£65m forward Atletico Madrid are pushing for wants to join Chelsea

Chelsea chiefs are informed that a Premier League forward who Atlético Madrid are pushing to sign wants to join Enzo Maresca’s side – with a transfer battle potentially brewing against the La Liga side.

Chelsea preparing for another very active summer window

With Chelsea participating in the Club World Cup, BlueCo are expected to be busy right from the off this summer, and could take full advantage of the early window, which opens from June 1 to June 10.

The Stamford Bridge recruiter is very keen.

A host of players face uncertain futures at Chelsea – including Kepa Arrizabalaga, Alfie Gilchrist, Renato Veiga, Armando Broja, Raheem Sterling, João Félix, David Datro Fofana, Carney Chukwuemeka, Ben Chilwell and Axel Disasi – who are all away on loan spells right now and seemingly out of Maresca’s plans.

Chelsea will likely attempt to find buyers for all the aforementioned crop, all while the west Londoners reportedly target a new centre-back, winger and striker as the priority signings on their agenda (Simon Phillips).

Depending on their qualification for the Champions League next season and how many unwanted players they can ship out the door, it is also believed that Chelsea could go for a second centre-back (who can play at left-back when required), an attacking midfielder and a goalkeeper (Simon Phillips).

All signs point towards a very busy off-season for the Chelsea recruitment team, and new forwards appear to be high on their to-do list.

Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Bynoe-Gittensin action with Club Brugge's Ferran Jutgla

Chelsea have held talks over Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens already, while reports in Italy claim Milan star Rafael Leao is also a target for the west Londoners.

However, another player who remains in their thinking is Man United’s Alejandro Garnacho.

Alejandro Garnacho wants to join Chelsea this summer

The Argentinian has scored 11 goals and assisted 10 others in all competitions so far, featuring regularly under new manager Ruben Amorim, but he could still make the move away from Old Trafford.

Chelsea did work on signing Garnacho in January, but a move for him ultimately couldn’t come to fruition. Now, journalist Graeme Bailey has told the Chelsea Chronicle that he could join Maresca this summer instead.

Indeed, it is believed Garnacho is also keen on a move to Chelsea, and the Blues are serious fans of the “huge talent”.

“Garnacho is very much still on Chelsea’s radar – they are looking for someone to operate from that left side, and they have done work on a lot of names,” said Bailey.

“I am told that the three at the top of their list are currently Jamie Gittens, Nico Williams and Garnacho.

“Chelsea are not set on one target and Garnacho is someone they like a lot, they tried to sign him in January. They know the player is keen on the move. And he is a huge talent, they think he would be a good fit. He seems to have been around forever, but he is still just 20.”

The South American would reportedly cost around £65 million, and Bailey has also written that Atlético are “pushing hard” to sign Garnacho as well, so he won’t be an easy capture by any means.

Huge Richarlison upgrade: Spurs prepare offer to sign £30m "wrecking ball"

Regardless of what happens in the Europa League and with Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham Hotspur need a massive summer in the transfer market.

From defence to attack, the North Londoners need to dramatically improve their squad to avoid having another domestic season as bad as this one next year.

Fortunately, Daniel Levy and Co seem to agree with this sentiment, as, on top of the near-constant rumours around the manager’s position, we are starting to see stories linking the club to some brilliant players.

In fact, if recent reports are to be believed, the Lilywhites have now set their sights on one of the most exciting strikers in the Premier League, someone who’d be an enormous upgrade on Richarlison, who looks like he could be on the way out as well.

Spurs' striker search

So, before we get to the forward in question, it’s worth looking at some of the other strikers Spurs are supposedly interested in from outside the Premier League, like Jonathan David and Tim Kleindienst.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The former is set to be available for free this summer, and with a sensational tally of 25 goals and 12 assists in 47 games this season, the Canadian international would be an incredible addition to the North Londoners squad.

