West Ham fans slam Diop vs Spurs

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans weren’t impressed with the defensive display of centre-half Issa Diop during their crunch London derby clash with Tottenham Hotspur this evening.

Aiming to keep their hopes of clinching the Carabao Cup alive after knocking out both Man United and Man City, David Moyes’ men travelled across the capital to Tottenham for their second meeting against the Lilywhites so far this season.

A hotly contested clash saw goals at both ends with both Moyes and new opposition boss Antonio Conte aiming to clinch silverware with their respective sides.

Tottenham took the lead twice in the first half through Steven Bergwijn and Lucas Moura with the Hammers briefly equalising in-between thanks to a very well taken individual goal by Jarrod Bowen.

Failing to find a breakthrough, West Ham eventually crashed out of the competition to their rivals.

West Ham fans slam Diop…

Amid an entertaining Quarter-Final tie, many West Ham fans saw fit to criticise the performance of Diop for his display – particularly for playing a big role in the conceded goals.

The Frenchman lunged for an interception in the build up to Spurs’ first, arguably leaving space for Bergwijn to tap home (Dan Silver), while he also failed to block the cross for Tottenham’s second goal through Lucas (Spurs Web).

He arguably wasn’t helped much by left-back Arthur Masuaku with many supporters believing their left-side was particularly exposed, taking aim at Diop and his fellow defender.

As per SofaScore, he also finished the night among West Ham’s lowest-rated players – leaving little wonder why West Ham fans weren’t impressed after a shaky evening.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Selhurst Park protest

A section of Crystal Palace fans protested at Selhurst Park in the 3-1 win over Everton on Sunday, Matt Woosnam reports.

The Holmesdale Fanatics held up a banner after the club announced a partnership with cryptocurrency brand Socios, with a number of Palace fans giving their thoughts to the protest on social media.

Palace shared details last week on plans to launch a $CPFC Fan Token through Socios, which gives fans the chance to get involved in Eagles-related polls, games, competitions and quizzes.

All existing Palace season ticket holders and members will soon have the opportunity to redeem a $CPFC Fan Token for free, however, those not eligible will need to pay £2 a token.

Palace reporter Woosnam shared an image of The Holmesdale Fanatics and their banner regarding Socios on Twitter.

This is what these Eagles supporters had to say in reply, with many backing the protest, presumably due to Palace partnering with a cryptocurrency brand, which is by its very definition decentralised finance, and therefore non-regulated and very risky.

Goa earn first-innings points

A round-up of the third day’s action of the first round of matches in the 2009-10 Ranji Trophy Plate League

Cricinfo staff05-Nov-2009Group B
Scorecard
It was a soporific day’s play in Kannur, with Kerala scoring only 198 runs for the loss of six wickets on the third day, in reply to Andhra’s 442. The openers added 38 and they were separated only in the 23rd over when Sambasiva Sarma was out for 16 off 67 balls. The debutant Sachin Baby plodded to 32 off 91 before he was run out and the other opener, VA Jagadeesh consumed 165 balls for 65. PR Prem scored 50 off 102 balls, a terrific strike-rate compared to that of his peers, and he added 73 runs with Vinan Nair. Nair was dismissed for 44 shortly before stumps. Andhra will begin the final day needing only four wickets to take first-innings points, and have a lead of 234 at the moment.
Scorecard
Jalaj Saxena scored 142 and Hrishikesh Kanitkar made 72 but their efforts were not enough to take Madhya Pradesh even close to Haryana’s mammoth first-innings total of 546. Resuming on 116 for 1, MP ended the third day on 364 for 7, trailing by 182 runs. Kanitkar and Saxena added 162 for the second wicket, and Saxena and Devendra Bundela had another stand 73 for the third. MP had reached 301 for 3 before they collapsed, losing four wickets for 18 runs. Sanjay Budhwar and Sachin Rana took three wickets apiece for Haryana.Group A
Scorecard
Nishit Shetty scored his seventh first-class hundred to give Tripura a chance of earning first-innings points against Jharkhand in Ranchi. Shetty’s 104, along with solid contributions from the lower-middle order, led Tripura to 352 for 6 after resuming on the third day on 116 for 3. The wicketkeeper Rajib Dutta remained unbeaten on 60, along with Debabrata Chowdhury on 34, and Tripura trail by only 79 in the first innings. A lot will depend on this pair, though, for an early wicket on the last day will expose the tail. Rahul Shukla and Shahbaz Nadeem took 2 for 63 each for Jharkhand.
Scorecard
Vineet Saxena scored a patient century but Abu Nechim took a five-for and Arlen Konwar scalped 4 for 72 to dismiss Rajasthan for 256 in their second innings in Guwahati. Assam, however, will need to score a challenging 296 – the highest total of the match – to score a victory in their Ranji Trophy opener. Saxena made an unbeaten 103 off 293 balls but had little support from the others and Rajasthan collapsed from 167 for 3, losing seven wickets for 89 runs. Nechim bowled an exceptional spell, taking 5 for 57 from 31.2 overs.
Scorecard
Amit Paunikar, Shalabh Shrivastava and Ranjit Paradkar weighed in with half-centuries but a lower-order collapse forced Vidarbha to concede a 180-run first-innings lead to Goa in Nagpur. Vidarbha began the third day on 113 for 2, chasing Goa’s 474, with Paunikar unbeaten on 47 and Shrivastava on 31. They extended their partnership to 143 before Shrivastava was lbw for 78. Paunikar failed to reach his 100, falling lbw to Sridharan Sriram on 98. Paradkar rallied in the middle order, scoring 72, but the rest of the batting crumbled. Vidarbha lost their sixth and seventh wickets with the score on 282 and their last three in the space of four runs to be dismissed for 338. Goa ended the day on 44 for 1, having lost Sagun Kamat for 25.

