Kaneria's ban appeal adjourned

Danish Kaneria’s appeal against the lifetime ban given to him by the ECB was adjourned in London on Monday and is unlikely to resume until the New Year. The adjournment came following legal submissions from both sides and a new date for the hearing will be agreed in due course. Mervyn Westfield was not present on Monday.Kaneria was punished by an ECB disciplinary panel in June for his role in the spot-fixing case involving Westfield when the two were team-mates at Essex in 2009. Westfield was jailed for four months for his part in conceding a set number of runs in an over during a CB40 match against Durham.Westfield, who was banned for five years but can play club cricket after three, gave evidence against Kaneria at the initial ECB hearing, revealing details about how the former Pakistan legspinner introduced him to an Indian businessman known as Arun or Anu Bhatt.Kaneria, who had been warned about Bhatt’s alleged connections to illegal betting, admitted putting the two in contact but claimed he had been trying to distance himself from Bhatt. The PCB said in July that Kaneria would be suspended from playing until the outcome of the appeal was known.

Sri Lanka call up Nuwan Pradeep

Fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep has been called up to the Sri Lanka squad for the remainder of the one-day series against India, in place of the injured Nuwan Kulasekara

Sa'adi Thawfeeq23-Jul-2012Fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep has been called up to the Sri Lanka squad for the remainder of the one-day series against India, in place of the injured Nuwan Kulasekara. Pradeep has played three Tests, but is yet to debut in ODIs.Sri Lanka’s chairman of selectors, Ashantha de Mel, said that Pradeep will join the team on Monday, after returning from Zimbabwe, where he had played in the tri-series involving Sri Lanka, South Africa and Zimbabwe’s A teams. Pradeep had picked up three wickets in two matches in the tournament.Pradeep debuted in Tests in October 2011, against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi, and was originally part of Sri Lanka squad that toured South Africa following that. However, he injured himself in a warm-up game in South Africa and was out of action for three months. He returned to first-class cricket in March, and was picked for the home series against Pakistan.Kulasekara had strained his groin while attempting a catch in the first one-dayer against India on Saturday. After the incident, he could not complete his quota of overs and came out to bat only at No. 11 with India in control of the match. The second one-dayer will be played in Hambantota on Tuesday.

Eight applicants for Pakistan bowling coach position

Eight people, including five Pakistanis, have applied for the position of the country’s bowling coach, ESPNcricinfo has learnt

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Mar-2012Eight people, including five Pakistanis, have applied for the position of the country’s bowling coach, ESPNcricinfo has learnt. Among the applicants are Ian Pont, the former Bangladesh bowling coach, Bazeegh Zaka, the Maldives coach, and former Pakistan players Jalal-ud-Din, Mohsin Kamal, Sabih Azhar and Mohammad Akram. The vacancy was created after the PCB failed to prevent former Pakistan bowling coach Aaqib Javed from moving on to become UAE head coach. The PCB’s plan, under former chairman Ijaz Butt, was to bring in only a head coach to replace Waqar Younis, who resigned due to health reasons. But the new chairman, Zaka Ashraf, planned to form a team of specialist coaching staff. Dav Whatmore and Julien Foutain were appointed head/batting and fielding coach respectively and Javed was to continue as bowling coach but the PCB received a blow when he decided to move to the UAE.There are five Pakistanis among the applicants. Kamal has recently ended a three-year head-coach contract with Bahrain Cricket Association. Azhar, who is currently working with the Pakistan Under-19 team, has ample experience in the country’s domestic circuit while Jalal-ud-Din took the first hat-trick in an ODI. Akram has been settled in England for some years now.It will be a tough task for the PCB to shortlist candidates from the eight applicants as the major requirement for the applicant is to have at least five years of experience in a similar role with elite cricketers. Most of the applicants don’t fulfill this requirement.

Pietersen faces up to DRS challenge

Kevin Pietersen has admitted he is facing the toughest challenge of his career as he adapts his game to cope with the Decision Review System

