Pundit says Tottenham’s Troy Parrott shouldn’t be written off

Paul Stewart reckons that Tottenham should assess Troy Parrott’s situation at the end of the season and has urged the teenager not to be written off.

The 19-year-old was handed his first-team debut by Mauricio Pochettino in an EFL Cup tie in September 2019, one of his four senior appearances for the club – all of which came in the 2019-2020 campaign.

However, Parrott’s first real taste of men’s football came when he was loaned out to the EFL last season.

The striker spent the first half of last season at Millwall, but he was recalled by Spurs before dropping down a league when he joined Ipswich after failing to score in 14 appearances for the Lions.

Parrott fared slightly better in League One, netting twice in 18 outings, although the entire campaign proved a huge learning curve for the teenager.

Since the season ended, Parrott scored his first two international goals in Republic of Ireland’s victory in Andorra, and Stewart exclusively told Football FanCast that the best might yet still be to come:

“I’ll probably refer to what happened to Kane. Nobody thought he was going turn into the player, goalscorer and captain that he’s been because he was loaned out all over the place.

“I would loan him out this season and then make a call at the end of next season and there’s expectation around him, so I wouldn’t write him off.

Snedden was free to release his own documents

No breach of the bargaining protocol occurred when New Zealand Cricket chief executive Martin Snedden released his side’s documents in the dispute with New Zealand’s players into the public arena two weeks ago.The New Zealand Cricket Players’ Association (NZCPA) had sought mediation on the matter claiming Snedden had breached the protocol.Snedden denied the claim and according to a joint release made by both parties today it was accepted that neither party had breached the protocol. The mediation did result in a reconfirmation by both parties to the bargaining protocol while concerns of the NZCPA were clarified in relation to the confidentiality provisions. Both parties agreed that:In the event any one of them should place information into the public domain, then any other party shall be free to comment publicly on that information. If one party should present information within the negotiating process then that information shall remain confidential to the parties and not be referred to the media or else where without the prior consent of the presenting party.

Captains oppose use of technology for making LBW decisions

LAHORE, July 20: Test captains have opposed the proposal of use of technology to assist umpires in adjudging leg before decisions, Pakistan skipper Waqar Younis said Saturday.Waqar observed that it would complicate matters and the umpires would become more dependent on the technology. He said the proposal, that would be experimented during September’s ICC Champions Trophy, would further slow the proceedings as each time the appeal would be referred to the third umpire.”Already the teams struggle to complete 50 overs in the stipulated time and if this is also introduced, that would make it difficult for teams that rely on fast bowlers,” he said.Waqar, who represented Pakistan in the captains conference at Lord’s earlier this week, said the International Cricket Council (ICC) admitted the point but still decided to go-ahead with the experimentation. The paceman, however, said the ICC has agreed in principle to include at least one current Test captain in the rules committee. The Pakistan captain said during the meeting, he met his Indian counterpart Saurav Ganguly and persuaded him to convince his board on the revival of cricket between the two countries. “But as always, he expressed his helplessness over the scenario saying it was entirely upto the Indian government on the revival of cricket,” he said.

Leeds United handed major finance boost

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa has been handed a major boost as some exciting news emerges from Thorp Arch about the club’s finances for the summer’s transfer window.

What’s the story?

The Whites enjoyed a superb end to the Premier League season, reeling off four wins in a row and climbing up the table and into the top ten. And that late run of form may have handed Bielsa a major boost, according to finance expert Kieran Maguire.

He said to Football Insider: “Leeds can certainly afford to spend more. They have had substantial financial developments. They finished 9th and probably budgeted to finish something like 16th.

“So realistically, they’ve got an extra £15-20m from that particular (prize money) pot. They were also chosen as the first picks for matches to be broadcast live on TV 24 times, so that’s an extra £14m. That’s because the first 10 picks are considered part of the overall deal and anything above that is an additional £1m per match.

“So we’ve automatically got around about £35m in the budget that they hadn’t originally budgeted for. The sponsors are very keen to get into bed with them too, so you’d imagine that Leeds will have a pretty good budget to work with this summer.”

Fans will be buzzing

With the Premier League’s prize money divvied up based on a team’s final finish, and scaling up for every place you end up higher, Leeds’ late flurry of victories has had a massive impact on the club’s finances for this summer.

