Why Everton can’t blame their poor season on the Europa League

Everton’s poor season is coming to an end, and they’re really in the best form of the year just now. It’s a case of too little, too late, but at least they’re showing signs of finding the light at the end of the tunnel.

It could be that their Europa League foray was their downfall. They had more games than they did last season, and these extra games have been against tougher teams. Everton found themselves in a tough group, alongside Lille, who came down from the Champions League qualifiers and Wolfsburg, who are one of the most dangerous teams in Germany. It certainly wasn’t easy for them, and maybe these games are to blame.

Everton won just two of their Premier League games on the weekends after the group games in the Europa League and both these wins came against sides who are currently in the bottom three, Queens Park Rangers and Burnley.

It might also be a case of Europa League syndrome – teams who didn’t play in Europe the previous season who now find themselves with more games and long flights often do poorly. The Thursday-Sunday turnover seems to do strange things to teams, and perhaps this is what happened to the Toffees.

But I’m not sure that this explains just how badly they’ve been performing this season. Their defeats in the league haven’t come only after European games. They didn’t win in six games in and around the Christmas period, from late December to early January, including four Premier League defeats in a row. And not a Europa League game in sight. So the Europa League might be one reason, but surely their problem has deeper roots than that.

If you look for other themes in Everton’s season, you’ll probably find that mistakes have been a common one. Especially poor defending, and it’s led quite simply to poor results. Why this has happened this season and didn’t happen last season is a tough one to answer, and the Europa League may partly be to blame, but something else must explain the rest.

One thing could be injuries. Roberto Martinez has had some trouble fielding a first choice back four for a lot of the campaign. John Stones is probably the first choice to start alongside Phil Jagielka and although Jagielka has made the most starts for Everton this season, Stones has only made half his appearances. The other half he’s been paired with Alcaraz or Distin.

Sylvain Distin, at 37, is now too old to be a first choice central defender in the Premier League and seems to be fading enough to make Martinez question whether or not Distin should even be cover. Antolin Alcaraz, for his part, has simply looked out of his depth at the back for Everton. The away leg of the Europa League tie against Kiev illustrates that, where he looked like making a mistake every time he touched the ball, even looking wobbly every time a Kiev player even got to within a few feet from him.

Admittedly injuries are hard to cope with, but Martinez needs backup in these key areas. Injuries and suspensions are part and parcel of modern football – the game is so fast and they play so many matches. And if Everton want to be a top club playing European football year in year out, then they need to be able to deal with that. Not just fade away for a season while they struggle to cope with the demands of fixture juggling.

And top Premier League clubs have enough resources to have strength in depth. That’s no excuse – they spent £28m on Romelu Lukaku, so they certainly have the resources to do better with their squad depth.

To be fair, though, with Stones, Jagielka, Baines and Coleman fit and playing in front of a fit Tim Howard, Everton have started to play well and go on a little bit of a run. They’re only six points behind Swansea, who are in the sort of ‘best of the rest’ position behind the European chasing teams above. If Everton can track them down and finish eighth it would start to look a little more respectable.

It’s too late to threaten the European positions, and also too late to turn a bad season into a good one, or even an okay one. It’s still a bad season. But good form and a higher league position to finish the season could be a catalyst for a good start to next season. If they can manage that, plus add some more depth to the squad, especially at the back, then Everton might be able to come good again next time around.

It shouldn’t be all doom and gloom. It hasn’t been a great season, but it’s about building for next season now. A good finish is the first step to that, and they’re heading in the right direction now.

Manchester United put German top of their wanted list

Manchester United have put Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp top of their list to replace Sir Alex Ferguson when the long serving boss calls it a day, according to the Daily Mirror.

Ferguson will be at Old Trafford for at least another 12 months as he goes on the search for another host of trophies to enable him to go out on a high.

It was rumoured the long serving Scot would retire this summer but after a poor showing in the domestic trophies and the Champions League, Ferguson wants at least one more crack at the treble.

Klopp has taken Dortmund from a mid-table German side to the Bundesliga winners and Champions League finalists in the space of three years.

The attractive style of play, shrewdness in the transfer market and breeding of youth players has particularly impressed United as their former first choice Jose Mourinho appears to be on his way back to Chelsea.

Thierry Henry set for third Arsenal debut

Thierry Henry could make his third Arsenal debut in their FA cup clash against Swansea next month if he completes his loan move from New York Red Bulls, the Daily Mail reports.

