Johnson fires up but Watson, Marsh miss out

Allrounder slot remains an issue for Australia

Where Mitchell Johnson signalled his intent to again dent England with spells of speed and venom on a Canterbury pitch that offered him little help, neither Shane Watson nor Mitchell Marsh were able to push ahead as the allrounder most likely to take a pivotal place in Australia’s first Test XI.After Steven Smith surged ominously to his first – and surely not last – century of this tour, Watson and Marsh both had the opportunity to make a substantial score against tired bowlers and on a blameless pitch. Each had their moments, but tallies of 21 and 30 were of the unconvincing kind – not least because Australia’s tail-enders have been bettering those starts with increasing regularity. The two dismissals were characteristic. Watson lathered a short ball square of the wicket but close enough to Joe Denly for him to dive brilliantly and pluck the catch, leaving the 34-year-old to wander off with the pained look of a latter-day King Lear. Marsh looked balanced and powerful during his stay, but grew overconfident enough to swish across the line at Matt Hunn and lose his off stump.’No way I get paid enough to be facing him’

Thirteen years ago in Australia, Rob Key faced up to Glenn McGrath, Brett Lee and Jason Gillespie at their best. Facing up to a rapid Mitchell Johnson at Canterbury, he used long-suppressed memories of those days to combat a bowler who had him questioning whether Kent paid him enough danger money for the task.
“For a large part of that I thought, there is no way I get paid enough to be facing him. And I do alright for myself, don’t get me wrong,” Key said. “He is a different level. The pace he has, he gets the odd one to swing. It doesn’t matter which pitch you are on, that bloke is a serious bowler. He can intimidate you but he can also move the ball around a little bit. He’s tough.
“You don’t face that type of bowling in county cricket. For the first bit out there, you had to kind of remember what you used to do against bowlers like that. He’s a proper, proper bowler.”
With competition tight for pace bowling places in the Australian side, some have speculated that Johnson may find himself running the drinks despite his shattering displays in the 2013-14 Ashes. Key struggled to picture that.
“I think if he wasn’t playing there would be a lot of batters quite happy,” he said. “We’ve seen it in the Ashes back home, he’s just quick and he’s something different to everyone else. But they’ve got a battery of seamers now. They are all just very very good, but his pace and what he can do … Clarke uses him brilliantly because he keeps him fresh. He’s a different level.”

Such errors of judgment continue to frustrate the coach Darren Lehmann, who has made a virtue of mistakes being fine so long as they are not repeated. Nevertheless he is wedded to the concept of choosing an allrounder as the team’s fifth bowler, and further dead heats will likely mean that Watson keeps his place for Cardiff.Johnson took the new ball alongside Ryan Harris, and immediately set about staking his claim for one of three pace bowling places in the first Investec Test. In a swift first over he accounted for the promising opener Daniel Bell-Drummond, first pushing him back onto the stumps then pinning him lbw with a full delivery that swung back just enough to have Nigel Llong raising his finger. At the other end Harris landed his first ball on the postage stamp around off stump, but still looked to be finding the zip of his very best work. Lehmann has stated that Harris still looks “short of a gallop”, and needs some more overs before being ready for Test duty, and that looked the case here. Peter Siddle replaced him at the Pavilion End, bowling sturdily and eventually coaxing an edge from Denly after a pesky stand with Rob Key.It is 13 years since Key appeared down under as a plucky middle-order batsman who did rather better than a series average of 17 would suggest, and he worked diligently to provide some sort of resistance against Australia’s attack. Fawad Ahmed flighted the odd delivery teasingly but was also taken for runs, and it was something of a surprise when Key, on 87, swatted the legspinner to midwicket.Key’s exit was the signal for a renewed burst of pace from Johnson, as Sam Northeast then Ben Harmison were undone by his speed and direction. Northeast edged behind while trying to leave a lifter, and Harmison was beaten for pace and movement to be comprehensively bowled. That left Sam Billings and Adam Ball to hold on until the close, thwarting the efforts of Mitchell Marsh to add a wicket to his earlier batting cameo. Watson was curiously unused as a bowler, leaving open the question of where he now sits in the scheme of things.

