Mominul ton sets target of 449

Mominul Haque’s fourth Test century laid the foundation for Bangladesh to press on for a win in the third Test against Zimbabwe in Chittagong

Mominul Haque’s fourth Test century laid the foundation for Bangladesh to press on for a win in the third Test in Chittagong. Zimbabwe were set a stiff target of 449 and although they got off at a brisk pace, ending the evening on 71 for 1, survival would be key for the visitors on the final day.Rubel Hossain completed Brian Chari’s pair in the second over after which Hamilton Masakadza and Sikandar Raza ran at the Bangladesh bowlers for the last hour. They made 26 and 43 respectively and looked as dominating as they did in the second evening.Bangladesh declared on 319 for 5, 54 minutes into the final session on the fourth day, during which Tamim Iqbal made 65 and quick runs came from Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah. Mominul chipped away at the flagging visitors and Shakib Al Hasan crossed the 250-run mark in the three-match series, apart from his 18 wickets. This was the first time Bangladesh scored 300-plus in both innings as well as scoring an aggregate of 822 runs, their highest for a Test match. They ended the series with 1,858 runs, their highest in a single series.Mushfiqur blasted four boundaries and two sixes in his 30-ball 46 and Shuvagata Hom came out for 1.2 overs before the declaration came. Mominul ended up unbeaten on 131 off 189 balls with 13 boundaries. Apart from picking up fours regularly, he ensured that singles and twos were hardly missed throughout his stay on the fourth day. He had a nervous moment when on 89 as an lbw appeal was reviewed after it was turned down. But the ball was too high and the on-field umpire’s decision stood. He was stuck in the nineties for 23 deliveries but finally reached the milestone with a dangling bat that guided the ball through the gap between point and short third-man. Mominul began with two drives that beautifully threaded through extra cover and mid-off. There were two drives through mid-on, as well as standard fours with sweeps, pulls and cuts.He has now joined Everton Weekes, Alec Stewart, Matthew Hayden, Jacques Kallis, Simon Katich and Kumar Sangakkara as batsmen with 50-plus scores in nine consecutive Tests. He has also become the fourth batsman after Weekes, Sunil Gavaskar and Mark Taylor to score 50-plus eleven times in his first 12 Tests.Mominul added 88 for the second wicket with Tamim Iqbal, who was bowled for 65 when an attempted glide, which had come off twice earlier, didn’t work against Natsai M’shangwe. It was the Zimbabwe legspinner’s first wicket of the game after bowling 58 overs.Mahmudullah also batted well, hammering a 28-ball 30 with three fours and a six which was caught in the boundary momentarily but the fielder’s feet had touched the boundary rope. He and Mominul added 55 runs in 10.3 overs, an acceleration Bangladesh required at the stage.

West Indies still carry the Ambrose effect

Whatever state West Indies cricket is in, there are some players from the islands who will never lose their aura. Curtly Ambrose is one of them, particularly for South Africans.

Curtly Ambrose carries his aura even with his playing days long behind him•WICB

Whatever state West Indies cricket is in, there are some players from the islands who will never lose their aura. Curtly Ambrose is one of them, particularly for South Africans. The four wickets Ambrose took on the final day of South Africa’s comeback Test in 1992, which took his innings tally to six and his match haul to eight, derailed a South African chase which seemed certain to reach the station. Ambrose’s achievement that day was down to the same thing he said has contributed to the South African pace pack’s successes: “Consistency”.He admitted that ingredient alone will be required by the West Indian batsmen to bring out their “A game” if they hope to compete against South Africa but cautioned against writing the visitors off completely. “I feel very confident with where we are at the moment and I believe that we are going to do well, contrary to what others may believe,” Ambrose, who is West Indies bowling consultant said. “We all know South Africa is the No. 1 team in the world but we are prepared.”South Africa have already identified the West Indian bowlers as a bigger threat than their batsmen and the knowledge they are being mentored by Ambrose may only underline that. But Ambrose did not want to put too much emphasis on his coaching, describing it as much tougher than actually stepping on the field on match day. “It’s a lot different coaching than bowling,” he said. “It can be frustrating as a coach because as a bowler I have always believed I can work magic with the ball in my hand. As a coach you can take to the guys and if they are not doing what you ask, it can become frustrating. It was easier being a bowler than a coach.”But he current crop of West Indian quicks have not given Ambrose any “trouble” and he praised them for “working hard and showing improvement”. He did not want to compare them to the great packs of the past or to name individuals who he thought would make the biggest impact, instead preferring to preach the collective philosophy. “It’s a different era and we have to work with what we have. I don’t want to single out any one. Its all about the team,” he said. “No one bowler can win a game for you, it takes a team. As long we play together as a team, we will do well here.”His advice to them on South African wickets, which are among the spiciest they would have played on is “not to get too carried away” by the assistance. “The most important thing is to maintain your focus,” he said. “Even though the pitch is bouncy, you have to put the ball in the right areas consistently. You won’t see us doing anything out of the ordinary.”That may also mean West Indies will not opt for an all-pace attack even though that formula was how they won their only Test in South Africa in 2007. “It doesn’t mean because we won with four fast bowlers last time that we are going to win again,” Ambrose said “I’m a bit of a realist. It depends on the track you are going to play on and the conditions. That will determine your bowling line-up.”SuperSport Park’s healthy green covering was all but completely stripped off on Monday, two days before the match. Some regrowth may still be left on it for the Test match, which is why Ambrose said he “tries not to look at the wicket prior to the game. I wait for the morning of the game and make assessment then.”One thing he could confirm was that the West Indian bowlers will approach this series in the same way Ambrose approached bowling throughout his career. “We’re not going to bowl any lengths for them to drive,” he said. And as he did, some of the old snarl snuck back out and the South African batsmen may have had reason to shudder, even if only for a moment.

