'Lógica alvinegra': Corinthians empata sem gols com o Grêmio

MatériaMais Notícias

Deu a ‘lógica alvinegra’.

West Indies still carry the Ambrose effect

Whatever state West Indies cricket is in, there are some players from the islands who will never lose their aura. Curtly Ambrose is one of them, particularly for South Africans.

Curtly Ambrose carries his aura even with his playing days long behind him•WICB

Whatever state West Indies cricket is in, there are some players from the islands who will never lose their aura. Curtly Ambrose is one of them, particularly for South Africans. The four wickets Ambrose took on the final day of South Africa’s comeback Test in 1992, which took his innings tally to six and his match haul to eight, derailed a South African chase which seemed certain to reach the station. Ambrose’s achievement that day was down to the same thing he said has contributed to the South African pace pack’s successes: “Consistency”.He admitted that ingredient alone will be required by the West Indian batsmen to bring out their “A game” if they hope to compete against South Africa but cautioned against writing the visitors off completely. “I feel very confident with where we are at the moment and I believe that we are going to do well, contrary to what others may believe,” Ambrose, who is West Indies bowling consultant said. “We all know South Africa is the No. 1 team in the world but we are prepared.”South Africa have already identified the West Indian bowlers as a bigger threat than their batsmen and the knowledge they are being mentored by Ambrose may only underline that. But Ambrose did not want to put too much emphasis on his coaching, describing it as much tougher than actually stepping on the field on match day. “It’s a lot different coaching than bowling,” he said. “It can be frustrating as a coach because as a bowler I have always believed I can work magic with the ball in my hand. As a coach you can take to the guys and if they are not doing what you ask, it can become frustrating. It was easier being a bowler than a coach.”But he current crop of West Indian quicks have not given Ambrose any “trouble” and he praised them for “working hard and showing improvement”. He did not want to compare them to the great packs of the past or to name individuals who he thought would make the biggest impact, instead preferring to preach the collective philosophy. “It’s a different era and we have to work with what we have. I don’t want to single out any one. Its all about the team,” he said. “No one bowler can win a game for you, it takes a team. As long we play together as a team, we will do well here.”His advice to them on South African wickets, which are among the spiciest they would have played on is “not to get too carried away” by the assistance. “The most important thing is to maintain your focus,” he said. “Even though the pitch is bouncy, you have to put the ball in the right areas consistently. You won’t see us doing anything out of the ordinary.”That may also mean West Indies will not opt for an all-pace attack even though that formula was how they won their only Test in South Africa in 2007. “It doesn’t mean because we won with four fast bowlers last time that we are going to win again,” Ambrose said “I’m a bit of a realist. It depends on the track you are going to play on and the conditions. That will determine your bowling line-up.”SuperSport Park’s healthy green covering was all but completely stripped off on Monday, two days before the match. Some regrowth may still be left on it for the Test match, which is why Ambrose said he “tries not to look at the wicket prior to the game. I wait for the morning of the game and make assessment then.”One thing he could confirm was that the West Indian bowlers will approach this series in the same way Ambrose approached bowling throughout his career. “We’re not going to bowl any lengths for them to drive,” he said. And as he did, some of the old snarl snuck back out and the South African batsmen may have had reason to shudder, even if only for a moment.

PCB defends Waqar appointment

The PCB has defended its decision to name Waqar Younis as the national team’s head coach, a day after Mohsin Khan blasted the appointment process