George Dobell in Dubai17-Feb-2012Kevin Pietersen has admitted he is facing the toughest challenge of his career as he adapts his game to cope with the Decision Review System.Pietersen, 31, scored just 67 runs in six innings in the Test series and averaged only 11.16 as Pakistan defeated England 3-0. He fell lbw on three occasions. Each time the decision was sent to the third umpire for review and on two of those occasions Pietersen was given out when the ball-tracking technology showed the delivery would just have clipped the stumps. He has also made just three half-centuries in his last 36 ODI innings and, since the start of 2009, averages only 24.88 in 50-over cricket.Pietersen feels that the introduction of the DRS has made life far harder for batsmen but insists that, despite the statistics, his confidence remains high and he feels in good form.”In my career so far, this is the toughest I’ve ever found it,” Pietersen said. “Because of the new DRS, there are definitely technical issues you have to look at in order to save yourself. Batters are not getting the benefit of the doubt any more.”Umpires are giving a lot more lbws. It just has to be clipping and you’re out. Two, three, four years ago you were never, ever out. I have had to change my game, but it’s not just me. Left-arm spinners now are gold dust.”It’s been tough. But I’m not bothered, because it’s not a case of me walking out to the middle and thinking ‘where’s my next run coming from?'”Only a cricketer would understand this, but I actually feel in fantastic form. I might turn down a training session because I feel I’m playing fine. It’s just when you’re playing spin, and spin is bowled to you all day every single day, you just need to make one little mistake. You just need a little bit of luck to go your way, a dropped catch or an lbw decision that is referred. The wheel turns; in life, the wheel turns. I’ve been through this before. I’m not bothered at all.”Pietersen’s insistence that he is out of fortune rather than form might surprise some onlookers. He has seemed to lack balance at the crease and paid the price for a failure to play straight. It is hard to avoid the conclusion that there is an element of denial in his suggestion that he has been a victim of circumstance.Pietersen also justified his relatively cautious batting in the current ODI series. Pietersen was promoted to the opener’s position in the understanding that he would help the side get off to a brisk start but, in two innings, he has faced 82 balls for his 40 runs. That is a strike-rate of 48.78. Pietersen reasons that, in such conditions, it is imperative that England keep wickets in hand and adopt a more measured approach.”Whenever I’ve played for England in ODIs, we’ve always got off to a start like ten for two, 15 for one, 30 for three,” Pietersen said. “In the subcontinent, against India, we kept getting bowled out.”We were always a wicket down in the first three overs and I was always batting in the first 10 overs in that series. When you’re two down in the first ten overs, all that happens in the middle when the spinners come on you is that you lose two wickets there, then you’re four down, five down. You can easily go to six down or seven down.”But if you start off with a solid platform, as I’ve tried to do over the last week or so, if you lose those two wickets in the middle overs, you’ve still got high-class batters and skilful players – whereas they’re not as skilful down the bottom of the order.”England begin Sri Lanka planning

On Saturday England hope to confirm that those members of the Test squad not involved in the limited-overs series in the UAE – Ian Bell, Monty Panesar, Matt Prior and Andrew Strauss – will travel to Sri Lanka early to begin their acclimatisation. The ECB have been trying to place the quartet within Sri Lankan domestic teams.
Meanwhile, Ajmal Shahzad, the Yorkshire seamer, has arrived in Dubai to provide net bowling for the England squad as he continues his rehabilitation following ankle surgery. He is not part of the squad and will not be considered for selection.

Pietersen said he was relishing the challenge of opening the batting and expressed the hope that it was a permanent move.”It’s brilliant,” he said. I’d like it to be permanent; Andy Flower wants it to be permanent; Alastair Cook wants it to be permanent. It’s something that we’re definitely looking to.”You look at it and just think ‘why can’t I do it?’ I’ve batted four in England; I’ve played in swinging conditions all around the world; I’ve been successful in Test match cricket against swinging balls. Why can’t I do it in the one-day format at the top of the order? It’s something that I’m looking forward to. It’s a lovely little challenge; a nice one.”Before the World Cup there were suggestions in some quarters that Pietersen was thinking of retiring from ODI cricket. He reiterated that was not the case and stated that the ECB was happy to allow him to appear in the IPL. He did specify, however, that his motivation for playing in the IPL was not gaining experience ahead of the World T20 to be contested in Sri Lanka in September.”I’m here playing for England,” Pietersen said. “I love playing for England. England gives me the opportunities to sign with Delhi. Why would I give anything up? I’m totally committed to England. I’m not looking at the IPL as preparation for the World T20.”A fierce sand storm blew in Dubai throughout Friday, causing the Physical Disability game between Pakistan and England to be abandoned. While there are some concerns that a continuation of such weather could cause problems in Saturday’s ODI, the enclosed nature of the stadium in Dubai Sports City should minimise any disruption. England reported no injury concerns, with Ravi Bopara, Jos Buttler and Tim Bresnan all now fit and available for selection.

Captain Clarke delivers series victory

In his first series as Test captain, Michael Clarke has delivered Australia a 1-0 victory over Sri Lanka, moved them up to fourth in the ICC rankings, and broken his own personal drought with his first Test century in 18 months

The Report by Brydon Coverdale20-Sep-2011
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMichael Clarke made his first Test hundred as Australia’s captain•AFPSmart stats

Michael Hussey’s aggregate of 463 runs in the series is the fourth-highest overall by a batsman in a three-Test series in Sri Lanka and the second-highest among visiting batsmen after Brian Lara’s 688 runs in 2001-02.

