THFC: Robinson on Dier’s Spurs future

In a recent interview, former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson discussed Eric Dier’s future at Spurs, as well as tipping the club to land a new centre-back this summer.

Having been an integral part of Jose Mourinho’s defence for the best part of the season, over recent weeks Dier has found his game-time becoming more limited under the manager, who himself claimed that the centre-back was going through something of a crisis of confidence.

However, the £22.5m-rated 27-year-old hit back at the criticism he has faced, suggesting that he is happy with his level of performance for Spurs so far this season.

In a recent interview with Football Insider, Robinson stated his belief that Mourinho is still a big fan of Dier, but went on to suggest that the 58-year-old will look to add depth to the centre-back position this summer.

He said: “I still think Jose is a big fan of Dier. I think he will be a part of the plans moving forward even though I think they will sign another centre-half in the summer. Yes, he has looked susceptible of late but so has Davinson Sanchez. I think another centre-half would help, and competition for places is always a good thing.”

Transfer Tavern Take

Dier has been in unremarkable form over his 21 Premier League appearances for Tottenham so far this season, averaging 0.8 tackles, 0.9 interceptions 4.8 clearances and 1.1 blocks per game, culminating in an average WhoScored match rating of 6.71 – ranking him as the club’s 12th-best performer in the top flight, and their third-best centre-back.

With Mourinho reportedly informing Daniel Levy of his desire to add a top-class centre-back to the Spurs defence last summer, and subsequently failing to do so, it would not be surprising to see Tottenham target a new addition to the position this summer, be that at the expense of or alongside Dier.

Predicted Sheff Wed XI vs Barnsley - team news

Sheffield Wednesday will be looking to end a winless run of eight straight matches this afternoon, though standing in their way are not just their arch-rivals but a team vying for a spot in the playoffs too.

The Owls make the short trip to Oakwell to face Barnsley in the south Yorkshire derby in a game that is second-bottom against fifth place.

Darren Moore has plenty to ponder over team selection, so with that in mind, here’s the XI we’re predicting today…

There could be as many as three changes from the side drew to Huddersfield Town in midweek.

Moore will be sweating on the fitness of Sam Hutchinson, who has been filling in at centre-back amid the Owls’ mounting injury problems. Joost van Aken, Chey Dunkley and Dominic Iorfa are all sidelined through injury.

Hutchinson was withdrawn early at Hillsborough after picking up a knock and according to the 46-year-old,  his potential involvement is “an eleventh-hour decision,” so we’re expecting the 31-year-old veteran to not be risked.

That would mean a recall for Osaze Urhoghide, who comes back in to partner Tom Lees and Julian Borner, in front of goalkeeper Keiren Westwood.

Adam Reach is expected to continue at left wing-back, with Kadeem Harris dropping back into a similar role to allow a change further up the pitch.

Skipper Barry Bannan should also remain from midweek, though this time he’s joined by Celtic-bound 20-year-old Liam Shaw, which means Joey Pelupessy is axed. The Dutchman’s display on Wednesday was rather poor, as we outlined here, so he’s an obvious casualty from the starting XI.

Calum Paterson could return to the line-up in the third and final change, replacing Liam Palmer. He may have scored an own goal against the Terriers, but is still their joint top goalscorer.

Moore may also continue with a front two of Josh Windass and Jordan Rhodes, meaning Elias Kachunga and Jack Marriott will have to continue to wait for their opportunities.

AND in other news, Sheffield Wednesday have another Almen Abdi in £18k-p/w flop…

WBA fans slam Pereira vs Everton

West Bromwich Albion fans were far from happy with the performance of Matheus Pereira during their 1-0 defeat to Everton on Thursday.

The Baggies were beaten 1-0 at the Hawthorns by the Toffees, with Richarlison scoring the only goal of the game. It was a close affair, with both sides having three shots on target (SofaScore), but Sam Allardyce’s side were unable to get anything from the match after a late equaliser was disallowed for offside.

The defeat leaves them nine points from safety with just 11 games left to play (Sky Sports).

