Samuels wanted to finish India tour, Bravo 'shocked'

Adding a new twist to West Indies’ pullout from their India tour, Dwayne Bravo, their ODI captain, has said he is “shocked” at statements by team-mate Marlon Samuels, who indicated earlier this week that he had not wanted to quit during the series

Nagraj Gollapudi25-Oct-2014Adding a new twist to West Indies’ pullout from their India tour, Dwayne Bravo, their ODI captain, has said he is “shocked” at statements by team-mate Marlon Samuels, who indicated earlier this week that he had not wanted to quit during the series. In an interview to a Caribbean radio station, Samuels said that since he is not accredited with the West Indies Players Association, he wanted to focus on finishing the India tour before raising any objections concerning the collective bargaining agreement and memorandum of understanding signed between the WIPA and the WICB.Samuels told that his priority was West Indies cricket. “Wavell Hinds (the WIPA president) cannot negotiate on behalf of me so I know that once I continued (to play), I just needed to finish this tour and then I would have asked questions,” Samuels said. “The main thing first was West Indies cricket; that is why I remained focused throughout everything.”Samuels was the highest run-getter in the abandoned series with 254 runs, including two centuries in the three possible ODIs. According to Samuels, he was present only during two of the eight player meetings Bravo headed on the tour. “For most of those meetings, I was probably in my room ordering room service. I don’t go to those meetings,” Samuels said. “A lot of meetings were kept but I have no time for those meetings. My focus was just on playing some cricket.”However, Bravo countered Samuels, saying the Jamaican was an “interested party” and spoke “vigorously” during the meetings he attended. “I note the comments attributed to Mr. Marlon Samuels from media reports and wish to state that Mr. Samuels was invited to and did attend the majority of meetings with the players on tour,” Bravo said in a media statement issued on Friday. “We extended an invitation to Mr. Marlon Samuels with the full knowledge that he is not a member of WIPA but was an interested party. Mr. Samuels contributed vigorously to the discussions held and indicated clearly, at that time, that he would stand with any decision taken by the team. I am therefore shocked to see the statements, if true, that have been attributed to Mr. Samuels.”

“Wavell Hinds (the WIPA president) cannot negotiate on behalf of me so I know that once I continued (to play), I just needed to finish this tour and then I would have asked questions. The main thing first was West Indies cricket; that is why I remained focused throughout everything.”Marlon Samuels

According to Bravo, the decision to quit the tour was taken “in concert with all members of the squad” and not solely by him. “I wish to state for the record that all correspondence sent and decisions taken were with the full agreement and consent of the players on tour including the current Test captain Mr. Denesh Ramdin and the T20 captain Mr. Darren Sammy. It was agreed that someone needed to correspond with WIPA after we were presented with the match/tour contract in India when it became evident that the terms and conditions were very different from what we were accustomed to and expected. The team members met and I, as captain, was nominated and accepted the responsibility to correspond on behalf of the players on tour and I will continue to do so as designated.”Bravo said that the players, barring Samuels, have decided to pursue the issue through legal help going forward. “We do not wish to make any further statements on this matter since the players on tour (except Mr. Samuels) with some additional players who did not tour India have appointed counsel to represent them in this matter.”The deadlock between the players, the WIPA and the WICB has resulted in fears being privately expressed by other Full Members, who are not afraid to work out alternatives to West Indies if Bravo and co. fail to resolve the issue. However, Bravo expressed optimism when he said: “We look forward to a speedy resolution and that our concerns, and that of all players including the first-class players, are addressed in a satisfactory and timely manner.”According to Bravo, though the WIPA had laid out a new payment structure for the international players during its annual general meeting on February 1, it has not shared the new agreement, which was signed with the WICB in September, with the players. Having failed to get a convincing response from Hinds, Bravo and his team-mates approached the WICB to communicate with them directly. However, Dave Cameron, the WICB president, said he would only communicate with the players through the WIPA under the rules of the MoU. Infuriated at the WICB stance, Bravo and the rest of the West Indies squad quit the India tour after the fourth ODI, drawing the ire of the BCCI and the cricketing fraternity at large.