This is the fourth time that Australia have scored over 400 in their second innings in Sri Lanka. On the three previous occasions, they went on to win the Test.

Michael Clarke scored his 15th century in Tests. It is also his first century since his 168 against New Zealand in March 2010.

Clarke scored 86 of his 112 runs in front of the wicket. In all, he hit 13 fours and three sixes. In contrast, Phil Hughes scored 63 of his 126 runs behind the wicket.

The five fifty-plus partnerships in Australia’s second innings is joint-second on the list of most fifty-plus stands for visiting teams in Sri Lanka. Pakistan are on top, with six fifty-plus stands in Galle in 2000.

The 176-run stand between Hussey and Clarke is the highest ever fifth-wicket partnership for Australia against Sri Lanka.

This is Sri Lanka’s first defeat in a home series since the 1-0 loss to Pakistan in 2006. The previous series defeat in a three-match home series also came against Australia, in 2004, when they lost 3-0.

Australia’s 1-0 triumph is their first series win since the 2-0 win in New Zealand in 2010. In between, they drew a series against Pakistan and lost to India and England.

Rangana Herath’s haul of 7 for 157 is the best bowling performance by a Sri Lankan bowler in Tests against Australia. He also became the fourth Sri Lankan bowler to reach the 100-wicket mark in Tests.

In his first series as Test captain, Michael Clarke has delivered Australia a 1-0 victory over Sri Lanka, moved them up to fourth in the ICC Test rankings, retained the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy and broken his own personal drought with his first Test century in 18 months. Not a bad way to start a new job. On the final day of the series, Clarke played a true captain’s innings to deny Sri Lanka any hope of winning the match, which ended in a draw that was as good as a victory for Australia.Sri Lanka began the morning needing quick wickets to knock Australia over and set up a chase. By tea, Tillakaratne Dilshan’s men had added only two breakthroughs to the three wickets they had taken on the fourth afternoon, and they were left not only to rue their slow batting in a match they had to win, but also to wonder how long their attack will take to deliver them a Test win in the post-Muttiah Muralitharan era.Rangana Herath toiled manfully to earn a career-best 7 for 157, but the harsh truth is that Sri Lanka haven’t won a Test since Murali last played for them in July 2010. And by losing a home series for just the third time in ten years, they have fallen to fifth on the ICC rankings list. Besides Herath, none of the bowlers looked threatening on the final day, not that their task was an easy one on a pitch offering nothing. There was a glimmer of hope early, when Phillip Hughes (126) top-edged Herath to square leg, having added only four to his overnight total. But that brought Clarke and Michael Hussey together, and they proceeded to bat Sri Lanka out of the game in a 176-run partnership, an Australian fifth-wicket record against Sri Lanka, beating the 155 set by David Hookes and Allan Border in the first Test ever played between the two countries. And while Hussey missed the chance to score his third hundred of the series, falling for 93, Clarke didn’t waste his opportunity to end a drought that stretched back to Australia’s tour of New Zealand last March. It was an outstanding effort from Clarke, for when he came to the crease late on day four, a Sri Lanka victory was very much a possibility. He batted precisely the way a captain should in such circumstances, first and foremost guarding his wicket fiercely, but also ticking the scoreboard over to add to Sri Lanka’s problems. At one point during the morning, he was 24 from 80 deliveries, but he lifted his rate as the day wore on, three times advancing down the pitch to Herath to drive him down the ground for six.Although he survived a stumping chance when Prasanna Jayawardene failed to glove the ball cleanly, Clarke provided a masterclass in handling spin, using his feet and smothering the turn where he could. He brought up his century in exactly that manner, from his 139th ball, dancing down the pitch to clip Herath wide of mid-on for a boundary, and it was a fine way to cap off a tour during which his captaincy has been bold and thoughtful.Eventually, Clarke fell for 112 driving a catch to mid-on from the bowling of Herath, following some banter between Clarke and Kumar Sangakkara, and the chirping continued as Clarke walked off the field. But the most important thing was that he had ensured a series win.The only remaining point of interest was whether Hussey would finish his incredible tour with a century in each innings of a Test for the first time, having scored 118 in the first innings. Alas, he top-edged a sweep off Dilshan and was caught for 93. Still, he was unequivocally the Player of the Series, with scores of 95, 15, 142, 118 and 93, as well as two wickets and a stunning catch. It continued a remarkable renaissance for Hussey, 36, whose past two series, the Ashes at home and this Sri Lankan tour, have been the most prolific in his Test career. Herath also produced his best Test series, easily topping the wicket tally from either side with 16 at an average of 23, despite missing the second Test to injury, but it will hardly be a series he’ll remember with fondness.Still, he finished off strongly, securing his first six-for when Brad Haddin (30) was caught at wide mid-off, and that became a seven-wicket haul when he trapped Peter Siddle lbw for 26 as the sun set on the SSC. It was also his 100th Test wicket, making him the fourth Sri Lanka player to the milestone, after Muralitharan, Chaminda Vaas and Lasith Malinga.Australia were finally bowled out for 488, and Sri Lanka had to bat for two overs before the captains could agree to an early end. Clarke handed the ball to Trent Copeland and Nathan Lyon, who both debuted during the series, and finished with one over each.It was a fitting way to end a series in which Australia’s debutants – Lyon, Copeland and Shaun Marsh – played key roles. Their next job is to take on the world No.2, South Africa, in Cape Town and Johannesburg. For now, Clarke and his men can celebrate. Finally, they are moving in the right direction.

