Scorecard
Rain ended any hope of a result at Blacktown Oval in Sydney, where only ten overs were bowled on the final day between New South Wales and Western Australia. The Blues finished the third day needing two wickets to end the Warriors’ second innings and set up a potentially small chase, but their hopes were thwarted by the weather and they had to settle for first-innings points. When play finally began, Western Australia added only eight runs to their overnight total and finished on 8 for 219 when the match was called off, with debutant Ashton Agar unbeaten on 34 and Jason Behrendorff on 7. Steve O’Keefe ended up with 4 for 47 in the second innings and match figures of 8 for 102, a career-best analysis.

Essex bid for Olympic Stadium

Essex have applied for the right to become tenants of the Olympic Stadium after London 2012. The club, based in Chelmsford, have made a joint bid with the University of East London to use what will become a 60,000 seater venue after the games. While the club would rarely utilise the venue for first-class games – it is most unlikely a division two championship clash with Derbyshire would attract 60,000 – Essex do have an excellent record of generating T20 audiences and regularly sell-out their Chelmsford ground, which has a capacity of 6,500. The Olympic Stadium’s situation in heavily populated east London therefore makes it an attractive proposition.A statement from Essex read: “We can confirm that the University of East London and Essex County Cricket Club have jointly put in a bid to the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) to utilise space in the Olympic Stadium.”We cannot provide any further detail at this stage, as we are bound by a legal confidentiality agreement. We see this as a fantastic opportunity and are committed to supporting the achievement of the best possible outcomes from the legacy operation of the Olympic Stadium.”Essex have confirmed, however, that they have no intentions of moving from their home at the Ford County Ground in Chelmsford.”It is very important we make it clear to people that we have no intention of moving from Chelmsford,” Essex’s chief executive, David East told ESPNcricinfo. “This is our home and we are actively pursuing the redevelopment of the ground.”We also have a responsibility to develop the game in east London. We look after five boroughs – including Newham, the location of the stadium – and we have coaching and scouting programmes in place there already. Strategically this would be a very good move for us.”West Ham United were awarded the stadium in a partnership with Newham Council in October, but the deal collapsed after complaints from rival football clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Leyton Orient. As a result, OPLC decided the venue would remain in public ownership and retain its athletic capabilities. They subsequently opened a new bidding process to find a tenant – or tenants – which closed on March 23. It is understood that there were four bids.West Ham, should they win the bid, are not thought to be hostile to any application from Essex to use the stadium for a limited number of cricket fixtures.

ECB to accept Morgan's county review

England’s first-class counties will play just 14 Championship games per season as the ECB board looks set to ratify the vast majority of the Morgan Review at Lord’s on Thursday

England’s first-class counties will play just 14 Championship games per season as the ECB Management Board looks set to ratify the vast majority of the Morgan Review at Lord’s on Thursday.Barring a major u-turn from the ECB, the changes will be implemented ahead of the 2014 season. Other features will include a return to 50-over List A cricket, a minimum 14 Twenty20 games per county and a cut in the level of the salary cap. While few counties are happy with the results, most seem willing to accept them. David Morgan, the former ICC and ECB chairman, consulted widely throughout 2011 and county officials have accepted, after years of prevarication, that the ECB needed to show leadership. Whether spectators, who have had little chance to put forward their views, accept the report so readily remains to be seen. The biggest winners of the Morgan Review are Team England. They were keen that the quantity of domestic cricket be reduced and keen that domestic limited-overs cricket should mirror the international game. It will be an irony lost on few that the Morgan was initially appointed in May to lead a review into “the business of county cricket.”Though Morgan presented his interim report in November to the widespread approval of the board, his full report will not be submitted until Thursday. After ratification, an almost inevitable event, the county chief executives will be invited for a meeting at Lord’s on January 23 to discuss the report’s implications. David Morgan will not be present, although he may join the meeting by video conference. As Dave Brooks, the chief executive of Sussex put it: “There will be no more consultation about the domestic structure.”Fundamental to the changes is the scheduling of the Champions League. The tournament, which has been allocated its own space in the ICC’s Future Tours Program, will, in most seasons, be staged from mid-September. That has created fixture congestion in the English domestic season and seen the season end almost two weeks earlier than previously.