The Gunners are in advanced talks with the MLS club and are expected to complete a deal that will see the Arsenal legend arrive for his third spell with them from the start of January.

A deal has been agreed in principle but the one issue which hasn’t is the length of Henry’s stay, with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger wanting to keep him till the end of the season while the New York Red Bulls want him available for the start of their season in March.

Henry is set to be the first arrival at the Emirates in January but Wenger hopes more will follow. Holland striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Crystal Palace starlet Wilfred Zaha have both been set as prime targets, with the latter seeming more likely to happen in the summer rather than in the upcoming window.

Another boost for the Gunners is that England international midfielder Jack Wilshere believes he is nearing full fitness again after making his return from a long term injury.

“I have got better every game. I’m maybe 90%,” Wilshere said.

“I’m not sure. Every game that goes by I feel better and better fitness-wise.”

Arsenal despite being inconsistent, are still currently in all competitions and got back to winning ways in the Premier League with a 2-0 victory over West Brom on Saturday.

Chelsea fans heap praise on Kante for his humility

For the second season in three, numerous Chelsea players have dropped their level of performance substantially which has resulted in a putrid defence of the Premier League title.

That alarming slump will surely see Antonio Conte pay with his job in the summer – if not before – but there are clearly issues with the club as a whole for this to happen twice in such a short space of time.

One man who hasn’t let his standards slip is N’Golo Kante, who could arguably be deemed Chelsea’s only world-class player.

The dressing rooms both now and in the 2015/16 aberration under Jose Mourinho were full of big egos but the French holding midfielder is as humble as they come.

A photo has emerged of the former Leicester City man, who has 22 caps for France, shopping in Sainsbury’s, further underlining his humility and endearing himself to the Blues fans.

Hull 0-3 Arsenal: Twitter reacts to Gunners masterclass

Tonight’s Bank Holiday action in the Premier League sees Arsenal take on Hull City at the KC Stadium.

And it’s been a fantastic watch so far – unless you’re a Hull City fan. The Gunners are 3-0 up and have produced an absolute attacking masterclass, with two goals from Alexis Sanchez and another from Aaron Ramsey.

Admittedly, fortune has favoured the visitors in front of goal. Sanchez’ first strike – a curling free kick – took a telling knick off the Tigers’ wall to spin past a helpless Steve Harper.

Likewise, Arsenal’s second saw Aaron Ramsey latch onto an incredible Santi Cazorla pass inside the box, launched from inside the Gunners own half, only for the Welshman’s effort to deflect off the feet of a blocking James Chester and arrow into the top corner of the net.

Arsenal’s third, however, another Sanchez effort, was an absolute peach. Ramsey cut open the Hull defence with a weighted pass, allowing the Chile international to take one touch around Harper and pass the ball into an open goal.

Needless to say, Arsenal fans on Twitter are absolutely delighted:

Chelsea fans, on the other hand, were a little more cynical:

Everton ace Set For Summer Move

Everton goalkeeper Jan Mucha is set to leave Goodison Park in the summer when his contract expires, according to Sky Sports.

The Slovakian is currently able to talk to foreign clubs over an off season move but the Toffees could still make the ‘keeper an offer.

Mucha had to wait until three weeks ago to make his Premier League debut for the Merseyside club two and half years after joining.

American Tim Howard has been the long-time number one in David Moyes’ side but recent injuries have allowed Mucha to grab his chance.

A superb individual display helped Everton to a crucial home victory over the Premier League champions Manchester City last weekend but mistakes against Wigan in the FA Cup quarter final will have affected the 30-year-olds confidence.

While Mucha is not happy about playing second fiddle at Goodison Park, his representatives have not given up hope of a new deal being signed at Everton after the season has finished.

“There are a number of options at the moment,” Mucha’s agent told sport.aktuality.sk.

“He may reach an agreement with a new club during the season, which is legitimate according to FIFA.

“As for Everton, there is no chance an agreement will be made during the season.

Christian Eriksen the difference for Spurs once again in 2-1 win over Stoke City

If there was one criticism from Christian Eriksen’s previous seasons at Tottenham Hotspur, it was how temperamental the Danish international could be for a player of his obvious quality.

That’s not to say the playmaker didn’t bring creative threat to most of his performances; rather, that his capacity as a match-winner tended to vary. In some games, he’d be the difference for Tottenham. In others, he’d just about surpass a supporting role, often when the Lilywhites needed him most.

