Liverpool: Fans get excited as Kylian Mbappe price tag could drop

Global talent and Liverpool target Kylian Mbappe could have his price tag lowered by Paris Saint-Germain if he doesn’t pen a new deal with the club.

The highly sought-after young talent will have just one year left on his current contract once this season is over. According to L’Equipe (relayed via @AnfieldEdition), the Ligue 1 champions may be willing to slash his transfer fee to £91m.

The Reds have been loosely linked with Mbappe over the course of the last 12 months, but recently talks seemed to have reignited. Recent reports claimed that Liverpool and Real Madrid had both entered talks with the World Cup winner over a potential move.

Mbappe’s current Transfermarkt value is a whopping £162m, which makes him the most expensive player on the database. Signing him for £91m will be a huge discount on what he is really worth.

Many Liverpool fans love the idea of making a move for him and are hoping that Michael Edwards can work his magic on a deal.

One supporter has tweeted ‘please I beg’, whilst another thinks that ‘we could get him’ next year.

Spurs fans loving interest in Sevilla defender Diego Carlos

With the joint-worst defensive record in the Premier League’s top-ten, it’s no surprise to see Tottenham being linked with a whole host of centre-backs ahead of the summer transfer window.

The futures of the likes of Jan Vertonghen and Juan Foyth are also very much up in the air, so a new central defender is likely to be even more of a major priority for Jose Mourinho’s side.

And according to The Daily Telegraph, the Lilywhites are looking at Sevilla powerhouse Diego Carlos.

The report claims that whilst Spurs are involved in the race to sign Beijing Guoan defender Kim Min-jae, Carlos is another viable alternative for them. However, the one main sticking point behind doing a deal for the Brazilian, is his asking price, with Sevilla reportedly wanting in excess of £35m to part ways with the 6 foot ace.

After hearing about their links to Carlos, Spurs fans flooded to Twitter to share their reactions.

A few fans insisted that Daniel Levy simply wouldn’t be willing to shell out to sign someone like Carlos, and with that reported £35m asking price, it’s clear to see why.

Another Spurs fan in particular questioned why the club just didn’t go for a more proven and elite option like Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly.

Part of a Sevilla side currently lying in fourth place in La Liga and well in the fight for Champions League football next season, Carlos has been one of the standout performers.

The 27-year-old has featured in all but two of Sevilla’s league games this season, and boasts some pretty impressive defensive and passing stats when compared to someone like Toby Alderweireld.

As per Sofascore, he wins more total duels (4.1), averages a better passing accuracy (84%), and has committed no errors that have either led to a shot or goal this season, unlike Alderweireld who has made two.

Spurs have got plenty of options to decide over, but Carlos is playing in a side competing with the big boys in Spain, and seems to be more than holding his own.

Glasgow Rangers: Jim White quashes Steven Gerrard exit rumours

TalkSPORT’s Jim White has said there is no chance of Steven Gerrard leaving his job as Glasgow Rangers manager despite interest from Bristol City.

The Championship club were said to be interested in the Ibrox outfit’s boss as they look to fill their own vacancy. Gerrard has been north of the border for the past two years, and is yet to win a trophy – at some point, he is likely to return to England anyway.

White, though, believes that he has no interest in leaving his current job. He said (via Bristol Live):

“It is our understanding that Steven Gerrard will be staying with Rangers as he has absolutely no interest in being anywhere else other than at Rangers.

“So Rangers fans will be breathing a sigh of relief because they want Gerrard at the helm as they go all-out next season to stop Celtic winning 10-in-a-row.”

This does not come as too much of a surprise – Gerrard has unfinished business to contend with at Ibrox. It would be a real shame if he were to depart the club at this point after failing what he initially set out to achieve, which was to win something in Scotland.

As said previously, he is likely to return to his homeland in the future, but it is far too soon for that, and he would likely want a more prestigious job than the one reportedly on offer here.

Spurs fans react to major update on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

After a sobering 3-1 defeat away to Sheffield United in the Premier League, Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho delivered a reality check for the north Londoners.

Speaking after the game, the Portuguese man said: “The manager can help but the nature of the player as a professional is the most important. Clearly if these boys don’t care about results and don’t care about the position we finish at the end of the season we’ll be in big, big trouble for the future.”

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The summer transfer window was already going to be a massive one seen as it’s Mourinho’s first, but with their struggles in the Premier League, making the right kind of reinforcements will be even more crucial.