Mithali Raj anchored India Women’s chase with a steady fifty and lifted them to an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series against Sri Lanka Women in Ranchi. Chasing 108, India were reduced to 27 for 4 in the seventh over before Raj and Anuja Patil combined for a 77-run stand to rescue the hosts.India lost Vellaswamy Vanitha, Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma in successive overs, before wrecker-in-chief Inoka Ranaweera trapped Veda Krishnamurthy in the seventh over to leave India reeling. Patil and Raj then took India to the brink of victory, before Patil was caught and bowled. However, Raj went on to bring up her half-century and take India home with an over to spare. Left-arm spinner Ranaweera took 3 for 10 from four overs.Earlier, Sri Lanka got off to a slow start after opting to bat. Shikha Pandey removed Yasoda Mendis, who made an 18-ball 3, in the sixth over. Chamari Atapattu (22), Dilani Manodara (27) and Shashikala Siriwardene (26) all made contributions to help Sri Lanka reach a decent total.India’s bowlers pulled things back towards the end to keep Sri Lanka to 107. Ekta Bisht took 3 for 22, while Poonam Yadav claimed 3 for 17, all her wickets coming in the penultimate over.

South Africa seek to keep on winning; Australia, to stop losing

South Africa have won their last five completed T20s; they’ll want to carry that form into the World T20. Australia have lost their last five completed T20s; they’ll want to find form before the T20 showcase in India

The Preview by Firdose Moonda05-Mar-2016Match factsSunday, March 6, 2016
Start time 14.30 local (12.30GMT)Big PictureIt has reached the stage where South Africa want to time to speed up. They are on a hot streak that they will want to keep burning into the World T20 but may be secretly worried that it will fizzle out by the time they get there. They have peaked too early before. It has also reached the stage where Australia want time to slow down. They’re only just starting to figure out their plans ahead of the World T20 and they’ve still got some work to do. Who to open with? How many allrounders to field? And they’ve only got two more matches to get it right. In the middle of all that it has reached the stage where another series could be decided. South Africa are already one up and victory in Johannesburg will ensure they can add a third limited-overs trophy to their cabinet this summer. It’s not quite the cup they are really after but it will do nonetheless. Australia don’t have the same obsession with silverware – they have more than enough of it anyway – but have already lost a T20 series to India this year and are under pressure to take it to a decider in Cape Town next Wednesday. If South Africa want to give Dale Steyn reasonable game time before the World T20, they’ll have to play him in Johannesburg•Getty Images

Form guideSouth Africa WWWWW (last five completed games, most recent first)
Australia LLLLLIn the spotlightIt’s rare for a player to be under scrutiny for two matches in a row but because Dale Steyn did not play in Durban, he will occupy the hot seat again. South Africa insisted Steyn was fit to play but the chose to bench to him to give the attack that has performed well for them over the last few months another chance and they did not disappoint. Now, Steyn has to play to determine his availability for the World T20 and it could prove more of a disruption than anything else… unless of course, Steyn is back to his destructive best.Peter Nevill made no promises about being able to offer anything more than good glovework ahead of the series and followed through with that in the first match. While he was nifty behind the stumps, he did not provide much in front of them and with Australia deep in the throes of a middle-order collapse, he only added to it. Nevill has been picked purely as a specialist wicketkeeper but the nature of T20 cricket will demand he also provides something with the bat and this could be his chance to show what that is.Team newsSouth Africa fielded what Faf du Plessis called their first-choice team in Durban and their success will make it difficult to make changes, but Russell Domingo’s request that Dale Steyn play in at least two matches in the series means they have to. Steyn could come in at Kyle Abbott’s expense. Hashim Amla could return to open the batting and Farhaan Behardien may displace one of JP Duminy or Rilee Rossouw in the middle order.South Africa (probable) 1 Hashim Amla, 2 AB de Villiers (wk), 3 Faf du Plessis (capt), 4 JP Duminy, 5 David Miller, 6 Rilee Rossouw/Farhaan Behardien, 7 Chris Morris, 8 David Wiese, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Imran TahirIf Australia insist on David Warner at one-drop, Shane Watson is lurking in the wings to open the batting with Aaron Finch. James Faulkner and Josh Hazlewood both sat out in Durban and, with the series on the line, may return to the XI. Adam Zampa’s impressive T20I debut may mean Ashton Agar has to wait for his.Australia (probable) 1 Usman Khawaja/Shane Watson, 2 Aaron Finch 3 David Warner, 4 Steven Smith (capt), 5 Glenn Maxwell, 6 Mitchell Marsh, 7 Peter Nevill (wk), 8 John Hastings/James Faulkner, 9 Nathan Coulter-Nile, 10 Josh Hazlewood/Andrew Tye, 11 Adam ZampaPitch and conditionsWhile Durban provided an almost subcontinent experience, Johannesburg could be the complete opposite. The altitude means the ball will fly through the air faster and the surface – traditionally packed with pace, bounce, and runs – is unlikely to feature as many cracks. At least it will match much of Indian conditions for heat, with temperatures in the mid-30s with no afternoon thunderstorm to cool things down.Stats and trivia The Wanderers has hosted more of South Africa’s home T20Is than any other ground. Of the 15 fixtures they played there, South Africa have won 11 Aaron Finch needs 86 more runs to reach 1,000 T20I runsQuotes”Playing in such big grounds and around big crowds always feels like a real honour. That definitely motivates me and probably gives me another 10% to do well.”
“We’ve been criticised over the last few months over our fielding in all formats. The effort we’ve been putting in over the last couple of weeks leading up to this tour has been huge, and I think it’s showing.”

