Next Palace boss in line for Zaha boost

Steve Parish could give Crystal Palace’s next manager a massive boost before he’s even started…

What’s the word?

According to The Athletic’s Matt Woosnam, Eagles sensation Wilfried Zaha is more likely to sign a new contract at Selhurst Park than leave for a bigger club.

When asked about the 28-year-old winger and his future in south-east London, the ever-reliable journalist responded:

Woosnam also suggested towards the end of a recent column on the Ivory Coast international that “a move [this summer] may therefore not be forthcoming.”

Major attraction

Roy Hodgson’s own future is very much shrouded in mystery itself but as he nears the expiry of his contract, it does seem ever so likely that the 73-year-old veteran will part ways with Palace.

According to Football Insider, Burnley boss Sean Dyche is the top target to succeed him, whilst the likes of former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard and legendary Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira, among others, have been linked with the role.

And Parish can make the job all that more attractive if he does tie down their star performer, Zaha, to a new deal. It’ll hand whoever becomes the next man at Selhurst Park an instant boost.

The 28-year-old forward, who earns a reported £130k-per-week, has once again proved to be integral to their fortunes this season. His 6.88 average rating is only second to one other player, and he ranks top for goals scored (ten) and dribbles per game (1.8), via WhoScored.

In recent windows, Zaha has been heavily mooted with Premier League rivals Arsenal and Everton but ultimately, Palace’s mega-money £80m asking price had put suitors off the £26m-rated talisman.

It’s no wonder that the Gunners were linked with interest as their manager, Mikel Arteta, dubbed Zaha “phenomenal” and “unique,” whilst Hodgson once reaffirmed his importance to the club by once describing him a “game-changer.”

Back in February, Palace had lost 17 of 19 league games in his absence and even failed to score in 15 of those defeats, only highlighting how crucial he is to the side.

Whether it’s Lampard, Dyche or even Hodgson, Parish can give the next man in the dugout a perfect start to life at the Eagles by tying down their leading man.

That’s for sure.

LFC: Fans react to Carragher’s FSG comments

Fans of Liverpool have been reacting to a post on Twitter, which relayed the comments of Jamie Carragher regarding FSG’s position in charge of the Reds.

Following their catastrophic lapse of judgement in agreeing to join the proposed European Super League, Liverpool announced late on Tuesday evening that they have now retracted their interest in the breakaway tournament, with John W Henry issuing a grovelling apology to the Liverpool fans early on Wednesday morning.

However, when speaking about the issue on Sky Sports, Carragher stated his belief that Henry and FSG’s position as owners of the club is now untenable, with the former Reds defender claiming he could no longer see a future for them at Anfield.

And, after Anfield Watch relayed Carragher’s comments on Twitter, fans of Liverpool flocked to have their say on the matter, with many using the 43-year-old’s remarks as a springboard to launch their own attack on the club’s American owners.

So, what exactly did these Liverpool fans have to say in reaction to Jamie Carragher’s comments?

MCFC fans react to Ferguson news

Numerous Manchester City fans have been reacting to the bizarre news that Sir Alex Ferguson visited the Lowry Hotel, where Paris Saint-Germain are staying, ahead of the Champions League semi-final on Tuesday.

The Citizens face the Ligue 1 champions at the Etihad Stadium tonight as they aim to reach the final of Europe’s premier club competition. They won the first leg at the Parc des Princes last week 2-1, so a solid performance this time around should be enough to see them through.

Ferguson is a Manchester United legend, having won numerous trophies at Old Trafford during a 26-and-a-halfyear spell at the club. It may seem to some that he doesn’t want to see City succeed though, as he just so happened to visit the same hotel at which PSG are staying hours before kick-off.

The news was shared on Twitter by the Manchester Evening News’ official Twitter account, and it attracted plenty of interest from City supporters. These fans took to social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts on the matter.

LFC: Fans react to Wijnaldum’s comments

Fans of Liverpool have been reacting to a post on Twitter, in which the Reds central-midfielder, Georginio Wijnaldum, reflected on the club’s recent Champions League elimination.

Following a 3-1 defeat in the first leg of the tie, Liverpool faced an uphill battle in the return fixture at Anfield on Tuesday evening, and, despite creating a number of chances against Zinedine Zidane’s side on the night, were ultimately knocked out of the competition following a 0-0 draw.