But this season has been one of increasing maturity for arguably Spurs’ most talented midfielder. More and more, Eriksen – who Transfermarkt value at £63million – has appeared to embrace his responsibility in the team this season, particularly since the start of December which has seen him enjoy a run of ten goals and six assists in 21 appearances.

A fortnight ago, Eriksen’s wonderstrike at Stamford Bridge was vital in getting Tottenham back into a game that essentially secured them Champions League football for 2018/19, and against Stoke on Saturday the 26-year-old was the difference once again – officially scoring twice even if Harry Kane did his best to claim the second goal as his own, Eriksen’s free kick seemingly glancing off the England international’s shoulder.

And thus, we are left facing an interesting question; who is Tottenham’s best match-winner? That is to say, the player with the greatest ability to turn a game on it’s head with a moment of brilliance. Let us know by voting below…

Liverpool and Arsenal dealt major summer transfer blow

Liverpool and Arsenal’s pursuit of Villarreal striker Luciano Vietto has been dealt a major blow ahead of potential moves for him this summer, according to Mirror Football.

The 21-year-old has been a target for the Premier League duo in recent weeks, after netting 18 goals in his first 36 outings for the La Liga outfit this season.

But, amidst reported interest from both Real Madrid and Barcelona, Vietto has admitted it would be a dream come true to play alongside Barca legend Lionel Messi.

He said: “Everyone dreams of playing alongside Messi.

“Of course it would be a dream come true. I had the chance to meet him and also to get to know him off the pitch.

“He is a great person and made the great gesture of presenting me with his jersey. It is a memory I will retain for the rest of my life.”

But Vietto remains tight-lipped on any speculation linking him with a move away from Villarreal this summer and insists all his attention remains solely with the Estadio El Madrigal outfit.

“Being honest, I am very relaxed about this,” he added.

“I just try and think solely of Villarreal, in the week’s training and performing game to game.

“I use all these rumours as motivation, to keep strengthening myself and improving. I have no doubts that if I keep doing well, all will arrive in its own time.”

Such an admission might prove to be a stumbling block for Brendan Rodgers and Arsene Wenger, who are both believed to be in the market for a striker ahead of next season.

But Mirror Football appear to believe Liverpool remain one of the front runners to secure his signature.

Title race not over insists Roberto Mancini

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has refused to rule his side out of the race for the Premier League title, following their 1-0 win over Aston Villa.

The Sky Blues are now 12 points adrift of leaders, and local rivals, Manchester United, with ten games left to play.

Although the Red Devils are firm favourites to take the trophy from the Etihad Stadium, Mancini says it is too early to rule his side out of the race:

“For us it was important to stay 12 behind United, with 10 games left you never say never. Keep on winning and you never know, this is football.” He told Sky Sports.

“Last year nobody thought it was possible but 12 points in 10 games. If they lose four…”

Midfielder Yaya Toure echoed his manager’s sentiments, whilst also sending his best wishes to Jack Rodwell, who limped off of the pitch during the first-half with a suspected hamstring injury:

“Today we showed we have a fantastic squad, we are sad with Jack but this is an important day for us,

“Twelve points is a lot but it’s not finished.”

Carlos Tevez netted the only goal of the game on the stroke of half time.

Villa captain Ciaran Clark slipped, allowing Edin Dzeko, who replaced the injured Rodwell, to square for his Argentine strike partner.

Tevez then coolly rounded Brad Guzan before slipping the ball into the back of the net.

Former Man United manager Tommy Docherty lays into Mourinho

Jose Mourinho has split opinion for years and years now but he has largely had the support of a Manchester United fanbase desperate to return to the top of English football throughout his time at Old Trafford.

However, the tumultuous week in March that saw the Red Devils crash out of the Champions League at the hands of Sevilla appeared to be something of a turning point for the former Real Madrid manager.

The disappointing defeat to the Spanish side and its insipid nature seemingly emboldened Mourinho’s critics – both fans of the club and those looking in from outside – and increased the scrutiny on him.

As the Portuguese manager gears up to try and prevent United’s bitter rivals Manchester City winning the league against them, he has also been criticised by a club legend.

Former boss Tommy Docherty has had his say about a man who has taken to managing at Old Trafford in a very different manor to how he did.

He was quoted by the Sun as saying:

“If he was made of chocolate he would eat himself. You can’t argue with his record but I think he goes over the score with the criticism of players.

“He has bought those players and then he is criticising them afterwards. I would be amazed if he lasts any length of time at United.

“I don’t think the board will put up with his antics. I don’t watch them a lot because I watch City – they are great to watch. They play football the way I like to play it.”
