Mike Ashley could put Newcastle in jeopardy with next transfer target

As of yet, Mike Ashley’s wallet is yet to make an appearance this summer.

The Newcastle owner has refused to release much money to Rafa Benitez this year and so far has only brought in Keney on loan, Ki Sung-yeung on a free transfer and Martin Dubravka on a £3.6 million permanent transfer following his loan spell last year.

Furthermore, the Newcastle boss has been told that the club will need to sell before they can buy. With that in mind, the Daily Mail is reporting that Newcastle are targeting Everton flop, Nikola Vlasic.

The deal will not be permanent however as the club is only looking at a loan deal.

The Breakdown

The Everton winger fell out of favour with Sam Allardyce last season and could well be available on a temporary deal much to the delight of Mike Ashley.

The forward joined Everton last season in a deal worth around £10 million but despite showing some flashes of potential, Vlasic has been pretty poor so far. Moreover, with Ademola Lookman back from his loan spell and Yannick Bolasie returning from injury, it seems Vlasic’s chances of playing are unlikely.

In Newcastle’s case, the club is obviously going down the route of spending very little. The forward only managed two goals in 19 games for Everton last year and would seem a pretty underwhelming signing for the Toon.

A loan for Vlasic isn’t going to wow the fans or indeed impress Benitez. He may be cheap but Newcastle should be looking elsewhere to add to their forward line.

Tottenham close to signing Argentinian teenage defender Juan Foyth

According to ESPN, Tottenham are closing in on Argentine defender Juan Foyth, who will likely be their first signing of the summer.

What’s the Story?

Estudiantes President and former Chelsea and Manchester United star Juan Sebastian Veron has flown into London for discussions with former teammate Mauricio Pochettino over a move for 19-year-old Juan Foyth.

The young defender is set to become Spurs’ first signing of the summer, with the club set to pay the £15million fee demanded by Estudiantes.

How good was Foyth last season?

Despite playing just 7 games last season, Juan Foyth made a significant impact and helped Estudiantes to a third place finish in the Argentinian Primera Division.

The young star is a tall, athletic player with ability at his feet as well as with his head. He is a ready made top flight product but will need a number of years honing his skills before he is to become a regular at Tottenham.

Would Foyth be a good signing for Spurs?

Claiming a future star for a relatively reasonable price in today’s market is a hard thing to achieve. However, Spurs may have just done that in the impending signing of Foyth.

While he is far from the finished product, the 19-year-old has bags of potential and could be a mainstay in North London for a number of years to come. And who better to coax his talents out of him than Alderweireld, Vertonghen and most importantly Mauricio Pochettino, a man who knows what its like to be a promising Argentinian defender himself.

Rojo gives Manchester United fitness boost ahead of Hull City clash

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho could have Marcos Rojo available for Thursday’s EFL Cup semi-final second leg against Hull City after the Argentine returned to training.

The 26-year-old missed Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Stoke City due to illness, but may resume his partnership with Phil Jones for this week’s trip to the KCOM Stadium.

Rojo and Jones have played together in every United game bar two since the beginning of November.

[ad_pod id=’now-tv’ align=’centre’]

Chris Smalling earned his first start since October in last weekend’s draw, but it is good news for Mourinho that Rojo appears to be fit for the upcoming matches.

As well as Rojo, left-back Luke Shaw took part in training this week following a difficult spell out of the team.

United have a tough schedule ahead as they face Hull on Thursday with a 2-0 advantage from the first leg, and then take on Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup over the weekend.

Mourinho’s side will face Hull for a second time in seven days when they welcome Marco Silva’s side to Old Trafford for a Premier League meeting on February 1.

Man United star backs title challenge despite goalscoring drought

Manchester United star Morgan Schneiderlin is adamant that the club can still win the Premier League title despite their recent struggles in front of goal, according to reports from the London Evening Standard.

The Red Devils have now drawn three games 0-0 in succession following their stalemate with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday, a result which dropped them from third to fourth on the Premier League table.