Kleindienst, on the other hand, could cost around £30m this summer, and while that isn’t chump change, it would still represent fair value, as the German international has scored 16 goals and provided ten assists in 32 games this year.

Yet, Levy and Co might prefer to shop closer to home and sign a more Premier League-proven marksman like Liam Delap.

Yes, according to a recent report from GIVEMESPORT, Spurs are one of several teams incredibly interested in the Ipswich Town goalscorer.

In fact, while the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Everton and West Ham United are all also keen, the report has revealed that the Lilywhites are now ‘planning to make an offer’ for the Englishman, who now has a £30m release clause in his contract.

It might be a complicated transfer to get done with how many interested parties there are, but it’s one worth fighting for, especially as he’d be an incredible Richarlison upgrade.

How Delap compares to Richarlison

So, if Spurs are able to get ahead of the chasing pack and bring Delap to N17 in the summer, it’s almost certain that, to begin with at least, he’d play second-fiddle to club-record signing Dominic Solanke.

Therefore, he’d either be in direct competition with Richarlison or be his replacement should he be moved on, so how does he stack up to the Brazilian?

Well, the most important metric for a centre-forward is their raw output; in this case, the Englishman comes out comfortably on top.

For example, despite playing for a relegated side, the 22-year-old “wrecking-ball,” as dubbed by Sky Sports’ Lewis Jones, has managed to score 12 goals and provide two assists in 37 appearances, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 2.64 games.

In contrast, the former Everton star has scored five goals and provided two assists in 20 appearances this season, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 2.85 games.

Moreover, besides being the more dangerous forward and five years younger, the former Manchester City gem has one other massive advantage over the Nova Venécia-born ace: his fitness.

For example, across his career, the Winchester-born monster has missed just 16 games, and that was down to a single knee injury he suffered last season, which has since not resurfaced.

In stark contrast, the 48-capped Brazilian has missed a whopping 78 games for club and country across his career and suffered from 20 injuries.

Ultimately, while he’s still somewhat raw, it’s abundantly clear that Delap would be a massive upgrade on Richarlison in almost every way, so Spurs should do what they can to sign him this summer.

West Brom star is hoping Leeds try to sign him, but he'd also join Wolves

Leeds United and the 49ers now want to sign a “technical” attacking player who will cost them nothing this summer, and he’s apparently open to joining both Leeds and rival suitors Wolves.

Leeds putting plans in place for busy summer

The Whites’ automatic promotion hopes suffered another blow over the weekend as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Luton Town. Leeds now have six games to go to secure a top-two finish ahead of Burnley or Sheffield United. But despite the uncertainty, Leeds are still putting plans in place for the summer, with the hope being they are a Premier League team.

At the end of last week, it was reported that the Whites have made an approach over a deal to sign Tomas Soucek from West Ham. The Czech Republic international has been identified as a target by Daniel Farke, who sees the midfielder as someone who can offer goals and experience to his team. But obviously this deal can only go through if Leeds are back in the top flight.

Signing a new goalkeeper has also become a priority for the club, and according to The Sun, Leeds are lining up a move to sign Nick Pope as Illan Meslier’s replacement.

Nick Pope

Newcastle are chasing a deal for James Trafford, and this could mean Pope is allowed to leave St James’ Park this summer, despite his wealth of Premier League experience.

Leeds want to beat Wolves to the signing of "technical" star

It is not just a new goalkeeper on the Whites’ transfer list, as according to Alan Nixon, relayed by Football League World, Leeds are now interested in signing Grady Diangana from West Brom, with the attacker ‘hoping’ the Whites sign him, while he would also welcome interest from rival suitors Wolves.

It is reported that Diangana, who joined the Baggies on a permanent basis in 2020, would like to make a move to the top flight come the end of the campaign. Both teams have shown a concrete interest in the player, while teams from the MLS are also interested in a possible deal.

However, Diangana, who is out of contract at the end of the season, is holding off interest from teams abroad, as he wants to concentrate on the remainder of the campaign with West Brom, as they can still finish in the top six. It is claimed that there are no signs of a deal being agreed between the player and the Baggies, meaning he will cost Leeds nothing this summer should they look to sign him.

