White grabs five in Edinburgh

Scorecard
Graeme White’s first five-wicket haul took Nottinghamshire up to second place in the Clydesdale Bank 40 Group C as Scotland suffered a second defeat in as many days in Edinburgh. Half-centuries from Alex Hales (69), the recalled Matt Wood (60) and former England allrounder Samit Patel (61) set Championship leaders Nottinghamshire up for a big total of 256 for 6 after they won the toss at the Grange. Scotland were 213 all out in 35.3 overs in reply, to lose by 43 runs.Thrashed by Kent by nine wickets yesterday, the home side got off to a flying start chasing down Notts’ total and were keeping pace with the run rate until left-arm spinner White (5 for 35) intervened with four wickets in less than eight overs.Home captain Gavin Hamilton (42) was the first to fall in the 13th over when he was caught and bowled by the 23-year-old after helping his side reach 83 without loss. George Bailey (12) followed in identical fashion in the 19th over, with White striking again four balls later when he had 18-year-old debutant Freddie Coleman caught behind by former England wicketkeeper Chris Read.Former Scotland captain Ryan Watson was White’s final caught-and-bowled victim, departing in the 20th over having struck 48. The home side had fallen well below the required run rate and continued to ship wickets as they attempted to up the pace.Neil McCallum made 19 before being removed by Steven Mullaney and Majid Haq contributed just six, falling to Andy Carter (1 for 28). Richie Berrington, batting at No. 5, was providing decent, if futile, resistance as he edged towards a half-century.But batting partners continued to desert him, keeper Marc Petrie (6)succumbing to Paul Franks, Gordon Drummond (1) undone by returning England World Twenty20 hero Ryan Sidebottom and Goudie (11) by Mullaney. Berrington, who top-scored with 54, was last to fall when he was stumped by Read off White.Notts’ 250-plus total was down to a real team effort with the bat but Hales was the star with nine fours and a six in his 51-ball innings. His was the second wicket to fall in the 18th over after fellow opener Neil Edwards departed for 11 inside seven overs.Their scalps were claimed by Drummond and Ross Lyons, respectively, but Goudie proved Scotland’s star with the ball, taking three of the next four Notts wickets to finish with 3 for 56. His victims included Wood, former England international Ali Brown (4) and Mullaney (23). Captain Read was unbeaten on 22 alongside Franks (1).

Kolkata clinch hard-fought victory

In stark contrast to the silence that accompanied the listless defence against Kings XI Punjab, the Eden Gardens faithful responded passionately to a charged performance from Kolkata Knight Riders

The Bulletin by George Binoy07-Apr-2010
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsVirender Sehwag’s half-century was his slowest in the IPL•Indian Premier League

In stark contrast to the silence that accompanied the listless defence against Kings XI Punjab, the Eden Gardens faithful responded passionately to a charged performance from Kolkata Knight Riders, which derailed Delhi Daredevils’ chase to secure an invaluable 14-run victory. At the heart of the turnaround was Sourav Ganguly, who scored a half-century to build a challenging total, after which he fielded like few believed he could: the direct hit that ran out Gautam Gambhir ended a threatening 99-run partnership and turned the game Kolkata’s way.The result took them level on 10 points with Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore, the fourth-placed team.It nearly didn’t happen for Kolkata though. Virender Sehwag, who was reprieved on 7 when the umpire failed to hear or see an edge, threatened to deliver Delhi their seventh win. His partnership with Gambhir put Delhi on course and he completed a 34-ball half-century, his slowest in the IPL. It was greeted with silence by Eden Gardens. Delhi needed 48 off 32 balls with seven wickets in hand when Ajit Agarkar’s inswinger crashed into Sehwag’s stumps, and the slide had begun.Ajantha Mendis, chosen ahead of Shane Bond because of a dry pitch, had Kedar Jadhav caught at cover – Ganguly jumping to intercept a hard drive – in the 17th over. The next, from left-arm spinner Iqbal Abdulla, was pivotal. He bowled Farveez Maharoof with one that pitched middle and hit off, before reacting athletically to run out Rajat Bhatia three balls later. The decisive blow was struck by Ashok Dinda in the penultimate over when Dinesh Karthik, Kolkata’s last threat, pulled to Brendon McCullum at midwicket. His exit left Delhi needing 30 off 10 balls, a task too hard for Daniel Vettori and Amit Mishra. It was fitting that Dinda landed the last blow, for he had struck the first during an astonishing opening over. He hurried David Warner with four skiddy deliveries, cramping him for room, before beating him with the fifth – a quick one that uprooted offstump before Warner had brought his bat down. Delhi knew then that they were in for a scrap.Unlike Ganguly, who used the pace of Dinda, Agarkar and Angelo Mathews, Gambhir instructed his bowlers – from Maharoof to Rajat Bhatia – to take the pace of the ball. It didn’t work immediately for Kolkata made their best score at the end of ten overs this season – 88 – and had all wickets intact.Chris Gayle, who had scored 40 off 21, fell soon after though, missing a swipe against Bhatia, and Ganguly followed in similar fashion against Vettori. Brendon McCullum was run out cheaply too and Kolkata scored only 30 runs between overs 12 and 16 to reach 130 for 3.The innings needed acceleration and it was provided by Mathews and Tiwary. Mathews had been dropped Bhatia on 10 – a caught and bowled opportunity – and he made Delhi pay with two well-aimed blows over long-on. Tiwary joined in the hitting right at the end, and they boosted the innings by taking 18 runs off Mishra’s last over. Their partnership was worth 70 in 6.5 overs, and it helped set Delhi a testing target in a match vital to Kolkata’s semi-final chances.