As Maguire says, the fact they leapt up the table into ninth has given them an “extra £15-20m” based on that Premier League finish alone – after match-day 30, they were in 11th, with Crystal Palace and Southampton all within a couple of wins behind them.

Then, when you take into account the kind of money they should be getting for being selected as part of the TV coverage, things are looking very exciting for Bielsa and his plans for the summer transfer window.

Maguire himself thinks that Leeds should have around £35m more than they originally budgeted for, and when you think that sum of money is actually significantly higher than the club-record £26m they paid to sign Rodrigo, and you can see just how game-changing that could be.

Bielsa will surely be buzzing with Maguire’s claim and insight, as will the Leeds supporters who will be keen to see their club make a splash in the transfer market this summer as the Yorkshire side look to push on from an excellent first season back in the top flight.

If Leeds do have more money available than they’d budgeted for, as Maguire suggests, then their chances of getting more transfer business completed this summer will surely have increased, and that’ll be music to the ears of the club’s loyal supporters.

Meanwhile, Marcelo Bielsa is eyeing a reunion with this Leeds United hero…

Everton board ignoring fan concern over Benitez

Everton’s hunt for a new manager has now been a month-long pursuit.

A host of managers have been in the frame according to odds shown at coral offers at the signup but only one target still seems to be standing.

What’s the word?

The Toffees have been linked with the likes of Nuno Santo and Christophe Galtier but the head coach that looks set to arrive is Rafa Benitez.

The Spaniard has been in talks with Everton over the last couple of weeks, with negotiations reportedly starting to come to a close.

However, an article written by Paul Joyce in The Times shares a rather shocking revelation on the thought process of Alisher Usmanov, one of the club’s big sponsors, and Farhad Moshiri.

Joyce revealed the following: “The two billionaires are not oblivious to the fans’ reaction but have simply chosen to ignore the outpouring in the belief they are hiring a good coach, with a strong tactical understanding and someone who can improve players.

“They are tired of “losing”, according to sources, although the hire ’em, fire ’em policy and haphazard manner in which previous managerial appointments have been conducted means Everton have been their own worst enemy in terms of on-field progress since Moshiri came on board in February 2016.”

Supporters will be appalled

2021 appears to be a game of ‘which owners can upset their club’s supporters the most’.

Earlier this year, the Premier League’s big and now greedy six, attempted to break away from UEFA’s continental competitions – the Champions League and Europa League – to join a brand new European Super League.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-everton-manager-transfer-nuno-conte-wood-marcelo” title= “Read the latest Everton manager and transfer news!”]

They were going to be joined by the continents biggest and best teams but that fell by the wayside after significant fan pressure.

Protests were held outside stadiums and social media campaigns were started that threw smoke in the faces of the likes of Daniel Levy at Tottenham, Stan Kroenke at Arsenal and The Glazers at Manchester United.

On this occasion, fan power won. It told the billionaires in charge of their respective clubs that supporters hold a great stronghold over what goes on behind the scenes.

Although their initial ploy to break away acted as a crime against football, the way they immediately pulled out spoke volumes.

Of course, the situation now unravelling at Everton is a very different set of events but Moshiri and co had an opportunity here to demonstrate that they do care about their own supporters by not hiring a manager with connections to their fierce rivals.

The Goodison Park faithful have protested against the idea of Benitez becoming their new manager due to his allegiances to Liverpool but the board don’t seem to care about that.

If the 61-year-old is successful on the blue side of Merseyside then surely all be forgiven. Unfortunately for Benitez, he might not be given the platform to achieve his goals by the crowd.

The fans should be appalled by what’s occurring.