Young ones to watch: Kranti Goud, Georgia Voll and Lauren Bell prepare to light up World Cup

A look at the players who made their ODI debuts during the 2022-25 cycle and who could shape their teams’ campaigns

Srinidhi Ramanujam26-Sep-2025Georgia Voll (Australia)Georgia Voll’s last 12 months have marked a breakout phase in her career. She debuted across all three formats, stepped in for the injured Alyssa Healy, and scored a commanding 101 in just her second ODI. She followed that with an unbeaten 99 for UP Warriorz in her maiden WPL stint, showing her comfort in subcontinental conditions. At 22, she’s earned a Cricket Australia central contract and heads into the World Cup as one of the team’s most promising young players. Though she may not be part of Australia’s first-choice top order, her ability to slot in seamlessly and perform under pressure makes her a valuable option.”It’s something I probably never imagined to happen so quickly,” Voll said of her rapid rise and she credits Australia’s strong domestic setup for her readiness. “You just prepare the same way as if you’re playing. You can’t get too wrapped up in the what-ifs and just making sure you’re best prepared if you’re called on or if you’re playing, like any other day.Georgia Voll has settled into a strong Australia squad•Getty Images”If you let the other things overtake you, it can probably not set you up as well. That’s probably what I’ll be looking to do is just prepare as if I’m ready to go if I’m playing or not playing… if you’re training the exact same way every time, you’re set up for success, if that is on the field or helping the team out running drinks or whatever.”Georgia Plimmer (New Zealand)Touted as one of New Zealand’s brightest talents, Georgia Plimmer played her first 13 ODIs in the middle order since debuting in 2022, before being promoted to open in April 2024. While her early ODI numbers don’t fully reflect her potential, the right-handed batter has demonstrated the ability to score big. After nine innings at the top, Plimmer converted her opportunity into a maiden ODI century against Sri Lanka in Nelson in March. In the recent A series in Derby, Plimmer also scored a century against England A in June. At just 21, she is already a World Cup winner, having been part of New Zealand’s T20I squad that claimed the title last year. As recently as April 2025, the 21-year-old seamer from Madhya Pradesh wasn’t in India’s ODI plans, only getting her debut due to an injury replacement. Left out of the initial England tour longlist in July, she forced her way in after impressing at a skills camp and then made history. At Chester-le-Street, she became the youngest Indian woman to take a five-for in ODIs, with a sensational 6 for 52 against England, drawing praise from captain Harmanpreet Kaur: “We’ve been dying for a fast bowler like you.”Kranti Goud dismisses Alyssa Healy•Getty ImagesKnown for her nip-backers, yorkers, and ability to hustle batters, Goud had already turned heads earlier by dismissing Meg Lanning in the WPL, and also the likes of Nat Sciver-Brunt and Alyssa Healy in bilateral series.Marufa Akter (Bangladesh)Marufa Akter has quickly become Bangladesh’s pace spearhead in a bowling attack traditionally dominated by spin. Just 20 years old, she already has 20 wickets from 26 ODIs at an average of 31.90 and brings a valuable point of difference with her ability to swing the ball both ways and strike early with the new ball. With a smooth, repeatable action and a bustling run-up, she brings energy and discipline, often sticking to stump-to-stump lines. Marufa was Bangladesh’s leading wicket-taker at the 2023 Under-19 T20 World Cup, where she first caught wider attention. She has gone wicketless in just three of her 28 ODI appearances, underlining her reliability with the ball.Lauren Bell spearheads England’s seam attack•Getty ImagesWith senior seamer Kate Cross not in the World Cup squad, Bell will be expected to lead the pace attack. That responsibility is well-earned: in 2023, she remodelled her action to bowl more upright, unlocking the ability to swing the ball both ways. While subcontinental pitches may not offer much assistance, Bell’s height, accuracy, and ability to move the ball through the air make her a genuine threat with the new ball.Annerie Dercksen (South Africa)Annerie Dercksen has quickly established herself as a key allrounder across all formats for South Africa since her ODI debut in 2024. Her breakthrough year earned her a first national contract and the Women’s ODI Player of the Year award at the 2024-25 CSA awards.Sadaf Shamas (Pakistan)A composed top-order batter, Sadaf Shamas made her ODI debut in November 2022 but is still finding her feet at international level. Recently, she suffered a left quadriceps tear during a practice session in Karachi in August but recovered in time to make the squad. With Pakistan looking to build a more reliable batting core, Shamas could have a key role to play if she finds form early in the tournament.Dewmi Vihanga (Sri Lanka)A tall offspinner with impressive control and variation, Dewmi Vihanga made her senior debut during the tri-series with India and South Africa in Colombo earlier this year and made an immediate impression. She picked up 11 wickets in her first four ODIs, including a five-wicket haul against South Africa where she dismantled the top and middle order in just her third international appearance.Dewmi Vihanga picked up a five-for•SLCThough the least experienced among Sri Lanka’s spin options – which include Inoka Ranaweera, Sugandika Kumari, Chamari Athapaththu, and Kavisha Dilhari – her accuracy and deceptive flight make her a genuine threat. Vihanga was also Sri Lanka’s highest wicket-taker and second-highest run-scorer at the 2023 Under-19 World Cup, signalling her all-round potential early on.