And United’s lack of goals have been criticized by fans, pundits, and even their opponents, with Louis van Gaal’s men scoring just 15 goals in the English top flight so far this season.

However, Schneiderlin, who was signed from Southampton during the summer, believes that their goal drought will end sooner rather than later and that they can recover to continue challenging for the title.

“Of course we are [in the title race]. It’s still early as we head into November so there are a lot of games to be played but we are there,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter if you are second, third, fourth or fifth in November. What matters is to be first at the end of May and win the games.

“Every team is going to go through a period where they don’t score goals and are going to be unlucky. It will happen to the teams in front of us for sure. It’s up to us to win games and overtake those teams.

“We have the players to score goals and we will score goals. It’s not a worry for me.

“We’ve had the chances and sometimes it’s just a matter of taking the time to make a good choice. It will come if we keep believing.”

United will host CSKA Moscow in a Champions League clash on Tuesday before facing a defensive West Bromwich Albion side at Old Trafford this weekend.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Late in the second half, Diaz scored twice in four minutes to help his country win 2-1 against Brazil in a World Cup qualifying match. Given the circumstances surrounding his father's abduction, Diaz's moving performance had even more emotional resonance. It was only during the international break that Luis Manuel Diaz and his son were reunited following his 12-day detention by the rebel organisation ELN in Colombia last week. Following the final whistle, Diaz was spotted embracing Alisson, his teammate at Liverpool and the Brazil goalie for the evening.

  • WHAT DIAZ SAID

Diaz singled out Alisson's support towards him during the ordeal: "He’s a great human being. I really respect him. He was very happy for me because he knew what we all went through. He gave me all the support I could’ve asked for."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Colombia won their first match against Brazil in eight years thanks to two goals from Diaz, which also moved them up to third in the South American qualification standings. Brazil is now in fifth place in the competition after losing twice in a row.

How Liverpool should line up for the 2023-24 season: Darwin Nunez on the bench and Curtis Jones at No.6

The Uruguayan has been in good form in pre-season but is arguably fifth in the forward pecking order at Anfield

Decisions, decisions, Jurgen Klopp has plenty of important ones to make as Liverpool kick-off their Premier League campaign with an intriguing clash with big-spending Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

The Reds were severely punished for failing to strengthen their midfield last summer, with the likes of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson suffering perhaps inevitable dips in form after a 64-game quadruple bid in 2021-22 ended in agony, as Jurgen Klopp's team were pipped to the English title by a point before losing to a Real Madrid side they had outplayed in the Champions League final.

The net result was the backline being brutally exposed as Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League, despite a late surge that saw them collect 25 of a possible 33 points – only champions Manchester City managed more over the closing 11 rounds (28).

So, can Liverpool re-establish themselves as a top-four team? Summer signings Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai should certainly help but, as it stands, Klopp has no specialist No.6, with both Fabinho and Henderson having been sold to Saudi Arabian sides, and the farcical pursuits of Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo set to end in disappointment, and embarrassment.

As a result, the manager still has a significant problem to solve in midfield, but at least his selection dilemma in attack is of the positive variety, given the depth of Liverpool's offensive options.

So, unless Lavia or Caicedo is signed, who should be in Klopp's first-choice starting line-up this season? GOAL breaks it all down below…

Getty ImagesGK: Alisson Becker

Alisson is Liverpool's undisputed No.1 and arguably the best goalkeeper in the world, which is precisely why Caoimhin Kelleher is looking for a move away from Anfield. The Brazilian was also one of the few Reds to perform anything close to their best last season.

Indeed, even though Alisson was repeatedly let down by his defence, only David de Gea managed to keep more clean sheets than the 30-year-old (14).

AdvertisementGetty ImagesRB: Trent Alexander-Arnold

Trent Alexander-Arnold is Liverpool's only real option at right-back despite question marks over his defensive qualities – and an ongoing debate over whether he would be better deployed in midfield.

