Carberry duck as Shah helps easy win

Hampshire claimed a quite unexpectedly straightforward victory even though Michael Carberry, so often their match-winning performer in limited-overs cricket, was out of sorts.

ScorecardOwais Shah made an unbeaten half-century against his old county•Getty ImagesHampshire claimed a quite unexpectedly straightforward victory even though Michael Carberry, so often their match-winning performer in limited-overs cricket, was out of sorts. Doubtless he would wish to have another innings in the one-day series between England and Sri Lanka but Hampshire did not even have to seek his release from involvement at Lord’s. Given that Alastair Cook was properly fit again, he was indeed surplus to international requirements. So Carberry journeyed back to the south coast, only to prod around the crease uncertainly even before he swung Matt Salisbury to deep-square leg. He had not scored. Fortunately for Hampshire, who know their conditions and not least a slow pitch, James Vince is in rather better form. Jimmy Adams, free from the responsibilities of captaincy in this form of the game, was soon driving through the covers to good effect and Owais Shah was in the touch of his salad days. His unbeaten half-century included three fours and three sixes against Essex, his former county. An unattractive lunge at the same bowler resulted in Adams’ dismissal, the ball spooning up to midwicket, but Vince, who may well be regarded as a better bet for England – both in the one-day game and Test cricket – in the years to come, reached a half century off 42 balls with three fours and two sixes, altogether making batting appear a more simple affair than anything that had gone before. Shah, whose fielding earlier had not been altogether sound, gave him ideal support. One swept six off Salisbury was worth the admission in itself. Hampshire won with as many as 16 balls to spare. On a sluggish pitch on which the ball initially did not come onto the bat – although bowlers such as Matt Coles are so adept at slower deliveries these days that it is not always easy to gauge – Essex fell some 30 runs short of what they would have reckoned on achieving. Put in, they only properly dominated a varied attack when Ben Foakes was in partnership with James Foster.Foakes is talented, make no mistake. Even if one did, Graham Gooch, who rates him highly, would correct anyone uninformed. One extra cover drive off Danny Briggs, who was bowling with customary control, was the classiest shot of the innings. When he fell through a leading edge that was held at mid-off, he had made 43 off 34 balls.Foster, whose six over extra-cover off Sean Ervine was the best improvised shot of the night, was unbeaten with 29 from as many balls when Essex ran out of overs. Indeed, the final blow, a pulled six by Tim Phillips off Coles, who might perhaps have been better off completing his spell from the Pavilion end, where he had maintained exemplary control, gave the total more of a respectable look.Other than that, Jesse Ryder was soon caught at third man, Tom Westley swung across the line at Briggs and was bowled, Mark Pettini was bowled by Will Smith lying back and attempting to drive through the off side ring, and Greg Smith was stumped by Adam Wheater off Briggs. Not a particularly distinguished innings, but then run-making appeared to be an exacting task at times. At least it did until Vince came to the wicket. The margin of victory was quite beyond what Essex would have anticipated, given they were unbeaten in this south group. For Hampshire, there is no over-reliance on Carberry.

Sri Lanka Cricket sent its top team to the World T20, but player contracts remained unsigned on the eve of their departure to Bangladesh

The players leave for the World T20, although the contracts remain unsigned

Sri Lanka’s top team departed for the World Twenty20 in Bangladesh on Sunday morning, but the standoff over player contracts persisted, and will now likely only be resolved when the team returns. A board official had offered players an opportunity to sign when the team assembled at SLC’s Maitland Place offices at 4am on Sunday, but the players had refused.*The players had met late on Saturday to discuss their position, but although SLC had issued threats of sending a second-string team to the World T20 earlier in the day, the players maintained their opposition to a contract that does not feature a percentage cut of the payment SLC receives for the team’s participation in global tournaments. On Saturday night, SLC CEO Ashley de Silva indicated the board was content to defer contract negotiations. “If they don’t sign it before they leave, I suppose we will look at it again when they come back,” he said.SLC stands to gain most from its cricketers playing in the tournament unsigned. The board is no longer bound to pay the $500,000 flat fee, nor the two-tiered incentive payments it had offered as part of its revised offer, which was a partial sop to the players’ demand for 20% of the gross sum received by SLC for tournament participation. As had happened in 2012, when contracts were not signed until mid-July, the players may not even receive match fees or regular salaries as long as the contracts remain unsigned. These funds are likely to be retroactively credited when the contracts are agreed to, however. The players had softened their demands by the eve of their departure, asking for 12% of the tournament fee. The ICC is expected to pay SLC approximately $8.9 million for the World T20, meaning the figure the players had held out for, was about $1.07 million. The difference between the guaranteed flat fee the board offered and the percentage sought by the players amounts to about $570,000 for the tournament. But beyond those sums, the players’ objection to SLC’s proposal is largely driven by the belief they are due a percentage of the ICC payment, primarily as compensation for the use of their images in promotional material for global tournaments.Sri Lanka’s players had received a cut of the ICC event fee from 2003 to 2012, until the board struck that payment from player contracts last year. The players’ grievances are also fueled by the complaint that they are being penalised for the administrators’ misuse of finances. The board had run up debts of almost $70 million when they built two new stadia and renovated a third for the 2011 World Cup. Player payment has caused strife at the beginning of every 12-month contracts cycle since then. The present standoff is also believed to have caused conflict within the board. President Jayantha Dharmadasa had been sympathetic to the players’ concerns, but was outmuscled in the board room by an opposing faction.*0600GMT, March 16: The article was updated with the latest on the contracts issues