Every second counts – early takeaways from the Hundred bash

Bowlers have it better, timekeeping is key, women have equal billing as men… there’s a lot to get behind

Alan Gardner30-Jul-2021Bowlers catch a break
Reducing the number of deliveries a team needs to bat, without cutting the resources (i.e. wickets) at their disposal, usually sees the rate of scoring go up – just think T10, or any rain-affected five-over thrash you have been to. But that doesn’t seem to have been the case in the early stages of the Hundred, admittedly when players are still working out how best to approach the format. In the men’s competition, there have only been three totals above 150 (which is roughly the equivalent of 180 in a T20), and only two above 140 in the women’s. Overall, there have been 14 half-centuries from 17 completed matches, and the only player to have got close to scoring a century is Jemimah Rodrigues. As has been pointed out, several of the changes seem to have made the Hundred more bowler-friendly – from the shorter powerplay, the ability to bowl ten balls if things are going well or bail out after five if not, and the fact new batters almost always take the strike. That last feature seems increasingly significant and is something for teams to start factoring in. In Trent Rockets’ dramatic Alex Hales-led resurrection against Northern Supercharger, Hales faced 19 balls in the first half of the chase, and then 15 in the second as wickets fell around him, limiting the damage he may otherwise have been able to inflict in a small chase.Watching the opening stages, it has often felt as if timekeeping is meant to be one of the foremost skills on show•Getty ImagesA matter of timing
“Every ball counts” is the tagline of the Hundred, but perhaps “every second counts” would have been more apt. Watching the opening stages, it has often felt as if timekeeping is meant to be one of the foremost skills on show; that the major reason T20 hasn’t brought floods of new fans to the game in this country is not down to the arcane workings of the county system, or a (relative) lack or star signings, or the absence from free-to-air television, but rather a somewhat tardy over rate. Then again, the ability to complete 100-ball games inside two-and-a-half hours was supposedly an appealing factor to broadcasters – in particular the BBC, which isn’t keen on prime time cricket running over and disrupting the schedules. Although a requirement for there to be 50 seconds between each change of ends, presumably for advertising purpose, sits at odds with the need for speed.Related