Tottenham: Conte demands new ‘absolute priority’ signing

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte has demanded a new ‘absolute priority’ signing for the club this summer, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Big summer on the cards?

The Premier League top-four chasers could be facing a big transfer window at the end of the 2021/2022 season as Conte eyes a major transfer overhaul.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As many as six new additions are reportedly in their sights with a reserve goalkeeper, right-wing-back, central defender, two midfielders and a forward set to be targeted (The Telegraph).

The Athletic have also claimed that a centre-back is top of Conte’s wish-list as club chief Fabio Paratici and co draw up a list of candidates ahead of June 10.

The Latest: Conte demands new ‘absolute priority’ signing…

Now, according to reports out of Spain, the Lilywhites head coach has demanded Inter Milan defender and rumoured target Stefan de Vrij as his new ‘absolute priority’ signing.

Allegedly ‘by order’ of Conte, Spurs have officially joined the list of suitors for the Nerazzurri star as their manager green-lights a move for him – with the 52-year-old now prioritising his ‘arrival’ at N17.

The Verdict: Get it done?

De Vrij’s contract situation at the San Siro, with his current deal set to expire in 2023 as things stand, could mean the Serie A giants aren’t in the strongest of positions to demand a hefty fee for his services.

Reports have even suggested he could leave for as little as £15 million and we believe Spurs should take full advantage and back Conte with a summer bid.

The 30-year-old was a mainstay under Tottenham’s boss when he guided Inter to a 2020/2021 Scudetto title, playing the sixth-highest amount of minutes in the league and making more clearances per 90 than any of his teammates (WhoScored).

There’s no reason de Vrij couldn’t replicate this form in England with members of the media even branding the Netherlands international a would-be ‘unbelievable signing’ (Dean Jones).

Taking this into account, it’s hardly surprising Conte has put his former star top of the agenda.

Australia seek series win in flood-ravaged Brisbane

The floodwaters had receded but the devastation was still easy to see around Goodna, west of Brisbane, where the Australian cricketers did their bit to give the community something to smile about during time at a local school. They now hope to give Queenslanders some joy by securing the one-day series against England with victory at the Gabba on Sunday. This was the first time the squad had returned to Brisbane since the flooding – although Shane Watson went to his hometown, Ipswich, two weeks ago just as the recovery work began – and they visited schools and shopping malls around some of the worst-affected areas west of the city. The swollen, murky brown Brisbane River which snakes through the city is a reminder of how recently the disaster unfolded.Australia are now aiming to make this the city where they seal the series after giving England a lifeline at Adelaide and Watson believes the local support will make a huge difference. “It’s going to be a very emotional day and hopefully that can help pull us over the line and win the series,” he said.England have made their own donations to the flood appeal during this series and are aware of the motivating factors involved in this match for Australia. “Our hearts have gone out to the people. Seeing those things on TV is pretty shocking,” Chris Tremlett said. “The England team have been fully behind it. I imagine it will be a very emotional time for people on Sunday and we are glad to be part of it.”Watson has previously spoken about how his mind has often been on events in Queensland during the one-day series, yet he has been able to maintain his consistent form with a match-winning 161 at Melbourne and 64 at Adelaide. But while his success for Australia gives him great pleasure these past few weeks have given him a sense of perspective.”There’s no doubt that during the period when you didn’t know the extent of devastation, around Ipswich especially, it was something that took my mind off the cricket,” he said. “After the disappointment of the Ashes series it put my life into perspective for sure. It’s just great I was able to score runs during that period but life is bigger and greater than cricket, even though I love playing it.”Although the Suncorp Stadium, which is used for rugby and soccer, was flooded, the Gabba was largely unaffected and recently staged back-to-back Big Bash games. Kevin Mitchell Jr, the Gabba curator, has no concerns about the pitch for Sunday’s game despite the horrific weather of a few weeks ago.”It’s looking pretty good with nice even cover of grass so should play uniformly,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “With all the rain, we’re not too bad. The only way the Gabba gets flooded is if the stormwater and the tide from Norman Creek occur together. Since the redevelopment of the ground it’s happened four times. The wicket block is never affected.”Mitchell Johnson’s occasional state appearances now come for Western Australia, but he was born in Townsville and retains a strong connection to his home state. “Just driving through now and seeing where the levels were, Shane [Watson] showed me some photos of the water. It does blow you away and it’s hard to believe,” he said. “The Queensland spirit is nice and strong and we are sticking behind each other. The day after it all happened you saw the pictures of everyone lending a hand, digging that mud up, and doing everything they can.”Johnson, who struggled during the Ashes apart from his matchwinning performance in Perth, has been a frustrated watcher during the last three matches due to a throat infection. He hopes to return to the side in Brisbane and build form ahead of the World Cup in what he believes will be a memorable occasion.”I’m certainly looking forward to getting back and playing again,” he said. “It was hard sitting back on Australia Day and not being able to play, it’s one of the ones you want to take part in. Coming here on Sunday, back on home turf, hopefully I’ll get a game and be able to raise some more money.”