New Zealand continue to build Test reputation

The win in Sharjah continues a terrific 2014 for New Zealand, which included home-and-away wins over West Indies and a home victory against India

Chandresh Narayanan30-Nov-20142:47

Pillars of New Zealand’s Test successes

“We are pretty kind of understated people. We are good blokes really aren’t we? We Kiwis,” said New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum flashing a brief smile after the win in the Sharjah Test. The worn out baggy black Test cap was back on McCullum’s head, after it had been hung on the bats as a mark of respect to the late Australian batsman Phillip Hughes. The smile was the only time McCullum showed a side of himself that had deserted him in the past few days. The Test match was won, but McCullum was still emotionally worn out following the demise of Hughes. The win had still not sunk in for him as he felt “pretty empty”.But even in these trying times, what did not go unnoticed was that New Zealand had continued to make rapid strides as a Test team. The side may have only moved to seventh place in the ICC Test rankings, but that does not tell the full story.Since the time the side was shot out for 45 in January 2013 by South Africa, New Zealand has gone about slowly but surely rebuilding the line-up for Test cricket. McCullum revealed the kind of effort that was put in behind the scenes to “get the attitude right”.”From the low of being bowled out for 45 against South Africa, we can only go up,” said McCullum. “What that allowed us to do was strip things right back to what was important to us, how we wanted to be known as a team, how the country wanted us to play, the traits that they wanted to see from the New Zealand team. We got our characteristics right. We have got a culture which is desperate to represent New Zealand and perform well during the time that we have (as a player).”The “desperation” to do well for the country has resulted in New Zealand not losing a Test series since they were beaten 0-2 by England away in June 2013. Since drawing 0-0 away in Bangladesh in 2013-14, New Zealand have beaten West Indies both home (2-0) and away (2-1), got the better of India at home (1-0) and have now shared a three-Test series in the UAE 1-1 against Pakistan. In the last 11 Test matches, New Zealand have registered six wins and have suffered just two losses to signify their rise as a Test side.”(We wanted to be) The team that never gives up and if they do get beaten, it’s very hard to beat (them). We have gone about trying to put guys in different positions. Mark’s (Craig) a classic case in point. And he’s been able to come in and prosper in an environment which is allowing him to settle.”The biggest plus has been that New Zealand’s batting has delivered regularly in the past year. The man leading the charge has been McCullum himself, but he prefers to give the credit to the rest of the line-up. The bowling, led by Tim Southee and Trent Boult, has also been a big factor in the team’s performances.”We have obviously got Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor and also Tom Latham the way that he is performing. We are starting to get big hundreds as a team, we are starting to put some runs on the board which is allowing not only our dynamic seam attack but also our spinners to come into the game.”McCullum seems to be revelling in his role as a captain. He has already scored three double-hundreds in this calendar year, thereby joining the likes of Michael Clarke, Ricky Ponting and Don Bradman. It has been a year when McCullum has not just endured the responsibility of being captain, but also has taken upon himself the mantle of being the opener. The culture of the team though matters more to McCullum than anything else.”I love being able to see some of the guys emerge and I get real buzz out of that. I guess as a captain, as a leader you have got to be performing as well. I am enjoying being able to make those kind of contributions, tick off milestones along the way. For me it’s about making contributions to the team, especially when the team goes on to win.”New Zealand’s rise also gained praise from Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq, who said he believed McCullum’s team can now win anywhere in the world.”I think especially the way Brendon McCullum is performing, that’s the key for them,” Misbah said. “They have (also) got a really good bowling side, especially Tim Southee and Boult. In these sort of conditions, even the way they were bowling with the new ball and then (using) reverse swing, that’s the key for them. Now they have (also) found two good spinners (Ish Sodhi and Mark Craig) who can really bowl well in these sort of conditions.”The rebuilding process for New Zealand in Test cricket has happened without the presence of their premier spinner, Daniel Vettori. The left-armer had been away from Test cricket and was only drafted at the last minute for the Sharjah Test. McCullum acknowledged that it was “tough” not having Vettori in the side. But from afar Vettori has watched the side grow in stature. “I think it’s a very settled team and a very balanced side,” Vettori said. “The team’s extremely well led by Brendon. It’s really exciting coming into the group and seeing him (McCullum) lead and be able to play with him. He is a special guy and a special leader. The guys really feed off that.”McCullum though remained modest about the achievements of 2014. “We have still got a long way to go. We certainly don’t want to get too carried away with our performances. But it is nice to be able to look back at times and reflect on some performances which have been positive.”