Swann's six completes India's humiliation

England, led by Graeme Swann’s six wickets, secured a famous whitewash on a dramatic final day at The Oval as India collapsed during the afternoon session

Graeme Swann’s six wickets led England’s charge to a famous whitewash on a dramatic final day at The Oval as India collapsed during the afternoon session, which included Sachin Tendulkar falling for 91. An increasingly agitated home side had been frustrated as Tendulkar and Amit Mishra added 144 for the fourth wicket, but once Swann made the breakthrough the rest of India’s resistance crumbled. The innings folded in 15 overs with England winning by an innings and eight runs.Swann’s success made it the complete series for England, where everyone played a key role in either setting up, positioning or securing a victory. This was a display of attacking offspin of the highest quality, although the wide smile he wore when he savoured his fifth wicket, as Gautam Gambhir sliced to backward point, and his sixth to complete victory, hadn’t been so evident during the earlier part of the day. All the frustration, though, vanished in a clatter of wickets.By batting through the morning without further loss, India had managed their first wicketless session of the series, increasing the prospects of a draw that would have salvaged a modicum of pride. However, that was being overshadowed by the progress of Tendulkar towards the century that would have completed his 100th international hundred – the landmark that has stalked him throughout the series. It continued to prove elusive.Smart stats

England won by a 4-0 or greater margin for only the seventh time in their Test history.

For India, it’s their sixth series defeat by such a margin – their previous one was in Australia in 1991-92.

It’s India’s 11th innings defeat against England, and the third time they’ve lost at least two Tests against them in a series by an innings.

England averaged 59.76 runs per wicket, and lost 47 wickets in the series; India averaged 25.55, and lost 80.

Graeme Swann’s 6 for 106 is his first five-for against India, and the 11th in his career. He also went past 150 Test wickets, and is fourth among England spinners, after Derek Underwood, Jim Laker and Tony Lock.

Sachin Tendulkar’s 91 is his ninth score in the nineties in Tests, pushing him level with Michael Slater. Only Rahul Dravid and Steve Waugh, with ten, have more nineties.

Tim Bresnan, with his first ball of new spell, swung one back into Tendulkar, who was hit on the pad, and Rod Tucker raised his finger. Replays showed it was clipping leg stump. It hadn’t been a classic Tendulkar innings by any means, but the fact he’d had at least three lives raised the belief that it was to be his day.The previous evening, England had failed to appeal for a stumping when Tendulkar momentarily lifted his foot, and two further opportunities were missed on the final day. Alastair Cook dropped a relatively straightforward chance at short leg when Tendulkar had 70, and Matt Prior shelled a thick edge with him on 85. During a wonderful contest with Swann, there was also an lbw appeal from a missed sweep that, had there been the DRS and England had reviewed, would have been overturned. The look on Tendulkar’s face when he was finally given suggested he too would have reviewed given the chance, but it wouldn’t have mattered. To highlight that Tendulkar’s innings wasn’t fluent, it was Mishra who dominated the partnership and caused England, possibly, the greater headache. His second Test fifty had come from 103 balls, and he used his feet against Swann, while playing leg-side shots off the quicks that wouldn’t have looked out of place coming off Tendulkar’s bat.For all his failings with the ball, Mishra showed tremendous application with the bat that has been missing from some of his team-mates. For a while it appeared he may even beat his partner to three figures but Swann’s persistence paid off when a delivery scooted past the edge. Mishra’s presence, and the missed chances off Tendulkar, had certainly got England hot under the collar and Andrew Strauss was given an official warning for his players walking across the pitch.England’s on-field temper can still boil over, but it showed the hunger to win. The final two days of this match were of terrific value to them, even if the foot-sore bowlers might not agree, because Test victories shouldn’t come easily. To be made to work, as they were yesterday by Rahul Dravid and today by Tendulkar and Mishra, and to come through with victory, will stand them in good stead.England know how to sense an opening and continued to surge through line-up. Suresh Raina completed a horror match as he was given lbw to complete a pair, which used up 42 deliveries, although it was a poor decision from Simon Taufel. There was an inside edge before pad and the ball was also heading over the stumps. The new ball was taken straight away – Swann had said he preferred a harder ball on this surface as well – and the hosts’ Man-of-the-Series Stuart Broad, who was the pick of England’s quicks on the final day, made swift inroads. MS Dhoni flashed an edge to second slip and three balls later RP Singh edged behind. The only question now was whether India would at least make England bat again.Even that proved too much as Swann wrapped up the innings against batsmen who had decided to have a swing. Sreesanth was the last to fall, heaving an inside edge on to the stumps to send England into another round of celebrations. It was a familiar scene in this series, a run of performances that will go down in the game’s history as one of the most dominant displays. England have set a benchmark for this generation of Test cricket and now others need to follow suit.