In reaction to their elimination, Wijnaldum then took to Twitter, stating that it was “frustrating” to see Liverpool’s Champions League campaign come to an end in the manner it did, before going on to claim that he and his team “gave it all” against Madrid, but they just had “no luck to finish it”.

However, Liverpool fans then flocked to have their say on the matter, with many appearing furious at Wijnaldum’s efforts in the fixture, while some went as far to claim they feel it is now time for the midfielder to leave the club.

So, what exactly did these Liverpool fans have to say in reaction to Georginio Wijnaldum’s comments?

“Get out of my club.”

@bigbossJ380

“If you gave it all, you’d have scored the chance you skyed. Let’s be honest, giving it all is winning the competition, something you’ve not done at all this season. You down tools cause you’re leaving, you’re no better than Torres, Owen, Bale etc.”

O time se sacrifica bastante. Sem isso, as coisas não acontecem. Eles entenderam bem essa ideia. O sacrifício não pode ser só no dia do jogo, o jogo se ganha durante a semana – completou Jair Ventura, que venceu três das cinco partidas que comandou.

Lawrenson tips Wolves to topple Aston Villa

Wolves are set to take on Aston Villa on Saturday evening in what is a crunch clash for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

Lawrenson reacts

The Black Country club are currently 12th in the Premier League table with just two wins from their last five outings and will look to react after their 4-1 defeat to Manchester City last time out.

Villa are three places above them in the standings but have two games in hand – as well as three more wins to their name this season.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Lawrenson believes that their performance at the Etihad will galvanise them into gaining three points against their Midland rivals.

He said: “Nuno Espirito Santo’s side were well beaten in the end by Manchester City in midweek but they were still hard to break down. They didn’t get much of a chance to attack against City but, apart from that game, they have had a bit more bite recently too.”

Lawrenson went on to predict that Wolves would beat Dean Smith’s side 1-0 in a closely-fought contest.

Transfer Tavern Verdict

Wolves definitely illustrated glimpses of promises last time out as they went toe-to-toe with the league leaders, which shows why the scoreline was harsh on the visitors.

They can temporarily move into the top 10 with a win as they will have played more than the teams around them, and there is no reason why they can’t do just that.

In other news, Tim Spiers speaks out on future of “outstanding” Wolves gem.

Tottenham attempted Malcom signing

Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, via Sport Witness, intermediary and football agent Josep Maria Minguella Jr has dropped a transfer admission surrounding Brazilian forward Malcom and his move from Bordeaux to Barcelona in 2018 – with the intermediary revealing a €62 million (£53.7 million) offer from Tottenham at the time.

Minguella Jr, in an interview with the Spanish outlet, was asked about his role in the Malcom transfer to Barcelona – coming after Cadena SER (via Sport Witness) claimed that he received €10 million (£8.6m) commission for facilitating the move.

Tottenham transfer admission emerges

Rubbishing this report, Minguella Jr states his ‘real commission’ was ‘just over one million euro’  – going on to drop a revelation involving Tottenham.

He says that Spurs lodged an offer for Malcom worth £53.7m before he completed a move to Barcelona in 2018.

“Barça hired me to make possible an operation that initially cost about €62m, which was the offer that Bordeaux had from Tottenham, and we managed to get him to stop going to Roma, get off the plane and change course to Barcelona,” Minguella Jr said.

“The operation was closed for €41m plus the 8 of intermediation that could make this operation possible.”

Transfer Tavern take

An interesting claim, it lifts the lid on Levy’s attempted coup for ex-Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino during a time when there were few transfer dealings in north London.

Indeed, Tottenham did not make a single signing, free or otherwise, in the summer of 2018 – but Minguella Jr’s admission has shed light on an attempt at the very least.

Wolves: Romain Saiss was poor on Saturday

If anything summed up Wolves’ season, it would be the last couple of weeks.

Throughout February, the Old Gold were brilliant as they bounced back from some relegation talk to go through the month unbeaten.

Nuno Santo has been nominated for the Manager of the Month award while Ruben Neves is in the conversation to be crowned Player of the Month.

However, the cracks are starting to appear in Wolves’ armoury again. They are now winless in three successive outings with their performance against Aston Villa on Saturday providing very few positives.

