Was Coventry’s Sacking Of Andy Thorn The Right Way To Go?

It’s been a busy week for Coventry City Football Club for all of the wrong reasons.

First we allow a two goal lead to slip at home to Bury and then the club choose to sack Andy Thorn four matches into the new season.

No managerial departure is ever surprising as it is part and parcel of the job but what is surprising is the timing of it. This seems to be a knee jerk reaction from the Coventry board and one that I am not particularly happy about.

Thorn’s record at the club hasn’t been great, far from it in fact but there are factors out of Thorn’s control which have had a major impact on this. First off we have to remember that Andy Thorn was very much thrown in at the deep end but he was able to give the club a new lease of life.

We as Coventry fans started to see the team trying to pass the ball and express themselves and we were all a lot happier. There were teething problems that everyone could see but this was always going to be the case when having a man in charge that had no management or coaching experience

By the end of the season we were getting somewhere and then the inevitable happened and the owners let us down by allowing the likes of Marlon King to leave. We then started the new season with a threadbare squad full of youngsters and we all knew we were in for another relegation battle.

January came and we were struggling but we were still very much in the fight. Then the inevitable happened again the club allowed their top goal scorer Lukas Jutkiewicz to leave and failed to replace him. We then really began to struggle and Thorn somehow pulled off the loan signings of Oliver Norwood and Alex Nimley. These two kept the fight alive but unfortunately the squad just ran out of steam after fighting for their lives all season.

Relegation was confirmed and I personally don’t think any blame can be attributed to Thorn. Under the circumstances I think even the best managers would have struggled to have kept us in the fight to the very end.

After relegation I think we were all wondering what was going to happen to our club and soon after relegation was confirmed the club issued a statement. This statement suggested the club would not only have a ‘bounce back’ budget with Thorn continuing as manager but also that there would be no knee jerk reaction with management and player changes and that stability was essential.

Well it didn’t take long for this statement to be forgotten about as the exodus of players began. Players continued to leave and players only began to arrive about three to four weeks before the new season started. These new arrivals were all free transfers up until the arrival of Barton who has been rumoured to have cost in the region of £50,000.

So an almost complete overhaul of the squad despite the club previously stating there would be no major changes and all done on what can only be described as a shoestring budget rather than a ‘bounce back’ budget. I have heard a few Coventry fans suggesting that because we have brought in nine new players we should have improved as a team and I’m sorry but what planet are these individuals on.

We have lost good players worth in the millions and yet we have only spent in the region of £50,000 to replace them, in what way is this going to improve us as a team. There still seems to be this unrealistic notion amongst certain Coventry fans that we are a big club and we should be winning every game we play in League One. A huge reality check is needed as we are a club who doesn’t own their ground and doesn’t even own their training ground. We are in serious financial difficulty and are being run by people who have no idea about football. To top it all off it looks as if we are going to average around the 10,000 mark for attendances this season and all this does not suggest a big club it suggests a club that is struggling to survive.

Four games in and Thorn has been sacked despite the team remaining unbeaten. Yes we have surrendered leads in these games but what is Thorn supposed to do about individual errors by the players and officials. McDonald missing an almost open net against Yeovil as well as the referee not giving a penalty after McDonald was brought down in the box. Then Malaga’s header which crossed the line and wasn’t given against Sheffield United and finally the numerous chances wasted in the first half against Bury. We could have so easily had five, seven or even nine points from these opening three games but it just wasn’t to be.

Sacking Thorn after just four games is just ridiculous. By no means is he a brilliant manager but this is a new team and it is finally his team even inspite of the budgetary restraints that have been put upon him. But he has been given no time at all to show what his team could do and you cannot judge a new squad of players four games into the season.

This for me is just another example of how much of a joke our board and owners are. We now have a situation where a manger has got to come in with a squad of players that are not his and has no chance to add to it himself, that is of course if we can actually afford another manager. It is more likely we will appoint Shaw or Carsley which isn’t going to change anything as again it will be someone who has no managerial experience.

Sacking Thorn in my opinion was wrong and is another disruption that we as a club could of really done without.

PUSB!!