Canberra to host BBL final

The emergence of Canberra’s Manuka Oval as an increasingly significant cricket venue in Australia will continue this summer after Cricket Australia announced the ground would host the BBL final

The emergence of Canberra’s Manuka Oval as an increasingly significant cricket venue in Australia will continue this summer after Cricket Australia announced the ground would host the BBL final. In an unexpected move, Cricket Australia decided that the neutral venue would be appropriate for the decider on January 28, after giving hosting rights in previous years to the highest-placed finalist.Although it will be a busy summer for cricket in Australia, the final will be played more than two weeks before the first World Cup match in Australia. Two matches, including the final, in the ODI tri-series will be played at the WACA on January 30 and February 1. The BBL final will follow semi-finals that will be played in other cities around the country.”We have looked at a number of options for hosting the final of the Big Bash League, given the unique summer of international cricket that lies ahead and the significant demands that will place on venues around the country,” Mike McKenna, CA’s executive general manager of operations, said. “That consideration, combined with our efforts to further establish the BBL as a truly national competition, was part of our decision making.”We think the concept of staging the final in the neutral territory of the nation’s capital has merit. Manuka Oval has undergone significant work in recent times to upgrade facilities for fans. We think it can provide a great backdrop to the biggest match of the tournament while exposing a new market to the excitement of the league.”Manuka Oval has become a popular venue with Cricket Australia in recent years: in February 2013, it hosted Australia for a one-day international for the first time, and another between Australia and South Africa is scheduled there for November 19 this year. The ground will also host three World Cup matches in February and March. The required handover of World Cup venues to the ICC on January 31 was also a factor in the choice of a neutral venue in advance, rather than having numerous potential grounds preparing for a match not guaranteed. “With some grounds around the country unavailable at the time of the final, combined with the busy international summer which includes ICC Cricket World Cup preparations, the neutral venue of Canberra was identified as the most suitable location to host the BBL final,” a CA spokesperson said. For the past three seasons, the BBL finals have been held at the WACA after the Perth Scorchers earned hosting rights. Christina Matthews, the chief executive officer of the WACA, said she was disappointed that there would be no possibility of the Scorchers hosting the final again this summer.”Whilst we are disappointed to have not been given the rights to host the final, we are comfortable that, given CA’s desire to hold the final in a neutral venue, they have chosen a truly neutral venue and not another team’s ground,” Matthews said.”With ‘The Furnace’ having hosted the last three finals, it was maybe the only way for CA to have the match played on the other side of the country and it is a credit to WA cricket that they weren’t willing to take the risk for the fourth year in a row.”Manuka Oval has undergone significant work in recent years, including the installation of light towers and funding to resurface the playing area and add new seating. It hosted the Sheffield Shield final earlier this year after New South Wales won hosting rights but were unable to play at the SCG due to a Major League Baseball game being played there.

Sunrisers look for bowling boost

Big PictureFirst points are always good. But just a day after registering their first win in this IPL, Sunrisers Hyderabad are faced with the worrying prospect of facing a red-hot Chennai Super Kings machinery that, just like every season, is steam-rolling other teams into submission. Sunrisers’ top three clicked for the first time in the match against Delhi Daredevils, bettering their previous-best total of this season by 51 runs, but life is not likely to be as comfortable against the yellows.Shikhar Dhawan, Aaron Finch and David Warner, all got vital runs to boost their confidence but there were extended periods in the match against Daredevils when they looked short on fluency. The good news for Sunrisers is that they rode those spells as how the three perform against the impressive trio of Super Kings seamers and their steady spinners is going to be critical for them.More important perhaps is going to be how Sunrisers’ bowlers deal with Super Kings’ batsmen. The sight of Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum can send sepulchral chill waves among bowlers early, so a lot will depend on if Dale Steyn raises his game a notch. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been impressive and can draw on the success he had against Smith in the recent World T20 match. Big efforts will also be needed from their stars from last season – legspinners Amit Mishra and Karn Sharma.Super Kings, on the other hand, are a confident bunch. Their batting is firing, their bowling doesn’t have any weaknesses their fielding remains one of the best in the tournament and they have never lost a game to Sunrisers. They just need to ensure no complacency sets in.Watch out forAmit Mishra spun an un-breachable web around batsmen during the recent Asia Cup and in the first round of matches in the World T20, fuelling questions about why he was not regular in the national side in the first place. But after overstepping once during the semi-final against South Africa, something has gone amiss. He is not able to control the flow of runs. He went wicketless against Daredevils and was torn apart in the match before that too. It’s a big game now and Dhawan needs his trump card to find his mojo again.Faf du Plessis is the only Super Kings batsman in top four not to score a half-century till now. But apart from one match – against Rajasthan Royals – the lack of runs from his bat hasn’t really affected the team as the openers have been brilliant. There is no immediate threat to his place in the team – MS Dhoni likes to stick to his XI – but du Plessis needs some runs to fortify the team’s batting further.Stats and trivia Amit Mishra is one short of becoming the only second bowler in the IPL to collect 100 wickets. The only other bowler to do so is Lasith Malinga Chennai Super Kings have picked up 30 wickets, the most this season. Royal Challengers Bangalore are second, with 20 wickets.