Whatever the truth, discussions of the cut-off time – after which teams lose fielders outside the ring if they have not started to bowl the final set of five – have been a near ubiquitous feature of the closing stages of innings, only missing the theme being played over the top.Women on the rise
The ECB’s scrapping of the successful Kia Super League was one of the more perverse decisions around the creation of the Hundred. But giving the women equal billing with the men, as well as first use of the pitches, has helped create a genuinely uplifting narrative as well as an entertaining drawcard, while the presence of England players throughout the competition looks set to ensure high standards. While official attendance figures for the double-headers have looked on the generous side, attempting as they do to account for people who have tickets for both games but don’t arrive until late in the day, there’s no doubt that the crowds in general have been good. Remember that the first-ever KSL match, at Headingley in 2016, was watched by fewer than 1000 people at the ground – compared to nearly 8000 at The Oval for last week’s curtain raiser. To have internationals such as Rodrigues, Dane van Niekerk and Stafanie Taylor command the stage alongside emerging stars like Lauren Bell and 16-year-old Alice Capsey, in front of thousands of spectators and a large televised audience, is tangible progress for the sport.Jemimah Rodrigues is the only batter to have come close to scoring a century•Getty ImagesNew vibe, same crowd?
The in-game experience has clearly been pitched more at families and those potentially coming to a cricket match for the first time: DJ sets and live music, pitch-side interaction on the big screens, and a simplified scoreboard, counting up to 100 balls during the first innings and then down for the second. Anecdotally, and from watching on TV, there seems to have been a greater proportion of women and children coming through the gates, certainly for the early fixtures; however, the evenings have rung to the sound of here-for-beers chanting familiar to anyone who has ever been to a T20 Blast match. Some of the spin around the competition has been laughable – notably TV presenters standing in front of near-empty stands while continually hailing the “great crowds” – but somewhere in between the PA-renditions of “Happy Birthday” to seemingly nonplussed kids, and the obligatory sunset choruses of “Don’t Take Me Home” as the business at the bars gets brisker, the ECB will be hoping a section of that near-mythical new audience has found its way through the turnstiles. The next step is to turn them into Hundred diehards.Talent show
Whether you think the new format is a ground-breaking moment for the game or a gimmicky rip-off of T20 cricket, the introduction of a pseudo-franchise tournament (because none of the new teams is technically a franchise) to the UK has certainly condensed the competition and turned up the temperature for those domestic players lucky enough to be involved. The opening rounds saw little-heralded names such as Chris Benjamin, Harry Brook, Calvin Harrison and Matthew Carter – as well as Capsey, Bell, Emma Lamb, Linsey Smith and Katie Levick – rise above the established talent to seize their moment. After the double-header at Lord’s on Thursday, London Spirit captain Eoin Morgan hailed a “finer-tuned, highly skilled competition” that pitted international regulars against the best from the county circuit, creating an environment for “young talent [to] come through and really shine”. And that’s a proposition many can get behind.

£100m Trossard upgrade: Arsenal set plan to sign "one of the world's best"

While this season is shaping up to be a spectacular one for Arsenal, Sunday was a disappointment for Mikel Arteta and Co.

The Spaniard’s team looked second best in their Premier League game against then-second-placed Chelsea, and then failed to capitalise when the Blues went down to ten men.

With that said, while it was a poor showing from the Gunners, they were without a number of the best players, like William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhães and just as important, Leandro Trossard.

The Belgian has been in scintillating form for Arsenal in recent months, and yet, if reports are to be believed, the club are looking to sign someone who’d be a significant upgrade.

Arsenal target Trossard upgrade

During the summer, it looked like Trossard would be leaving Arsenal, as he didn’t have a great campaign and was linked with clubs like Bayern Munich.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

However, the former Brighton & Hove Albion gem stayed, was handed a pay rise, and since then has played like a man possessed.

For example, it was his thunderous effort against Sunderland that ensured the Gunners left with a point, and then against Tottenham Hotspur, he scored and assisted a goal.

However, even with performances such as these, it looks like the North Londoners are looking to sign an upgrade on the 30-year-old.

At least that is according to a recent report from TEAMtalk, which claims Arsenal are interested in Michael Olise.

