Group AChris Whelan took 4 for 27 as Worcestershire breezed past Hampshire by 108 runs at New Road. Worcestershire’s 246 for 8 was a fragmented innings made up of three knocks of 31, by Moeen Ali, Gareth Batty and, at No.9, Ian Fisher. Yet in reply, Hampshire suffered an early collapse, sinking to 57 for 5. When Chris Benham was seventh-man out for 42, Whelan mopped up the tail as Worcestershire romped home with more than 11 overs to spare.Heavy Dublin rain prevented any play between Ireland and Leicestershire, the match abandoned without a ball bowled.Group BScotland made it five losses out of five with another comprehensive defeat, this time by Middlesex whose captain, Shaun Udal, turned in a fine allround performance in Edinburgh. Phillip Hughes, for once, failed to make a sizeable contribution in making just 11, and when Dawid Malan departed for just 7, Middlesex were beginning to wobble on 128 for 3. However, Eoin Morgan’s sublime one-day form continued unabated with another half-century and he was well supported by Udal who smacked a career-best 79, from just 46 balls, with five fours and a six. Chasing 281, Scotland lost their captain, Gavin Hamilton, for a sixth-ball duck and despite Ryan Watson’s 47, there was little else to worry Middlesex. Udal picked up 3 for 32 while Malan’s very part-time legspinners earned him 2 for 4 in a 138-run trouncing.Somerset reached 135 for 2 from 22 overs in their match against Warwickshire at Taunton, before rain ended any possibility of forcing a result. Marcus Trescothick continued his fine form with a 69-ball 84 while James Hildreth made 33.

Nash's freak injury overshadows Kent's win

A round-up of Sunday’s matches in the Twenty20 Cup

Cricinfo staff31-May-2009South Division

Kent’s third win of the campaign, by five wickets over Sussex at Canterbury with three overs to spare, was overshadowed by a freak injury to Sussex’s Chris Nash which left him with a suspected broken leg. The incident happened when Nash and Dwayne Smith collided when trying to catch a top edge from Geraint Jones. There was a 15-minute delay as paramedics treated Nash and he was taken to hospital by ambulance. Sussex’s total of 133 never looked enough, and Jones smacked a 39-ball 56 before edging to the keeper with the scores level.Mark Ramprakash’s 73 off 47 balls was not enough to prevent Surrey going down to an 18-run defeat by Hampshire at the Rose Bowl. Hampshire made 191 for 6 in glorious sunshine, with Michael Lumb and James Adams getting the innings off to a flier with an opening stand of 92 in nine overs. Ramprakash just about kept Surrey in with an outside chance, but when he fell with 41 needed from three overs, the game was up.North Division

Lancashire remained top of the division with their fourth straight win, easily beating Leicestershire by seven wickets at Grace Road with almost four overs in hand. James Allenby provided the backbone of the Leicestershire innings with 71, and briefly that appeared as if it might be enough as Lancashire slipped to 47 for 3. But Francois du Plessis hammered an unbeaten 78, including 13 fours and two sixes, in an unbeaten fourth-wicket stand of 104 with Ashwell Prince.A tight last over from seamer Mitch Claydon helped Durham to an eight-run win over Nottinghamshire in front of around 5000 spectators at Chester-le-Street. With ten needed and two wickets remaining, Claydon bowled Luke Fletcher with the second ball and Mark Ealham with the fourth – he finished with 5 for 26. Earlier in the week in the reverse fixture at Trent Bridge, Claydon hit the winning runs off the last ball.Nottinghamshire did well to take the game to the last over, as they were 132 for 7 chasing 178 with three overs remaining. Some destructive hitting from Andre Adams and Mark Ealham put them back in the game before Claydon’s late show. Durham’s innings was built on 55 from Michael Di Venuto and a whirlwind 48 not out from Dale Benkenstein, which included five sixes.A bumper crowd at Chesterfield had little to cheer as Yorkshire cruised to an eight-wicket victory over Derbyshire with 23 balls to spare. On a slow pitch, Derbyshire’s batsmen never looked at ease, and only a fourth-wicket stand of 56 in six overs between Wavell Hinds and Stuart Law helped them to 131 for 6. Andrew Gale had no such problem at the top of the Yorkshire order, smashing eight fours and three sixes in a 58-ball 79 not out.Overall, it was a day to cheer for both the ECB and country treasurers. Crowds at the five matches were all good, no doubt boosted by the glorious weather across the country.

Rodon drops four-word training message

Taking to Instagram, Tottenham Hotspur defender Joe Rodon has dropped a four-word message in a possible boost for Lilywhites boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

The Lowdown: Rodon yet to feature…

The Wales international impressed for Tottenham last season when given his sporadic chances under both former manager Jose Mourinho and interim coach Ryan Mason.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Over his 12 Premier League appearances, the starlet averaged a cool and composed 88.1% pass accuracy out from the back with only Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg racking up a higher success rate (WhoScored).

He also turned heads at international level, with Wales Online journalist Ian Mitchelmore branding him a ‘special player’ and ‘flawless’ after his performance against Belgium in March (Twitter).

The 23-year-old is still yet make his debut under Nuno due to a thigh injury picked up at the start of the season, but going by his Instagram post, the Portuguese could soon be able to call upon him.