Everton predicted XI vs Brighton

Everton haven’t played a game of football in over a fortnight, going back to their last game in December, against Chelsea where they snatched a draw with an extremely weakened team that saw seven key players missing.

Despite fixture postponements killing the opportunity for the Toffees to add points on the board, it has been a blessing in disguise for Rafa Benitez who has had a squad plagued with injuries and virus outbreaks over the last month, with fixture cancellations offering a break for Everton to rest and regain fitness in key areas of their team.

With that being said, here is the predicted starting XI Football FanCast expects to see at Goodison Park against Brighton this afternoon.

We expect to see five changes to Benitez’s side with one particular player back in the side that will come as a surprise to fans as Lucas Digne is predicted to be included in the starting line-up against the Seagulls.

The £110k-per-week left-back has been out of favour in the side since his last appearance against Liverpool in the Merseyside derby over a month ago, with a rumoured feud with the Everton manager over tactics being blamed for his absence.

However, after being spotted back in first-team training this week, it’s an opportunity for the manager and player to put their differences aside, as Benitez will be desperate to get his first win in three.

One addition that fans will be thrilled to see is the inclusion of Dominic Calvert-Lewin for the first time since September. The star striker has been teasing a long-awaited return from a quadriceps injury that has taken a long time to repair, with the 28-year-old suffering a setback in October.

Calvert-Lewin can certainly add more creativity and a better attacking threat that will intimidate the Brighton defence today, scoring three goals in his only three outings this term, which will be especially welcome due to the absence of Richarlison through injury.

The three other additions to the team are Everton’s joint top goal scorer Demarai Gray, Toffees captain, Seamus Coleman and Brazilian midfielder, Allan.

Benitez will need to do everything he can to seize the home advantage opportunity at Goodison Park today against Brighton, with a three-point win crucial to the side’s Premier League campaign.

A victory could put the side ahead of Southampton in 13th and should put the Toffees well clear of the relegation zone if results go their way.

Isso me deixa feliz. Me dediquei muito para que isso fosse possível – finalizou.

Newcastle eye Arsenal ace Maitland-Niles

Newcastle United are reportedly eyeing up a potential move to sign Ainsley Maitland-Niles in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Opportunity?

There may be a good opportunity for the St James’ Park club to sign the 24-year-old next month, as The Daily Mail have reported that he is ‘irritated’ by the lack of action that he is currently getting at the Emirates Stadium.

The Englishman has not played in the Premier League since the Gunners’ 4-0 drubbing at Liverpool last month, and he has started just two games in total, only playing the full 90 minutes once (Transfermarkt).

Given that he only has 18 months left on his current deal, Mikel Arteta’s team may look at January as the best possible time to sell.

The Latest: Newcastle monitoring

According to The Daily Mail, Newcastle are now ‘monitoring’ Maitland-Niles’ situation in north London ahead of a potential swoop in the winter window.

However, Everton could revisit the interest that they had previously showed in him in the summer, and a number of other clubs could also come in if he is made available.

The Verdict: Smart move

The Magpies should be familiar with Maitland-Niles and what he could offer given that they have faced a few times in the top flight. In fact, he has won more matches against them (five) than any other team in his career so far (Transfermarkt).

Nonetheless, despite his lack of playing time so far this season, he is still a ‘huge talent’ as Arteta has pointed out, and has probably not reached his full potential yet at 24 years of age. His ability to play in a number of different roles on the pitch would also be very useful to Eddie Howe if Newcastle start to pick up a lot of injuries or suspensions.

If Maitland-Niles can rekindle the form which got him in the England squad under Gareth Southgate last year, then he would surely be a valuable asset on Tyneside.

