Chelsea: Fans go into meltdown after Edouard Mendy picks up training ground injury

Chelsea fans were devastated to discover that their new signing Edouard Mendy picked up an injury while on international duty.

The 28-year-old recently arrived in Central London from French outfit Rennes for £22m and has only made one Premier League appearance, which was during his side’s 4-0 victory against Crystal Palace.

According to the Senegalese FA, cited by Sky Sports, Mendy suffered a thigh injury during training and could be out during a crucial run of fixtures for Frank Lampard’s side.

Chelsea are due to play Southampton after the international break on October 17th before they are due to face Sevilla in the first Champions League matchday of the 2020/21 campaign.

Kepa Arizzabalaga would be expected to step in for the injured Mendy but is not a popular figure amongst the Stamford Bridge faithful after making a series of calamitous errors in recent months.

The prospect of the £71m goalkeeper was almost too much to bear for these supporters down below, who made their feelings clear when they discovered the news.

Newcastle United: Mauricio Pochettino ‘close’ to becoming boss amid takeover talks

Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly ‘close’ to becoming the new boss of Newcastle United, according to Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness).

As per the outlet, the former Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton and Espanyol coach has apparently rejected ‘many offers’ because he would like to return to managing in the Premier League.

St. James’ Park could well be his next destination, if the proposed takeover in the North East is eventually approved by the top flight.

Talks are still ongoing over whether the prospective £300 million deal between Amanda Staveley’s Saudi Arabian-led group and Mike Ashley will be given the approval by England’s highest division given some of the delays that has meant that the whole situation still remains unclear.

For example, it is not yet clear as to whether the would-be owners have passed the Owners’ and Directors’ Test (ODT) set out by the league, as they have to determine as to whether the buying side are both fit and proper people.

As well as Staveley, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabian (KSA) crown prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS) and the billionaire Reuben brothers, who are originally from India but based in London, are all aiming to take ownership of the Tyneside club.

Pochettino could well be a target of theirs to potentially replace Steve Bruce given his relatively impressive previous record in the Premier League, as he has won over half of the 256 games that he has managed in the top flight for the Saints and Spurs combined (via Transfermarkt).

However, everything is still speculation at this moment in time as the bid is not guaranteed to go through as of yet.

Glasgow Rangers: Fans rage at Ewan Murray tweet

Glasgow Rangers can only look on as football north of the border continues to be plunged into chaos.

All of the madness started following the suspension of the Scottish season due to the current pandemic. What should have been a simple vote for the resolution proposal put forward by the SPFL soon became a farce as Dundee’s decision was first not registered and then changed. That led to the Gers accusing the governing body of corruption, before they then demanded an investigation into the governing body, albeit in vain.

Now, Hearts and Partick Thistle have taken over the mantle of taking the fight to the authority, and they have now been hit with a charge from SFA after they took their relegation complaint to court rather than an arbitration panel first.

Scottish football is a farce at the moment, and journalist Ewan Murray has tweeted that the country’s authorities should be laughed at for their incompetence. This has attracted plenty of attention from the Ibrox outfit’s supporters, as you can imagine, and they have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts. Spurs fans react as Serge Aurier in line for new contract

According to Le 10 Sport, Tottenham Hotspur are planning to offer a contract extension to right-back Serge Aurier with his current deal due to expire in 2022.

And the news has torn supporters in north London going by their reaction on social media.

The 27-year-old is a divisive figure at Spurs, regularly taking flak from sections of the Hotspur faithful, but he’s still a regular presence in Jose Mourinho’s backline.

Aurier has played 33 times this season, scoring two goals as well as providing seven assists, via Transfermarkt.

The Portuguese chief is that confident in him that he allowed backup to the role, Kyle Walker-Peters, depart on loan during the January transfer window despite being relatively light on options.

Yet many fans at the club aren’t completely convinced by him.

Manchester United: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen to sign Chelsea star in shock move

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is ready to raid Chelsea in a shock move for Willian this summer.

The Red Devils are considering cheaper alternatives to Jadon Sancho as Borussia Dortmund are refusing to budge on their £100m valuation, via The Daily Express.

According to France Football, as relayed by the Express, Solskjaer has identified Willian as a possible replacement.

The Chelsea star’s contract will expire at the end of June and he is expected to leave Stamford Bridge.

Talks between the Blues and the Brazilian’s representatives have stalled as the winger wants a deal longer than the 12 months that are currently on offer.

Solskjaer has made it clear he wants to bolster youth with experience to support the likes of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood.

Willian will be available for free in a matter of weeks, which appears to have swayed his mind. He is currently valued at £20m via Transfermarkt.

