Ange could repeat masterclass with Ghaedi

While Ange Postecoglou’s career as Celtic manager got off to something of a shaky start, with the Bhoys losing both their Champions League qualifying tie against FC Midtjylland and their opening Premiership match against Hearts under the management of the 56-year-old, things have improved 10-fold for the Greek-Australian coach and his side in recent months.

Indeed, Celtic now find themselves on a run of 11 league fixtures without suffering defeat, as well as having turned in a number of extremely impressive performances in the Europa League – including back to back wins over Ferencvaros and a 3-2 victory against Real Betis – despite their ultimate third-place finish in Group G.

Furthermore, a number of Postecoglou’s summer signings have also started to really find their feet in Glasgow, with Benfica loanee Jota having scored eight goals and provided six assists over his 18 appearances for the Hoops, Kyogo Furuhashi bagging 14 goals and five assists over his 24 outings for the Bhoys and centre-back duo Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt averaging extremely impressive SofaScore match ratings of 7.47 and 7.30 in the league respectively.

And, with the January transfer window just around the corner, Celtic are once again being linked with a growing list of players this winter, particularly from what could perhaps be considered as lesser-known leagues – such as the Bhoys’ reported interest in Shabab Al-Ahli winger Mehdi Ghaedi.

Postecoglou could repeat Jota masterclass

Standing at just 5 foot 5 tall, Ghaedi is a forward who burst onto the Iranian football scene back in 2019/20, with the 23-year-old scoring a whopping 10 goals and registering eight assists over his 30 Persian Gulf Pro League appearances for Esteghlal FC, in addition to bagging a further five goals and one assist over 11 outings across the Hazfi Cup, the AFC Champions League and AFC Champions League qualification.

This is form which the £1.08m-rated winger maintained over his 40 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring nine goals and providing nine assists in his side’s 2020/21 campaign, returns which saw him pick up the Persian Gulf Pro League’s young player of the season award.

A £1.38m move to Shabab Al-Ahli followed for the Iran international this summer, with the player who Tasnim News Agency dubbed a “wonderkid” and journalist Reza Khaasteh claimed is the “Iranian Neymar” having already netted three goals and provided one assist over nine UAE Pro League appearances for his new side.

And, with Jota looking as if he will be ruled out until some point in January as a result of a hamstring injury, Postecoglou could well be in the market for a new left-winger this winter.

As such, considering Ghaedi’s obvious potential and more than likely wallet-friendly price tag, the 56-year-old Bhoys boss could well replicate his masterclass of bringing the Benfica loanee to Parkhead with a swoop for the 23-year-old Iranian gem.

Rangers: Joey Veerman ‘definitely’ a target

Joey Veerman ‘remains high’ on Rangers’ list of transfer targets, journalist Pete O’Rourke has told Give Me Sport.

The lowdown

The 23-year-old central midfielder plays for Heerenveen in the Eredivisie. He has two-and-a-half years left on his contract with the club and is valued at £6.3m by Transfermarkt.

Rangers may need to seek replacements if some of their existing midfielders are lured elsewhere. The Gers are braced for January interest in Glen Kamara, while Joe Aribo also has admirers from the Premier League.

The latest

O’Rourke told Give Me Sport that Rangers attempted to bring in Veerman last summer, when Steven Gerrard was still their manager, and that the club’s interest hasn’t subsided.

He wonders if the defender’s Dutch compatriot Giovanni van Bronckhorst might enjoy more success in pursuit of the player, saying: “Veerman will definitely be high on the list of targets. They tried to sign him in the summer and he still remains high on their list of potential targets.

“With van Bronckhorst in there now, I think it just gives extra weight in maybe following up that interest in the Dutchman.”

The verdict

Veerman would arrive at Ibrox with some pretty glowing endorsements. Dutch coach Robert Molenaar has called him ‘extremely good’ on the ball, adding that he plays like he’s ‘on a square in [the village of] Volendam’. Meanwhile, former Rangers defender Michael Ball has said that ‘his numbers are fantastic’.

Ball is right to do so – Veerman has been directly involved in nine goals (scoring three and setting up six) in 15 league appearances in 2021/22. He also ranks in the Eredivisie’s top six for chances created per 90 minutes with 2.4 (via WhoScored).

Hopefully O’Rourke’s suspicion that Van Bronckhorst’s arrival at Rangers could be a substantial step towards persuading the 23-year-old to make the move to Ibrox, especially if Aribo moves south of the border.

Tottenham: Three possible January exits

Dele Alli is among three players who could leave Tottenham Hotspur in January, according to Alasdair Gold for Football London.