It's hard not to feel a little bit sorry for Alexander-Arnoldat times. He's often caught out of position, but often because he's asked to perform this hybrid role where he serves as an auxiliary midfielder. It's a problem that still hasn't been adequately addressed by Klopp, who has reaffirmed his faith in the local hero by making him vice-captain for the coming campaign.

So, Alexander-Arnold is a certain starter in defence, for now at least.

(C)Getty ImagesCB: Ibrahima Konate

Because of his strength and, more importantly, his pace, Ibrahima Konate is definitely still the best option to start alongside Virgil van Dijk, although that's maybe not saying a lot given the alternatives are the pace-less Joel Matip and the injury-prone Joe Gomez.

The Frenchman remains worryingly error-prone, and serving as Liverpool's right-sided centre-back is not easy given Alexander-Arnold has the freedom to get forward. But Konate's potential is obvious and if he can hone his powers of concentration, he has everything in his locker to become a top-class centre-back.

Getty ImagesCB: Virgil van Dijk

Van Dijk may never again be the player he was before being broken up by Jordan Pickford at Goodison Park three years ago, but there were signs last season that he was getting back to something approaching his peerless best.

Klopp certainly seems to think that the Netherlands international will be a fixture in his defence for a few more years yet, having handed Van Dijk the captain's armband after Henderson's summer switch to Saudi Arabia.

Messi in, Ronaldo out – The 'Big Five' European leagues team of the season so far

Goal picks the top performers from across the Bundesliga, La Liga, Ligue 1, the Premier League and Serie A over the first half of the 2019-20 campaign

While we've only reached the halfway point of most European seasons, we've already seen a number of players well and truly stand out for their respective teams.

From Liverpool's versatile defenders to Bayern Munich's unstoppable striker, there are a few names that have starred more than others.

  • Getty Images

    GK: Keylor Navas (Paris Saint-Germain)

Keylor Navas has never hidden his disappointment at how he was offloaded by Real Madrid after helping the Blancos win three consecutive Champions League titles and the Costa Rican is now showing at Paris Saint-Germain just why he felt so hard done by.

No goalkeeper across Europe's 'Big Five' leagues has kept more clean sheets in all competitions than the 33-year-old (12), while of the shot-stoppers to have played at least 10 games this term, Navas has the best save percentage (83.02).

    RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)

Despite stiff competition from Bayern Munich's Joshua Kimmich, Trent Alexander-Arnold gets the nod at right-back for the remarkably influential role he's played in Liverpool establishing themselves as the best team in the world.

The England international's cross-field passes, deadly crosses and pin-point set-piece deliveries have made him one of the Premier League leaders' most potent attacking weapons, as illustrated by the fact that he has already racked up 10 assists in all competitions this season.

  • Getty Images

    CB: Chris Smalling (Roma)

A strong contender for the signing of the season so far, Chris Smalling has settled seamlessly into the Roma backline since joining from Manchester United during the summer for a loan fee of just €3 million (£2.7m).

The English centre-half has formed a formidable partnership with Gianluca Mancini at the heart of the Giallorossi defence, even popping up at the other end of the field with a couple of goals.

Roma's only issue now is trying to seal a permanent transfer for a player who has completely rebuilt his reputation and is likely to attract interest from several other clubs at the end of the season.

    CB: Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool)

Virgil van Dijk may have narrowly missed out on becoming the first defender to win the Ballon d'Or since 2006 but the classy Dutchman won't mind too much, given Liverpool are on course to end their Premier League drought, having already been crowned Club World Cup champions.

The centre-half has been well supported this season by Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren but Van Dijk is the man who binds the whole Reds defence together, the calm colossus who has won more aerial challenges (126) than any other defender in Europe's 'Big Five' leagues this season.

Me arrependo profundamente disso”, justificou o defensor.