Imran puts Karachi in command

A strokeful and chanceless century by Imran Javed put Karachi Whites in the drivers seat against Faisalabad at stumps on the second day of the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy match at the National Stadium Wednesday

14-Feb-2002A strokeful and chanceless century by Imran Javed put Karachi Whites in the drivers seat against Faisalabad at stumps on the second day of the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy match at the National Stadium Wednesday. The fast-improving 21-year-old Imran finished unbeaten at 112 as the home team recovered from a precarious 135 for five to 311 for six. They lead Faisalabad by 88 runs with two days and four wickets to spare.Imran added 134 runs for the fifth wicket in as many minutes with Shadab Kabir who battled flu to contributed 48 at No 6 before being declared caught behind. Shadab’s walk to the dressing room suggested he might have been a bit unlucky.Faisalabad paceman Moazzam Ali caused the maximum damage when he finished with four wickets for 95 runs from 23 overs, including three wickets in 38 balls in a post-lunch spell. But the hero of the day was Imran Javed who is rapidly blossoming into a fine stroke-maker.The youngster has fully capitalized from his excellent form as he has amassed runs 456 (67*, 78*, 125*, 0, 41, 18, 15, 112*) in the ongoing tournament. He averages 114.Imran’s commitment and concentration can be judged from the fact that he has faced 160 balls during his 205 minutes innings while 82 of his runs have come from 19 boundaries and a six.Experienced Ghulam Ali was the other notable Karachi batsman while scoring a typical attractive 54 that included nine punishing boundaries. Fortunate to have been caught off a no-ball and then dropped when 24, Ghulam Ali added 82 for the second wicket with Saeed bin Nasir (38) who also benefited from a dropped catch by Aqeel Khan off his own bowling. If three Karachi players were down with flu, three Faisalabad boys were injured. But the injury to Aqeel while attempting to catch Saeed proved costly as he failed to take the field after bowling 28 deliveries.

Everton fans on Nuno manager update

Some Everton fans have been left to rage as a manager update emerged on Nuno Espirito Santo.

As per talkSPORT, the Goodison Park faithful are set to try and make the former Wolves boss their next coach, following the departure of Carlo Ancelotti to Real Madrid.

Although Nuno initially did very well in getting the Midlands Club up to the Premier League from the EFL Championship, followed by two consecutive seventh-placed finishes, his team finished in a pretty dismal 13th spot in the 2020/21 season (Transfermarkt).

Often operating with five defenders, he can be seen as a defensive coach, something that some members of the Merseyside club faithful are very much against, especially considering that they only scored a mere 47 goals in the top flight last term, the lowest by far in the top half and fewer than 11th-placed Aston Villa as well (Sky Sports).

Desperate times

West Indies cricket teams have been faced with desperate situations inthe past few years and today is no exception.Down 1-3 in the seven-match Cable & Wireless One-Day Internationalseries against South Africa, they go to Kensington Oval this morningin a must-win situation to keep alive their hopes of winning thetrophy. We need to get desperate from this game, but it shouldn’t have come tothis stage, captain Carl Hooper said yesterday after a morningpractice session that attracted a large crowd at Queen’s Park.We should have been desperate a long time ago to pull even with theseguys.Hooper and the West Indies are still upbeat about their chances. But against the background of three successive, comprehensive defeats, there are others who have a dim view.A general worker at Kensington said yesterday it might be easier forLord Nelson or Bussa to wuk-up than for the West Indies to win amatch. He might be among a small group, but the truth is that in the lastthree encounters, the West Indies were hardly competitive. And Hooper knows it too.A couple of games ago I was trying to emphasise that I was a bitconcerned about the bowling, he said. The batting is now a problem as well. We’ve played four One-Day games so far and our highest score is 220.That is a bit worrying given the fact that sometimes we have played asmany as eight batters. We must bat and bat properly. Regardless of if we bat first or last,we must be able to give the bowlers a score that they can work with.Hooper himself is peeved he has not been able to convert his promisingstarts into significant contributions. In every match, he looked theclass batsman we know he is, but returns of 43, 48, 29 and 46 haveunderstandably frustrated his followers.Obviously I am disappointed with the 40s. I’m not making any excuses,he said. The times when I have got out, they have been 10, 12, 15 overs left. Icould have gone on to get, if not a hundred, 70s, 80s, 90s.After two defeats by eight wickets and another by 132 runs, thebiggest margin of victory for the South Africans in 22 One-DayInternationals against the West Indies, Mike Findlay and fellowselectors have made adjustments to the 14-man squad that was utilisedfor the first four matches. There is a recall for opening batsman Daren Ganga, whose record in theshorter form of the game hardly suggests encouragement. The 21-year-old Trinidadian, who takes Ricardo Powell’s place at thetop of the innings, averages seven in as many matches. His techniqueand temperament, however, are as good as anyone else’s in theCaribbean.Ganga had two difficult tours South Africa and Australia and he hasbeen given the opportunity here in the Caribbean in conditions that heis familiar with, Hooper said. The second and final change in the squad is perhaps the mostinteresting. The inclusion of leg-spinner Dinanath Ramnarine ahead of left-armerNeil McGarrell, could prove decisive in the middle of the innings. There is a possibility that Ramnarine may try to bowl outside the legstump as he did so effectively in the Antigua Test, but it could be abit of a risk in the One-Day game.Ramnarine has got a part to play. We’ve been struggling to takewickets in the middle overs, Hooper said. He’s been brought into thesquad so he can play that role and pose a bit more variation and punchto the attack. In the first four matches, South Africa were able to launch theirinnings with calculated aggression which has caused the West Indiesmajor problems in containing them in the first 15 overs. In successive matches, by the time the field restrictions were eased,South Africa had raced to 67, 70, 88 and 74, and in each match theWest Indies took just one wicket in that period.Herschelle Gibbs, in particular, was very successful in charging thefast bowlers, but Hooper said there wasn’t a likelihood a spinnerwould be given the new ball to counter the problem.A spinner has been introduced before the 15 overs and hasn’t provedthat effective, the West Indies captain said.Opening with a spinner with the new ball is a big ask. Even though Ihave been successful in bowling in the middle stages of the game, Idon’t think it is something that we want to do.