The Latest: Rodon drops four-word message…

Taking to his social media, the centre-back has published a four-word message as he returns to the training pitches for Wales following successful rehabilitation.

After his most recent setback, Rodon simply stated ‘good to be back’ as he drops an Instagram update for both Spurs and Welsh supporters.

The official account for Wales’ national team also posted their own update on Twitter confirming his return from injury.

The Verdict: Boost for Nuno…

Amid the plethora of unwelcome international news regarding Tottenham players, this Rodon update arguably comes as a breath of fresh air.

As explained by Alasdair Gold, it’s hard to remember a worse international break than this one with Ryan Sessegnon, Son Heung-min and now Oliver Skipp all succumbing to injury issues.

Davinson Sanchez, Giovani Lo Celso and Cristian Romero are also stuck abroad and must complete a ten day training camp in Croatia before their expected return to London around September 16 (Dan Kilpatrick).

Indeed, it appears Nuno and Spurs are in need of a much welcomed positive update.

Newcastle journalist explains fan criticism of Steve Bruce

Newcastle United journalist Liam Kennedy insists that Steve Bruce has not been helped by the club’s takeover situation.

The Magpies continue to hope that the long-mooted takeover from the Saudi Arabia-backed Public Investment Fund will be given the green light amid court proceedings.

It remains to be seen if the club would be willing to keep Bruce as manager were the takeover to go ahead.

And Kennedy thinks that the club’s fans have been given a glimpse of what life could be like without Mike Ashley, which is somewhat feeding into the supporters’ distrust of the manager.

Indeed, Newcastle began their season with a disappointing 4-2 defeat to West Ham United at St James’ Park, despite twice taking the lead.

Kennedy said: “I think the takeover situation hasn’t helped him. I think that’s almost given people a glimpse of light, thinking there could be a better future ahead.

“And then the realisation maybe this summer is coming that people think maybe not now, maybe we’re stuck with Ashley, and with Ashley comes Bruce, and that level of manager. So in some ways, he’s probably suffering from the circumstances a little bit.”

Newcastle are next in action against Aston Villa before taking on Burnley in the EFL Cup; the club will be hoping to get their first three points on the board against Dean Smith’s men.

Jefferson, Arnaldo e…

Sri Lanka Cricket clarifies stand on ICL players

Marvan Atapattu will be only allowed to play in the Premier League Cricket Tournament this season © Cricinfo Ltd

Sri Lanka Cricket has revised its stance on ICL cricketers playing domestic cricket after a meeting with the sports minister Gamini Lokuge. The board clarified that the approval, given by the interim committee, to ICL players last week to play domestic matches was limited to the “upcoming Premier League Cricket Tournament 2008 only”.”All ICL contracted cricketers will not be permitted to represent teams at district, provincial and international level,” SLC said in a statement. On September 19, in an unexpected move, the SLC allowed five cricketers and an umpire, who had signed up for the unauthorised ICL in 2007, to take part in domestic cricket. Marvan Atapattu, the former Sri Lanka captain, Russel Arnold, Upul Chandana, Avishka Gunawardene, Saman Jayantha and umpire Ranmore Martinesz were the players who benefited from the decision. However, at the meeting, Lokuge stressed the importance of working together with the Indian board, which has had a close relationship with the SLC for a long time. The BCCI had expressed its disappointment at the news of lifitng of the ban on the ICL players.Lokuge also requested SLC’s interim committee to negotiate with the England board so that Sri Lanka’s IPL players can take part in the Twenty20 league next year. The tour, as of now, clashes with the IPL and Lokuge asked the committee to work out alternative dates and proceed with the tour. He is also yet to ratify Sri Lanka’s Twenty20 squad for the Canada Cup Four Nation 20/20 in Ontario from October 10 to 13.

Tottenham make bid to sign Dodo

According to journalist Ekrem Konur, Tottenham Hotspur, and by extension managing director Fabio Paratici, have lodged an offer to sign Shakhtar Donetsk defender Dodo – and they have already received a reply.

The Lowdown: Spurs in right-back market?

Amid the exit links surrounding Serge Aurier and even Matt Doherty, Tottenham have been touted to add a new right-back to Nuno Espirito Santo’s ranks before the transfer window closes on August 31.

The likes of Zeki Celik, Max Aarons and Tariq Lamptey have all been linked with Spurs this summer, while Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu can also operate in that position.

Konur has now brought news of a Paratici offer for yet another Spurs right-back target.

The Latest: Spurs submit Dodo offer…

As per the Turkish reporter on social media, Spurs have now made a €20m (£17m) offer to Shakhtar for their defensive ace, with the Ukrainian club swiftly replying.

It is explained by the journalist that Tottenham’s bid has been rejected as Shakhtar rate him at around €40m (£34m).

Along with Spurs, Bayern Munich lodged a bid of their own amounting to roughly €25m (£21.2m), with that offer also being rejected outright.

The Verdict: Move on…

Given that Spurs are also eyeing moves for Pau Torres and Lautaro Martinez (The Times), we advise Paratici to move on from this chase if £34m is indeed the price for Dodo.

Stepping up talks for Tomiyasu to play as a right-back is arguably far more fruitful, considering that he would cost around half of that amount, according to Sky Sports.

Tottenham certainly cannot afford to splash such a huge amount on that position if they wish to add a potent attacker like Martinez or Dusan Vlahovic.