Celtic fans want Brendan Rodgers to start Patrick Roberts against Rangers

Celtic know that they can win the Scottish Premiership title against their arch-rivals Rangers in the final Old Firm derby of the season at Parkhead on Sunday if they take all three points, and Bhoys fans want manager Brendan Rodgers to hand Patrick Roberts what would be a rare start this season.

The 21-year-old has missed a large chunk of the campaign through injury, but he has found first-team minutes hard to come by since making his return to action at the start of March.

While he made his first league start since October against Hamilton Academicals earlier this month, the Manchester City loanee once again found himself on the substitutes’ bench for the SFA semi-final tie against their Glasgow neighbours a fortnight ago, but the Celtic Park faithful want him in the XI following news that Andy Halliday is set to start as a makeshift left-back for Rangers.

Celtic supporters were quick to have their say on the winger via social media, and while one said “Roberts must start the game surely”, another said they were “desperate for Roberts to start”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Five fixtures that could define Spurs’ season

Although the top four once again evaded Spurs last term, there is a genuine feeling of positivity at ‘The Lane’ right now, with Harry Kane a 30+ goal-per-season striker and some late results in 2014/15 having brought a fifth-placed finish. There is every chance then that the Lilywhites could kick on in 2015/16.But to do so they’ll need to be on the ball from the off, with a tough trip to Manchester United awaiting on the opening day. Last time out Tottenham were roundly played off the park as the Red Devils came out 3-0 winners, so a slice of sweet revenge is likely to be on the agenda.

Although it doesn’t quite classify as one fixture, November will be a huge month for Spurs, with three London derbies on the cards. First up a trip to bitter rivals Arsenal, followed by home ties with Chelsea and West Ham. This trio of matches could have a huge impact on the season as a whole, with a good points return potentially enough to breed enough positivity to get the club firing through Christmas.

The return leg of the North London derby doesn’t roll around until March 5, but by that point there could be more than just local pride riding on the 90 minutes at White Hart Lane.

Liverpool away, after Aston Villa and Bournemouth meetings, also looks like it could be a key one in the top four crunch, with the Reds likely to be major rivals in the battle for that last top-level European spot.

And although the penultimate game is some way off and it’s difficult to make a prediction at this point, the home match with Southampton may be one that has a big say on the top four battle, too.

Could any of the young cubs step up to the mark next season?

As Wolves slide ominously towards life in League One, who could step up to the mark next season? Guest blogger & Wolves academy specialist ‘Compton Stars’ tells us who…

Are the next generation of Wolves academy prospects ready to step up to the first team? Well, Its clearly down to each person’s personal opinion, but looking at facts, the best way to assess this is to look at the next stage down from the first team, the U21s.

Wolves U21s qualified for the Premier League Elite stage, a newly established national academy league, which in principle means we have one of the best eight U21 teams in the country. Even if in my opinion we over achieved getting to this stage, finishing above Manchester City & Chelsea. We started off slowly in the elite stage but have really grown into the Elite league, including the last few games after good results against Spurs U21s and Manchester United U21s.

Whatever happens in the remaining games, it’s a fantastic achievement which will be beneficial in the future and all Wolves fans should be proud.

Which players from this U21 squad could step up to the first team? I don’t think any of the players in the U18s/U21s are ready to step up currently, not to say they couldn’t in the future. The three that were always ahead in ability and experience were Danny Batth, Matt Doherty, and Jake Cassidy.

With the realistic possibility of League One football coming our way, I have picked a team that could play in League One if all our established first team players were sold. This may be unrealistic but it will give supporters a chance to see who is next in line:

GK- Aaron Mccarey

RB- Matt Doherty/Kristan Kostma

CB- Danny Batth

CB- Jamie Tank/Michael Ihekwe

LB- Jay Cranston

RM- Zele Ismail

CM- Jack Price

CM- Lee Evans

LM- Anthony Forde

Which division Wolves are in will have a big impact on how many of the academy players I have highlighted will be given a chance in the future. The majority of managers don’t like throwing youngsters in when times are tough and the first team is struggling as some still don’t have the mental capability to cope with playing in front of 20,000 fans who aren’t very happy.

Realistically the only way to find out if the next generation of Wolves academy prospects are ready to step up to the first team is if they are given a chance. Then the whole of Molineux faithful can make that judgement and form an opinion and not before then.