After arriving in England from Anzhi Makhachkala in 2013, the set-piece-specialist has won the Premier League twice, the Europa League, the FA Cup and League Cup. He also picked up the Copa America trophy with Brazil last year (Transfermarkt).

Despite his age, the 31-year-old hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down, as he has the second-highest WhoScored rating out of all of his teammates. Willian has scored 5 goals and created 5 assists in the Premier League this season, taking 1.9 shots per game, averaging 1.8 key passes, and making 1.9 dribbles on average (WhoScored).

However, it is worth mentioning the South American reportedly earns £120,000-a-week, and Ed Woodward may baulk at his hefty wage demands.

Admittedly, Solskjaer could reinvest the money elsewhere if the board sign the veteran in the summer.

West Ham United: Plenty of fans would love to see Sean Dyche replace Pellegrini

West Ham’s performance in their 3-2 loss against Spurs on Saturday was described as a “disgrace” by Roy Keane on Sky Sports, and many fans must be thinking the same thing. The two Hammers’ goals that came when Spurs were 3-0 up papered over the cracks in a showing that won’t do Manuel Pellegrini any favours.

Football London didn’t rate a single player over 6/10, and even handed two 2/10s to “nervy” goalkeeper Roberto and “weak” Sebastien Haller. Pellegrini is now without a win in eight games across all competitions, and @ExWHUemployee on Twitter has claimed Sean Dyche has approached the Hammers about becoming their next manager.

West Ham news aggregator West Ham Fan Zone posted the news to their followers on Twitter, and the idea of Dyche taking over seemed to go down really well. The vast majority of fans who replied to the tweet thought it’d be a great appointment for the club, even if he’s not a big name like Manuel Pellegrini was when he joined.

You can see some of their reactions to the tweet below:

Celtic fans react to Odsonne Edouard’s nomination for POTY

It’s fair to say Odsonne Edouard has enjoyed a very impressive campaign at Celtic this season.

The Frenchman has been leading the charge for Neil Lennon’s side, as they chase yet ano

ther league title in Scotland. As per Transfermarkt, he has bagged 27 goals in just 45 games across all competitions, including setting up another 19 too.

Such has been the striker’s form, that Premier League side Arsenal have been touted with making a move for him this summer as a potential replacement for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Whether Edouard stays at the club remains to be seen, but the club announced via their official Twitter account that he has been nominated for the Player of the Year award at Celtic.

Fans of the Hoops flocked to the replies section to share their thoughts on Edouard and him potentially taking home the award.

A couple of fans even urged for Edouard to be given a new contract to go along with potentially taking home the award.

It’s no surprise that many Celtic fans are pushing for Edouard to win the Player of the Year award.

The Frenchman has more than replaced former Hoops striker Moussa Dembele, and the interest from Arsenal really goes to show how his performances have gone up a level this campaign.

Man United fans couldn’t get enough of Brandon Williams vs Brighton

Faith in young players has been a recurring theme of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s stint as Manchester United manager, and Brandon Williams has emerged as the latest promising talent to gain from that philosophy.

Benefiting from Luke Shaw’s long-term injury and Ashley Young’s domestic suspension, the 19-year-old got the nod at No.3 in the Red Devils’ Sunday win over Brighton and took his chance to impress with a dogged and determined yet well-rounded performance that prompted rave reviews from the United faithful.

Having recorded the most-tackles and joint-second-most interceptions of any United player against the Seagulls – four and two respectively – some fans were very quick to point out the teenager’s tenacity, one declaring that he “plays like a lion” and another noting the “fire in his belly”.

But this was indeed a multi-dimensional display that saw Williams contribute going forward as well, including a shot from inside the box that must have stung Mat Ryan’s hands even if it was a little too central to cause serious problems.

The England U20 also completed one dribble, created one chance and had a passing accuracy of 85%, which lead United fans to draw comparisons with some of the all-time greats of the left-back trade who were known for their offensive impact – namely United’s very own Patrice Evra and Denis Irwin, as well as Brazilian legend Roberto Carlos.

But perhaps most significantly, Sunday’s performance has seen a number of United fans insist that Williams should hold down the left-back berth going forward, ahead of two far more senior alternatives in Shaw and Young (three including the versatile Marcos Rojo).

Whether Solskjaer will show the same faith in Williams as these United fans remains to be seen – Young is his captain, after all.

But considering David De Gea was the oldest player in his last starting lineup at a mere 29, clearly opportunities for young prospects is still the flavour of the month at Old Trafford.

Charlton’s Conor Gallagher discusses how heart problem has shaped his mentality

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Conor Gallagher has discussed how his heart problems helped to shape his mentality, as reported by The Daily Mail.

What did he say?