Mohammad Wasim guides KRL's hunt for lead

Round-up of the second day of the sixth round of Division Two of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Nov-2010Raheel Majeed’s career-best 162 resisted the impact of Mohammad Irfan’s five-wicket haul as Pakistan Television progressed to 325 before reducing Khan Research Laboratories to 160 for 5 at the Khan Research Laboratory Ground in Rawalpindi. Majeed and Yasim Murtaza (60) extended their partnership to 147 before PTV lost their last three wickets for the addition of no runs. KRL’s reply was steered by a run-a-ball 82 from captain Mohammad Wasim, but Saad Altaf and Mohammad Ali, who bowled unchanged for 36 overs until stumps, made regular breakthroughs at the other end to leave the game in the balance.Peshawar’s batsmen stamped their authority on the second day at the Arbab Niaz Khan Stadium as Quetta lost ground following the bowler-dominated opening day. The visitors could only add 38 to their overnight 87 for 6, conceding a 87-run first innings lead. The wickets were shared around by the home seamers, with Imran Khan finishing with 4 for 50. Peshawar’s reply was driven by steady half-centuries from Ashfaq Ahmed, Sajjad Ahmed (1) and Tariq Khan. Quetta’s incisiveness was badly hampered by the absence of first-innings hero Arun Lal, who could bowl only three balls on the second day. Kashif Sattar picked up three wickets, but could not check Peshawar’s surge to an imposing 290 for 5 by stumps. It was slow progress all-round at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium where Abbottabad and State Bank of Pakistan were locked in an attritional battle for the upper hand. Resuming at 221 for 5, the hosts could not make much headway on the second day. Mohammad Naved, Ansar Javed and Nazar Hussain shared nine wickets to bowl Abbottabad out for the addition of 57 runs. SBP lost their captain Kashif Siddiq early in their reply and batted cautiously thereafter in search of the first-innings lead. Rameez Alam guided their reply to 150 for 3, and was unbeaten on an even 50 at stumps. Seamer Ahmed Jamal was responsible for all three breakthroughs.Karachi White’s bowlers dismissed Lahore Shalimar for 139, gaining a 122-run first-innings lead at the Southend Club Cricket Stadium in Karachi. Asif Khan was the only batsman to come to terms with the all-round host attack. Azam Hussain and Atif Maqbool finished with three wickets apiece while the remaining four were shared by Sohail Khan and Ali Mudassar. Inspired by the bowlers, the home batsmen responded with a strong start to their second innings, with unbeaten half-centuries from Asif Zakir and Rameez Aziz guiding them to 180 for 3 by stumps.Lahore Ravi were firmly in control of their match against Hyderabad, with centuries from Junaid Jan and Fahad-ul-Haq lifting them to 254 for 2 at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground. Opener Mohammad Saad departed for 14, but thereafter it was a long fruitless day for the visitors. Fahad was the more aggressive of the pair, hitting 13 fours in his 103 off 160 balls. He perished after adding 164 for the second wicket, but Junaid stayed put till stumps, finishing unbeaten on 107 off 231 balls.