PCB accepts Miandad's resignation

The PCB has relieved Javed Miandad from his services as director general after he had asked to quit last week

The Pakistan Cricket Board has relieved director general Javed Miandad from his services after he had asked to quit last week. Miandad’s’ resignation had been pending for the last few days and the PCB management committee, after much deliberation, decided to release one of their most expensive employees.”The members have respected Javed Miandad’s wishes by accepting his resignation with immediate effect,” Subhan Ahmed, PCB’s chief operating officer, told reporters at the National Cricket Acadamy in Lahore. “The MC has recognised and applauded Miandad’s achievements, contributions, and services not only to the PCB but also to the game of cricket.”Miandad was appointed as director general back in November 2008 but quit after two months due to differences with the board over the scope of his role. He returned to the post after a brief period and had since been working with the board. The post of director general had no prior existence in the PCB constitution and was created by Ejaz Butt in 2008 to employ Miandad. The position, however, lacked clarity and in his five-year stint, Miandad spoke openly of it being a troubleshooting role of sorts, delving into whatever areas needed fixing. He wanted to oversee the cricketing affairs and was keen to revamp the domestic structure. He had even unveiled plans for restructuring, but with Butt at the helm of the PCB, Miandad was cornered.Zaka Ashraf had given Miandad a formal administrative role to oversee domestic and international cricket, but his contribution had always remained diminished. Following uncertainty in the PCB top management in recent months, Miandad had even less work on his plate. The ongoing domestic structure in which two first-class tournaments had been introduced in 2012 was instigated by Miandad, but the PCB overhauled even this by separating the regional and department sides. With Miandad’s resignation, the PCB has decided to scrap the post of director general that has cost them more than Rs 50 million in the last five years.