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Jan-2014Two county academy players, Gavin Main and Andrew Umeed, have been selected in Scotland’s squad for the Under-19 World Cup. Fast bowler Main, who recently signed for Durham, and Warwickshire batsman Umeed were among the 15-man squad, which will be led by Ross McLean and also includes 16-year-old spinner Ryan Brown.McLean, Main and Umeed, along with Nick Farrar, will all be playing in their second U-19 World Cup. 'No guarantee' Clarke will be fit for Brisbane

Clarke doubtful for Brisbane Test

Australia’s captain Michael Clarke has conceded he is far from guaranteed to be fit in time for the first Ashes Test in Brisbane next month, as his chronic back trouble grows increasingly stubborn.Having been ruled out of the limited overs tour to India that precedes the home series against England, Clarke showed unusual pessimism about his fitness when discussing his chances of returning to full strength and flexibility in time for the Gabba. There were grim tidings also from James Pattinson, who had originally hoped to recover from a back stress fracture he picked up in England in time to contend for a Brisbane pace berth.Instead he admitted he was now well behind that schedule, and was looking at a place in the Perth Test as one of four fast bowlers as his earliest chance to resume in Test matches.Since returning home from England, Clarke has undergone daily treatment on his back, and between now and the start of the Ashes the Australian team physio Alex Kountouris is readying himself to make frequent flights from Melbourne to Sydney to spend as much time as possible with his most pivotal patient. However the process of constant work to strengthen Clarke has been progressing slowly, and there is always the danger of a relapse such as the one that curtailed his Champions Trophy campaign before the Ashes in England.”There’s certainly no guarantee at this stage,” Clarke said at the national team’s pre-season camp in Sydney. “It’s hard for me to say that because I’m trying my best not to look at it like that. I’m always positive and if they ask me, I’ll say I’ll be fit in a week’s time. But you ask Alex who knows me very well, and he’d say there’d be doubt I won’t be right. Making sure I’m doing everything I can to give myself the best chance … plenty of rehab and recovery getting strength back in the areas that support my back. It’s a lot of hard work but I’m willing to do the work to make sure I’m right for that first Test.”Where I sit right now is I don’t know when I’ll be back playing cricket. We have no idea how long it’s going to take. But in Australia I’ve got the physio in Sydney I’ve been working with since I was 17, I’ve got the machine, the medics machine that’s helped me stay on the park for as long as I have through my career, and I’m in consistent contact with Alex Kountouris who will fly back and forth from Melbourne to Sydney to see me and make sure I’m improving.”Clarke’s ideal preparation for the Gabba will be to regain full mobility in time to play in the Sheffield Shield matches scheduled to lead-in to the Ashes, granting him the chance to gain confidence and batting form before facing England’s pacemen once more. “My best preparation has always been to play cricket and score runs doesn’t matter what form of the game,” Clarke said. “If I’m playing games of cricket and performing that helps me take it into one day cricket or test cricket. I probably train harder than what you have to do in game so playing is probably easier for me mentally and physically with the work that goes into it.”Pattinson had fought back tears when his Ashes campaign in England was ended during the Lord’s Test by back pain that was revealed to be a fracture. While speaking more happily with the benefit of a few months in the recovery room, he is yet to resume running let alone bowling, and remains a long distance from fitness.”I’m not even running yet which is not great,” Pattinson said. “I get a scan in two weeks time which is a 12 week scan to determine whether the fracture has healed or not. Go from there, get results back from scan start running, should be fine. My back feels fine at the moment, I have no pain. Just a bit of a long process. I’m probably a month off bowling.”I won’t be back for the first Test, don’t think I’ll be right for the second … but all things going well I could push for that WACA Test. If it’s a bit green we could play four quicks up there, but I’ll know more when I start bowling. I’m probably rushing a bit if I’m trying to get back for that first Test and last thing I want is for that to happen again and push my body too far and it’s hard enough going through it once without going through it again. Long term is where I’m looking.”

