Aston Villa: Fresh bid being prepared for Tom Heaton

Aston Villa are preparing a fresh bid for Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton, according to Football Insider.

Villa previously had a bid of £4 million rejected and were told they would need to pay £12 million if they wanted to sign the ‘keeper, who has represented the England national team three times.

While they are not willing to meet the price tag set by Burnley, with the 33-year-old’s contract coming to an end next summer, the Villans are going to “significantly increase their bid”.

Stoke City’s Jack Butland is another goalkeeper Villa have been linked with, though they would need to pay around £30 million to get him, as reported by The Daily Star.

Having returned from injury and reclaimed his spot in the Burnley team, Heaton made 19 Premier League appearances last season, keeping four clean sheets and conceding 27 goals.

On the other hand, Jack Butland played 45 Championship games for Stoke last season, keeping 18 clean sheets and conceding 51 goals.

Both goalkeepers were included in the England squad for their UEFA Nations League finals fixtures, though neither got onto the pitch – it is Butland who featured most recently, playing the entire 90 minutes in a 1-0 friendly win against Switzerland in September 2018.

Heaton was the Premier League goalkeeper last season, though Butland arguably had the better season – partly down to the Burnley man’s injury the campaign before – as the 26-year-old featured across the entire season and played for England.

While Butland would be a brilliant signing for Aston Villa, when the amount they have already spent is considered, they should look to take the cost of the deal into account.

By going for Heaton as opposed to Butland, Villa could save themselves money while still getting an experienced and reliable goalkeeper – therefore going for Heaton is a sensible decision from the Villans.

Celtic are close to signing Toulouse defender Christopher Jullien

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Celtic are closing in on a deal for Toulouse central defender Christopher Jullien, as reported by The Evening Times.

What’s the story?

Reports from France emerged earlier this week claiming that the Hoops had agreed a fee with the Ligue 1 club for the 26-year-old and Celtic manager Neil Lennon has now confirmed he’s on his way.

How can Celtic improve next season? A Hoops fan tells us how in the video below…

As quoted by The Evening Times, the Hoops boss said on Wednesday evening:

“We are getting close with Jullien, hopefully we can get something sorted in the next day or so.

“We have been tracking him for a while and we like we what we see with him. Negotiations have gone well, so it’s a case of getting the paperwork sorted.

“I like him. He’s a dominant type and very powerful. We are just looking for a bit more pace and power in the team to add a jag to the squad.

“He’s a quality player and he’s had a couple of really good years in the top echelons of French football. Hopefully we can get it over the line – but it’s not done yet.

“If we get it done, we’d look to get him to Austria as soon as possible.”

The paper have reported that the defender could be arriving at Celtic Park for a fee of around €7m (£6.27m), which would make him one of the most expensive signings in the club’s history.

What does he offer Celtic?

Celtic are suffering in the centre-back positions right now after the departures of Dedryck Boyata and Filip Benkovic at the end of last season.

Both of those defenders were the preferred picks of Brendan Rodgers before he left for Leicester City and the duo must be replaced ahead of Celtic’s potential run to the UEFA Champions League group stages.

Lennon has found a functional defensive partnership in Kristoffer Ajer and Jozo Simunovic, but the only cover available to those two comes in the shape of Jack Hendry and Marvin Compper, both of whom have massively flopped since signing in January 2018.

Jullien is an experienced defender who has been a regular in Ligue 1 over the last three seasons, making 101 league appearances in that time. That would suggest he is more than capable of performing at Scottish Premiership level.

Physically imposing at 6ft 5in, he’s strong in the air too, winning an average of 4.3 aerial battles per game in the French top-flight last season, the sixth most in the country.

Celtic are getting an accomplished French talent who will immediately compete for first-team places and can become the imposing defensive presence they need in the box next season.

Mixed opinions: Leeds fans react to shock link with goalkeeping legend

[ad_pod ]

According to Corriere della Sera, via Sport Witness, Leeds United are interested in a summer swoop for experienced goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

Buffon, 41, will be available on a free transfer when his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires at the end of this month.

According to Corriere della Sera, via Sport Witness, Leeds are fighting Fluminense and Porto for the signature of the veteran, who helped PSG win another Ligue 1 title last term.

Leeds, of course, already have a fairly high-profile goalkeeper in the shape of Kiko Casilla, who arrived from Real Madrid in January.

However, the signing of Buffon would certainly eclipse the Casilla deal.

As expected, a whole host of Leeds fans have been on social media offering their views on what is, to be honest, a surprise transfer report.

Some want the Italian to arrive this summer although that is not a view shared by everyone.

The image that proves Steven Bergwijn is perfect for Spurs

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Steven Bergwijn from PSV Eindhoven this summer, per the Daily Mail.

The winger has also been linked with Liverpool and Manchester United but Spurs are the English side most likely to bring him in; he is valued at £35million by the Dutch outfit.

A winger who can play on the left or the right, he netted 15 goals in 2018/19 and also laid on 13 assists.

He played 86 minutes against Spurs in the Champions League group stages as Mauricio Pochettino’s men won 2-1 and he also started both games against Barcelona.

And the picture below perhaps sums up exactly why the north London club are so keen to bring the 21-year-old to England, as he tussles with Lionel Messi in his own half.

Pochettino, after all, instils within his players a collective mentality that ensures there are no passengers.

And Bergwijn’s willingness to track back and get stuck in will surely have endeared him to the Tottenham boss.