In fact, the report goes further, revealing that the club have placed the Frenchman at the top of their wishlist for next year and, with Sporting Director Andrea Berta, are already laying the groundwork for the deal.

However, it won’t be a cheap transfer to get over the line, with the report claiming that it will cost in excess of £100m to convince Bayern Munich to sell their star attacker.

Even so, given Olise’s immense ability and further potential, this is a deal Arsenal should be going all out for, especially as he’d be a significant upgrade on Trossard.

How Olise compares to Trossard

So the first thing to get out of the way is that, yes, Olise is primarily a right-sided player, and Trossard plays mostly on the left.

However, Arteta has made it quite clear with the signing of Noni Madueke that he is more than happy to play wingers on the opposite flank, and given the Frenchman’s immense ability, it feels like he should have no problem playing out there.

Moreover, when the former Chelsea ace has played in the team, he and Bukayo Saka have swapped sides back and forth during games, which suggests the manager has almost moved beyond the idea of a wide player starting and sticking to a position as matches progress.

With all that said, why would the former Crystal Palace star, who shone with Eberechi Eze in South London, be an upgrade on the Belgian?

Well, the first and most important reason is the simple fact that he is a far more potent goal threat, be that through scoring or assisting them.

A “magician” – according to Bayern teammate Dayot Upamecano – in 20 appearances this season, totalling 1583 minutes, he’s scored nine goals and provided ten assists, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.05 games, or every 83.31 minutes.

In contrast, the former Brighton star has scored five goals and provided five assists in 16 appearances, totalling 948 minutes, which averages out to a goal involvement every 1.6 games, or every 94.8 minutes.

The second reason is that, at just 23 years old, the 13-capped international has far more upside than the 30-year-old and should even improve in the coming seasons.

Finally, on top of his better output, the former Reading man also comes out on top when you take a look under the hood at their underlying numbers.

Ultimately, Trossard is a brilliant player, but Olise is clearly superior in practically every way and more than justifies Oliver Glasner’s claim that he’s “one of the best talents in the world.”

Therefore, even if it costs a king’s ransom, Arsenal should do all they can to sign him in 2026.

South African Marizanne Kapp has again showed how big a loss she will be to the Melbourne Stars once she leaves the WBBL for international duties. Kapp starred in the field as the Stars easily beat Hobart Hurricanes by 37 runs on Thursday at Junction Oval.Their third-straight win left the Stars second on the ladder ahead of Saturday’s massive home derby against the third-placed Melbourne Renegades. While teammate Amy Jones was Player of the Match, Kapp bowled Lizelle Lee with the first delivery of the Hurricanes innings. She removed fellow opener Danni Wyatt-Hodge in the third over and took an outstanding catch to remove No.4 Nicola Carey. But Saturday’s match will be the last for Kapp before she returns to the South African team.”Obviously Kappy is going to be a massive loss – it seems like she’s playing her best cricket, now that she’s leaving us, which is a bit frustrating,” teammate Kim Garth said. “But I feel like we do have the depth to cover it.”Garth added they were worried about what damage Lee could do.”I was pretty relieved – she was hitting them pretty well,” Garth said. “We did a lot of planning for her and when Kappy comes in and knocks her over first ball, it’s quite nice.”After starting the season with five-straight wins, Hurricanes have lost their last two and are in danger of ceding top spot to either Melbourne team.Renegades will host Perth on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s clash against the Stars, who are only one point behind Hurricanes. After Hurricanes won the toss on Wednesday at Junction Oval, Jones and Danielle Gibson gave momentum to Stars’ stalled innings and the home side reached 151 for 6 from their 20 overs. Hurricanes were bundled out for 114 with 22 deliveries left.Jones top-scored with 59 from 40 balls, featuring six fours and a six. Jones and Gibson came together at 91 for 4 in the 14th over – not yet a crisis, but Hurricanes would have felt they had the momentum.Instead, Gibson belted 39 from 27 deliveries, with five fours and a six, as they put on a quickfire 44 for the fifth wicket. Carey took 2-29 from her four overs. After Hurricanes slumped to 59 for 6, captain Elyse Villani and Hayley Silver-Holmes gave them a glimmer of hope with their 40-run stand for the seventh wicket. Then Sophie Day bowled Silver-Holmes for 18 from 14 deliveries and Sutherland bowled Villani for 38 off 21 balls to kill off the late rally.Kapp took 2 for 29 from her four overs, while Sutherland also snared two and Day cleaned up the tail on the way to 4 for 17 from three overs.