Olho nele!

Domingo faces scrutiny after World T20 failure

Russell Domingo’s job as South Africa’s coach is safe for now but will come under the microscope during a CSA review in the next few months

Firdose Moonda29-Mar-2016Russell Domingo’s job as South Africa’s coach is safe for now but will come under the microscope during a CSA review in the next few months. Chief executive Haroon Lorgat said that the annual performance appraisal will be more intricate than usual because, “with every passing ICC event that we come back from below expectation, the reviews should get tougher” but cautioned against rushing to conclusions over Domingo’s future, especially as he is contracted until April 2017.Domingo took over from Gary Kirsten in July 2013 and has endured his toughest period yet. South Africa lost back-to-back Test series against India and England and were booted out of the World T20 with a game to play to take the sheen off their limited-overs progress. It was also the first full season since the retirement of Graeme Smith and, given Smith’s decade-long presence around the squad, a major transition period for South Africa.”It goes without saying that we will need to do some sort of review. We will do it objectively, we will do it smartly; not knee-jerk. It’s not emotional stuff. We will do it properly,” Lorgat said at the team’s arrival.”To pre-empt that [Domingo may under pressure] is premature. He’s got a contract. I don’t think I would want to speculate before getting down to the details. There is no tournament in the offing, our next fixtures are in the middle of this year so there’s no need for a rush into this. Let us settle down and take it with great consideration. We are talking of futures, we are talking about the team and we want to provide the environment as best we can.”The combination of a decline in results and the struggle to move on from senior players have not made things easy for Domingo but, when asked if he wants to continue, Domingo was adamant that he does. “Absolutely. It’s a massive honour and a massive privilege. Everyone wants to do it and it’s a big challenge at the moment,” he said. “We’ve obviously not achieved what we’ve set out to achieve and we have set some goals we want to achieve. It’s a big challenge for me.”Domingo is also convinced he has the backing of the squad and the right mix of support staff to continue in the role. “I know the players support me, I have got a very good relationship with the players. There are always going to be coaches who lose games at World Cups. The management we have put together is as good as any in the world. I am pretty confident it’s the right management team to take the team forward.”Of particular concern was the lack of international experience among South Africa’s backroom staff, which is headed by Domingo and assistant Adrian Birrell. Neither of them played at the highest level but South Africa have bulked up on several former players to add insight. Charl Langeveldt took over from Allan Donald as the bowling coach, Claude Henderson is the spin bowling coach and Neil McKenzie succeeded Smith, Kirsten and Mike Hussey as batting consultant.Langeveldt’s involvement has also been questioned, after South Africa’s attack were unusually ill-disciplined. In their four matches at the World T20, they conceded 36 runs in wides which Faf du Plessis identified as the key reason they bowed out of the tournament early. “The basics – I feel that’s where we possibly bailed out of the World Cup. The fact that we bowled too many extras,” he said.Despite that, Domingo’s defended Langeveldt’s impact and blamed the lapses on pressure. “If anybody asks you who is one of South Africa’s best ever one-day bowlers you are going to say Charl Langeveldt. He has got the experience as a player and he has up skilled our bowlers remarkably. You can see the improvement in their skills.””We got it wrong in one or two games at the World Cup but generally our back-up bowling has improved over the last year that he has been in charge. It’s very difficult to point fingers. It’s not something I should be doing. We’ve got to front up and take responsibility. It wasn’t good enough. That comes with pressure. Our disciplines have generally been pretty good. It’s one of those that’s difficult to explain.”Overall, Domingo also found it “difficult to explain” why South Africa did not play the “big moments” well enough or why they could not come with what du Plesiss termed the “complete game” in their first three matches. “It’s a tough one to point out why we are batting well and then not bowling well and then bowling well and not batting well. We are meticulous in our planning. We are efficient in our strategising. Why we haven’t crossed the line in a major event we still need to figure out.”And until they do, South Africa’s team manager Mohammed Moosajee conceded that, “questions will always be asked.” Perhaps the review will hold some answers.