Pereira was far from at this best against Carlo Ancelotti’s side. He won just two of his seven duels and lost possession a whopping 24 times throughout the game, the joint-most of any Baggies player.

Despite being one of West Brom’s most creative players, he has too often been a passenger this term.

The Baggies supporters were not scared to share their thoughts on the 24-year-old, and they took to social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about Pereira below

“Pereira has been absolutely awful he’s only still on the pitch because we don’t have anyone good enough to replace him”

“How did pereira play 90 mins today he was awful”

“He’s not been the same since Krov left, just got gradually worse. I would drop him, till he gets his head right.”

“Decent performance that can’t be to disheartened but if there’s one negative it’s pereira been shocking lately and we as albion fans massively over hype him #wba”

“what? pereira was by far the worst player on the pitch”

Token point but in games like this where you need a bit of directness and goal threat at the death, can’t fathom why Robinson didn’t get minutes over HRK and Pereira who needed to be hooked #wba”

Liverpool handed potential Haaland boost

Liverpool look to have been handed a potential boost in their hopes of signing Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund this summer.

The Norwegian’s agent, the renowned Mino Raiola, has suggested in a recent interview that only 10 clubs worldwide can afford to sign the 20-year-old phenomenon ahead of next season, four of which are in the Premier League.

The Mirror suggests that these English teams are Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea – and with the Reds having been linked with a move for the former RB Salzburg striker in the past, it comes as a boost that they are on a relatively small shortlist of clubs who can reportedly afford to sign him.

Haaland has been a goal machine in his short career thus far, having excelled with Salzburg before his move to Germany, where he has subsequently contributed an extraordinary 43 goals and 10 assists in just 43 appearances for Borussia Dortmund.

The striker has a release clause of £68 million with the Bundesliga side, but that only becomes active in the summer of 2022, and it seems that plenty of clubs are willing to pay more than that in order to prise him away from BVB this summer.

If Liverpool were able to win the race for Haaland this summer, there would be shades of the deal that saw them sign Fernando Torres from Atletico Madrid in 2007.

The Reds brought in the Spanish striker for a club-record fee, with him having been prolific with the Spanish side and attracted interest from across Europe as a result, with Sir Alex Fergurson claiming that he tried to sign him several times for Manchester United.

Therefore, it is already easy to see the similarities between the deal for Torres and any potential deal for Haaland, as Liverpool would no doubt have to smash the £75 million they paid for Virgil van Dijk if they want to bring in the £99 million-rated Norwegian this summer.

However, you can also see similarities in their style of play, as during his time at Liverpool, Torres was regarded as a lightning-quick forward, who was surprisingly strong and powerful in the air, whilst also being a devastating finisher at times.

Haaland has shown all of these qualities during his time at Dortmund, with the youngster scoring extremely highly when it comes to his finishing, whilst also having shown incredible speed despite his six foot four frame.

RB Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann was full of praise for the Dortmund striker recently, saying:

“Of course, he is an exceptional striker – this is why we wanted him, too. Dortmund got him.

“I think he just scored 25 goals in 25 Bundesliga games, something like that. This is truly extraordinary. Unbelievable stats.”

Therefore, since Liverpool are reportedly on the shortlist of clubs who can afford him, they should do everything they can to bring him to Anfield this summer, as it is clear he is destined to become one of the best footballers in the world.

Batshuayi and Townsend start, Schlupp dropped: Crystal Palace Predicted XI vs Leicester City

Crystal Palace return to Premier League action for the second time in three days when they take on Leicester City at Selhurst Park on Monday afternoon.

Fresh off the back of their disappointing defeat at Villa Park, the Eagles are getting ready to greet Brendan Rodgers’ side in their final game of the year.

Roy Hodgson has never been one to tinker with his side too much, but with games coming thick and fast over the next few weeks and months, he may have very little choice but to make a number of changes to keep some of his key players fully fit and fresh for the second half of the season.

Here is Football FanCast’s predicted starting XI, which sees Hodgson make three changes from their previous game against Aston Villa.