Clarke's Ashes warning for batsmen

As he delivered a series of reassurances that a degenerative back condition would not hobble his forthcoming Ashes campaign, Australia’s captain Michael Clarke issued a stern reminder that the tourists’ promising pace battery would be rendered useless without sufficient runs to defend. The announcement of an Australian Ashes squad stocked to the hilt with pace bowlers of quality, plus the scheduling of the first two Tests at the seam and swing friendly surfaces of Trent Bridge and Lord’s, has contributed a sense of quiet optimism to many Antipodean observers of the game.Clarke, though, was frank in reminding his batsmen that they would have to find ways of constructing decent tallies if that bowling strength is to become meaningful. It was a lesson demonstrated during the ODI series between the two countries in England last year, when Australia’s bowlers looked tame by comparison with their English counterparts – despite helpful conditions – when given few runs to defend.”We’ve got a good attack, there’s no doubt about it. The squad of quicks we have is a really good combination. They gel well together, they’re all a little bit different,” Clarke said. “But there’s the other side. As batters we’ve got to put runs on the board, it’s no good giving our attack 150 runs to bowl at. So as batters we have a huge responsibility and a big job to make sure we’re getting 350, getting 400 and putting those runs on the board, and I’m very confident if we can select the best attack we can have some success over there.”Clarke also disputed the possibility of England winning the series on dry, turning pitches prepared in the wake of Australia’s 4-0 rout by India in February and March, instead noting that the overhead conditions had always been a more critical factor in how batsmen and bowlers fared than the surfaces themselves.”I think conditions more in the air play a bigger part in England than what you see on the surface. If the sun’s out generally the wickets in England are very good for batting. If it’s overcast, it doesn’t matter how dry the wicket is, you get a lot of swing and some seam in the UK. I don’t think you can plan too much over there. I think England will use their strengths in their conditions. We’ll be able to adapt, we’ve got Nathan Lyon, hopefully I can bowl a few part-timers as well. We’ll find a way.”As part of his extended rehabilitation from the back and hamstring injuries that ruled him unfit for a Test match for the first time since his debut in 2004, Clarke recently completed a two-week training camp in the southern highlands of New South Wales with his trainer Duncan Kerr. Clarke said the recipe for his return to full fitness had not been any dramatic change in his regimen, but rather a tightening of its monitoring by the national team physio Alex Kountouris and others.”I’ve used the experts around me,” Clarke said. “Alex Kountouris, the Australian physio, has been fantastic and he’s been monitoring my program. In regards to my back it’s the daily maintenance I do … I’ve had another two-week boot camp with Duncan Kerr, we went away to my property there and trained really hard.”So my preparation in regards to last year has been very similar, but it’s been monitored extra closely by the support staff to make sure I’m getting the strength I need, and to make sure I’m well prepared to play the whole 12 months.”I’m confident it’ll be no different to what it has been through my career. I’ve managed to play 90-odd Test matches and only miss one through my career. That’s a big part of why preparation is so important for me, I need to make sure I’m fit, need to make sure I’m not carrying too much weight, I need to make sure I’m putting in the work to be fit in eight or 12 months’ time.”Clarke has also been a regular visitor to the Centre of Excellence in Brisbane, where those Ashes squad members not waylaid by the IPL or already in England have trained on well-grassed pitches and used the Dukes ball that will be a key player in the series to come.”It’s more just getting used to facing a different ball to a Kookaburra,” Clarke said. “With your bowling action hanging on to the ball, catching and fielding as well, just because the ball is a little bit different to what we’re used to in Australia.”We’re disappointed with our most recent results in India, we know that’s unacceptable as an Australian cricket team, and we’ve been working hard to try to turn that around. All I can ask for from the boys is to continue to prepare as well as we can, and give it a red hot crack. We know we’re playing against a very good team in their own back yard. Test cricket in my eyes will always be the pinnacle, and playing against England in England is as big as it gets.”Clarke was speaking in Sydney, where Cricket Australia announced the upgrade of their longtime sponsor Commonwealth Bank to become the major partner of the Test team and home Test series, following their previous commercial support of ODIs and continued backing of the Southern Stars women’s team and grassroots cricket over 26 years.

David Boon calls time on 14-year career as match referee

Boon officiated in 87 Tests, 190 ODIs and 119 T20Is (including seven women’s T20Is)

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Apr-2025David Boon, the former Australia batter, has ended his 14-year career as an ICC match referee on Wednesday, with the second Bangladesh-Zimbabwe Test in Chattogram his final assignment. Boon officiated in 87 Tests, 190 ODIs and 119 T20Is (including seven women’s T20Is).Boon, 64, is now set to don a new hat as a board director at Cricket Australia (CA), with whom he’d been previously associated as national selector. Prior to his association with the ICC as a match referee, Boon had also served in the administration at Cricket Tasmania for 12 years following a 12-year international career.”It is with mixed emotions that I finish my time as a match referee with the ICC,” Boon said in a statement. “It has been an incredible honour and pleasure to be a part of this journey spanning nearly 14 years. I am grateful for the opportunity, including the challenges, the many cherished memories and friendships I’ve made along the way.”I feel privileged to have stayed so connected to our great game, witnessing international cricket from such close quarters. I hope that I leave having made a difference and contributed to officiating the world game. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the ICC and Cricket Australia for their support over the years in this chapter of my involvement in the game.”As Boon stepped aside formally, he touched upon a few areas of opportunity at the ICC with regard to the rules. “I’m not sure about the over-rates, whether we’ve got that right,” he said. “Pace of play can be an issue. And I’d hope from an administrative point of view we have a massive umbrella over cricket, and every nation looks at themselves as being under that umbrella form rather than their own little pieces of turf.”Boon’s career as a player stretched from 1984 to 1996. He won four Ashes titles as a player, and one 50-over World Cup in 1987, a tournament where he was named player of the final for top scoring with 75 as Australia beat England. In all, Boon scored 7422 runs in 107 Tests with 21 centuries and 5964 runs in 181 ODIs with five centuries.