'Sacking Ponting would be completely unfair' – Sutherland

Cricket Australia’s chief executive has said sacking Ricky Ponting from the captaincy would be “completely unfair” and has praised his leadership through the Ashes

Cricinfo staff24-Aug-2009

James Sutherland, Cricket Australia’s chief executive, has said sacking Ricky Ponting from the captaincy would be “completely unfair” and has praised his leadership through the Ashes. Australia lost The Oval Test by 197 runs and conceded their second Ashes defeat to England this decade.”Ricky’s had a very, very good series,” Sutherland told reporters. “He’s been under incredible pressure. I thought the dignity and poise that he showed in defeat was something that all Australians should be very proud of.”He also absolved the National Selection Panel (NSP) of responsibility for the defeat in England. One of the talking points in the post-mortem was the omission of the offspinner Nathan Hauritz, which captain Ricky Ponting and coach Tim Nielsen admitted was a blunder. Hauritz’s counterpart Graeme Swann proved why a spinner was so essential on that pitch as he picked up eight wickets. Sutherland defended the team management for the final line-up, implying that not all gambles are likely to pay-off.”I think everyone will be looking for people to blame. I don’t think that in any way we can hold the selectors accountable for us losing the Ashes,” Sutherland said. “At the end of the day, the players go out and do the business on the field.”Only six or seven months ago we had a fantastic series in South Africa where we beat the No. 1 team in the world (2-1 in the Tests) with a pretty similar line-up. The selectors were hailed for their selection, I guess in some ways the perceived risks they took in backing young talent. I think it would be jumping to conclusions to be blaming the selectors for this.”Sutherland said it would be unfair to criticise the decision to play a four-pronged pace attack at the expense of Hauritz, while it was clear that Australia effectively lost the game when they conceded a huge first-innings lead of 172.”That’s something that the selectors can explain for themselves,” Sutherland said. “Whether that had any bearing on the result of the game, who will know? We’ve lost the game by 200 runs, it’s a pretty significant defeat, and having a spinner in the side wouldn’t have helped us in the first innings, where we were bowled out for 160 and effectively lost the game.”With Australia free-falling to No. 4 in the latest ICC Test rankings, Sutherland admitted that plenty of work had to be done to reinstate their position at the top.”I don’t think Cricket Australia is under any illusions as to where this team is at. We’re definitely in a re-building phase after losing some of the best players to ever play cricket for Australia, and right now, what you get with a young and relatively inexperienced team is some ebbs and flows in performance.”We saw a little bit of that in the Ashes series. Our best cricket was very, very good, and our not-so-good cricket, in a couple of critical moments, were really the reasons why we let the Ashes slip.”Commenting on likely changes to the selection panel, Sutherland said at least one position in the three-man panel, led by Andrew Hilditch, will be converted to a full-time role.”The selection panel is to some extent, professional already. We have in recent times had a review, where we are now moving to a phase of becoming more professional in our approach to selection. It’s not just selection, it’s a matter of identifying talent and being partners in the development of talent and I think that’s part of the review and going forward we’ll be moving towards having at least one of the selection panel full time.”However, he ruled out the possibility of appointing the captain and coach to the panel, on the lines of what New Zealand Cricket adopted on Sunday. “The captain and the coach are always heavily consulted before matches but the structure that we prefer is for the selectors to be independent and making their own decisions and to be accountable for selection on that basis.”

A única dúvida é no ataque.

Worcestershire approach Hoggard

Worcestershire have made a formal request to speak to Matthew Hoggard, the former England fast bowler whose contract with Yorkshire expires at the end of the season

Cricinfo staff24-Jun-2009Worcestershire have made a formal request to speak to Matthew Hoggard, the former England fast bowler, whose contract with Yorkshire expires at the end of the season.Earlier this month, Hoggard hinted that his future may not be with Yorkshire, the club where he has spent his entire career. Reported to be angry at not featuring in the side’s one-day team this year, Hoggard said: “I like to be in charge of my future rather than the other way round. Obviously, cricket is my job and you’ve got to go where the work is, and if I’m not getting any work up here, so to speak, then it’s possible I might have to go and look for it elsewhere.”Worcestershire cannot speak to Hoggard until a 28-day interim period has elapsed after his contract expires, but they are reportedly keen to secure an experienced fast bowler owing to Simon Jones’ unfortunate and persistent injuries, which continue to blight his career.Hoggard, 32, was dropped by England after the Hamilton Test against New Zealand in March, 2008, and has not featured since. He is Yorkshire’s leading wicket-taker in the Championship, with 15 wickets at 31.13 this season.