The lowdown

Spurs generated just £29.43m from sales during the summer against their £60.21m spend (via Transfermarkt), so in theory, offloading more players in January could generate funds for new manager Antonio Conte to put his stamp on the squad through recruitment.

Dele started Spurs’ first six matches of the new season under Nuno Espirito Santo but hasn’t been named in a Premier League XI since.

The latest

In a Football London Q&A on Monday, Gold namechecked £27m-rated midfielder Dele as he identified players who could be transferred out in the New Year. Harry Winks (valued at £18m by Transfermarkt) and Joe Rodon (£9m) were also tipped for potential mid-season exits, although Gold added that the Wales defender could leave on loan rathe than permanently.

In response to a question on potential January outgoings, the journalist replied: “It depends what the situation is in a month’s time for certain players.

“For instance, if the current situation does not change and there are no injuries in the centre of the park, I’d be surprised if Harry Winks does not want to leave for regular football. The same goes for Joe Rodon, who is not getting the minutes at centre-back in the Premier League.

“There is also the Dele Alli situation and whether Conte sees him as part of his plans going forward and exactly where he fits. He was seven minutes away from making it a hat-trick of half-time substitutions under the past three Spurs head coaches.”

The verdict

Spurs have to beat Group G leaders Rennes in the final round of fixtures to guarantee progression in the Europa Conference League. If they go out of that competition, then there’ll be fewer opportunities, and a reduced need, for the players mentioned by Gold.

Conte is said to have some pretty ambitious plans for January, with one report even mooting a double swoop for Matthijs de Ligt and Stefan de Vrij, and Spurs may need to be ruthless with their squad players for his vision to be realised.

England fume at delayed review

The series turned feisty on the third day at Centurion Park, when England’s No. 8, Stuart Broad, was involved in an ugly on-field exchange with the umpires after being given out lbw following a delayed review from the South Africans

Andrew McGlashan at Centurion18-Dec-2009The series turned feisty on the third day at Centurion Park, when England’s No. 8, Stuart Broad, was involved in an ugly on-field exchange with the umpires after being given out lbw following a delayed review from the South Africans.England have not enjoyed much benefit from the system’s use in this match and Broad’s anger stemmed from the length of time it took for JP Duminy, the bowler, and the captain, Graeme Smith, to call for the opinion of the TV umpire. “Because of the amount of time that the decision took, we just asked the umpires,” said Graeme Swann, who was Broad’s partner at the time. “We didn’t know out in the middle how much time was allowed.”ICC guidelines clearly state that the decision has to be made swiftly. “The total time elapsed between the ball becoming dead and the review request being made should be no more than a few seconds,” the ruling reads. “If the umpires believe that a request has not been made sufficiently promptly, they may at their discretion decline to review the decision.”About 35 seconds elapsed before the third umpire was called in, and when replays showed the ball hitting the stumps, Broad was given out. Before walking off he marched over to Aleem Dar and Steve Davis to remonstrate and was clearly unhappy as he left the field. An England spokesman confirmed they will be taking up their concerns about the delay with match referee Roshan Mahanama, but do not expect Broad to face censure.Initially there was some suggestion that the South Africans had received a signal from the dressing room but this was played down by both sides. “They [the umpires] said they hadn’t seen any signal from the dressing room, so the decision has to stand – and when you’ve seen the replay it was out, so perhaps the review system does work sometimes,” Swann said.”With TV cameras all round the ground, someone has probably picked up something somewhere,” he added. “But as far as the guys in the middle and the team are concerned, we’re certainly not pointing the finger at South Africa, and saying ‘you definitely did it’. We’re just saying that, with the amount of time, there was certainly ample opportunity for maybe a message to get out.”The ICC’s ruling on off-field input is very clear. “If the umpires believe that the captain or batsman has received direct or indirect input emanating other than from the players on the field, then they may at their discretion decline the request for a Player Review. In particular, signals from the dressing room must not be given.”Paul Harris confirmed he hadn’t seen anything come from his dressing room during the delay between the appeal and the review being called. “By the time I got there from the boundary I think AB de Villiers had said to Graeme that we might as well take it,” he said. “I think at one stage Biff [Graeme Smith] wasn’t going to take it and changed his mind. As far as I’m concerned there was no message from the changing room, I don’t think our coaching staff would do that, as it isn’t in the spirit of the game. It was just a late decision from Graeme.”The UDRS has been the centre of attention during this Test. The most controversial decision was when England were convinced they had AB de Villiers caught-behind in the first innings, but replays were inconclusive, although it has worked well in all the other cases it has been used. Still, England clearly aren’t won over just yet.”Certainly the system has a few irregularities that need ironing out quickly if it’s going to be a lasting method for technology to be used in Test cricket,” Swann said. “We’ve seen the issues that need sorting in this game. We hope they’ll be sorted ASAP.”