Rogers and Smith lead Australia plunder

Chris Rogers and Steven Smith placed Australia in a dominant position on the first day at Lord’s, where they reached 337 for 1 at stumps

The Report by Brydon Coverdale16-Jul-2015
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsOn the first day in Cardiff, Joe Root had a life on zero and went on to score a century. On the first day at Lord’s, Chris Rogers had a life on zero and went on to score a century. In Cardiff it was Brad Haddin who dropped Root; at Lord’s it was Root himself who missed Rogers’ edge at third slip. Root’s hundred set up an England victory; Rogers’ ton might yet do the same for Australia.Of course, it is not as simple as to say that had Root got his hands above his head to snare Rogers the day would have belonged to England. But a wicket in the first over would have been the perfect start. Instead they had to settle for one breakthrough for the entire day, a David Warner brain-freeze that brought Rogers and Steven Smith together to begin a 259-run partnership.By stumps, Australia were in a dominant position at 337 for 1. Rogers was on 158 and had earned a place on the Lord’s honours board, a fitting achievement given the service he has provided to Middlesex over the past four years. Smith was on 129 and got his name on the board too, five years after he made his Test debut at Lord’s as a No. 8.For Rogers, this day ended a frustrating run of half-centuries that failed to turn into hundreds, seven in consecutive innings until that streak ended with his 10 in the second innings in Cardiff. For Smith, it was simply a continuation of his remarkable first-innings form of the past eight months: it was the sixth time in the past eight Tests that he had scored a first-innings century. The Lord’s pitch offered little for Alastair Cook’s bowlers. The pace was slow and sideways movement infrequent. But if they were to give themselves the best shot at a 2-0 lead in this Investec Ashes series, they had to take their half-chances. And they didn’t. James Anderson drew the Rogers edge that flew at catchable height over Root’s head, but other chances were missed later in the day.On 50, Smith edged a good Ben Stokes delivery that moved away off the pitch and Ian Bell, at second slip, got his hands low to the ground but failed to cling on to a chance he should have taken. A tougher chance was missed when Rogers was 78, his attempted sweep off Moeen Ali brushing the glove on the way through and ricocheting off Jos Buttler’s gloves down the leg side.Chris Rogers scored an unbeaten 158 to put Australia in a dominant position•Associated PressIt was a frustrating day for England’s bowlers. The fast men struggled to have any real impact, though a couple of balls fizzed past edges. Moeen delivered enough scoring opportunities that the batsmen could wait him out. Except, that is, Warner, who on 38 had struck two boundaries already in Moeen’s first over when he intemperately tried to thump him over long-off for another and was caught. That left Australia at 78 for 1, but two-and-a-half wicketless sessions followed. Rogers had been the more positive of the opening partners and although he slowed done somewhat after Warner’s departure, the scoring rate never stagnated too much. He was especially strong when late-cutting the spinners and punching the fast bowlers through point, and he finished with 25 boundaries. He slowed as triple-figures approached but from his 209th delivery Rogers pushed a drive back past the bowler Anderson for four. Almost as soon as the ball left his bat Rogers let out a scream of excitement, knowing that it would reach the boundary and a Test hundred at Lord’s was his.By the end of the day he had passed his previous highest Test score of 119 and as the evening grew near he steered a boundary through third man to bring up his 150. Among Australians, only Don Bradman and Bill Brown have scored Test double-centuries at Lord’s, and Rogers will begin day two with a realistic chance of joining them.He had well and truly overtaken Smith, who beat Rogers to a century by two overs. The milestone came from his 161st delivery with a pull for four off Anderson, and it was one of 13 fours (plus a six) he struck over the course of the day. His runs came all around the wicket, a perfectly timed on-drive off Broad and a dancing cover-drive off Moeen among the highlights.Smith’s first fifty came from 111 balls and his second fifty from 50 balls, but his pace then dropped away again as he complemented Rogers’ lifting tempo. The two men worked together to ensure they reached stumps safely, though an edge from Rogers in the last over fell just short of Bell at slip. If everything went England’s way in Cardiff, at Lord’s it was quite the opposite.

'Lógica alvinegra': Corinthians empata sem gols com o Grêmio

MatériaMais Notícias

Deu a ‘lógica alvinegra’.

> Confira e simule a classificação do Campeonato Brasileiro