Hamburg still keen on Spurs attacker

Hamburg are still eager to sign Tottenham attacker Rafael van der Vaart, The Sun claim.

The Netherlands international has played for the Bundesliga team before, and with his wife working in Germany a move to his former club or Schalke has been touted all-summer long.

Andre Villas-Boas is eager to revamp his squad before the end of the transfer window, with Van der Vaart one of the players in risk of being shown the door at White Hart Lane.

The German club have confessed an interest in re-signing the forward, but admit that a move depends on Spurs.

“There is not a lot of time — it is up to Tottenham. If we have a chance to sign him we will do everything to make it happen,” chairman Carl-Edgar Jarchow said.

With Spurs interested in the likes of Willian, Van der Vaart’s role in the side is yet to be determined.

Klopp reveals plans for when he leaves Liverpool, fans react

The majority of Liverpool fans have been completely captured by Jurgen Klopp’s charismatic nature and attack-minded tactics on the pitch.

So, when the German coach recently discussed his plans for when he departs Anfield for good, supporters were left sweating.

In an interview with Sky Germany, the 50-year-old revealed that he will take a year-long break when his time with the Reds is over, and that he may retire from management earlier than people would expect.

“It’s possible that I will end my career a lot earlier than coaches usually do. It’s very intense. I don’t want to die on the coaching bench. After Liverpool I will for sure do a one-year break. That’s a clear agreement with my family.”

Klopp joined Liverpool in October 2015 on a three-year deal, replacing Brendan Rodgers, and in the following year he penned a six-year contract that will expire in 2022.

The former Borussia Dortmund boss is yet to win silverware with the Merseyside outfit, but he has an opportunity to change that as the club are potentially three games away from winning the Champions League.

Next Tuesday, the team, who ousted Manchester City in the final eight, will take on Roma in the first leg of the semi-finals at Anfield before heading to the Stadio Olimpico for the decider the following week.

Liverpool fans have been impressed by recent performances, so the idea of Klopp no longer being at the helm is an unfathomable thought for the majority of them.

Why Everton can’t blame their poor season on the Europa League

Everton’s poor season is coming to an end, and they’re really in the best form of the year just now. It’s a case of too little, too late, but at least they’re showing signs of finding the light at the end of the tunnel.

It could be that their Europa League foray was their downfall. They had more games than they did last season, and these extra games have been against tougher teams. Everton found themselves in a tough group, alongside Lille, who came down from the Champions League qualifiers and Wolfsburg, who are one of the most dangerous teams in Germany. It certainly wasn’t easy for them, and maybe these games are to blame.

Everton won just two of their Premier League games on the weekends after the group games in the Europa League and both these wins came against sides who are currently in the bottom three, Queens Park Rangers and Burnley.

It might also be a case of Europa League syndrome – teams who didn’t play in Europe the previous season who now find themselves with more games and long flights often do poorly. The Thursday-Sunday turnover seems to do strange things to teams, and perhaps this is what happened to the Toffees.

But I’m not sure that this explains just how badly they’ve been performing this season. Their defeats in the league haven’t come only after European games. They didn’t win in six games in and around the Christmas period, from late December to early January, including four Premier League defeats in a row. And not a Europa League game in sight. So the Europa League might be one reason, but surely their problem has deeper roots than that.

[ffc-gal cat=”arsenal” no=”5″]

If you look for other themes in Everton’s season, you’ll probably find that mistakes have been a common one. Especially poor defending, and it’s led quite simply to poor results. Why this has happened this season and didn’t happen last season is a tough one to answer, and the Europa League may partly be to blame, but something else must explain the rest.

One thing could be injuries. Roberto Martinez has had some trouble fielding a first choice back four for a lot of the campaign. John Stones is probably the first choice to start alongside Phil Jagielka and although Jagielka has made the most starts for Everton this season, Stones has only made half his appearances. The other half he’s been paired with Alcaraz or Distin.