Parreira, Veiga, VP…

Veio aqui me falar isso.

Claro, me perguntaram. A apresentação é dia 3.

Dilshan thrilled with opening role

Tillakaratne Dilshan has credited his move to the top order as the spark for his outstanding run of form this year, which continued with his match-winning 106 against South Africa

Cricinfo staff23-Sep-2009Tillakaratne Dilshan has credited his move to the top order as the spark for his outstanding run of form this year, which continued with his match-winning 106 against South Africa. Dilshan closed out 2008 batting at No. 6 in the ODI side but began this year as one of Sri Lanka’s preferred openers. The switch has inspired a purple patch for Dilshan, who had only opened three times in his previous 152 one-day internationals. In 2009, he has scored 681 runs at 54.90 including two centuries, and his brilliant effort in the opening Champions Trophy game in Centurion earned him the Man of the Match award.”I have been in good form for the past 12 months and believe moving from the middle order to the top has helped me a lot,” Dilshan said. “As an opener I feel I have more chances to build an innings and Kumar [Sangakkara] and I have developed a wonderful partnership in which we know how to assist each other.”The Dilshan-Sangakkara pairing was again key for Sri Lanka as they put on 158 for the second wicket to leave their side in a commanding position at the halfway mark of their innings. Sri Lanka went on to post 319 for 8 and Sangakkara was full of praise for Dilshan’s 92-ball innings, which finally ended when he was caught on the boundary off Dale Steyn’s bowling.”He’s been exceptional from the end of last year through to this year,” Sangakkara, Sri Lanka’s captain, said. “I think he’s matured a lot and understood how good he really is. He’s performed exceptionally well for us during this time.”The momentum was carried on by the spinner Ajantha Mendis, who grabbed 3 for 30 and removed the important South African trio of Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis and JP Duminy. Sangakkara said it was vital that his side did not relax after one victory and focused on their remaining group matches against New Zealand and England.”Tilla and Ajantha were outstanding but this victory is history now and we must capitalise on it otherwise it will be worthless,” Sangakkara said. “As a side, I feel we are still firing at 75% maybe. So we have a lot of areas to improve, but the good thing is that we’re still winning. But the sky is the limit if we can work harder, make sure we keep to our basics and not get too carried away with wins like this.”

Spurs had three underperfomers against Burnley

As per SofaScore, Tottenham Hotspur trio Ben Davies, Steven Bergwijn and Giovani Lo Celso struggled for Nuno Espirito’s Santo’s side as we analyse the number’s from their 1-0 Carabao Cup victory over Burnley.

Spurs edge into quarter-finals…

Lucas Moura bagged the eventual winner as Spurs edged into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday evening, easing some pressure off the under-fire Nuno following a regrettable week of action.

Defeats to both Vitesse and bitter London rivals West Ham had attracted heavy fire but the Lilywhites’ victory against Burnley ensures they remain fighting on all fronts for now.

Here, we take a take a statistical look at Tottenham’s three worst players from the night with the trio of Davies, Bergwijn and Lo Celso sticking out in particular.

Giving away the ball 50 times, losing 19 duels and spurning one big chance in total, it’s safe to say they didn’t enjoy the best outings.

Steven Bergwijn: 6.4/10

The Dutchman had been one of the Spurs players actually looking revitalised under Nuno at the start of the season, attracting praise from the Portuguese in particular as a ‘very talented’ and ‘unique’ asset.

However, since returning from his injury lay-off, you could make an argument that he hasn’t hit those same heights and it showed against the Clarets last night.

Coming in as Tottenham’s worst player on the night to start and play the majority of the game, being hauled off after 66 minutes, Bergwijn was handed a 6.4/10 match rating having lost possession 17 times whilst losing half of his duels and three in total (SofaScore).

Giovani Lo Celso: 6.7/10

Lo Celso is one player who has attracted criticism over the beginning of 2021/2022 and it’s safe to say his performance was once again in question last night.

The 25-year-old hasn’t evolved into that Christian Eriksen-type creative figure badly needed by Spurs and Nuno with Lo Celso’s numbers, again, hardly worthy of celebration.

He ranked in as Tottenham’s second-worst performer behind Bergwijn, again having started and played the majority against Burnley.

While he did make two key passes in the final third, Lo Celso also spurned a big chance to get on the scoresheet – giving away possession 16 times and losing the vast majority of his duels, seven out of nine to be exact (SofaScore).

 Ben Davies: 6.8/10

The best of the worst, Davies still didn’t particularly enjoy a great evening against Sean Dyche’s men and it would have done little to silence his critics.