49ers keen on hiring Farke upgrade at Leeds who's a "bit like Bielsa"

Leeds United are in a dire situation. The Whites continue to lose games in the Premier League consistently, with their most recent defeat coming away to Manchester City, 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium.

Indeed, bagging two goals away to Pep Guardiola’s side was impressive, and the performance going forward was slightly better.

The Whites managed nine shots at Gianluigi Donnarumma’s goal, with four of those finding the target. They were more clinical, too, scoring two out of the three big chances they created.

Yet, with another loss, the pressure continues to mount on Daniel Farke, and the underlying numbers are evidence as to why.

Many people expected the West Yorkshire side to be in a relegation fight by the end of the season, including ESPN pundit Bill Connelly, who predicted them to finish 18th. Well, they are now in that exact position in the Premier League, with 11 points to their name.

Goalscoring has been a real issue for the Whites this term. Farke’s side have only bagged 13 goals. That is better than one side, bottom-place Wolverhampton Wanderers, who have only scored seven times.

Leeds are drastically underachieving on their expected goals, too, a metric which currently stands at 16.96 xG. That is almost four goals more than what they have managed, the third biggest underachievement in the Premier League this season.

The spread of goals in their squad is perhaps concerning, too. Summer signing Lukas Nmecha is their top scorer in the Premier League with four, and only three players have found the back of the net multiple times. Dominic Calvert-Lewin is one of those, after he scored his second of the season against City at the weekend.

Looking at those numbers, it might not be a surprise that Leeds are struggling as much as they are. It is why Farke’s job is under pressure, although an alternative could have been identified.

Leeds' Farke alternative

A recent report from talkSPORT suggests that the Whites are ‘admirers’ of former Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.

Of course, he hasn’t long been out of the game, having left the East Midlands a few months ago, but could already return to the Premier League if Leeds approach.

His first season in North London showed exactly how good he can be. Described as a “highly entertaining” manager by former Spurs star Graham Roberts, Postecoglou played high-octane football, which helped the Lilywhites qualify for the Europa League.

That is a style the Elland Road faithful might be used to. Marcelo Bielsa, one of their best managers in recent years, was famed for his energetic brand of football, a style Anthony Hudson said is “a really positive approach.”

In fact, former Chelsea and Arsenal defender William Gallas has even said that “demands remind me a little bit of Bielsa” because of how “physically exhausting” it can be. Remember Bielsa’s famed murder ball? Well, that could be back at Thorp Arch before too long.

In Postecoglou’s first campaign in the hot seat at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, the Australian won 21 games in 41 that he coached. His side were fluid going forward, bagging 79 times across all competitions.

It is interesting to look at a comparison between the numbers that Postecoglou’s Spurs put up in their first 13 games in the Premier League, compared to Farke’s side from this season. Indeed, they stack up well and hint at the attacking football he could bring to Elland Road.

For example, Spurs had scored 25 goals in those opening 13 matches in 2023/24. They were overachieving slightly when it came to expected goals, too. The Lilywhites racked up 23.83 xG, a steady pace along with their actual total.

It is easy to see how Postecoglou could be an upgrade on Farke. The Australian manager might play risky football with a high line, but it has proven to be entertaining and a good source of goals.

The numbers highlighted show what fans can expect to see if the Whites execute Postecoglou’s game plan well. He could certainly bring an exciting brand of football to Elland Road and would ultimately be an upgrade on Farke.