Sylvain Distin, at 37, is now too old to be a first choice central defender in the Premier League and seems to be fading enough to make Martinez question whether or not Distin should even be cover. Antolin Alcaraz, for his part, has simply looked out of his depth at the back for Everton. The away leg of the Europa League tie against Kiev illustrates that, where he looked like making a mistake every time he touched the ball, even looking wobbly every time a Kiev player even got to within a few feet from him.

Admittedly injuries are hard to cope with, but Martinez needs backup in these key areas. Injuries and suspensions are part and parcel of modern football – the game is so fast and they play so many matches. And if Everton want to be a top club playing European football year in year out, then they need to be able to deal with that. Not just fade away for a season while they struggle to cope with the demands of fixture juggling.

And top Premier League clubs have enough resources to have strength in depth. That’s no excuse – they spent £28m on Romelu Lukaku, so they certainly have the resources to do better with their squad depth.

To be fair, though, with Stones, Jagielka, Baines and Coleman fit and playing in front of a fit Tim Howard, Everton have started to play well and go on a little bit of a run. They’re only six points behind Swansea, who are in the sort of ‘best of the rest’ position behind the European chasing teams above. If Everton can track them down and finish eighth it would start to look a little more respectable.

It’s too late to threaten the European positions, and also too late to turn a bad season into a good one, or even an okay one. It’s still a bad season. But good form and a higher league position to finish the season could be a catalyst for a good start to next season. If they can manage that, plus add some more depth to the squad, especially at the back, then Everton might be able to come good again next time around.

It shouldn’t be all doom and gloom. It hasn’t been a great season, but it’s about building for next season now. A good finish is the first step to that, and they’re heading in the right direction now.

Manchester United put German top of their wanted list

Manchester United have put Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp top of their list to replace Sir Alex Ferguson when the long serving boss calls it a day, according to the Daily Mirror.

Ferguson will be at Old Trafford for at least another 12 months as he goes on the search for another host of trophies to enable him to go out on a high.

It was rumoured the long serving Scot would retire this summer but after a poor showing in the domestic trophies and the Champions League, Ferguson wants at least one more crack at the treble.

Klopp has taken Dortmund from a mid-table German side to the Bundesliga winners and Champions League finalists in the space of three years.

The attractive style of play, shrewdness in the transfer market and breeding of youth players has particularly impressed United as their former first choice Jose Mourinho appears to be on his way back to Chelsea.

Thierry Henry set for third Arsenal debut

Thierry Henry could make his third Arsenal debut in their FA cup clash against Swansea next month if he completes his loan move from New York Red Bulls, the Daily Mail reports.

The Gunners are in advanced talks with the MLS club and are expected to complete a deal that will see the Arsenal legend arrive for his third spell with them from the start of January.

A deal has been agreed in principle but the one issue which hasn’t is the length of Henry’s stay, with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger wanting to keep him till the end of the season while the New York Red Bulls want him available for the start of their season in March.

Henry is set to be the first arrival at the Emirates in January but Wenger hopes more will follow. Holland striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Crystal Palace starlet Wilfred Zaha have both been set as prime targets, with the latter seeming more likely to happen in the summer rather than in the upcoming window.

Another boost for the Gunners is that England international midfielder Jack Wilshere believes he is nearing full fitness again after making his return from a long term injury.

“I have got better every game. I’m maybe 90%,” Wilshere said.

“I’m not sure. Every game that goes by I feel better and better fitness-wise.”

Arsenal despite being inconsistent, are still currently in all competitions and got back to winning ways in the Premier League with a 2-0 victory over West Brom on Saturday.

Chelsea fans heap praise on Kante for his humility

For the second season in three, numerous Chelsea players have dropped their level of performance substantially which has resulted in a putrid defence of the Premier League title.

That alarming slump will surely see Antonio Conte pay with his job in the summer – if not before – but there are clearly issues with the club as a whole for this to happen twice in such a short space of time.

One man who hasn’t let his standards slip is N’Golo Kante, who could arguably be deemed Chelsea’s only world-class player.

The dressing rooms both now and in the 2015/16 aberration under Jose Mourinho were full of big egos but the French holding midfielder is as humble as they come.

A photo has emerged of the former Leicester City man, who has 22 caps for France, shopping in Sainsbury’s, further underlining his humility and endearing himself to the Blues fans.

We’ve taken a look at the best of the reaction…