'Sometimes we're too harsh on our bowlers' – Kohli

Virat Kohli began the task of captaining India full time by throwing his weight behind his bowlers, saying the batsmen need to share some of the blame for India’s failures

Sidharth Monga in Sydney05-Jan-20154:17

‘Will always try to take advice from Dhoni’ – Kohli

This series began with Virat Kohli as India’s temporary captain and will end with his being India’s permanent captain. Ravi Shastri has been around throughout. Aggression has thus been the buzzword. Those who are expecting a magic wand to wave over and transform India will do well to be reminded the bowlers remain the same. The same men who have failed to sustain pressure for MS Dhoni. It’s an attack where the loose ball is never too far away. The real test for an India captain is to provide new results with the same attack. Kohli began the task by throwing his weight behind the bowlers, saying the batsmen need to share some of the blame.”Consistency is something we have to improve on,” Kohli said. “Sometimes we are too harsh on our bowlers. There have been times in England as well where the batting has failed, and in this sport you need a lot of honesty. We should stand up and say that we didn’t do our job properly. Sometimes we are too harsh on our bowlers.”When our bowlers get hit it is always about bad bowling, when their bowlers are hit it was good batting. I don’t understand where the problem lies. Sometimes they might have bowled not up to the mark, but our bowlers are always under the scanner. Let’s not be too critical of them. They are young. What I saw in MCG was a good sign of what you need in Test cricket – when you are tired, bowl a tight spell, that’s what the best teams in the world do. Coming back into the game at important moments. The first spells have been good, and when they improve their second and third spells can change the game. You will see different results.”Kohli’s assessment of the bowlers is not too different from the start of the series, when he sounded extremely excited about the presence of three 140-plus bowlers. “Still think that if you have three bowlers who can bowl 140-plus that is a positive,” Kohli said. “At the end of the day it is about bowling in the right areas in those important situations, that’s where your composure comes in the second or third spells. The guys know that, we just need to give them that breathing space in Test cricket because once you get a combination right and when you get the guys on the same page it is a very delightful journey that you enjoy winning situations/moments.”The guys are pretty close to that, to see that happen sooner than later, and in this game we don’t need to do much different than bowl consistently in the right areas. The fact that they have improved in the MCG Test, especially in the second innings when they were tired, shows that this can be done. So it is just about locking that in their brains and doing it every time the team needs them to do it.”Kohli said he has reflected on the Adelaide Test, and has learnt the lessons he needs to learn. “There were quite a few things from Adelaide that I sat down and analysed which can be improved upon,” Kohli said. “I have thought about them in the past few days, that what are the things that I can correct from Adelaide, the mistakes I have made in that game. Hopefully I’ll get those right and try to make the right decisions in every situation out there in the middle.”Plus, I don’t think there needs to be a major change. The message was plain and simple in Adelaide: go out there, back yourself, express yourself, play positively and play to win. So, there’s nothing special I need to say again to the boys because everyone is on the same page and you have seen it with the way we have played in this series. We have always looked to be positive. What we could have done better is win those important moments and that’s something I think we need to improve as a Test team. Once you get that composure right in those difficult situations, where the Test matches are won or lost in an hour or about 40 minutes, you will see a very different Test team and different results as well.”Kohli might not want to change things too much, but things are changing fast. This could also be the last Test as India coach for Duncan Fletcher, whose contract comes up for review at the end of the World Cup. Like the erring bowlers, Fletcher, too, experienced Kohli’s support. He even suggested it might be down to Flethcer if he wants to continue or not. “He has done a very good job with all the young players in the team,” Kohli said. “The players who have played in the past, the senior players, won’t require as much help as compared to the youngsters. With the youngsters he has been really good with the technical part of the game and improving small little things in our games.”It makes a big difference when we go out there to play in international cricket, especially because of the kind of experience he has had with a lot of teams. I have personally certainly enjoyed him being coach and all the youngsters and all the players that have played under him have also enjoyed because you get a lot of input. But at the end of the day it’s an individual’s call [to continue or not]. What I want and what other players want [doesn’t matter], at the end of the day what matters is his personal decision. We just have to wait and watch what happens at that point of time, but I have really enjoyed playing under Duncan Fletcher.”