Rahane and Kukreja strengthen Mumbai

Scorecard
On another soporific day of cricket, Mumbai’s top order returned to form against a listless Hyderabad attack to seize control of the match. The biggest gain on a dominant day for Mumbai was the chanceless innings from Ajinkya Rahane, his first major contribution this Ranji season. He combined with opener Sahil Kukreja for a patient, unbroken 171-run stand to leave Hyderabad nervously glancing at scores from the match featuring their companions at the bottom of Group A, Himachal Pradesh. It had been a promising start from Hyderabad’s bowlers, troubling the Mumbai openers in the 10 overs before lunch. Vinayak Samant, the latest occupant of the merry-go-round at the top of Mumbai’s batting, faced a particularly torrid over from Ashwin Yadav – surviving a massive lbw shout, then barely getting to block a ball, which kept lower than he expected.Samant was gone three balls after the break, prodding at a delivery outside off giving wicketkeeper Ibrahim Khaleel a regulation catch. Hyderabad were buoyed by the wicket, and Ajinkya Rahane’s entry was greeted by a shout of (we’ll get him, he was talking a lot while fielding) from fast bowler MP Arjun at fine leg. There wasn’t to be any more breakthroughs for Hyderabad, though, as Rahane and Kukreja cut out the flash shots and unrelentingly pushed Mumbai forward. The pair was initially helped by a diet of legstump offerings, which were clipped towards midwicket for some cheap runs. Their running between the wickets was also sharper than Hyderabad’s batsmen, shown by the many threes that Mumbai picked up.The bowling started to flag in the face of the solid batting, with the lack of pace in the surface allowing the wicketkeeper to stand up to the hulking fast bowler, Shoaib Ahmed. Hyderabad shuffled their bowlers around to no avail. The frustration increased when their complaints about the condition of the ball were not heeded by the umpire – there were eight appeals from the home side before the ball was finally changed (for the second time in the innings).Things perked up just before tea as Rahane punched a full delivery past Arjun for four and followed it up with a cover-driven boundary to bring up his half-century. Soon after tea, Kukreja reached his fifty in even finer style, blasting Amol Shinde for a six over long-on.By now, both batsman were in fine touch and the run-rate started to make a slow ascent. Kukreja charged down the track, even to the fast bowlers, and worked them around for singles, while Rahane’s drives and flicks kept him moving along. Arjun’s annoyance at his lack of impact showed when he flung the ball back towards Rahane after a defensive push from the batsman. With no encouragement in the wicket for the bowlers, it seemed the most interesting question towards stumps was which of the batsmen would reach triple figures first. Inexplicably, though, both batsmen shut shop after moving into the 80s, playing out four maidens, after 25 consecutive scoring overs. The Mumbai top order’s efforts came after a 20-over spell of resistance from the Hyderabad tail. Overnight batsman Syed Quadri slapped the third ball of the day through cover to reach his half-century, but there was no rush to move the score along when batting with the lower order. Just as Mumbai were getting antsy at getting only one wicket in 19 overs on the day, a couple of run-outs ended Hyderabad’s go-slow at 266.Mumbai coach, Praveen Amre, termed those two run-outs “the best thing to see” but was even more thrilled with Rahane’s performance. “Everyone was looking for runs from Rahane,” he said, “and he looked rock solid and very confident. There was pressure on him because Mumbai isn’t a side that carries non-performers, the person who is sitting out is equally good.”Mumbai have been at 14 for 2, or worse, at least once in each of their matches this season, so the big stand was just what they needed. “They have given us a solid foundation, more than 150 runs partnership after a long time,” Amre said. “The top order had to contribute, their failure wasputting a lot of pressure on the middle order.”There was even more good news for him as Rohit Sharma’s shoulder injury proved to be not too serious. The only relief for Hyderabad, though, was that Manpreet Gony had shot out HP for 82 after Punjab had conceded a first-innings lead.

West Ham could turn to Bremer

As per Calciomercato.it, a West Ham United transfer update has come to light involving Torino powerhouse Gleison Bremer.

The Lowdown: West Ham injuries mount…

Over the last few weeks, manager David Moyes has had to cope with mounting injury problems at the back for West Ham as his side keep fighting on all fronts.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Angelo Ogbonna ruptured his ACL in the 3-2 victory over Liverpool last month, requiring surgery, and Kurt Zouma has become the latest centre-back sidelined after a hamstring injury (Daily Mail).

This has prompted Moyes to turn his attention to the January market as he confirms the search for a centre-half may well be on, with Calciomercato.it now providing news on a fresh face they could turn to.

The Latest: West Ham could turn to Bremer…

Naming the Serie A defenders West Ham could now turn to in January, one of them is Torino powerhouse Bremer.

The Brazilian, lauded as one of the highest performers in Italy’s top flight this season, is valued at around €18 million (£15.4m) by club president Urbano Cairo.

Sharing the Irons’ interest in their centre-half, Calciomercato.it also name drop the likes of Daniele Rugani and Nikola Milenkovic.

The Verdict: Exciting option…

For just £15.4m, West Ham could be signing a real gem, especially considering his age, form and the fact he has even outshined Zouma in many aspects.

According to WhoScored, the 24-year-old has eclipsed Zouma’s rate of tackles, interceptions and aerial duels won per 90 domestically this year with Serie A experts branding Bremer as ‘strong’ and ‘powerful’ (Conor Clancy).

The aggressive ace, still a fairly young age, could also leave Turin at a reasonable price considering all of these factors and he has emerged as a really exciting option for West Ham.