Rashid and fourth seamer remain concerns but GT 'not massively off' ahead of playoffs

The gaps in the bowling line up have “been really camouflaged by their great batting,” Varun Aaron says

ESPNcricinfo staff23-May-20251:47

What’s ailing Rashid Khan?

Gujarat Titans (GT) have now lost four matches in IPL 2025. In two of those, they have fallen short chasing mammoth targets – Punjab Kings (PBKS) scored 243 for 5 early on in the script, and on Thursday night, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) put up 235 for 2. The other two times, their high-powered batting line-up, in hindsight, put up below-par totals. To Varun Aaron, the issue when GT have lost has been their third (fourth) seamer, which “has been camouflaged by their great batting”.On Thursday, Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada and Prasidh Krishna were their main seamers. Arshad Khan was the fourth, and he went for 36 runs in his three overs. Only Rashid Khan was more expensive. Overall this season, Prasidh and Siraj – as well as Rashid and R Sai Kishore – have played all their 13 games, while Arshad (eight games, ER 9.21), Ishant Sharma (seven games, ER 11.18) and Kulwant Khejroliya (one game, ER 9.66) have filled in intermittently.”I think the biggest problem GT have had throughout the whole season and that’s been really camouflaged by their great batting is their third [or fourth] seamer,” Aaron said on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out show. “Ishant Sharma was in and out. He was really expensive. Arshad Khan, again, was in and out, came back in now. Khejroliya played one game. So I think teams are going to look to go really hard against that third seamer.Related

  • Marsh jumps to fourth spot on Orange Cap table after century

  • The middle-order silver lining in Gujarat Titans' heavy defeat

“If they get a lot of runs against the third seamer, then Prasidh Krishna comes [in early] and goes a little searching for wickets because he has been that guy who has gotten them wickets. Exactly what happened today – the third seamer has gone for runs, and throughout the tournament that’s been a pattern.”The bigger concern for GT, seeing that they have had Prasidh and Siraj doing well, might be Rashid. Never before has he been as expensive as he has been this season, going at 9.38 for his eight wickets. Before this season, the poorest economy rate Rashid had ever recorded in the IPL was 8.40 in 2024. Between 2017 and 2022, he had never gone at more than 6.73 in a season. On Thursday, perhaps in acknowledgement of his poor returns this season, Rashid was brought into the attack only in the 12th over, when Mitchell Marsh was closing in on his century. Sai Kishore had bowled two overs by then. By the end, the two had combined returns of 5-0-70-1. The wicket – of Aiden Markram – wasn’t against Rashid’s name.2:18

Aaron: ‘GT have a problem with their third seamer pick’

“It was late. Normally you see Rashid come in when you’re in desperate need to strike. But that tells you maybe something about where the confidence is when it comes to Rashid Khan at the moment, not only from his own personal point of view, but also the captaincy’s point of view. You know, we’re not going to introduce him too early,” Tom Moody, Aaron’s co-panellist, said. “But Sai Kishore, you can’t take too much away from him. He got the nod ahead of Rashid. He’s still a very crafty bowler. But he was hit by a tidal wave today.”He [Rashid] has taken time to find his rhythm again. Any bowler, whether you are a spinner or a pace bowler, coming back from a significant back surgery, it takes time. It’s not only the mechanical side of things, it’s confidence as well, that comes with that.”Aaron appeared to have spotted a specific problem in Rashid’s bowling, caused, perhaps, by the surgery in late 2023. “If you look at his action, he’s one of those bowlers where there’s a lot of lateral flexion, and he really has to get the arm at the optimal position to bowl that fast googly. I don’t think his googly is shooting off the wicket that fast anymore, which used to really surprise batsmen.”One other puzzle about GT’s make-up on Thursday was the presence of Rabada in the XI ahead of Gerald Coetzee. Coetzee has played only two games and Rabada, who left after the first couple of games to serve a drug ban before returning recently, four. More importantly, Coetzee has an economy rate of 7.66 to Rabada’s 11.57. Even more importantly, Rabada won’t be around for the IPL playoffs. Coetzee will be.2:27

Are GT in danger of losing out on a top-two spot?

“I would have thought that was definitely worth exploring,” Moody said. “Unless there’s some injury issue that we don’t know, or illness. It would make sense that you’d have a look at him.”All said, Moody wasn’t unduly worried about GT, who are still the table-toppers, though second-placed Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who have a game in hand, are just one point behind.”I wouldn’t say they are massively off. We know Rashid Khan has taken time to get back to his best, and he’s still not there post his surgery. If I was in GT’s shoes, I wouldn’t be reading too much into this game,” Moody said. “There are some obvious areas they need to just sharpen up a little bit, but… it’s one of those situations where you’ve been playing really good cricket and if you look back too hard at a loss at this stage of a season, you could get a little lost in a negative space.”I think they are better off just trying to take positives moving forward, because we are right at the pointy end of the business and the last thing you want to be doing is over-analysing certain issues. And I am sure the likes of Rashid Khan is doing everything in his powers to recapture that consistency, which we’ve seen before, but there’s no doubt that his effectiveness, particularly against right-handers, which is normally where he has dominated, has been a real struggle.”

