Neil Jones makes key Sadio Mane claim

Liverpool have not even started negotiations with Sadio Mane over a new deal at the club, according to reliable journalist Neil Jones.

The Lowdown: Mane into final 18 months

The 29-year-old has been an incredible player for the Reds, scoring 107 goals and registering 44 assists in 244 appearances overall.

Mane’s current deal expires in the summer of 2023, however, and with his 30th birthday approaching, there are slight question marks surrounding his future.

The arrival of Luis Diaz also potentially clouds the situation, with the Porto man possibly seen as a long-term replacement for Liverpool’s No.10.

[freshpress-quiz id=“375258″]

The Latest: Jones makes important claim

Writing for Goal on Sunday, Jones claimed that ‘there have been no formal negotiations’ between the Reds and Mane’s representatives regarding a new contract.

He also states that the signing of Diaz ‘adds an extra layer of intrigue’, perhaps hinting that the Senegal superstar sees the signing as a threat to his future at Anfield.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-19/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Potential exit on the cards?

There is an argument to say that Mane isn’t quite the world-class player he once was, even though he has still scored ten goals this season.

His blistering burst of pace has dropped off slightly and his all-round involvement in games isn’t as great as in the title-winning season, with only one league assist to his name in 2021/22.

That being said, he remains a player who would walk into most teams – Jurgen Klopp has hailed him as ‘unbelievable’ – and if he agrees to sign a deal that isn’t necessarily long-term it would make perfect sense.

He may gradually become more of a squad player if Diaz excels, as well as the increasingly influential Diogo Jota, but at 29, there are still years left in him at the top.

In other news, some Liverpool fans love an update regarding one Reds player. Find out who it is here.

Rahul Dewan aspires to be an allrounder

Rahul Dewan, the Haryana batsman, who contributed significantly as a part-time offspinner to give North Zone victory in the Deodhar Trophy final against West Zone in Vadodara, is keen on developing his bowling to become a full-fledged allrounder.”After this performance [in the final], I’ll probably have to take my bowling a lot more seriously,” Dewan told . “You never know, maybe I could model myself into a decent allrounder.”Opening the innings, Dewan contributed only 15 runs, but snared 4 for 18 in four overs in the face of a fierce onslaught from Yusuf Pathan, to win the game for his side along with Mukesh Sharma who picked up a five-for. Dewan, though, played down his spell and credited the spinner-friendly pitch for his success.”It was a spinner’s track and the ball was turning square, all I had to do was to control the wrist and not get carried away,” Dewan said. “To the left-handers I bowled stump-to-stump so that the ball moves away from them, and that’s how I got Ravindra Jadeja, Parthiv Patel and Iqbal Abdulla.”Despite his success in domestic tournaments, Dewan is dejected by the fact that an IPL contract has eluded him since the first season, when he was with the Delhi Daredevils. “Maybe the franchises think I am too technical but that is only because I put a price on my wicket,” Dewan said. “I had a really good season but none of the teams got in touch with me. It is disappointing to not have a contract.”I got a one-year contract for the first season with Daredevils. Once the tournament came to an end they told me that they would follow my performances and get back to me. I had a good season back then also but there was no follow-up from them.”Dewan had a fruitful domestic season for Haryana, and was the fourth highest run-scorer in the Ranji Plate League, with 418 runs. His team did well to qualify for the Ranji semi-finals as well as the 2011 Super League, an achievement that pleased Dewan.”It is incredible that Haryana made it into the Super Elite group from the Plate division. Earlier, the differential treatment was evident, as even great performances from our team used to be sidelined because we were in the lower division.”Last season, our target was to make it into the big stage but we were unable to make it. This season, we came in with a single-minded focus and we are all really happy that we managed to reach our goal.”With the domestic season winding to a close, Dewan looks forward to a short break before returning to action. “I am going to take a few days off and rest my sore body, but after that it’s back to concentrating on my game,” Dewan said. “But this time it will be a little different. Apart from my batting, I will also give my off spin a lot of attention and of course, root for my favourite IPL team – the Delhi Daredevils.”

Spurs "likely" to seal Adama Traore move

Tottenham Hotspur should seal the signature of Adama Traore before this month’s transfer deadline…

What’s the word?

That’s according to the reliable Jack Pitt-Brooke of The Athletic after he delivered a fresh and exciting claim on this week’s episode of the ‘View from the Lane’ podcast.

“I think it’s more likely than not that they will end up signing Adama Traore,” he said.

“Traore I gather is still the likeliest target to come in. Tottenham are working on trying to get a deal done. Wolves do want to sell him. Tottenham are trying to find a way to do it.

“Some people talk about the possibility of a loan with an obligation, and I do think that if Matt Doherty were to go back to Wolves that would be slightly easier as that would be part of the deal but so far, I haven’t got any indication that is actually going to happen, even if Tottenham would like that to happen.