Here is a forward with the ability to score, create and get stuck in, and who has already won five caps for the Netherlands.

At £35m he may well be a snip in today’s market.

The Verdict: Can Grealish replace Eriksen at Tottenham?

[ad_pod ]

Jack Grealish has long been touted as a Tottenham Hotspur target and the Daily Star reported last weekend that Spurs are eyeing a £35million bid this summer.

Grealish, of course, has been central to Aston Villa’s promotion push and played a key role in the club’s 2-1 win over West Brom in the first leg of their play-off semi-final on Saturday.

Spurs’ reported pursuit of the 23-year-old coincides with Real Madrid’s interest in Christian Eriksen.

AS report that the attacking midfielder has already reached a verbal agreement with the Spanish club over a transfer but it remains to be seen if Tottenham’s progression to the Champions League final will complicate matters.

Nevertheless, if Eriksen does leave, would Grealish be a suitable replacement? Football FanCast’s writers have their say below!

James Beavis

“Some Tottenham fans may not agree, but I think he is ready to step up and do exactly that. Grealish’s tally of goals and assists in the Championship this term may not be overly impressive, but it doesn’t mean he hasn’t been hugely effective on the pitch. He can dribble, he provides key passes and he draws fouls. Spurs have sometimes gone a little stale in attacking midfield areas with Eriksen and Dele Alli struggling for consistency, and Grealish would bring some much-needed enthusiasm and freshness to the position. He is the exciting player that can help Spurs reach the next level.”

Jack Saville

“Eriksen is levels above Grealish and Spurs fans cannot expect the 23-year-old to step into the squad and immediately work miracles. He’s Villa’s star player and a brilliant playmaker at Championship level, but replicating that type of form in the elite tier of English football will not be an overnight process. Pochettino could transform him into the player he threatened to be when he burst onto the scene as a teenager, however, he’s not a ready-made replacement for Eriksen.”

Billy Meyers

“Christian Eriksen is a player of genuine world-class ability, and a player who has only really ever done it in the Championship such as Jack Grealish cannot be expected to replace him. The Aston Villa man is a star and will almost definitely make it big in the Premier League, but to move to a level as high as Tottenham, who are Champions League finalists, is too much of an ask for a player yet to fulfil his potential.”

Between The Lines: Sunderland fans deserve better than Methven’s comments

[ad_pod ]

Sunderland executive director Charlie Methven has had his say on the club’s Wembley heartbreak, but the Black Cats shareholder has chosen his words extremely poorly.

Jack Ross’ side were simply not good enough at Wembley on Monday, and everyone knows it.

The fans were visibly frustrated throughout the afternoon, and it wasn’t hard to see why, as the Black Cats just did not take advantage of the gift-wrapped head-start afforded to them by Charlton.

After Naby Sarr’s comical early own goal, the Wearsiders sat on their lead, created absolutely nothing going forward and relied on an isolated Charlie Wyke to hold the ball up by himself.

Eventually, the Addicks found their way through to win the day in stoppage time, and Methven has given his verdict on the devastating result.

What did he say?

In an interview with Metro Radio, he said: “Ultimately Sunderland fans need to get realistic about that (staying in League One).

“Charlton have been in the Premier League for much of the last 20, 30 years and they had 40,000 fans to our 34,000 fans.

Pl>ymaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals he would have snubbed Tottenham for Arsenal if they’d come knocking in 2005…

“On sheer size of club, it’s hard to say that Charlton are the ones that deserved to stay down. I thought the Charlton fans were very loud. I thought our fans were quiet.

“As management, we have to take responsibility that the club didn’t quite believe enough to make it happen.

“We all need to take a look at ourselves now and understand what we need to do to sort this out and get better because it’s obviously a terrific disappointment.”

Make up your mind

So which one is it Charlie? Is another season in League One a “tremendous disappointment”? Or do Black Cats fans need to “get realistic” and accept a second go at the third tier?

Methven, together with Stewart Donald, have brought life back to the club, and their efforts to constantly interact with the fans is admirable, but the executive director simply cannot place a single ounce of blame for Sunday’s disappointment on those fans.

40,000 Wearsiders packed into Wembley for the Checkatrade Trophy final, and another 34,000 rocked up on Sunday ready to produce memories that would last a lifetime.

The performance on the pitch was utterly lifeless, and the responsibility for that lies with the players, manager, staff and owners. Methven has got it all wrong on this occasion.

No thanks! Liverpool fans are against a move for Manchester United reject Memphis Depay

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to reveal that they are against a move for Lyon forward Memphis Depay, formerly of the Reds’ arch-rivals Manchester United, after The Mirror linked them with a move for the £50m-rated attacker.

Depay joined United in 2015 from PSV Eindhoven for a fee in the region of £25m-£30m, but managed to score just seven goals in 53 appearances as he flopped miserably.

Mo Salah has been brutally mocked for his recent diving antics in a new video by 442oons. Check it out below…

The Holland international seemed to struggle with the physicality of the English game, and was shipped off to Lyon after just a season-and-a-half at Old Trafford.

Liverpool are in need of a forward to provide serious competition to Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, and Depay would seem like a decent option having scored eight goals and recorded 12 assists for Lyon this season.

However, his ties with bitter rivals United appear to have put some fans off the prospect of a move, with many not in favour of seeing the 25-year-old arrive at Anfield…