Vicente Guiata will keep the gloves with a back four of Scott Dann, Cheikhou Kouyate, Tyrick Mitchell and Joel Ward in front of him.

At centre-back, Kouyate is all but nailed on to start, while Gary Cahill’s recurring hamstring problem could pave the way for Dann to keep his place in the starting line-up for the foreseeable future.

Alongside them, Mitchell will be expected to fill in for Patrick van Aanholt, with the Dutchman due a break having started every game in the Premier League since he made a full recovery from a dislocated shoulder.

Moving further afield, there’s bound to be changes made to the midfield, with James McArthur expected to replace Jairo Riedewald after he was rested for the trip to Villa Park.

Similarly, Andros Townsend could come in for Jeffrey Schlupp, with Eberechi Eze lining up on the left wing.

Upfront, Zaha has been in sensational form since the start of the season and scored a crucial double against his former club Manchester United at Old Trafford, so is likely to start.

There may be some rotation at the top of the pitch after Christian Benteke drew a blank against Aston Villa which means Hodgson could hand Michy Batshuayi a surprise start for the first time since the 1-0 defeat to Burnley back in November.

AND in other news, Steve Parish must look to cash in on Crystal Palace defender James Tomkins in January…

Manchester United’s interest in Fiorentina defender Nikola Milenkovic spells trouble for Victor Lindelof

It seems Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to fix Manchester United’s defensive issues in the January transfer window…

What’s the word?

According to CalcioMercato, the Red Devils are among a host of clubs eyeing a move for Fiorentina versatile defender Nikola Milenkovic next month and the Serie A outfit are open to offloading him if they receive an offer in the region of €35m-40m (£35m).

It’s claimed they could become embroiled in a bidding war for the centre-half as he has also attracted interest from AC Milan, Inter and Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Milenkovic has established himself as one of the best defenders in Europe, providing two goals and one assist in Serie A this season so far, via WhoScored.

Bye-bye Victor Lindelof

With United linked with a move for the Serbia international, Victor Lindelof could find himself heading for the Old Trafford exit.

The Swede has become somewhat of a marmite figure amongst the fan base as he has suffered from an inconsistent run of form in recent years.

Harry Maguire is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-choice at the back but questions still remain over who should partner him in the heart of the defence.

Lindelof has assumed the role as part of Solskjaer’s preferred defensive pairing, having played 12  games in the Premier League so far this season, via Transfermarkt.

But that’s primarily due to a lack of other options rather than anything else as his performances at the back have been shaky at best to say the least.

Bringing in Milenkovic, who plays in a similar position, would undoubtedly push him one step closer to the exit.

Diehard United fans may be well acquainted with the Serbian after he kept Cristiano Ronaldo in his back pocket during the 3-0 victory over Juventus before the Christmas break. As per SofaScore, he blocked two shots, made two clearances and two interceptions to ensure Fiorentina kept their first clean sheet in Serie A since the draw with Parma at the Ennio Tardini Stadium.

Per WhoScored, he is averaging 1.6 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and 3.1 clearances per game in the Italian top flight so far this season, so perhaps he could fill the void United have arguably failed to fill ever since Rio Ferdinand left the club.

He has also been likened to club legend and his fellow countryman Nemanja Vidic, which is certainly high praise indeed, and suggests he is exactly the calibre of player United need to shore up their leaky defence, having conceded more goals than Premier League rivals Arsenal and Chelsea this season so far.

Berbatov sets uninspiring blueprint for Ancelotti’s Everton to beat Liverpool

Premier League icon Dimitar Berbatov has laid out an uninspiring set of blueprints for how Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton can end a decade of misery and beat Liverpool on Saturday.

The Toffees host their inner-city rivals at Goodison Park this weekend looking to claim a first win in precisely 10 years, and maintain their unbeaten start to the season that sees Everton top the league standings by three points.

Ancelotti’s men have mustered four wins from four in fine fashion having scored the joint-most goals (12), whilst also boasting the best disciplinary record with just two yellow cards to date, per WhoScored.