“I do think they will get it over the line.”

Just get it done

It’s thought that the Wolves star is available for just £20m this month but it seems as if the Lilywhites are dithering over a loan with an obligation to buy in the summer – really they ought to just stump up the cash now as manager Antonio Conte is in desperate need of additions.

As per the Telegraph, the tricky Spain international has been identified as a priority for the Italian, who sees him as a perfect fit for the right wing-back role over summer signing Emerson Royal.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-transfer-gossip-rumours-conte-paratici-levy-premier-league” title=”Read the latest Spurs news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

You’d imagine that Traore, who doesn’t have the best end product, would thrive in such a role and under a head coach like Conte.

Indeed, the 25-year-old powerhouse scored his first goal of the season at the weekend in the Old Gold’s win over Southampton, where he came off the bench in a 12-minute cameo – a sign he’s set to leave, perhaps?

But the 5 foot 10 dynamo, who has played for Aston Villa and Middlesbrough, has a nice mix of dribbling ability and brute physicality that would not only make him a lethal threat down the right flank but one that would have Spurs fans on the edge of their seats.

He’s built like a brick wall, as once alluded to by BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand, who dubbed him “a machine” who could be “a powerlifter or a cruiser-weight boxer” and Southampton forward Che Adams, who described him as a “monster” to the Premier League’s YouTube channel back in May.

Traore currently leads the top-flight for dribbles per game (4.3), which is more than the likes of Mo Salah (1.9), Wilfried Zaha (1.9) and Tottenham’s very own Lucas Moura (2.5), via WhoScored.

That combined with his average of 1.5 key passes per game last season suggests he’s a nuisance in the final third. He has previously played the wing-back role under Nuno Santo at Molineux, so he wouldn’t need much time in adapting and there’s no one better to learn from than Conte. Just look at Victor Moses’ time under him at Chelsea.

If Pitt-Brooke, who is one of the most reliable when it comes to Spurs news, believes the deal is likely to happen despite the situation dragging on and on, then many around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium must be absolutely buzzing.

It’s surely a matter of time before a deal is struck, especially as the Spaniard is entering the final 18 months of his current contract.

Ireland's women to meet England and New Zealand

Ireland’s women will face double world-champions England as well as New Zealand in a quadrangular tournament to be held in England in July

Cricinfo staff22-Jan-2010Ireland’s women will face double world-champions England as well as New Zealand in a quadrangular tournament to be held in England in July. An MCC XI will be the fourth team.”These type of games are just what is required, and with the quality in the squad, the playing programme is warranted,” said Ireland Cricket operations director Mark Garaway. “We can only improve by playing top level opposition, and it will give the squad a terrific lift.””I’m absolutely delighted that Ireland has been given the chance to play two of the best sides in the world this summer,” said Irish captain Heather Whelan. “Playing England and New Zealand outside of a World Cup is a fantastic opportunity for us. It’s especially exciting for the new players on the squad who would never have played against opposition of this calibre before.””It’s a great way to start off our international season before heading to Scotland for the European Championships in August and then Dubai for the ranking tournament in October.”

Ndombele in line for Spurs recall v Leeds

Antonio Conte will be looking for his opening Premier League victory in charge of Spurs when he takes the dugout for the very first time at home this afternoon.

Spurs welcome Leeds United to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for Sunday’s late kick-off for their return to action following the international break.

The Italian narrowly defeated Vitesse in the Europa Conference League but could only seal a point against Everton at Goodison Park before several members of his first-team squad departed for national team duty.

He now faces an out-of-sorts Yorkshire outfit but there will be a number of dilemmas ringing around his head heading into the encounter.

The Lilywhites’ creative problems are no secret – despite sitting in tenth place before the game, they are amongst the very worst in the division in the final third.

Only Norwich City (10) have averaged fewer shots per game than Spurs (10.1) and similarly, the Canaries (9.32) are the one team to have managed a lower expected goals ratio than the north Londoners (11.43).

Furthermore, under Conte, Spurs’ worrying run without a goal or shot on target continued. It’s now five hours since they last found the net – when Heung-min Son bagged the third at Newcastle United – and it’s nearly four hours since Harry Kane’s header was on target against West Ham.

On that evidence, something has got to change.

It has been quietly mooted that the 52-year-old could alter his system at the club, going from a 3-4-3 of sorts, which utilises Son and Lucas Moura as inside-forwards behind Kane, to a 3-4-1-2, which would deploy a no.10 in the hole.

If this turns out to be the case, then it’s time for Conte to turn to Tanguy Ndombele as the Frenchman is arguably the club’s most technically gifted talent, on his day.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news-updates-transfers-antonio-conte-thfc” title=”Read the latest Spurs news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

Indeed, ex-goalkeeper Joe Hart once waxed lyrical about his ability to BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand.