Rain wins after Napier hat-trick

Graham Napier celebrated a dramatic hat-trick but Essex Eagles’ day-night Clydesdale Bank 40 clash against Glamorgan Dragons fell victim to the weather

06-May-2011
ScorecardGraham Napier celebrated a dramatic hat-trick but Essex Eagles’ day-night Clydesdale Bank 40 clash against Glamorgan Dragons fell victim to the weather.Glamorgan scored 222 for 7 after being sent in to bat at the Swalec Stadium, only for rain to then set in and force the match to be abandoned. It meant that Alastair Cook failed to get a bat for the first time since being named England one-day captain.Glamorgan were indebted to captain and opener Alviro Petersen, who made 88 from 104 balls, until he was out in the penultimate over. Petersen and Gareth Rees had given Glamorgan a useful start, putting on 116 for the first wicket in 22.1 overs until Napier struck with his hat-trick.It was the first hat-trick in the competition against the Dragons since Kevin Evans achieved the feat for Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in 1994 and Rees was first to fall. The left-hander, who scored 51 from 70 balls, edged an attempted expansive drive behind before Napier had both James Allenby and Stewart Walters leg-before with inswinging yorkers that struck them on the boot. The home side suddenly found themselves 116 for 3.There was more problems for Glamorgan when Cook ran out Ben Wright, following a mix-up that Petersen could take the blame for, as they attempted a second run in the 26th over. The score became 148 for 5 soon after when wicketkeeper Mark Wallace was run out after racing down the wicket for a run that was not there. But Petersen shared in a useful partnership of 43 in 6.1 overs with Graham Wagg, and there was an unbeaten 19 from James Harris at the end as 18 runs came off the final over, but not before Petersen was caught at short fine-leg.Rain arrived in the interval and it left the umpires Peter Willey and Jeff Evans with no choice but to abandon play at 9pm.

Bengal demolish Tamil Nadu

In what turned out to be a low-scoring semi-final round, Tamil Nadu imploded for 59 to hand Bengal a 55-run win at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.Chosing to bat, Bengal began poorly, being reduced to 8 for 2 in the fifth over. Coming in at No.4, captain Manoj Tiwary counterattacked, stroking five massive sixes in an innings of 69 off 44 balls. He did not find a reliable partner though, as wickets continued to tumble at the other end. The second highest contribution of the innings came from wicketkeeper, Wriddhiman Saha, with 19. Lakshmipathy Balaji was the pick of the Tamil Nadu bowlers, picking up two wickets at 4.50 runs an over.Chasing a target that required them to score at less than a run a ball, Tamil Nadu fell behind right away. Ashok Dinda was on a hat-trick in the first over of the innings, after bowling Anirudha Srikkanth and getting Ganapathi Vignesh to edge to the keeper for a golden duck. Tamil Nadu never recovered, losing three wickets with the score on 11, to be reduced to 11 for 6 in the seventh over. The only sizable contribution came from Arun Karthik, who was unbeaten on 35 off 26 balls when the innings folded on 59. Medium-pacer Sayan Mondal wrecked the middle order with four wickets and a run out.Bengal will meet Madhya Pradesh in the final at the same venue on March 16.Madhya Pradesh set up the final clash with Bengal, defeating Haryana by two wickets with one ball to spare in a thrilling second match of the day at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.Being asked to bowl, Madhya Pradesh knocked over the top half of the Haryana line-up in a hurry, to leave them 23 for 5 in the seventh over. Cameos from Nitin Saini, Joginder Sharma and Amit Mishra made sure Haryana played out their 20 overs though, finishing with 115 for 9. Madhya Pradesh’s pace trio of TP Sudhindra, Anand Rajan and Amarjeet Singh shared the wickets around.Madhya Pradesh’s reply was built around a 47-run fourth-wicket partnership between Udit Birla and Harpreet Singh, after Sharma and Kuldeep Hooda made early inroads. There was no much resistance otherwise, but Madhya Pradesh did just enough to edge out Haryana in a nail-biting last over that included Birla’s wicket, a run-out and a first-ball boundary from No. 10 batsman Sudhindra to seal the victory.
