Northline Oval scrapped due to poor pitch

Darwin’s Northline Oval has been axed from the ongoing one-day quadrangular A-series due to a below-standard pitch. The venue hosted South Africa A’s ten-run win over the National Performance Squad on Sunday but its remaining two games will be shifted to Marrara Cricket Ground and The Gardens.”Unfortunately, the pitch at Northline Oval experienced some issues of variable bounce during Sunday’s match between the National Performance Squad and South Africa A,” Sean Cary, Cricket Australia’s senior manager of cricket operations, said.”Following an assessment of the pitch this morning we have taken the decision to relocate its remaining two matches in the series. The curators have done a very good job in the circumstances, but the pitch requires more work over the coming weeks to get to the standard required for international cricket.”Thursday’s match between Australia A and South Africa A has been moved to Marrara, while next Tuesday’s game between India A and the National Performance Squad has been shifted to The Gardens.

Fans' goodwill remains – Cook

Alastair Cook believes the English public remain largely behind the team despite the events of the winter and its dramatic fallout.

Alastair Cook believes the English public remain largely behind the team despite the events of the winter and its dramatic fallout. After a somewhat bitty start to the international season with a rain-effected game in Scotland then the T20 defeat to Sri Lanka on Tuesday, which Cook was not involved in, he now gets hold of the team for his first extended run since the one-day series in Australia, which resulted in a 4-1 defeat and, momentarily at least, led to Cook considering his future.Others did pay with their positions with Andy Flower and Kevin Pietersen the highest-profile casualties. Pietersen’s absence continues to be a source of much debate especially on social media, fuelled by Giles Clarke’s recent comments that people need to “move on” from the issue and not helped by England struggling to regain winning form. That Cook has retained his position, seemingly without too many questions asked, has also caused some consternation from his more vocal critics but Cook insists he has not personally felt any animosity from the fans.”I’m sure if you live your life on social media it would be slightly different but from the people I’ve bumped into in the street or the pub the goodwill is still there to English cricket,” he said. “That’s only what I’ve experienced and it is slightly different when you meet people face-to-face I’m sure.”People were obviously disappointed with the winter, as any cricket fan would be, and the players were disappointed as well, that’s a given. We are incredibly lucky with the support we’ve got, as we always have whether we’ve won or lost, and as players were are incredible grateful for the support we get.”But a continued struggle to string wins together this summer against Sri Lanka and India will start to test the patience of even the most loyal supporters.”No-one’s got a divine right to win a game of cricket,” Cook said. “Sri Lanka are an incredibly dangerous side so we’ve got to play some good aggressive cricket. We are going to leave it all out there and we are desperate for a good performance. But that doesn’t guarantee anything. The fresh start and stuff is brilliant but it’s all now down to playing some good cricket.”In this one-day series there is also a bigger picture to look at with the World Cup now less than nine months away. Cook took on the 50-over captaincy in 2011 following the previous tournament as England began another cycle of trying to overcome their woes in the premier global event, but Cook conceded that they are nowhere near as clear on their line-up as he had hoped they would be.”I remember in 2011 sitting down when I first started as England captain saying I want this four years to build up and come the World Cup we’ll have a settled side leading into it. I’d hoped to have eight or nine months where it would be settled. That was the theory but I probably wasn’t living in the world of reality if I’m being honest because a lot can happen in four years as we’ve seen.”Of course, it would be ideal if everything was settled and everyone knew their role. But we don’t know the 13 or 14 we’ll take out there. They’ll be the decisions we start making now because of what happened over the last three or four months. We build towards the World Cup from now.”One aspect of the team Cook did seem much more certain of was the continuation of his opening partnership with Ian Bell. There has been much clamour to shake up England’s top order, but the continued absence of Alex Hales showed that was not top of the selectors’ thoughts and it does not appear as Michael Carberry, who had a poor T20 yesterday, will split the incumbent pairing although he could yet bat at No. 3.There is logic in retaining the current partnership which is the second-highest scoring first-wicket combination for England: in 33 innings since they came together on a full-time basis in June 2012 they have averaged 42.28 and even in Australia were regularly forming a solid platform which gives Cook the confidence they can work in a variety of conditions.”If you look back to that Australia one-day series there were five very different wickets we had to play on,” Cook said. “So at Perth when it was a belter and we needed a quick start because we knew 300 would be a par score we got off to a really good start. So we have got the power to do that. But there’ll be other times in England or say Adelaide when you’re playing on a slow wicket and it nips around a bit. You need the guys to adapt their skills to handle those conditions. That’s what I’m looking for as a side.”Quite what England will do with the other end of the order was not quite so certain. James Anderson is back to take the new ball which will give the attack an added edge, and greater experience, but the major vulnerability remains at the death. Harry Gurney impressed in the T20 but, two matches into his international career, he will need someone to share the burden. If England continue to haemorrhage runs in the latter stages Cook will find it difficult to secure the wins to ensure the fans remain on side.

O Santos deve ir a campo com:Enzo Gil; Matheus Nunes, André Braga, Kaiky Melo e Pedro Scaramussa; Rafael Moreira, Kelvin Malthus e Gabriel Pirani; Fernandinho Paiva, Ivonei Júnior e David Apolinário.