“This kid is a world-beater, he can do anything.’ He just turned around during the game and said ‘this kid is unplayable’,” claimed the former shot-stopper during Spurs’ FA Cup clash with Wycombe Wanderers (via football.london).

The 24-year-old dynamo, who is valued at £34m by CIES Football Observatory, was always meant to be the creative heartbeat of Spurs’ midfield following the departure of Christian Eriksen but he has not quite lived up to expectations.

Perhaps it will be Conte who gets the best out of him but he’ll have to start him for the very first time against Leeds to find out.

Back in 2018, French football journalist Julien Laurens lauded Ndombele for his attributes in the final third, telling the BBC:

“Everything he does is forward – there aren’t many sideways passes. The first thing on his mind is going forward, with a pass that can break a line or beat two or three players with a dribble because he’s so good carrying the ball.”

At Lyon, the 5 foot 11 midfielder averaged at least 1.5 key passes per 90 minutes in every top-flight campaign prior to his move to Spurs. That would see him rank third in the current squad and season.

With Oliver Skipp also out through suspension, it would be wise for Conte to unleash Ndombele against Leeds this afternoon. It could be a game-changing decision come full-time.

Faltou companhia a Lucas Lima.

Tottenham sack Nuno Espirito Santo

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Nuno Espirito Santo has been sacked as the club’s manager.

The Lowdown: Spurs struggling

Despite winning their first three Premier League games (Sky Sports), Spurs have had an overall miserable campaign to date.

As it stands, they are eighth in the top-flight table and have won just two of their last seven league matches. Calls have been made for the manager to be relieved of his duties, and Daniel Levy has now made a decision.

The Latest: Nuno gets Spurs sack

As such, Nuno has this morning been sacked as Tottenham manager, with the Daily Mail’s Sami Mokbel breaking the news shortly before it was confirmed by the club.

His job was not deemed to be under threat before Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Manchester United, but the nature of that performance appears to have left Levy and Fabio Paratici with no choice but to part ways with the 47-year-old.

The Verdict: Next decision must be right

Nuno was far from Spurs’ first choice to become the club’s new manager in the summer. The likes of Antonio Conte, Paulo Fonseca and Gennaro Gattuso were all higher up the list but, for one reason or another, none of them made the move to north London.

After four months in charge, the Portuguese has been let go, leaving Tottenham in a poor position in the table. It is vital that Levy and co get the right man through the door to replace him after jettisoning a second manager in less than seven months, otherwise this could be an unstable season of struggle for Spurs, who already face an uphill battle to return to the Champions League.

Newcastle eyeing Real Madrid’s Casemiro

An update has emerged regarding Newcastle’s interest in Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro.

What’s the talk?

According to Spanish outlet El Nacional, the Magpies are eyeing up a potential swoop for the Brazil international in either January or next summer.

The report claims that a move could happen as the 29-year-old is currently uncomfortable with Carlo Ancelotti being the manager at the Bernabeu.

Lerma 2.0

Eddie Howe is reportedly on the verge of becoming the new manager of Newcastle and a move for Casemiro could be an excellent first foray into the market. The £63m-rated beast could be the 43-year-old’s next Jefferson Lerma, who excelled in the top flight as a midfield enforcer for Bournemouth.

The 27-year-old played 65 games under Howe before the coach’s exit from the Vitality Stadium in 2020, having signed for £25.2m from Levante in 2018. The Colombia international enjoyed an impressive debut campaign in English football with the Cherries as he averaged a WhoScored rating of 6.97 across 30 Premier League appearances, with 3.3 tackles and interceptions per game.

Casemiro is a similar type of player in style. The Brazilian is a strong defensive-minded midfielder who breaks up the play. He has averaged five tackles and interceptions per game over the course of his career, playing the best part of 300 matches for Real Madrid, Porto and Brazil.

This season, he has made 3.8 tackles and interceptions per game whilst averaging an excellent WhoScored rating of 7.01 in La Liga. These statistics are similar to the numbers Lerma was posting in his first season under Howe, which suggests that Casemiro could thrive under the former Bournemouth boss’ management, as he has shown that he can help a player of such style to thrive.

Former Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui once hailed him as a “joy to coach” and the enforcer’s comments on his work behind the scenes show why.

Casemiro once explained: “I love to learn. I watch back, see the errors, evaluate. I love that. People say I think like a coach. I always try to read the game, the other team’s mind, their coach, what they’re trying to do. Often the smallest details – a metre either way – change everything. I have [football analytics platform] Wyscout and watch everything, from China or anywhere.”

This suggests that Howe could love to work with Casemiro and help him improve. At the age of 29, he still has plenty of time ahead of him in the holding midfield role. Fernandinho, for instance, is still playing for Manchester City at 36, and the Real Madrid man could hopefully be Newcastle’s midfield anchor for years to come.