Conor McGregor keen on Celtic stake

If you thought the ongoing manager saga at Celtic was providing enough drama, then think again.

The Bhoys hierarchy have been on the hunt for a new manager for nearly three months now but that might not be the only thing Dermot Desmond has on his mind anymore.

What’s the word?

As well as being locked in negotiations to bring Eddie Howe to Paradise, Celtic have been keen to bring in a figure to take on their newly created director of football role.

It’s thought that Fergal Harkin and Richard Hughes are among the contenders but the root of Celtic’s problems stem far deeper than their transfer history.

After all, it is Dermot Desmond and Peter Lawwell who call the vast majority of the shots.

Lawwell will retire at the end of the season with Dominic McKay arriving to replace him but could a reduced role be on the cards for Desmond as well?

Well, after an audacious claim from the Notorious himself, Mr Conor McGregor, there could be a further change on the cards at Celtic.

Taking to Twitter in the early hours of Monday morning, the MMA superstar revealed that he wanted to invest in the Hoops after being asked whether he could get involved with Manchester United.

The UFC fighter said: “A conversation came up regarding Celtic first to be honest. To acquire shares from Dermot Desmond. I am certainly interested in acquiring a sports team at some stage! Both Celtic and Man United are teams I like for sure. But I am open. I feel I could do big things for a club.”

Time to sell?

McGregor may not have a background in football but if Dermot Desmond’s influence on Celtic is waning, it can only be a good thing for the Bhoys.

The Irishman appears to care about the club, regularly being snapped in Celtic jerseys while he previously professed his love for Kieran Tierney during an interview.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-howe-favre-mcgregor-mccann-tierney” title=”Read the latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

That said, if Desmond does indeed decide to sell some of his shares, it would be a pleasing sight for supporters regardless of who it was going to.

After all, the businessman has left Celtic in the lurch in recent years with mass protests occurring outside Parkhead against his ownership.

The club’s majority shareholder was questioned about his stake as recently as March but his response was defiant.

“I am as passionate about Celtic as any other supporter. My shares are not for sale,” he commented.

Desmond may have been in charge of the club during their haul of nine Premiership titles in a row but it’s hard to argue that things behind the scenes have been run very well.

It was he, alongside Ian Bankier and Lawwell, who sanctioned the arrival of Neil Lennon back in 2019.

Celtic had just been given £10m in compensation fees for Brendan Rodgers but they decided against being ambitious and investing that back into finding a renowned manager. The result of which has been a disastrous season where they now sit 23 points off top spot.

Whether it be transfer strategies or coaching appointments, the Glaswegian’s have been run poorly for a while now.

To have a new investor on board with fresh and ambitious ideas would be a bright sign of hope for the Hoops.