St Lucia Zouks imploded in a chase of 176 to suffer an 83-run defeat against Barbados Tridents in St Lucia on Thursday.Chasing their second win in four games, St Lucia had a shaky start, losing opener Tamim Iqbal for 1 in the second over. Devon Smith and Andre Fletcher shared a 26-run partnership but their dismissals in the seventh over, to Barbados bowler Shannon Gabriel, left St Lucia struggling at 30 for 3. Herschelle Gibbs and Misbah-ul-Haq added 43 runs off 33 balls and looked set to pitch a rescue act for St Lucia before Rayad Emrit made a breakthrough in the 13th over. Looking to a turn a ball from Emrit to the on side, Gibbs walked across his stumps, only to miss the ball completely. That dismissal triggered a collapse, as St Lucia lost a wicket in every over thereafter to fold for 92. Pollard picked up two wickets, while Emrit finished with 3 for 19, accounting for Gibbs, Darren Sammy and Tino Best. Ashley Nurse, who had earlier dismissed Tamim, took the wickets of Shane Shillingford and Garey Mathurin in what was the last over to complete a comprehensive win.The Barbados innings of 175 was built around two partnerships, after Kieron Pollard chose to bat. Dwayne Smith and Shoaib Malik added 63 runs for the second wicket after Barbados lost opener Jonathan Carter for 4. Their partnership, which lasted a little over eight overs, took Barbados to a comfortable 83 for 1 in the 12th over, before Albie Morkel bowled Smith for 48. Umar Akmal and Shoaib Malik were dismissed in successive overs, with Best, who was suffering a slight niggle, coming on late in the innings to account for Malik. Kris Mayers and Pollard, however, blitzed a 57-run partnership in 22 balls to take the total past 150. Pollard dominated the stand, smashing 34 off 21, including one four and three sixes. Nurse hit a six off the last ball to take Barbados to 175 for 6.Having lost their second successive match in a row, St Lucia are now languishing at fifth place on the points table and may have to play without Best in their next game against Jamaica. After the match, Sammy said pacer Nelon Pascal would replace Best if the latter wasn’t fit for the next match. Barbados lead the table with four wins in four games.

Pakistan focus on fitness in Abbottabad camp

Pakistan’s cricketers focused primarily on fitness and batting skills during the six-day training camp in Abbottabad, which concluded on Wednesday, ahead of the Champions Trophy in England. The players returned to their hometowns and will reassemble on Monday in Lahore before departing for Scotland. The weather in Abbottabad, at an altitude of 1260m, remained pleasant throughout the camp and the players took part in some practice matches. Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq said the players had ample time to gel.”The purpose of coming here was that the team should train without any distractions,” Misbah said. “It’s a bit cooler here and the pitches had offered some movement for the batsmen to cope with.”Misbah also said the players needed to pay more attention to fitness. “We are seeking improvement in fitness, at least close to the requirements of international cricket. We are not there yet but we are trying to hit the benchmark.”During the camp, you must have seen that fielding is directly associated with your level of fitness and we are working on both,” Misbah said. “We understand that if your fitness and fielding does not improve you will suffer in international cricket, especially in T20 and one-day cricket.”Misbah said the team’s defeats in South Africa had made his players mentally stronger. “In South Africa we played some tough cricket in tough conditions and the boys will benefit from it mentally. You get ready to face difficulties and I think our performance will be good in the Champions Trophy.”Opening batsman and T20 captain Mohammad Hafeez had rigorous net sessions, mainly working on his technique against seam bowling. Hafeez had a poor tour of South Africa, where he scored only 43 runs in the Tests and 118 in the ODIs, and was dismissed by Dale Styen on six occasions.Pakistan’s coach Dav Whatmore said it was more of a skills camp. “Obviously this is not the northern hemisphere, but it’s a destination where we can achieve a few things,” he said. “This is not a conditioning camp, this is skills camp because we are close to the competition. We are pretty happy with what we got, we had some bad (rainy) weather on Sunday but we managed to get 70 overs for ample match practice.”Pakistan had lost the Test series in South Africa 3-0 but fared better in the one-dayers, losing 3-2. “In the last series we were one game from winning the series,” Whatmore said. “We are okay, we just needed to improve on a couple of areas and we would have been a series winner.”Chances in the Champions Trophy is difficult to predict accurately, but I tell you what this team has got the ability. If we play to our potential we can put pressure on any team. Our goal is obviously to win it.”Pakistan will play two ODIs each against Scotland and Ireland later this month before taking on West Indies, South Africa and India in its Champions Trophy Group B matches.

USA batsman Steven Taylor became the first American cricketer to score a century in Twenty20 cricket during a match against Bermuda in the 2013 ICC World Cricket League Americas Division One Twenty20 tournament in Fort Lauderdale. The 19-year-old from Miramar, Florida scored 101 off 62 balls, bringing up his landmark in 61 balls, as USA beat Bermuda by 48 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis method.Taylor was on 78 with three overs to go in the innings before a string of sixes in the next two overs, including a couple in the 19th over off Rodney Trott, took him to triple digits. He brought up his hundred with his sixth six and his innings also included five fours. Earlier in the tournament, Taylor fell for 95 against Cayman Islands, trying to hit a six to get to his hundred.Last October, Taylor was the only American player in the International World XI that played two T20 exhibition matches in Pakistan to help foster the return of international cricket to the country. He was named his side’s player of the series after taking four wickets in the two games.Taylor also holds the American record for the highest score at the Under-19 level for his innings of 140 off 120 balls against Papua New Guinea in a 2011 ICC Under-19 World Cup qualifier.USA are unbeaten in seven matches of the ICC Americas tournament and have secured a spot at the 2013 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier. They finished in 12th place with a 3-6 record at the Twenty20 Qualifier in 2012 but notched a big upset with a seven-wicket win over Scotland in the group stage, in which Taylor scored an important 40 runs.