Why do rows erupt when Australia play Asia, asks Younis

Younis Khan feels controversies arise when Australia play either India or Pakistan•AFP

Following on the controversy created by offspinner Saeed Ajmal saying Shane Watson tipped off the umpires about his bowling action, Pakistan captain Younis Khan has asked why such controversies occurred when Australia were playing teams from the subcontinent.Ajmal was reported for a suspect bowling action when delivering the doosra after the second ODI against Australia in Dubai. The offspinner, however, believed that Shane Watson might have played a role in drawing attention to the bowling action by speaking to umpires Asad Rauf and Billy Bowden during the second one-day international at the Dubai Sports City Stadium.”This is always happening with India and Pakistan and Australia,” Younis told AAP. “Why do we create all the time controversies? Why? It’s a fair game, you know. You’re talking about the doosra, ‘Why he bowl doosra?'”Why [shouldn’t] he [Ajmal] bowl the doosra? Because this is an art and especially Pakistanis and Indians, they have the art, so why [should it] not be allowed?” Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar was reported for a suspect action in Perth in 1999 while Muttiah Muralitharan was called for chucking on two separate tours of Australia.Australia captain Michael Clarke, however, played down the issue and said Watson did not speak to the umpires about Ajmal’s action. “Watto certainly didn’t go to the umpires and say a word, none of our players have approached the umpires and spoken about it,” Clarke said. “For us I think the way this tournament has been played, the spirit of the game has been fantastic. Both teams have got on really well, it’s been hard-fought cricket, it’s been so competitive, it’s been such a good tour so far.”Pakistan played Ajmal in the third ODI, which they lost by 27 runs to concede a 2-1 lead, and he continued to bowl the doosra. Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam said Ajmal would continue to do so until he was tested by the ICC’s experts.

Liverpool: Minamino must start vs Preston

After humiliating Manchester United 5-0 in their latest Premier League match, Liverpool now have a different challenge on their hands in their next game with a clash against Championship club Preston North End at Deepdale in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening.

On the chalkboard

One player that wasn’t involved in the victory at Old Trafford that we think should be in the starting XI in midweek is 26-year-old winger Takumi Minamino.

Minamino has only made two appearances for Liverpool across all competitions so far this season, one of which came during the Merseyside club’s previous Carabao Cup match which saw them beat fellow Premier League side Norwich City 3-0, with Minamino scoring two of them.

Taking this into account, we feel that Minamino would be a good option to start against Preston given the fact he hasn’t played that much but has shown he is capable of putting in a decent shift when given the chance as he did against Norwich.

In that match against the Canaries, in addition to scoring two goals, Minamino managed to earn himself an overall match rating of 8/10 from the Liverpool Echo who said that he was “always a danger” in the match, showing how useful he can be when called upon even though he hasn’t played regularly so far this season and how he could destroy Preston with his attacking talent on the pitch.

Liverpool signed Minamino, who has been described as “outstanding” by Jurgen Klopp in the past, back in December 2019 from Austrian club RB Salzburg after they triggered his £7.25m release clause.

Since joining the Merseyside club, the 26-year-old, who is currently valued at £10.8m according to Transfermarkt, has made just 33 appearances for the Reds across all competitions, scoring six goals and providing two assists in the process.

Back in February, Minamino joined fellow Premier League side Southampton on a loan deal where he managed to net two goals in ten matches before returning to Merseyside.

Looking ahead to the Preston clash, we feel that this game could be another good opportunity for the £72k-per-week earner to show what he is capable of and why he deserves to be in the Liverpool squad rather than away on another loan deal.

Richardson's five boosts Australia

A low-scoring opening day at the WACA ended with Australia Under-19 inching towards a lead over India Under-19 thanks to a fine display in the field

A low-scoring opening day at the WACA ended with Australia Under-19 inching towards a lead over India Under-19 thanks to a fine display in the field. Right-arm fast bowler Kane Richardson’s five wickets bundled India out for 165 in 44.2 overs before the hosts finished the day five down for 136.India captain Ashok Meenaria’s decision to bat didn’t come off well, and he soon found himself battling for survival as wickets fell around him. Richardson took two wickets inside five overs and his fellow new-ball operator Jackson Coleman, on debut, also added to India’s early wobble. Meenaria added 56 with Harpreet Singh (24) but his dismissal for 51 was followed by a collapse of three wickets for no runs as Richardson returned to rock the lower middle order. A brisk 32 from Harshal Patel got the total beyond 150, barely.Australia were given a 61-run opening stand but suffered a collapse themselves. The offspinner Kundan Singh, 16, took three wickets to give India some hope before stumps were drawn. Tim Beaton, who took a fancy for the Indian attack in the first game in Hobart, contributed a solid 71 from 96 balls to lift Australia.