Saturday’s visitors have been marginally more shy in front of the net with 11 goals, but a humbling 7-2 loss to Aston Villa sees Jurgen Klopp’s side sit fifth in the table with the second-worst defensive record – only newly-promoted West Brom (13) have conceded more than Liverpool (11).

Berbatov expects the goals to continue hitting the Liverpool net this weekend having backed Everton to end their decade of misery with a 2-1 win, but how the former Manchester United striker – who scored a hat-trick against the Reds in 2010 – expects the Blues to achieve the result will leave Toffees supporters rather underwhelmed.

“It’s the biggest derby for years, I can’t wait for this game,” Berbatov told Metro.co.uk.

“Everton will be thinking of Leicester from a few years ago. The team, as I have said, are in love with Ancelotti, he has transformed them. Liverpool have their problems, and Everton will have seen the Villa game.

“Ancelotti will know how to exploit those weakness now, and I think Everton can surprise Liverpool on Saturday.”

Should Everton take inspiration from Leicester City’s 2015/16 Premier League-winning squad, Ancelotti will have one performance in mind over the other as Claudio Ranieri’s Foxes beat Liverpool 2-0 at home in their February encounter.

However, Leicester were far from the dominant force that day as it was the Reds who rather held the upper hand, even though Klopp’s side would depart the King Power Stadium pointless.

Altogether, Liverpool dominated proceedings with 63.9% of all possession, with which they fashioned 14 shots, completed 12 of 20 attempted dribbles and found teammates with 438 of their 566 attempted passes, per WhoScored.

Leicester, meanwhile, made good use of their 36.1% possession to conjure 13 efforts on goal, even though they found retaining the ball a challenging task with Liverpool recording 30 successful tackles, winning 37 defensive aerial duels and dispossessing Foxes players on 18 occasions.

What allowed Leicester to deny their guests that day was an inspired backs-to-the-wall approach, that saw Ranieri’s side block eight of Liverpool’s 14 shots and only allow one single effort force Kasper Schmeichel into action.

Four years on from that defeat, Liverpool continue to be a strong side in possession having averaged the second-best time on the ball (58.3%) thus far this season, with which they turn into the Premier League’s most shots (18.8) a game.

Thus, if Everton are to take any inspiration from Leicester’s title-winning side as Berbatov has proposed, Ancelotti must ensure it is in forcing Liverpool into chances that have a low goal-scoring probability – especially given how Jordan Pickford performed last time out against Brighton in yet another blunder-ridden display.

AND in other news, a Premier League rival has shown Everton a great deal of respect by blocking the Blues’ bid to land Carlo Ancelotti’s £10m target.

West Ham fans react to transfer interest in Juventus’ Daniele Rugani

With a move for Burnley’s James Tarkowski seemingly all but collapsed, it’s no surprise to see West Ham in the market for another central defender before the end of the transfer window early next month.

According to Sportitalia (via Football Italia), the Hammers are in talks to sign Juventus centre-back Daniele Rugani, and that whilst he has also been linked with a move to the likes of Fulham, Rennes and Sevilla, it’s David Moyes’ side who are in active negotiations for the Italy international.

Hilariously obscure Premier League players – Can you name them all?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The report adds that the Bianconeri are demanding a fee in the region of €18-20m (£16.4-18.2m), and that instead of agreeing to a loan move, they want to let him go permanently in order to help their finances.

And after hearing about the reports of a move for Rugani, West Ham fans took to Twitter to share their reactions.

A couple of Hammers fans meanwhile pointed to how Angelo Ogbonna followed a similar path from Juventus to West Ham, and has since “worked out pretty well”.

With 62 goals conceded last season in the Premier League (only the teams that finished below them let in more), a new centre-back at the London Stadium has to be a priority before the close of the window.

Moyes has got numerous players further forward who of course need to start clicking in front of goal, but without a more resilient back-line, it will be another tough season ahead for the Hammers.

A move for Rugani would be a step in the right direction.