And according to The Athletic, Spurs are now confident of signing Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, with fans of the north London side flooding to Twitter to share their reactions about the update.

One Spurs fan pointed to the defeat to Sheffield United as a key reason why they need someone like Hojbjerg, and it’s clear to see why – as per Sofascore, the Lilywhites won less ground duels and aerial duels, and made less tackles, interceptions and clearances too.

Another Spurs fan pointed to the midfielder’s “attitude and work-rate”, with Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl hailing him as a “fantastic player” and a “good example of professionalism” despite stripping him of the captaincy.

Hojbjerg is the kind of combative powerhouse that would represent everything Tanguy Ndombele doesn’t.

A player who has built up considerable Premier League experience in his time with Southampton, the Denmark international would be more likely to hit the ground running at Tottenham, and is the kind of proven option they could do with.

With finances likely to be restricted, signings players who you know can do the business at Premier League level will be vital, and Hojbjerg ticks that box.

West Brom look to avoid a repeat of their Louie Barry situation with Nathan Ferguson

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

West Bromwich Albion could sell Nathan Ferguson during the January transfer window, to protect themselves from losing him for a nominal fee in the summer, as reported by The Daily Mail.

What’s the story?

West Brom risk losing teenage revelation Ferguson with very little compensation if they do not sell him during the January transfer window or agree a contract extension.

The defender’s current deal comes to an end upon this season’s culmination and if he were to move abroad, the Baggies could face a similar situation to that of Louie Barry.

This saw Barcelona move in for the young talent, and due to the fact he was moving abroad, the Spanish giants only needed to pay around £235,000 in compensation.

Considering their past misfortune, West Brom are thinking of selling Ferguson in January, with Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace said to be interested.

Preventing a repeat of history

The Baggies have allowed themselves to be drawn into a tough position, as they now have a race against time to get Ferguson on a new contract, with the youngster having grown to be a prominent player in the team, boasting 13 starts this season.

Considering this is Ferguson’s breakthrough season, there will likely be plenty of frustrations at the Hawthorns that they won’t be able to enjoy the fruits of their youth coaches’ labour first-hand for longer.

However, this could be a necessary move to ensure the club gets the funds they deserve if they are to lose the teenager, which wasn’t the case with Barry’s departure.

Selling Ferguson so soon will probably not have been what many at the club envisaged and losing him midway through a promotion push is certainly a blow, but it is arguably their best option considering the circumstances.

At the very least, history won’t be repeating itself at the Hawthorns.

Birmingham are being held back by Jefferson Montero’s injury

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

So close, but still a little bit to go.

Having suffered an injury against Stoke City back in September, Birmingham City have been without their deadline day signing Jefferson Montero.

Whilst he has been making efforts to get back as soon as possible, this weekend’s game against Leeds looks to be a game too early for him.

Speaking in his press conference yesterday, Pep Clotet said:

“He has got over his injury now. He has had two weeks of physical training now to get him up to speed. He recovered much sooner than we expected, which is another sign of all the good professionals we have in the medical department.

“He could be ready for this weekend although it is a little bit early in terms of fitness.”

On the chalkboard

As we have discussed previously on FFC, Birmingham seem to be operating very much in a 4-4-2 formation recently with Dan Crowley on the right-hand side, but they haven’t quite managed to work out who to play on the left flank.

They have shoe-horned in the likes of Jude Bellingham and Fran Villalba to play in that role, but none of them have quite managed to make it their own. Villalba scored last time out but that’s his only strike in England to date.

Perhaps that’s why Clotet went out and got Montero on deadline day, he saw that he didn’t have the personnel to make it happen, only to see those plans hampered by his injury.

Thogden ranks all 24 Championship home kits in the video below…

Bringing in the Ecuadorian would be a great way to readdress that balance somewhat and that’s why the Blues have been held back in his absence.

Whilst Crowley may not be a natural winger, he seems to be doing quite well at it, but then having a natural winger on the other side can make the formation work a whole lot better that it has been.

If he can get back to his form at Swansea, when he was averaging close to double the number of crosses per game than he is now, Lukas Jutkiewicz will thank him for whipping so many balls into the box. This could be a game-changing combination for Birmingham.

The striker is renowned for his prowess in the air, winning 8 aerial duels each outing this term. Montero, meanwhile, has a career high key pass rate of 1.2 per game over an entire season. It’s clear that they could benefit each other.

Birmingham have been getting on averagely without the 64-cap wide man so far, so they could be doing better, and the return of Montero might be the key to making that happen.