The Wales international, being ranked a 6.8/10 and playing the whole game for Tottenham, was dribbled past twice on that flank and lost nine of his duels.

As well as this, Davies gave away the ball 17 times and recorded no accurate long balls or crosses from out wide (SofaScore).

Wolves lose to Crewe in Papa John’s

Lots of Wolves fans have been left fuming as some news emerged involving their Under-21 team.

As shared by the official Twitter page of the Wolves Academy, the Under-21 side lost 3-0 away at Crewe Alexandra in the Papa John’s Trophy, meaning that they have now exited out of the competition.

The result left them in third place in their group, having picked up two losses in total and one draw, only managing to score one goal whilst conceding six in their three games (Sky Sports).

Considering that other Premier League side’s Under-21 teams have flourished in the group stages, such as West Ham United, Aston Villa and Chelsea (Sky Sports), the frustrations of the Molineux faithful are understandable, and questions may now have to be asked of coach James Collins as a result.

Finishing their Papa John’s Trophy campaign winless and bowing out with a lacklustre 3-0 defeat certainly won’t shed much favourable light on the Wolves academy boss with supporters already voicing their displeasure on social media.

Symonds' double blow proves crucial

The IPL final could have gone either way but Andrew Symonds’ back-to-back strikes tilted the balance in favour of Deccan Chargers, according to captain Adam Gilchrist and his Bangalore counterpart Anil Kumble.Chasing a modest 144, Bangalore looked on course for victory until Symonds struck twice in the 15th over, removing both Ross Taylor and Virat Kohli with the second and third deliveries respectively. Gilchrist believed the match was evenly poised until then and congratulated Bangalore on making it a great contest. “I think for us, Pragyan Ojha did really well claiming three crucial wickets but those two wickets in two balls, that really hurts especially when a team is chasing,” Gilchrist said.Kumble agreed that over was the turning point. “On this track, chasing 144 was not a big task and we needed seven runs an over. But losing Taylor and Kohli in two balls hurt,” Kumble said. “Earlier, we lost Rahul [Dravid] and that put the brakes on. We didn’t have partnerships and still were one hit away from a win.”They were also plenty of positives for both captains to dwell on. Gilchrist, who was adjudged the Player of the Tournament, was delighted with the performance of the youngsters in the team and he singled out Harmeet Singh, who took two wickets and a stunning catch, for special praise.”We have a number of youngsters in the side and all of them are eager to learn and grow,” Gilchrist said. “It was amazing to see Harmeet tonight, the way he bowled and then took that amazing catch.”Kumble credited his team-mates for the incredible turnaround in the tournament, having finished second from bottom last season. “Two weeks ago, after the match against Mumbai, we said it was tough to win five in a row and reach the final. I credit my teammates for doing just that and coming so far,” Kumble said. “Of course it was so near and yet so far but it was a good game of cricket today.”He also pointed out that it was a deliberate ploy to open the bowling, since he wanted to get rid of the hard-hitting Gilchrist at the earliest. “If you let someone like Gilchrist get away, he would run away with the match. It was for me to put up my hand and bowl. Fortunately it worked well,” Kumble said.Life came a full circle for Gilchrist and his team following a spectacular reversal of fortunes from the previous season, when they finished at the bottom of the table. Gilchrist felt the lack of pressure had a positive effect on his side.”I really encouraged our team to try to play everything down and fly under the radar if you like, because we were happy with that, without having any expectations on us,” Gilchrist said. “This is only the cricket I play now, so given what we went through last year, this is just a really tremendous effort from the whole franchise to turn it around. It’s just been a great experience.”The first thing I said at the start of our first meeting was, ‘Guys, we’re all in it together’. That was my first line of our first team meeting and yeah, we’re all going to enjoy this together.”He was also full of praise for the way Bangalore scripted a very similar revival against the odds. “I’m thrilled for him (Kumble) and their franchise, the way they turned it around,” Gilchrist said. “They experienced a lot of the pain and disappointment that we went through last year.”

Hammarby 1-2 Rangers B in Youth League

Lots of Glasgow Rangers fans have been left buzzing over some news involving their B team.

As per the official website of the Ibrox faithful, the side progressed into the next round of the UEFA Youth League after a 2-1 win away at Hammarby in Stockholm, giving them a 5-1 overall aggregate win after beating them 3-0 at home.

Robbie Ure and Ross McCausland were the players who scored for the Light Blues, as they will now play Septemvri of Bulgaria in the next round of the competition.

The B side have been progressing well since they were made, and their progress will be something that Steven Gerrard keeps his eye on as he looks to add some talented Academy players into his squad.

Nonetheless, it is good to see so many Teddy Bears supporters taking an interest in the youngsters and their results.