ESPNcricinfo staff09-May-2014The PCB has defended its decision to name Waqar Younis as the national team’s head coach, a day after Mohsin Khan blasted the appointment process. Mohsin, one of the contenders for the coach’s job, had called the process a ‘total farce’, questioning why he had not been interviewed.Zaheer Abbas, the former Pakistan captain who is now principal advisor to the PCB chairman, explained why Mohsin had not been interviewed. “The procedure is that we usually interview candidates about whom we have no or little information,” Abbas said. “But Mohsin’s case was different; he is quite familiar to us and we are aware of his strengths and weaknesses.”Mohsin had previously been Pakistan’s coach in 2012, when he guided them to a famous 3-0 Test series sweep against then No. 1 England. Mohsin and Waqar were in the race for the top role and on Tuesday, the PCB appointed Waqar, who returned for a second term after his previous stint between March 2010 and August 2011.Another former Pakistan captain, Intikhab Alam, who is now PCB’s director of domestic cricket, also defended Waqar’s appointment. “For the position of head coach we took a lot of other factors into account,” Alam said. “We looked at an applicant’s ability to be inclusive and take players along with him. After reviewing all seven applications on merit, we recommended Waqar Younis.”

Merai ton leads Gujarat fightback

ScorecardBhargav Merai scored his second century of the season•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Bhargav Merai’s second first-class century helped Gujarat mount a solid reply as they looked to hunt down Haryana’s mammoth first-innings total in Ahmedabad. He and Venugopal Rao, the other unbeaten batsman, still have considerable work to do as the home side went to stumps 259 runs behind.Gujarat took more than 20 overs to move from 68 to 96 – a run rate of 1.36 – but the arrival of their captain Parthiv Patel instilled life into the innings. His 44-ball 37 was part of a 71-run stand with Merai which was accumulated at 4.68 per over. When he was out leg before to medium-pacer Ashish Hooda, Rao ensured a similar rhythm was maintained as he struck nine fours and a six in his 64.Gujarat, who are placed fifth in Group A, have one more day left to snare a first-innings lead and collect a crucial three points and push past mid-table mediocrity.Read the full report of Mumbai v Odisha here: Odisha fight to prevent innings defeatRead the full report of Karnataka v Punjab here: Vinay ton leaves Punjab battling for survivalRead the full report of Delhi v Vidarbha here: Delhi stay in hunt with crushing win

Sri Lanka A finished the rain-affected first day of the first unofficial Test against New Zealand A on 115 for 3, thanks in part to an unbeaten 49 from Kaushal Silva. Rain delayed the start of the match, then returned to interfere after 21 overs, before impeding play for a third and final time, in the afternoon. Only 40 overs were possible in the day.Kusal Perera’s lean trot with the bat did not improve, as he was caught behind for 2 off Mark Gillespie during the fifth over of the day. Gillespie also trapped captain Dinesh Chandimal in front for 6, to finish with the day’s best figures of 2 for 40. Corey Anderson took the other wicket – that of the opener Dimuth Karunaratne.Silva and Ashan Priyanjan had put on an unbeaten stand of 48 when stumps were drawn.

Dambulla to return as international venue

International men’s cricket will return to Dambulla International Stadium in November after a three-year hiatus

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Jun-2013International men’s cricket will return to Dambulla International Stadium in November after a three-year hiatus, Sri Lanka Cricket has said. The stadium is built on lands owned by the nearby Buddhist temple and the hiatus partly resulted from a disagreement between SLC and the clergy, who believed the sale of alcohol and tobacco at the venue was a breach of the lease agreement. The SLC release said the board had had discussions with senior Buddhist clergy and come to an understanding on the use of the venue. Dambulla had hosted day/night matches in the past but because the stadium floodlights now fall short of the minimum standards required by ICC, it will only host day matches in the near future.”It was suggested at the executive committee meeting to upgrade or reinstall a new floodlight system as per new ICC regulations in the future by SLC,” the release said. “Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket stadium will host one New Zealand ODI in November 2013.” New Zealand were involved in the last series that was played at Dambulla as well, where they and India were beaten by Sri Lanka. The stadium has in the past been a valuable asset to SLC, as it is located in Sri Lanka’s dry-zone, which is less susceptible to bad weather during the monsoon seasons. The stadium had hosted a three-match ODI series between West Indies Women and Sri Lanka Women in February this year.