Eagles hold on for thrilling draw

A century from Chamu Chibhabha and an unbeaten knock of 80 from wicketkeeper Regis Chakabva helped Mashonaland Eagles secure a draw in a thrilling finish

ScorecardChamu Chibhabha’s century on the final day kept Mashonaland Eagles in hunt of a win, but wickets pegged them back•Zimbabwe CricketA fighting century from Chamu Chibhabha and an unbeaten knock of 80 from wicketkeeper Regis Chakabva helped Mashonaland Eagles secure a draw in a thrilling finish against Matabeleland Tuskers in Harare. Chasing 288, Chibhabha’s wicket, which fell 14.2 overs before stumps on the final day, sparked a collapse and Eagles slipped from at 192 for 4 to 218 for 7. Tuskers picked two more wickets, the ninth in the last over of the match, but could not take the final one.The match, over the course of four days, had been evenly contested, with no team scoring more than 269 or less than 250 in any innings. After scoring 268 in the first innings, led by half-centuries from Sean Williams and Bilal Shafayat, Tuskers had reduced Eagles to 55 for 5. Seamer Glen Querl had done most of the damage, taking four of the five wickets. The captain Stuart Matsikenyeri and Chakabva rescued Eagles with a 148-run stand, scoring 78 and 79 respectively. The Eagles were eventually bowled out 18 runs short of their opponents’ score, with seamer Keegan Meth taking six wickets.Tuskers put on a commanding batting performance in their second dig, with another fifty from Shafayat, and decent contributions of 44, 44, 38 and 31 from four of their other top-order batsmen. They declared on 269 for 6 on the final day, before a spirited chase from Eagles looked likely to achieve the target. But left-arm spinner Williams turned the game around with three quick wickets, and the match ended with Tuskers one wicket short of achieving a win.

Sohag Gazi picked in Bangladesh ODI squad

Bangladesh have included batsman Naeem Islam, offspinner Sohag Gazi and fast bowler Rubel Hossain in the 14-man squad for the first two ODIs of the five-match series against West Indies, which begins on November 30. Fast bowler Shafiul Islam also returns to one-day internationals, having recovered from the shoulder injury he picked up while fielding in the Asia Cup in March.Abul Hasan, fresh off his record-breaking century at No. 10 in the Tests, was also picked.Success in the first Test against West Indies propelled Naeem, Gazi and Rubel into the squad: Naeem scored a first-innings century, Gazi finished with a match-haul of nine and Rubel claimed the wickets of Chris Gayle and Darren Bravo on return from injury. Naeem is back in the one-day squad for the first time since playing against Pakistan in December last year, the same series in which Rubel too played his last ODI before picking up an injury. Those who missed out from Bangladesh’s last ODI assignment, the Asia Cup, include Nazimuddin, Elias Sunny, Imrul Kayes, Nazmul Hossain and Shahadat Hossain. In his last appearance for Bangladesh, Sunny conceded 36 runs from three overs in the first match against New Zealand. Kayes had won a place in the Asia Cup squad after a good domestic season in 2011-12, but fell away again, much like Nazimuddin who had played the Asia Cup but had an ordinary time. Pace bowler Shahadat’s nightmare performance in the Asia Cup final would have certainly played a part in his non-selection.Both Bangladesh and West Indies will play a warm-up game each ahead of the series, and the board also announced the BCB XIs that will play these games.Squad for the first two ODIs: Mushfiqur Rahim (capt & wk), Mahmudullah, Tamim Iqbal, Anamul Haque, Jahurul Islam, Naeem Islam, Shakib Al Hasan, Nasir Hossain, Sohag Gazi, Abdur Razzak, Abul Hasan, Rubel Hossain, Masrafe Bin Mortaza, Shafiul Islam.BCB XI for Bangladesh practice game on Nov 27: Imrul Kayes, Mominul Haque, Asif Ahmed, Marshall Ayub, Jahurul Islam, Elias Sunny, Farhad Reza, Ziaur Rahman, Al-Amin Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Enamul Haque Jr, Soumya Sarker.BCB XI for West Indies practice game on Nov 28: Imrul Kayes, Mominul Haque, Asif Ahmed, Anamul Haque, Jahurul Islam, Elias Sunny, Farhad Reza, Ziaur Rahman, Al-Amin Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Enamul Haque Jr, Soumya Sarker.