Gallagher has made a superb start to life on loan at Charlton Athletic from Chelsea, making 15 starts in the Championship and 1 substitute appearance, scoring 5 goals and assisting 1 more.

He has also been effective in general play, with some of the standout statistics being that he makes 1.9 tackles, 1.6 dribbles and 1.1 interceptions on average.

The 19-year-old even followed this up on the international stage, scoring with a superb strike that helped England U21s to a 3-0 win over Albania on his full debut.

Following that game, he was quoted in The Daily Mail, speaking about the heart operation he had approximately a year ago: “It definitely drives me on because it’s a bit of a scare, isn’t it? It makes you appreciate it more when you’re out there on the pitch playing.

“You have to give 100% because every single one of us is lucky to be here. Ever since it happened, after the surgery, I’ve just wanted to prove myself.

“I’ve come back fitter, stronger. I’ve set myself small targets and I feel that is the better way to do it because I didn’t expect to be starting on Friday night and I did and then did well. I can set more targets.”

Overcoming adversity

It is pretty remarkable that Gallagher is in his current position just a year after having a heart operation and his attitude of turning the experience into motivation is clearly an admirable one.

The impact the teenager has had since joining the Championship side can be summarised by how glowingly Lee Bowyer spoke about him on talkSPORT: “Whatever you tell him he does and I just keep encouraging him to get in the box, and things are falling for him at the moment.

“His willingness and work rate are unreal, so he’s fitted in really well.”

The midfielder has taken his opportunity to impress in senior football so far, and judging by the way he has approached things, it is unlikely he will be slowing down.

Flashback: Frank Lampard must do to Chelsea what Chelsea did for him

In our Transfers that shook the club feature, Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at deals that many may not have seen coming and the impact that they had during their time by using statistical data and pundit remarks.

Frank Lampard became a club legend at Chelsea during his playing days, and is now held in extremely high regard by the Blues faithful as a manager after beginning his tenure in the hotseat with promise.

The 41-year-old midfielder made 648 appearances for Chelsea during his playing days, scoring 210 goals and assisting a further 150. He is widely regarded as one of the best attacking central midfielders of all-time, and certainly one of – if not the – best the Premier League has ever seen.

The ex-England international did not begin his career at Stamford Bridge, however, and this is where it gets interesting in regard to looking towards what he must do in charge of the Blues now. Obviously, Lampard started as a youth team player at London rivals West Ham United, appearing 166 times for the Hammers between 1995-2001.

His performances for the east Londoners earned him a £14m move to Chelsea 18 years ago, in what would prove to be one of the most influential transfers in the club’s history.

Lampard won pretty much all there is to win in club football with Chelsea, including three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups, one Europa League and one Champions League trophy (via Transfermarkt), before moving to Manchester City in 2014 for a brief spell with the Cityzens.

The now 41-year-old also won the Premier League’s Player of the Season award in 2004-05, and regularly managed to score 20+ goals in a season from midfield – no other player in top-flight history has managed to do this as regularly as Lampard did during his career (five seasons in a row).

Still, it wasn’t always like this for the midfielder. Indeed, speaking to the Mirror prior to kicking off his managerial reign in SW6, he spoke of how his mentality changed upon the arrival of a certain Jose Mourinho.

“He brought success to Chelsea, but also for me, personally, because my game went up a few notches,” he said.

“It was mainly about mentality – it was his confidence in me. I was quite within myself when he came, my self-belief wasn’t where it should have been.

“And then in walks this fella with self-belief to burn and to pass on – and he did and I bought into it.

“He was certainly a great man-manager for me and also ahead of the game tactically. He made me think more than maybe I had done before he came.”

Lampard is now manager of his beloved club and has made a good start to life in the Stamford Bridge hot seat. The Blues currently lie fourth in the Premier League table after nine games, while three of the club’s academy graduates – Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori – have been called into the senior England team after impressing for the west Londoners this term; it is all due to Lampard’s trust in youth.

While this is obviously a long-term project considering the number of young players and the recent transfer ban, Lampard does now need to do what Mourinho did for him, just perhaps not as quickly. Mourinho made him a winner, a serial one at that, and that’s exactly what a club like Chelsea demand. Indeed, further into the Lampard era, the club need to win trophies given their stature in the world game and it’s up to Lampard to instil the same kind of belief the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ did to him into his talented young players.

Chelsea is Frank Lampard, and Frank Lampard is Chelsea. His transfer almost two decades ago shook the club more than anyone else has ever done, in the best way possible, and it looks as though their love affair will continue for years to come as the apprentice looks to become the master in west London. If he can help the vast array of youngsters learn to win, the Blues could be onto something special.