Nuno’s men drew 0-0 as they lacked ruthlessness in front of goal. It has been the same story in their last two matches, drawing 1-1 with Newcastle and being battered 4-1 by Manchester City.

It has been a poor week for the Midlands outfit and nothing typifies that more than their ability or lack of it rather, to find the net.

Willian Jose is still yet to score in a Wolves shirt while Adama Traore’s goal drought goes on. It would seem that they’re beginning to rely on their defenders to score the goals.

Conor Coady netted in midweek, while he and Romain Saiss had their best chances against Villa on Saturday.

Pedro Neto whipped in a mean ball from the right during the second half which found its way to Coady at the back stick. He hit the post and then with the goal at his mercy, Saiss somehow missed an open goal from a matter of yards.

Tim Spiers claimed the effort “defied the laws of physics” and it’s hard to argue with that point. The Moroccan just needed to tap the ball home but instead skied it miles over the bar. It was a moment that ultimately cost Wolves the game and left every Old Gold player in the camera shot with their head in their hands.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-news-on-wolves-from-molineux” title=” Check out the latest news on Wolves from Molineux!”]

It was a bewildering miss, one that might just go down as the worst of the Premier League season. Though, it was an incident that just about summed up a woeful night for Saiss; a player who never got going at Villa Park.

The £22k-per-week defender has been inconsistent this term and his display on Saturday evening proved that very point. Nuno likes his defenders to be able to play out from the back but he failed in that department, achieving a pass success rate of just 70%.

That tally happened to be the worst of any Wolves outfield player. It was also a number that was 12% worse than his seasonal average of 82% this term.

The Express & Star were rather damning in their assessment of the defender at full-time, saying; “Headed the ball with authority, however, his passing was inconsistent throughout. But it’s the miss of the season that will cause the Moroccan international some sleepless nights.”

Saiss was kept busy by the likes of Trezeguet and Ollie Watkins but he often came out second best, winning just a solitary tackle in the entire match. In addition, the centre-back surrendered possession on 15 occasions.

It was an uncharacteristically poor performance from Saiss, someone who should now be wary of his place in the team.

With Willy Boly back among the substitutes, Nuno must consider wielding the axe on his place in the starting XI and replacing him with a more reliable defender. Boly is certainly that.

AND in other news, Wolves gem who made just 23 passes let Nuno down a lot, Spiers said he “offered nowt”…

Leeds United: Club make concrete contact for Pulgar %%sep%% %%sitename%%

Premier League side Leeds United have reportedly made their move for Fiorentina midfielder Erick Pulgar.

Some days ago, Leeds were linked with a move for Fiorentina star Pulgar and it was stated that the Whites had made contact with La Viola over a move for the Chilean midfielder. Further updates have now emerged about Pulgar’s links with a potential move to Elland Road.

Leeds lead the way for Pulgar

Florence-based outlet La Nazione have reported (via Sport Witness) recently that the Whites have now made the most ‘concrete’ contact for the Chilean, who could now be closer to a possible La Viola exit. The fact that the midfielder hasn’t come off from the bench in the last two games is seen as a sign of the fact that he could be leaving soon.

It also stated that La Viola could be willing to listen to offers for the former Bologna man in an attempt to make sure that they get some funds through his sale to make some new signings this month.

Pulgar had arrived at Fiorentina from Bologna in the summer of 2019 for a fee of £9million. For La Viola, the midfielder has played 53 games in all competitions and has scored seven goals, while picking up eight assists.

Last season, Pulgar had come up with 56 shot-creation actions from dead ball situations in Serie A. He also came up with the highest number of goal creation actions from dead ball scenarios in the previous campaign – he is a set-piece specialist, currently valued at £11.25m by Transfermarkt.

Pulgar could be a good signing for Leeds

Apart from the fact that Pulgar is a fantastic set-piece taker, the Chilean is also a versatile midfielder who can play in defensive midfield and in central midfield. In that sense, he would add depth to the Leeds side.

As things stand, Marcelo Bielsa’s men have just a single out-and-out senior-team option for the defensive midfield. They also have only two out-and-out options for the central midfield, considering that Adam Forshaw is injured (as per Transfermarkt).

So Pulgar would improve chance creation from set-pieces and would add depth to midfield. Because of that, he would a very good signing for the Whites.

In other news, a Champions League winner has been tipped to move to Leeds – read more about it here.
