeeper for 5.With the ball doing plenty and batsmen perhaps struggling in the fading light, Roland-Jones bowled Jack Leaning with another full length ball before Helm made one bounce to end Lyth’s wonderful knock – his first Championship hundred on the ground of his cricket upbringing – via a catch off the shoulder of the bat, taken at second slip.

Canberra to host BBL final

The emergence of Canberra’s Manuka Oval as an increasingly significant cricket venue in Australia will continue this summer after Cricket Australia announced the ground would host the BBL final

Manuka Oval has become a more attractive venue for Cricket Australia in recent years•Abacus

The emergence of Canberra’s Manuka Oval as an increasingly significant cricket venue in Australia will continue this summer after Cricket Australia announced the ground would host the BBL final. In an unexpected move, Cricket Australia decided that the neutral venue would be appropriate for the decider on January 28, after giving hosting rights in previous years to the highest-placed finalist.Although it will be a busy summer for cricket in Australia, the final will be played more than two weeks before the first World Cup match in Australia. Two matches, including the final, in the ODI tri-series will be played at the WACA on January 30 and February 1. The BBL final will follow semi-finals that will be played in other cities around the country.”We have looked at a number of options for hosting the final of the Big Bash League, given the unique summer of international cricket that lies ahead and the significant demands that will place on venues around the country,” Mike McKenna, CA’s executive general manager of operations, said. “That consideration, combined with our efforts to further establish the BBL as a truly national competition, was part of our decision making.”We think the concept of staging the final in the neutral territory of the nation’s capital has merit. Manuka Oval has undergone significant work in recent times to upgrade facilities for fans. We think it can provide a great backdrop to the biggest match of the tournament while exposing a new market to the excitement of the league.”Manuka Oval has become a popular venue with Cricket Australia in recent years: in February 2013, it hosted Australia for a one-day international for the first time, and another between Australia and South Africa is scheduled there for November 19 this year. The ground will also host three World Cup matches in February and March. The required handover of World Cup venues to the ICC on January 31 was also a factor in the choice of a neutral venue in advance, rather than having numerous potential grounds preparing for a match not guaranteed. “With some grounds around the country unavailable at the time of the final, combined with the busy international summer which includes ICC Cricket World Cup preparations, the neutral venue of Canberra was identified as the most suitable location to host the BBL final,” a CA spokesperson said. For the past three seasons, the BBL finals have been held at the WACA after the Perth Scorchers earned hosting rights. Christina Matthews, the chief executive officer of the WACA, said she was disappointed that there would be no possibility of the Scorchers hosting the final again this summer.”Whilst we are disappointed to have not been given the rights to host the final, we are comfortable that, given CA’s desire to hold the final in a neutral venue, they have chosen a truly neutral venue and not another team’s ground,” Matthews said.”With ‘The Furnace’ having hosted the last three finals, it was maybe the only way for CA to have the match played on the other side of the country and it is a credit to WA cricket that they weren’t willing to take the risk for the fourth year in a row.”Manuka Oval has undergone significant work in recent years, including the installation of light towers and funding to resurface the playing area and add new seating. It hosted the Sheffield Shield final earlier this year after New South Wales won hosting rights but were unable to play at the SCG due to a Major League Baseball game being played there.
